Strip, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is meditating on the concept of reinforcing his puny Fiction Corpus with a fable about the many types of fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the prospect of utilizing English as an international standard. I don't think highly of the unrewarding routine with which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Boosting one's skills with a language isn't like producing a stronger brace. A language - a living tongue - is not merely a tool that you can teach yourself to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A shared tongue can't be cleaved from the philosophical currents of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A proper instructor has to develop a technique for introducing it; the perceptive student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of written works of varying size and consistency. They can include everything from a book about literature to some real speculative fiction. I watched many nights pass developing my "monumental" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have framed a million words and I have anatomized them, reshaping them - not just to teach English vocabulary but to promote the human spirit, and to prod that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Strip

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word strip in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word strip, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word strip is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Strip in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Now, in those days, in Poland, there was a law that said you couldn't publish or broadcast an alleged criminal's last name; nor could you publish or broadcast his photograph without adding a black strip over his eyes. Unfortunately, most of the alleged criminals who made the news were public officials or else otherwise famous people whose names and likenesses were universally recognized. Thus, your father had to be referred to in the press as Jesus H. - even though his father's name (which was Jesus's name as well) could be mentioned in the same sentence. This farce was well known to the public, but it gained new meaning when Jesus was released from jail and the black strip disappeared from over his eyes.

Verse 199 from the chapter called Security

For thirty-three hours and a half, we proceeded slowly (in fact, as slowly as possible) from the town square to St. Hedwig's Basilica, where we stripped ourselves to the waist, took off our shoes, and prostrated ourselves in silence. When the Master decided, he began to whip us. (The Master was elected; we chose the weakest man among us). When the Master started whipping, we began chanting the Stabat Mater. Assuming a position which indicated for what kind of sin we wished to atone, we would wait for the Master to heal us. The murderer was supposed to lie on his face - thankfully, none of us did that. The adulterer lay on his back; perjurers, on their sides, holding up three fingers; disobedient children, with their asses up in the air; people who didn't go to church on Sunday, in a crab; corrupt officials, holding up one leg, exposing their genitals. Then, we would rise, form a circle, and beat ourselves, singing songs of praise to the Savior, who endured much worse for the sake of our sins. We would walk, with banners and crosses held before us. In the nighttime, we held lanterns - all the while singing songs and beating ourselves with whips. (Jesus bought his in a sex shop.)

Verse 479 from the chapter called Adolescence

"It's got stripes - white and yellow. I like it."

"Those are papal colors."

"I know," she said.

They crossed the road.

"Who's that?"

Verses 352-356 from the chapter called Security

"God knew His servant was remiss: in granting my wish - my request for a sibling! - He knew I could only pay Him with ingratitude. He sends me a sister and I send her back! What wretched curse behooves my soul? Must I have chosen such a destiny? What fate conspires with wolves and dogs to make me find your broken neck? O wretched curiosity! (whose boon for Man far outstrips its bane!) Why sniff? So many things can be poison! What sensations must have twirled around your virgin head! They drove you to the open window - for air, no doubt (even though its unadulterated nourishment has long been lacking). What confusion must have taxed your noble mind, which only hours before had entertained simple thoughts of worship. 'Holy Mary! Mother of God!' you had said. 'Pray for us sinners: now and at the hour of our death.' She was waiting for you, child! You are with her now in heaven: with our Holy Mother Mary! God bless you, child! You are the instrument of my reformation! The lamb of my destiny! Tell your heavenly hosts that I remember: I have taken to heart - I understand this cryptic reminder of theirs. For too long have I lived in the company of dogs and wolves without lifting a finger in the face of their lies and confabulations. When I asked for you, beloved sister, I was devoted to the truth. We had sung the true words: this land is your land, we had sung. This land is my land. Fate will have to find all those wolves and dogs who conspired against you, child. My punishment has already been paid. There is no greater penalty for a lonely shepherd than his one and only lamb. But when your enemies meet their ends, beloved child, they will not have met a lonely shepherd, but an angry shepherd in wolf's clothing.

Verse 608 from the chapter called Adolescence

His first victories came in the local courts of Poland, where he moved from village to village with his sickly wife, accusing his richer neighbors of negligently causing her pain and suffering by triggering her status athmaticus with their wantonly placed piles of pig manure, with their lack of strip-cropping or any other method of controlling wind erosion, or, most of all, with their highly tortious and completely unacceptable practices of burning crop stubble and debris after harvest: how could the benefits of weed control and a little potash compare to the precious health of his beloved wife, who was now bedridden for months as a result of this gross negligence. Kill those disgusting nematodes with chemicals, but please don't clear the ground with open flame! Use propane-gas, no matter how expensive it is - that woman's life depends on it! And for these many months of lost work: please compensate!

Usage of Strip in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I prayed. Nike could not harm this beautiful creature: this lonely woman framed by shadow: this faint white blur of something sacred - divinely profane: a strange creature of different fabrics, white and black, her veil was it? A disembodied head: a strip dangling in darkness: a bird with a shimmering tail. What kind of bird? a dove? a penguin? a beautiful canvasback pochard in flight? About to be shot?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 22, Encountering Poverty, Paragraph 49

Among these photographs, there were a lot of small decorative objects: homemade objets d'art - like: cotton-ball snowmen with carefully glued faces. There was pottery with fingerprints. There were men made out of alphabet blocks, with felt strips for legs and arms and big felt hats on top of wooden spherical heads. Their faces were simply painted; they had bells for hands and feet. I picked one up and it jingled for me. I really liked it. I smiled. It had the letter 'M' on its belly. I put it back on the shelf, next to the letter 'I' man and the letter 'K,' both of whom were sitting in the shade of a tall communion candle. "These must be Olympia's," I thought, as I carefully closed the glass door.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 6, The Drawing Room, Paragraph 5

Upon reaching the downstairs room, I closed the door. Going to the sofa, I began to strip. I unbuttoned half my blouse before I tore it off. Unzipping my skirt, I started tugging it down my thighs. I cursed myself for wearing stockings. Rolling one of them down, I looked at the clock: one minute before midnight. Tearing off the rest of my underwear, I cursed myself for wearing so much clothing - but, standing in the middle of the room stark naked, I now approached the fireplace. Kneeling before it, I opened its doors. I looked inside: it was very dirty; the flue was closed. I opened it, letting a small cloud of ash fall: I cursed myself for not preparing it earlier. I looked at the clock. There was still time. I turned myself around, my back facing the fireplace, and, positioning my hands behind me, I felt the cold tile.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 30, Presenting Oneself to a Potential Husband, Paragraph 13

Turning back to the contents of the closet, I noticed how many suits Albert had. He had black ones and gray ones, pinstriped and plaid ones, white, blue and purple, and even some red ones - simply wonderful, I thought. How marvelous! How I wouldn't mind having a collection like this: hats and suspenders, neckties galore, socks of all colors and cufflinks and collars, bowties and buckles worth hundreds of dollars - and shoelaces! by color and length and fabric and thickness, all had been laid in their separate places. It was magnificent. The shirts too were arranged by color and fabric: synthetics on one side and natural fabrics on the other. It seemed like that closet contained almost everything a gentleman could ever need. The only thing I couldn't find was a tailcoat. And of course, the shoes must have been somewhere else.
