Dance, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal rejects the practicality of expanding his walloping Fiction Corpus with even more fiction characters; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the feasibility of promulgating English as a global lingua franca. I do doubt the ritualistically sanctioned strategy by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Strengthening one's intimacy with a language isn't like creating a stronger wheelbarrow. A language is not just an instrument that you can learn to employ with greater amounts of precision. A living language can't be decoupled from the prevailing culture of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A worthy instructor has to develop a strategy for introducing it; the bravest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language based on a particular corpus, a body of written language of varying size and consistency. Such a corpus may contain anything from a book about literature to some famous short stories translated into modern English. I lost many a night laboring on my "proud" Fiction Corpus to form a unique genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have dissected them, reshaping them - not simply to teach the English tongue but to promote the human spirit, and to goad that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Europe, the summer of 2011. Twelve countries. 46 days. One car. One tent. One man. One woman he's just met.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I had grown up in America. Land of opportunity. I came of age in the booming 90s when everything was possible. She had grown up in Poland. She had come of age at a time when the Soviets were making sure that there wasn't even anything to eat in the country. I couldn't even properly translate the word "opportunity" into Polish.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Dance

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word dance in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word dance, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word dance is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Definition of DanceMargo on a trampoline

The word dance refers to an act of deliberate decorative movement that does not have to be planned or rehearsed or synchronized or pretty in any way and in fact requires very little intelligence to make and yet many people are supremely afraid of making it for fear of looking stupid. It can also refer to a place where this act is performed or to a kind of artifact or person related to it.

Usage of Dance in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Going back to the booth, I realized I was on an intercept course with Sacha Cohen-Krupnik. He was leading his bride-to-be by the hand. He was dragging her out onto the dance floor. When she saw me coming, she ripped her hand away and turned around. The Krupnik jerked back and tried to stop her. She ripped herself away. The Krupnik ran in front of her and blocked her path; Zoe pushed herself around. She leaned against a post for a moment, then hid herself inside the booth. The Krupnik followed.

Verse 470 from the chapter called Bohemia

She closed her eyes and leaned her head back. After a while, she yelled, "Yes!" Dropping her head and holding her huge forehead in her hand again, she looked up and nodded. "Yes," she said. "I would like to dance." She got up. I held out my hand, but she didn't take it. Squeezing herself out from inside the booth, she brushed past me and skipped more than ran toward the dance floor. Before she got there, she stopped and turned around.

Verse 482 from the chapter called Bohemia

Washington Dulles is driving the truck, I said to myself. He doesn't know how smelly it is back here. Maybe if I go to the tailgate, I can reach up and drop the tarp. No, silly: don't do that: you'll fall out the back. Then what do we do? I said to myself. Just wait, I said. It'll be fine. It's a long way to the border, though. What happens if we don't stop? What happens if we stop and Washington Dulles finds out we're all dead? That would suck. We're not going to die in the back of a truck: that would be silly. Besides, the Lord is with us. He will protect us. Wait a minute: is the Lord with us? or with them? I mean, with me? Is he with me? Am I on some kind of special mission? for the Lord? What the hell am I doing? Where am I going? What the hell am I trying to accomplish, Lord? Where are you? He'll be with you when you're dead. No, silly: he's with you all the time. I can't believe I danced with old women.

Verse 174 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Nothing in particular," she said. "I just didn't want to dance - that's all." She was lying.

Verse 674 from the chapter called Bohemia

When Jesus was announced as the Grand Master of the Cosmonauts of St. Benedict in the vestibule of the Sanctuary in Lichen, Sacha Cohen-Krupnik bowed. Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third bowed. Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's widow curtsied. Tomiko Panzer-Tank almost fell down, and Zoe avoided Jesus's gaze. I wondered whether Sacha Cohen-Krupnik recognized me as the man who danced with his bride's monkey. Probably not, I decided.

Usage of Dance in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I wish you had taken this guidebook with you; it's full of fascinating information. I don't suppose you've heard the aphorism: it's easier for a grand coach to pass through the Arch of Marble, than it is for a poor man to get into Annabel's nightclub. Of course you haven't: I just made it up; according to the guidebook, you would have to pay five hundred pounds a year to get on the members list at Annabel's. But don't bother: I'm sure it's the most artificially hip club in London. I believe they play mostly eighties music; you'd have to be willing to dance with Margaret Thatcher if you want to go there. However, it's one of Jeffrey Archer's favorite places; maybe if you stand outside the door you'll get to meet him. Alright: I don't want to make you vomit: I'll stop teasing you.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 11, Guidebooks, Paragraph 2

Next to the dolls, there was a beautifully varnished music box. I took it out from the glass case and opened it. Inside, there was a beautifully carved ballerina, ready to dance in circles to the music. So I began winding the music box, expecting to hear the sound of Bartók, or perhaps the tune of some Magyar folk song - in either case, not expecting to know the music. But, when I released the knob, the ballerina began dancing to a recognizable tune. I had to chuckle: it was Henry Mancini's theme from Love Story.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 6, The Drawing Room, Paragraph 3

But let me remind you: this does not mean we are incapable of providing spiritual guidance, something which is often neglected, if not completely ignored, but which cannot be withheld from children of any age, however old or tender they be. As the recently matured, we are in the best position to provide such leadership, and we must maintain an active interest in our roles. Forgive me for reminding you, but I do so mostly for my own sake, since I regret my physical distance from my ward. It is very debilitating. I am one of those people who must see things in order to appreciate their need. I fear that I lack the sort of maternal clairvoyance for which many women are renowned, like our mother, for example. But perhaps a woman needs her own children, so I retain hope. At any rate, I do not enjoy the physical proximity you share with Fabric. So I rely on you, and, for the time being, you must bear the double weight of our responsibilities.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 34, Propogating a Concept of Duty, Paragraph 2

He was taken to a room with drawings - many of them I recognized: by Rodin: Cambodian dancers. The rest of them were unknown, but, then again, the room was dimly lit: perhaps there wasn't enough light for me to recognize them. It was very strange: all the lamps had huge, heavy lampshades on them; they were positioned all around the room, which was very spacious, not very cluttered; there was a lot of furniture along the walls, but most of the space was unoccupied. Perhaps they had orgies here, but not tonight.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 14, Getting to the Heart of a Matter, Paragraph 50

Do not reject the guidance of the Church in order to excuse yourself - just remember that. We are not here to pick and choose; we are here to accept things in their entirety. I'm sure that once you know the particulars of the situation, you will not allow yourself indulgences. But even if you feel yourself compelled, beyond your strongest will, have faith in the Church, believe in the indissolubility of marriage, and remember: the biggest threat comes not from adultery, but from the posturing and conviction, the hollow trees and cages that mark the road to apostasy.

Partisan fans concentrated around their team's crater. The creativity of their coordinated taunts was mildly amusing. Tatum considered the metaphoric potential. – from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a pair of unlikely partners

Clark wondered what made Shephard so eager to get moving. He would have expected him to love wasting time at the hotel. He decided not to jinx it by asking him. On the way to Hotan, the bus driver put on a Turkic movie. Shephard watched. The plot was hard to follow. There was an old man. He was mourning. There were soldiers pushing people around. A young woman danced with what may have been her husband. The husband may have been the old man's son. It seemed the son was killed at some point by soldiers.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a kind of love

Most of the time, the armies of the condottieri danced around each other waiting patiently (and lucratively) for their monarchs to settle things on their own. That way both sides made money. This affair, unfortunately, had dragged on for so long, people feared, this time, bloodshed would be unavoidable.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story set in a seemingly distant time and place

Ferrari's pride was hurt. A flautist was not as prestigious as a trumpeter. At least it kept him close to the condottiero. It seemed like a safe place to be. Practicing music was better than the usual military drills. Ferrari worked while everybody else danced, but his hands were kept cool and clean. Ferrari threw himself into his new profession. He mastered the pipe and tabor, the fiffaro, and the eight-holed flaut.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story set in Renaissance Italy for all the difference it makes

The driver put in another movie. This was a costume drama. A large group gathered. The men watched women dance. An old man spoke. He looked like a chief. The dubbing was atrocious. The chief stared at one of the dancers. She was beautiful. The camera took in the crowd. All the men looked like lechers. There was more dancing.
