Head, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to consider the soundness of amplifying his formidable Fiction Corpus with some real fantasy stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the prospect of promulgating English as a worldwide lingua franca. I do doubt the blah blah blah design by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Fortifying a person's dexterity with a language isn't like promoting a stronger mast. A language - a spoken language - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to wield with greater amounts of precision. A spoken language cannot be insulated from the shared logic of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A worthy educator has to find a method of introducing it; the prudent pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying size and consistency. A corpus could include anything from a book about literature to some really weird fiction. I suffered many a sleepless night laboring on my "unimposing" Fiction Corpus to form a precise class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have assembled a million words and I have broken them down, reformulating them - not merely to teach an American tongue but to defend the human spirit, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On Monday, I arrived in Europe. By Wednesday I had bought a car. By Friday I had met the woman who a few months later would end up having travelling 6,000 miles across Europe with me.

I had come to Europe to experience European naturism, a movement whose philosophy matched my aesthetic of body acceptance and whose organizational structure and leadership I had thought almost exclusively restricted to the western half of the continent. I was shocked to learn that naturism had an official home in Poland, a country not especially known for its liberal culture. I was less shocked to discover that the home was owned by a Dutchman, but even more shocked to learn that it had been largely built by Margo.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Head

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word head in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word head, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word head is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Head in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Meanwhile, as the battle escalated into the night, a small company of brave terrorists escaped by jumping from the windows of buildings. They were headed south and reappeared a few kilometers later at Kummersdorf, where Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third, your grandfather, owned and operated a spaceport. It was called 'Panzer-Tank Spaceport at Kummersdorf' - your grandfather had many spaceports, one of which was at Kummersdorf. The terrorists took over the spaceport and held it for two days. When it was recaptured by Panzer-Tank's own security forces (the Panzer-Tank Spaceport Police) they discovered that the terrorists had been preparing for a launch - in fact, the launch vehicle was moments away from lift-off when the control room was seized. People were fascinated by this news.

Verse 677 from the chapter called Adolescence

Truly, your grandfather is merciful. After your mother's head was taken, I carried you in my arms. I brought you to your grandfather. I offered him my neck, but when he saw your beautiful head, he spared my life.

Verse 15 from the chapter called Invocation

The Brigade might've been relocated (or disbanded even, considering the Union army's expansion in those days) if not for the efforts made by northern districts in Wroclaw to lobby the President's office. Their local economies were intimately tied to the presence of a Polish army base and Handerek, belonging to the political party whose coalition was ruling Parliament (with single-digit support ratings in local polls), could not afford to lose a single district in the upcoming election. The bureaucratic mess in Warsaw helped, and, as long as Handerek made sure the soldiers of the Twenty-third didn't starve to death, Poland's defense minister was willing to look the other way. Without his support, no one, especially not the head of Section 1-A (the administrative section of Poland's general staff), was going to be convinced - by Lipski or any of his higher-placed friends - to do anything to change the god-awful status quo. Lipski was on his own - with a rising suicide rate, and no better method of upholding effectiveness other than harsh discipline and merciless drills.

Verse 18 from the chapter called Arms

"I must compliment him once more," your grandfather continued. "This work is truly amazing: right down to the last detail. You see this little crack in the pyramid? Do you know the story behind that crack?" I shook my head.

Verse 58 from the chapter called Childhood

Usage of Head in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

In the backseat of a broad car - it was American - the upholstery was cold. It was leather. I smelled its tanned freshness. I rubbed its surface. It was smooth - like a lady's backside. The headrest blocked my view. It was dark. I turned. I didn't have a head. There was no reflection in the glass. I had a hand - nothing else. I felt the leather getting warm beneath me. What was it touching? I had no buttocks. My hand passed through the space where my buttocks should have been. I was a ghost.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 19, Interpreting Religious Symbols, Paragraph 2

Thinking you jealous, I enquired whether this might be the cause of your distemper. Looking rather bemused, you shook your head languidly, trying to assure me that you were "by no means" jealous: "in fact," I recall you saying, "she executed the piece quite attractively.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 3, A Man's Charm, Paragraph 5, Clauses 4-6

But Macy was shaking his head: he said there were still plenty of situations where such desperation would be necessary. I agreed, of course, and I began telling him the story of our second cousin, Stefan, who, as you know, sort of ran off to get married. "He went to school in Prague," I told him, "and he met someone there - a beautiful woman.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 13, Bringing Up a Delicate Subject, Paragraph 5, Clauses 1-3

I do not know if I can do them justice. I am also afraid because they do involve you, my sister. But perhaps, if I can explain their nature first, you will not be so offended. Indeed, I feel as though you are much more prepared to understand my visions than anyone else. Reading your letter, I wonder whether you might not sometimes experience a similar phenomenon. But I am getting ahead of myself. I should begin by describing these things to you.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 4, Self-image, Paragraph 6

I'm getting ahead of myself: I was sitting there in that bathroom, letting it steam, while I sat there obsessing about a bottle of alcohol. It was so trivial. There was no real necessity of bringing a bottle - I hadn't promised anything. I should not have looked silly going there empty-handed - after all, it's Nike we're talking about. I could've left before the party and come back shortly afterwards with a bottle. Nike probably would've come with me. Or else he would've let me go; I would've insisted. He would've said it were silly to do so, but I would've looked over my shoulder and smilingly said, "It's for my own good!"

The light emitting diodes of the console spelled out the time. It was the middle of the night. The dashboard, awash in a dim glow, seemingly floated-a stage lit with miniature footlights. It was polyvinyl chloride. It was dark-like burgundy. Hard, smooth, horizontal, finite, it complemented the straight and endless road. It was: the cross of the crucifixion. I blinked. Was that right? Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LUKE: (to ALICE) I have no idea.

MS. JACKSON: I was wrong to bring her here. I exposed her to my husband's lust. I knew it would happen; I wanted it. I wanted to see her crushed. I wanted the pain inflicted on me to be passed upon another. I apologize. It was wrong of me to want that. Lord, save Kokomo from this awful scourge. I beg of you. Don't let her live like this in shame. Don't let this sodomy continue!

LUKE: Sheila.

ALICE: Did you hear that?

LUKE: If you had to do something wrong to do something right, you would do it. Say I had to bail blokes up 'cause they were all crook in the head; that'd be bloody beaut - if I had to do it.

ALICE: What are you talking about?

LUKE: Do you know what Kokomo is trying to do?

ALICE: Yes.

LUKE: You do?

ALICE: We just talked about it.

I'm going to love you for the rest of my life. So help me God, I will. You don't have to run away anymore. You don't have to be afraid that someday you're going to want to hurt me. I will never give you cause.'

ALICE: 'You ton't know tis.'

FLETCHER: 'I do know it. I may be young, but I'm not stupid. I know what I'm doing. I'm following my heart. Even if a thousand men-of-war were to show up this very afternoon with a thousand brides for me to choose from, I wouldn't leave you: not for all the Englishwomen in the world. Who took care of the sprawlers with me? Who threw me Johnny Mills to save young Polly's life? You did. Do you remember that day when the wave nearly swept those infants away? Who saved their lives? It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
