Dream, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's mulling over the feasibility of expanding his monstrous Fiction Corpus with yet another fiction book; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the possibility of legislating English as a universal standard. I do reject the prevailing design by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Honing one's adroitness with a language isn't like producing a stronger crankshaft. A language - a living language - is not just a tool that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue can't be cut off from the philosophical currents of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A capable teacher must develop a strategy for introducing it; the perceptive pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a particular corpus, a body of writing of varying size and consistency. Such a corpus can contain anything from a book about literature to the best fiction romance novels ever written. I watched many nights pass creating my "stupendous" Fiction Corpus to form a precise class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have framed a million words and I have examined them, reframing them - not simply to teach American vocabulary but to describe the human soul, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

Lots of people go on road trips. Not everybody criss-crosses Europe in 46 days. Especially not with a complete stranger.

As an artist, from the beginning of my adult career, my work had been devoted to the problem of body acceptance, a goal that I would later learn was shared by a whole community of people called naturists, a humble portion of which I discovered residing in Poland, a country whose cultural conservatism does not lend itself readily to forward thinking. One of those forward-thinking Polish naturists happened to be Margo.

Being from America, all I had to do in Europe was turn on the radio to hear an American song. All I had to do was walk into a movie theater to see an American movie. To be understood all I had to do was speak English. Being from Poland, she couldn't stand listening to the radio for all the political nonsense being bandied about. She didn't like watching American movies because she claimed they all ended the same way. She didn't want to speak English with me because she not only wanted to say things correctly but she wanted to say them her way and nobody had ever succeeded in teaching her how. I desperately wanted to understand. She wanted to be understood.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Dream

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word dream in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word dream, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word dream is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Dream in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Your grandfather's greatest life moment was a grand farewell to litigation. When his beautiful, peasant wife was diagnosed with pulmonary emphysema, your father's father invested everything his family had into one grand suit: the culmination of his greatest hopes and dreams. On behalf of his sickly wife, he accused the governments of the world of negligence. He claimed that they were all guilty of doing nothing to prevent your grandmother from developing a serious and severely debilitating disease, one which was irreversible - one which was caused by the presence of toxic agents in the air!

Verse 59 from the chapter called Adolescence

Jesus didn't sleep much that night. The next day, during Mass in a cemetery, Jesus slept between graves and dreamed.

Verse 774 from the chapter called Security

There was no way of fighting such a plague without guns and bullets and bombs. You could try reasoning with pirates; you could try sending them tons of grain and water and air and fuel to far-out relay stations built by once prosperous interplanetary shipping companies - but they had grain; they had water; they had air and fuel; they were sitting on top of piles of it. They starved themselves because it made them angrier; the angrier they got, the harder they fought in battle. That was their way of life. Their leaders were their leaders because they followed them. When they said, "Attack the Americans," they listened. They liked it. They wanted to conquer the entire solar system. Every little pirate boy dreamed of being a despot. Every little pirate girl dreamed of being a despot's mistress. They were sick with dreams - just like the Americans.

Verse 2 from the chapter called Bohemia

"I can't explain." I turned to your mother and said, "These moments: these moments have filled me with -" I shook my head, looking for the right words - "incredible joy, confusion, satisfaction -" I lowered my head. SATISFACTION? I SHOULD'VE SAID, 'HAPPINESS.' THAT'S MORE LIKE JOY THOUGH; SATISFACTION IS GOOD; IT CAPTURES SOMETHING MORE - MORE WHAT? MORE BASE? PRIMORDIAL? NO, NOT PRIMORDIAL; MORE BASE: THAT'S GOOD. OH, GET ON WITH IT. "These past few days have passed like a dream," I said, looking into her eyes: her big, beautiful brown almond-shaped eyes. "Your eyes are so beautiful." I got up. I lifted your mother to her feet. "I have something to give you, Zoe." Holding out her hand, I gave her three bullets. "I've had them for a while," I said, grinning rather sheepishly.

Verse 1042 from the chapter called Bohemia

Jesus would never have dreamed it would be like that. He was always full of hope! His mother was dead: he was full of hope! He took out the picture of his mother he always carried; he cried. Weeping like a newborn child, he cried for his mother. He tore out his fine hair like a young widower. He beat his head against the wall and then he smiled: he praised God for His wisdom.

Verse 74 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of Dream in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Should I not leave a sign? But what shall it say? Be faithful? Have hope? Love? Who will read my sign? Who will cross this desert? I am only kidding myself. I am the only one walking to Paradise this way.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 4, Self-image, Paragraph 5, Clauses 8-10

How often does one see the complete horizon? How can one take measure of its magnitude? If the horizon were to fall, or spin around, jump up and leave us, what would a human see? Would we see its true dimensions? Would we not be overwhelmed? Would it not be aweful? If you consider this, my sister, you will begin to understand how I feel.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 4, Self-image, Paragraph 4

I have no idea what she did or did not know; I must wonder if her actions were not informed by some sort of knowledge, or at the very least, some kind of suspicion that her husband was gravely ill. The woman was just too distraught: her behavior was too erratic not to have been influenced by this kind of situation.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 3, Wondering, Paragraph 5, Clauses 1-2

At all events, you are well aware that my judgment concerning beauty is almost unparalleled. It rivals the sibyllic judgment of our mother, whereas your judgment isn't fit to hold a candle. As I almost mentioned before, I recently had a chance to test my skills. Barbara dragged me all the way down from Jersey for the weekend so that I could support her in a date auction. Can you imagine? It's a good thing she didn't tell me about it because I probably wouldn't have gone. I would never dream of participating willfully in that sort of foolishness. It wasn't even for charity - at least I don't think it was: no respectable charity would hold a date auction at Vinnie's. Then again, I have no idea what the situation is like: God knows I haven't gone bar-hopping in a very long while - and good thing too; there were more than few unpleasant characters there that night.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 6, Judging Looks, Paragraph 5

Right now, it's still Monday morning; the sun is shining through the window: there's nothing mournful about that: it's the sign of a new beginning, the promise of a fresh week to start work, to exercise oneself before the freedom of a Friday afternoon claims the flesh. Perhaps these orderlies will shake themselves free and wake up before Albert does, but I doubt that.

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Last night, I dreamt I was in Paris.

I was in the back seat of a broad car. It was American. Cold leather warmed beneath me.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring sex work

"Never mind him," she said. "I'm more concerned with my father. He wants to marry me off. I'm not going to let him do it. Do you understand? I would rather live like a peasant in Greece with a man I love, than be sold to a prince for a pound of pennies."

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring the American dream

Bo looked. It seemed as if she were waking from a dream. She took hold of Tae's arm. She struggled to get herself up. She fell. Tae laughed. He smacked her legs. He gripped her by the torso. He lifted her to her feet. "Is this what they call enlightenment?" he asked. "Your legs are like rocks."

Bo sat in front of the fire. She devoured the last crab. Tae came with more. "Have as many as you want," he said.

– from “How Tae & Bo Took Over the World and Kung & Fu Didn't,” an apocryphal bible story featuring a strange settlement

She was a whitetail deer about to be caught once again in our headlights. Had she any idea we were stalking her-an innocent woman in the woods-what could she know? It was my dream; her nightmare. What was she to me? An image? A figure of a brave and beautiful woman? Vulnerability personified?

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring a frank discussion of sex work
