Laugh, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's contemplating the thought of enhancing his outsized Fiction Corpus with a book about science fiction classics; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the prospect of honoring English as everybody's second language. I don't regard highly the altogether ordinary game plan by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Enhancing a person's handiness with a language isn't like producing a stronger steel. A language - a spoken tongue - is not just an instrument that you can teach yourself to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A shared language cannot be riven from the prevailing culture of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. A worthy educator must have a blueprint for introducing it; the discerning student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words based on a specific corpus, a set of writing of varying size and consistency. Such a corpus could contain anything from a book about literature to some really short bedtime stories. I burned many candles forging my "ponderous" Fiction Corpus to form a specific sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have enumerated them, reshaping them - not merely to teach an American tongue but to promote the human spirit, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Laugh

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word laugh in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word laugh, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word laugh is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Laugh in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"She's got a velocipede, too. She's pretty rich. Anyway, to finish with the car: we said we're going to buy it a backpack: send it on a pilgrimage: to the Black Madonna! It's come of age: it's eighteen years old: the car can go on its own: it's not gonna hurt anyone. It'll keep up!" Sapper laughed.

Verse 222 from the chapter called Adolescence

That man had a golden hand. He was a craftsman, having excelled at all things in construction: masonry and carpentry, welding. He had built Jesus's grandmother a beautiful bower in her garden. Then he started drinking. Meanwhile, the woman had a house and a job, a beautiful family. She started drinking. She drank everything to pieces. Her husband left. She lost her job, then the house. Her son left. She was alone. Her own mother refused to recognize her. She crashed in basements. The man crashed in basements. That's how they met: they both crashed in basements. They found they had a common interest. What a model marriage they were! The town laughed.

Verse 346 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Of course," I laughed. "You're the last Panzer-Tank heir." I was about to say: unless your half-brother and the rest of your family are still alive on Mars - but I stopped myself. That would've been stupid.

Verse 573 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Laugh in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

INDIE: But when I'm with my husband, I will speak to him in Hungarian, and, when he laughs, you will wonder how badly I am making fun of you.

NIKE: I have a friend who speaks Hungarian.

INDIE: Is that a threat?

NIKE: As Khrushchev would say, I can only answer threats with more threats.

INDIE: You really like Khrushchev, don't you?

NIKE: He was a horrible human being.

INDIE: Did he beat his wife?

NIKE: You know what: I don't know.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 27, Penetration, Paragraphs 78-85

During Nike's visit, I was introduced to his new 'partner.' He was a central figure of my dream - a man I only met a few days ago: a man who is rather strange in himself, even standing next to Nike - although, I suppose, we are so immune to Nike that he hardly stands out any more. But even he was behaving unusually. "Andre," he said, introducing me, "I'd like you to meet my new partner, Luka. And welcome to our beautiful honeymoon!" He threw his head back and laughed. He thought it was pretty funny. I didn't know what he was talking about, but I smiled anyway. His partner didn't seem to be embarrassed.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 2, Introducing Male Friends, Paragraph 1

MÉL: I would let my skirt fall down my thighs. I would spread my legs. One time, I wasn't wearing underwear. Why are you laughing? You think it's funny?

NIKE: Yeah, I think it's funny.

MÉL: You want me to stop?

NIKE: No, keep going.

MÉL: Alright. Where was I?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 12, Economic Justice, Paragraphs 26-30

Strolling through the empty hall, I laughed at the mess of teasers on the floor and all around - various clubs advertising their many-storied attractions, bars with Wednesday drink specials, free coke with pizza. There was another kind of mess in Luke's apartment - the absolutely filthy kind. Modesty forbids me from describing it; I was compelled at the very least to throw the trash away and gather up the various personal effects.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 2, Letting It Steam, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

Meanwhile, it was Indiana whose privilege it was to smile triumphantly, and, as you presented yourself as the oblivious newcomer, it was entirely natural for her to turn her head and smile in your direction. I, on the other hand, was busy observing what was going on; there was no stopping my concern for my dear little brother: I heard the joke, and took note of its cleverness - but instead of laughing I turned my eyes to you: to the picture of abject foolishness that presented itself before this new-come beauty.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Gog laughed. "Why would I want you?"

"I was born to a woman in his harem who claims to be your sister."

"What kind of trick is this?"

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring dragons

"How did you know the Captain was a girl?"

"I wouldn't call her that. She's old."

Tatum shook her head. "They all look like back-country cretins to me."

Neal laughed. "It's the whiskers." He pointed discreetly. "That's a man. That's a woman. That's a man. I'm not sure about that one."

"How can you tell?"

Neal winked. "I can smell it."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring an alien ghetto on the moon

Sammy D suddenly pecked Davis on the lips like an eager, young sparrow. Her victim looked shocked. Sammy D laughed. She watched Davis run out of the stable like a little piglet. A smile crept onto the former fetish club performer's face. She whispered, "Let the games begin."

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story set in Long Island

"There is nothing to savor in the spilling of blood," said Magog. "I do not mourn these men their lost lives. I mourn my inability to prevent this slaughter. More than anything else, you should know I hate to be helpless."

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man who spills a lot of blood

The women laughed. They went to Tatum's favorite bar, The Naked Buttocks. Tatum sat her guest on one of the stools. She pulled her own seat close. She kept brushing her coveralls against the woman's pantyhose. Miss April said, "I hear you were married."

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

(FLETCHER and GREY GOOSE laugh.)

FLETCHER: You must forgive my mother, Alice. She likes to jump to conclusions.

GREY GOOSE: We're talking to the brand new owner of an Austrolux Technologies dishwasher.

FLETCHER: Look, Ma. No more greasy hands.

MS. JACKSON: That's why you've been sneaking around.

GREY GOOSE: You look very grateful. Don't forget the three things which everybody is owed.

MS. JACKSON: Thank you very much.

GREY GOOSE: You're welcome.

FLETCHER: 'You don't float around staring off into space? You don't flinch when I reach out my hand? You are a fish. You're a catfish. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to tease you. I'm serious. I want to know what's wrong. Are you sick?'

ALICE: 'No.'

FLETCHER: 'You certainly don't seem healthy. I'm going to Father. Maybe he knows what's wrong with you.'

ALICE: 'Fait, Toc. I fay tay you.'

FLETCHER: Toc is my name, by the way; they're my initials. Father is John Jackson, the last of the mutineers - not our real father. 'Alright: speak.'

ALICE: 'Many year aro when you were ritter, te women try to escape in a poat fur of hor. Te men say tat tey fix it, put tey not fix it. Tey laugh when I catch te crap ant ah te women fa in te vater.'

FLETCHER: 'I know this story. Susannah, you're no stranger to water. Don't tell me you're afraid that I would put holes in my canoe and make you fall in.'

FLETCHER: 'You're not saying that you might actually kill me if I humiliated you?'

ALICE: 'I tey you, Toc. You ask me; I tey you.'

– ACT II, lines 81-90

FLETCHER: Oh, Money! God of first fruits! Bringer of knowledge! Harvester of truth! Where would Man be without thy cold kindness? Give me your hand. Let the lorikeets squeak out the rhythm of our steps. We'll dance a polonaise. I'll sashay you around the South Pacific. Who could prove to be a better partner? No man could be as faithful; no woman either. Even if she bleed by the moon, her temper is not as mild. Obedience notwithstanding, her character can seem, at times, positively restive. Feistiness is a woman's most vicious virtue. It can burn a man's pride even while it warms his heart. In truth, a man who marries money is liable to finding a bed so stiff the kingfisher would laugh. Without it, one would cry at night like the ghost bird. Thanks to money, nature is Man's slave. Weathering the vicissitudes of fortune, the wealthy man works the ground for as long as the ground does not work him. When that day comes, let's hope that our money has not defrauded us of our nature.

Usage of Laugh in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

"Your necklace spells Indiana with two 'n's. Only the English and the Hungarian spell it like that."

"You should be a detective."

"Only a Hungarian would call András by his Hungarian name."

Indiana laughed. "I'm so silly. I forgot I gave it away. Do you know where I was born? It wasn't Hungary."

"You were born in Austria."

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might calm one's sense of distaste depending on your outlook

Orbitz Número Dos laughed. "In this room there is only one person. We just exist in two seperate bodies." Orbitz Number One opened his mouth to speak. Orbitz Número Dos interrupted him. "I know what you're thinking," he said. "I'm flattered."

"Answer my question," said Orbitz Number One. "Are you saying I can't change my destiny?"

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written with Stanislaw Lem in mind, if you know who that is

The day after my own mother attacked me she had the gall to complain to me that her wrists hurt. She told me she would never forget what I did. I wanted to laugh but my wife was there. That's how it got started.

– from “The Backed-Up Toilet,” a literature story based on something that happened, namely to the author

Something drains from above. It is my comrade. She pours in through the hole of my skull. We are together again. I open my bags and pull out memories for us to share. She in her ink-stained petticoats. Me adjusting my stockings. We have just pressed five thousand copies of Workers Unite. We are hot to pleasure ourselves.

We will honor every struggle with a voiceless laugh. We will be happy to be here. We will find a way to live again. We embrace.

– from “Shovels Fall,” an interesting story about the cycle of armed struggle throughout history

My father never lied to my mother about going up to see his old girlfriend. He lied to me. So I wouldn't say anything. So my mother could find out about it later. From the receipts. It was part of the grand scheme. To bring things to a head. To back up the toilet of their lives. To bring up the festering crap they had tucked away in their basement all these years. Like the accusation that my father had raped my mother. On some night twelve years ago. When she had said no. And he had done it anyway. I wanted to laugh but my wife was there. Her father raped her mother. Allegedly. My wife is convinced its true. Despite only having heard one side of it. If it were as bad as it sounds I doubt her parents would still be together. But they are. Like my parents. They've reconciled. For all intents and purposes they're a happily married couple. They hold hands in the street. While my wife wont sleep with me. Because on some rainy afternoon two years ago I told her I wanted to rape her.
