Help, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is meditating on the possibility of amplifying his weighty Fiction Corpus with another collection of top fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the idea of harnessing English as a universal language. I do challenge the enervatingly inanimate recipe by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Reinforcing a person's skills with a language isn't like producing a brighter bead. A language isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A spoken language can't be disjoined from the philosophical currents of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching people to recite English is to deprive them of its cultural context. A proper educator must have a strategy for introducing it; the perceptive pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a specific corpus, a body of written works of various scope and consistency. A corpus could contain everything from a book about literature to some real kid stories. I lost many a night forging my "unprepossessing" Fiction Corpus to form a different sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have dissected them, reshaping them - not simply to teach an American language but to promote the human spirit, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Help End the Abuse of Process With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

Though I was born in Europe, I had been brought up from a young age in America, living in states as diverse as Nebraska, Ohio and Connecticut. I was taught American values and saw reality from an American perspective. She was born and raised in a village in Poland. She went to work in the nearest town. The nearest city seemed like the center of the world. The American perspective was not something she was ever planning to see.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Help

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word help in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word help, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word help is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Help in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"Don't you understand?" she asked. "Don't you see what it does? It turns me into a monster, the way I was last night: arbitrary and capricious. You think I didn't want to dance with him? I did - but I panicked. What was I supposed to do? Tell him: 'Yes, I want to dance with you' when my heart was going to explode? when I couldn't breathe? When you came up, I was finished. I was done. I wanted to dance again. But he was gone. Was I supposed to feel worse because he had left? He abandoned me. That was his fault. I have to keep going. I have to appreciate the few moments of peace I have. That's the way it is with my emotions. One minute, they're fine; the next minute, they're not. I have to live with that. I have to accept that, but I don't want it to be like that. That's my problem," she moaned. "I'm so helpless, and you're a stranger. What am I doing?"

"I'm sure he understands," I said.

Verses 686-687 from the chapter called Bohemia

Reserve Army units were small and efficient. They were specialists. Perhaps these weapons were for them. I had seen Reserve Army troops guarding University Bridge. What were they doing here? thought Jesus. Were they here to help the Brigade? Where the hell was the Brigade? The streets were almost empty. So was the alley, until there came a white electric truck floating around the corner.

Verse 33 from the chapter called Arms

In those days, frustration was rampant. Insecurity was plaguing the masses. People were afraid. Private security firms were ascendant; only the rich could afford them. The most prominent, SECURITA, gained a government contract. They began spying on people. They began arresting them. Sometimes, they got the hard jobs, and sometimes, they got the easy ones (when the terrorists invaded Poland, they were placed in charge of the southern frontiers - far away from the action). There was injustice everywhere: an atmosphere of pressurized vengeance. There was absolutely nothing that the average man could do. People didn't trust the law: they feared the courts and hated the procuracy - even rich men resented it. The police were often helpless. Armed forces fostered suicide.

Verse 332 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Doctors are helpless, I agree. The choice is up to you."

Verse 635 from the chapter called Bohemia

At nine o'clock, enough people were dancing for me to venture out onto the dance floor. I couldn't help but wish that Zoe were there.

His most recent visit has confirmed my opinion: Nike is a slave to his own comfort - and his bonds are such, and his potential freedom of such an unreasonable nature, that Reason cannot help him: for Nike is also a slave to Reason, and comfort is very reasonable. Naturally, I would otherwise praise his analytical devotion, but in these circumstances, I must accept that his mind and his body, that the appetite and reason are conspiring against his soul.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 22, Encountering Poverty, Paragraphs 87-93

As far I was concerned, among the three of us, I knew the least. Of this, I was certain. I was not enjoying it, but there was nothing I could do except wait. I was pretending like I was just helping out, minding my own business. It was a terrible feeling, especially when I was alone with Albert.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 4, The Fourth Day, Part 2, The Assembly & Government Reform, Section 6, Being Obedient, Paragraph 3

Oh, my dear sister: I had to contemplate those things - I couldn't help myself. I daresay my loins were inflamed: I was so conscious of our physical bodies. It made me uncomfortable when I had to wash Fabric with my hands, even though I knew there was no harm in it. I was very glad when Olympia put forth a difficult question. It took my mind off the fact that I, a strange man, was washing someone else's child.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 1, Bathing Young Children, Paragraph 4

"Hey, Nike, where are we going?" I asked. But he didn't know. I guessed he was trying to extricate us from the maze; I decided very decisively that I would try and help him.

Jing found solace in Bei's arms. At first, it seemed natural. The two had worked closely on the textiles, Fu having abandoned them in favor of helping Kung. It was later discovered Kung had, in fact, been neglecting Bei and sleeping with Fu. Jing and Bei were now both jilted lovers. It wasn't long before they were whispering in each other's ears, holding each other's arms, staying overnight in each other's tents. When Jing was seen moving intimate apparel into Bei's tent, the rumors began.

The orbits of Captain Orbitz as told and retold by trillions of Orion systemizens, indeed systemizens from across many a galaxy, never fluctuated from their purpose of helping Captain Tycho "Tych" Orbitz conquer his home galaxy. Tych was firm from the day he resigned his commision as a courier in the Star Alliance to the day he vanished into space. Many were afraid he would come back. Many more hoped he would. They thought he was out pirating somewhere with Lalunia, his pheromonically irresistible great-great-great-great-niece, or ruling a planet with the beautifully blue Sara Lee, or fighting the jilted queen of the Astrazeneca or playing chess with CAROline the computer that loved him. They didn't know he was dead. They had no idea he had died long before he had even resigned his commission. Before he hijacked the tesseract marking the beginning of his rebellion or piloted the stolen ship Nautilus into the singularity the man had physically removed his own dead body from the bridge.
