Heart, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is kicking around the potential of enhancing his hefty Fiction Corpus with a collection of science fiction reviews; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the soundness of utilizing English as the world's second language. I do doubt the uninspiring routine with which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Upgrading one's proficiency with a language isn't like launching a larger dome. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to use with a greater amount of precision. A language can't be torn from the shared logic of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to rob her of its cultural context. A proper teacher must develop a plan for introducing it; the smartest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words based on a specific corpus, a body of written works of various scope and consistency. They could contain anything from a book about literature to some very short stories. I lost many a sleepless night laboring on my "awe-inspiring" Fiction Corpus to form a unique type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have sorted them, reformulating them - not just to teach American vocabulary but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to provoke that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

I had come to Europe to experience European naturism, a movement whose philosophy matched my aesthetic of body acceptance and whose organizational structure and leadership I had thought almost exclusively restricted to the western half of the continent. I was shocked to learn that naturism had an official home in Poland, a country not especially known for its liberal culture. I was less shocked to discover that the home was owned by a Dutchman, but even more shocked to learn that it had been largely built by Margo.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Heart

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word heart in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word heart, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word heart is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Heart in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Forgive me, child, when I say that I found her, at first, only somewhat attractive. Her forehead was huge; her chin, nonexistent. Only later did I fully realize how well the two complemented each other - it required a sophisticated taste, one which I did not yet possess - but, nevertheless, even the most sophisticated taste would have required some sort of refinement to accept her beauty for what it was: complex and unrepentant. Unearthly was the best word. She was half-Japanese and half-Martian, which made her broad and narrow at the same time. It gave her a short and straight and yet upturned nose that anywhere else would've been ugly, but which on her was essential to the whole. It was a package of such unexpected brilliance that the parts were too bold to allow for quick and easy appreciation of the angelic splendor that shone from within and without. She was light. She was truly an angel. Hers was the most serene and gentle complexion I would ever come to value, and, at first, it struck me as rather odd. It was square and round, flat and curved, with almond-shaped eyes whose lids folded around her eyeballs - they were beautiful eyes. I came to love them with all my heart. What a strange and complex face your mother had.

Verse 442 from the chapter called Bohemia

WOOSH! went the silenced gun, and WHIZ! went the silenced bullet - right through the man's heart.

Verse 1189 from the chapter called Security

"God knew His servant was remiss: in granting my wish - my request for a sibling! - He knew I could only pay Him with ingratitude. He sends me a sister and I send her back! What wretched curse behooves my soul? Must I have chosen such a destiny? What fate conspires with wolves and dogs to make me find your broken neck? O wretched curiosity! (whose boon for Man far outstrips its bane!) Why sniff? So many things can be poison! What sensations must have twirled around your virgin head! They drove you to the open window - for air, no doubt (even though its unadulterated nourishment has long been lacking). What confusion must have taxed your noble mind, which only hours before had entertained simple thoughts of worship. 'Holy Mary! Mother of God!' you had said. 'Pray for us sinners: now and at the hour of our death.' She was waiting for you, child! You are with her now in heaven: with our Holy Mother Mary! God bless you, child! You are the instrument of my reformation! The lamb of my destiny! Tell your heavenly hosts that I remember: I have taken to heart - I understand this cryptic reminder of theirs. For too long have I lived in the company of dogs and wolves without lifting a finger in the face of their lies and confabulations. When I asked for you, beloved sister, I was devoted to the truth. We had sung the true words: this land is your land, we had sung. This land is my land. Fate will have to find all those wolves and dogs who conspired against you, child. My punishment has already been paid. There is no greater penalty for a lonely shepherd than his one and only lamb. But when your enemies meet their ends, beloved child, they will not have met a lonely shepherd, but an angry shepherd in wolf's clothing.

Verse 608 from the chapter called Adolescence

They laughed heartily. Jesus charged with his imaginary spear and pretended he was being overwhelmed by rhinoceri. Then he pretended that one of their horns had impaled his perineum. Zoe laughed, but she didn't partake in the foolery and kept walking calmly until she saw the ridges.

Verse 459 from the chapter called Security

Oh, you are so confused. I love you, child. I carried you in my arms across the deserts of Mars. I love you so very much, but you don't know me! You don't remember me! How can you love me? Listen to your mother, my child. She is dead, but if you listen to her beautiful words - if you pay attention - you will come to know me, child. You will love me. Deep in my heart, I know you will trust me - just like your mother.

Verse 17 from the chapter called Invocation

Usage of Heart in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Christie's hue struck a personal chord with me; I had once seriously considered dying my own boring hair a similar color. I confessed as much to Macy, and was quite surprised when he echoed my fascination. This inspired a very intimate conversation, the most intimate we had ever had; that night I remarked to myself how much we had grown as friends, how close to each other's hearts we had finally come, especially in those last few hours, and, suddenly infatuated with his openness, I felt quite safe judging him the best of my friends. I was not yet aware of my latent jealousy, but my ignorance was not to last.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 6, Third Party Intervention, Paragraph 1, Clauses 11-15

Now tell me honestly, am I not like a brother to you? We are more twin than meets the eye, even if you don't like to admit that no wife in this whole wide world could ever know your heart better than I do. What strange woman could possibly hope to understand all your contradictions? to know your mind and to speak to you as if speaking to her own soul?

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 8, Loneliness, Paragraph 1

But, as much as he thought he loved her, or, shall we say, obsessed over her, Nike had to admit, however painfully, that the two women he met in that room that night were at least equally, if not exponentially, more engrossing.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 14, Getting to the Heart of a Matter, Paragraph 52

Now I don't presume to understand everything, but I am rather convinced that these judges have abandoned themselves to the caprice of human emotion. The light of cold reason will not warm a bleeding heart, and these hearts will continue to pander to whatever they feel is the latest and most just cause. Read the dissent: it doesn't matter whether you agree or not, you have to admit it's a eulogy to reason. It systematically lays down everything that I once understood intuitively; it explains everything that I once thought obvious. Then it poses a challenge: to prove that non-traditional families are the absolute equivalent of traditional ones. Is that not cunning? For who could ever prove that the traditional family is not the best type of family?

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 18, The Role of the Judicious Mind, Paragraph 5

Like streams of consciousness converging, former thoughts and current questions began flooding my mind. My heart was in danger. I took a deep breath and I held it in my chest, as if to reinforce the floodgates cradling my heart. I had to protect her from being overwhelmed by my sick and moiling stomach, or the storm clouds of my mind. I began a deep and steady breathing, calmly pumping away the feeling with my diaphragm, blowing out my nose, trying to dissipate my thoughts. But my thoughts - even without the weight of feeling welling up against me, pressuring my soul, churning my stomach - these thoughts were not dissolvable. They would not go away, and how could I let them infuse my heart? that fountain of dangerous feeling? that chemical dynamo that would send them shooting to my throat - give them voice! - no! that would send them bursting through my mouth in sentences of self-destructing rancor - an explosive solution, one which I would not allow to break my stony face.

Ferrari agreed. It wasn't easy to keep his promise. His brother could barely keep the snot from piling on his upper lip. Every time Ferrari had to stand back and watch the concertmaster pull out his purse, pure envy pervaded his heart.

Junior prayed. "Lord, I have committed, as you must know, acts which, by the local standards of my community, would probably be considered depraved. I fully admit my licentiousness, as You would no doubt call it, was practiced on a more or less biblical scale. I realize now my debauchery served no purpose other than my own self-gratification, though other people's pleasure was enhanced through my efforts. Never mind. I'm sorry. If You can find it in your vast, not totally congested heart to forgive me, I'm begging you, let me marry Nyota without punishing her for my transgressions. I love her." Junior broke down and cried.

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring an affront to morality

Gog sighed. He turned away. The words had been meant to relieve him. Instead, they had cut apart the hole in his heart. He bit his lip. He said, "I neglected my duty. I worked hard to climb that mountain. It was too much to see that I had failed, as if everything I had ever done had been in vain." He stared into Mithra's eyes. His voice deepened. The words seemed to come from the bottom of his soul. He said, "I don't want to turn from the things I believe. I want to follow them. I want to find them."

The wisp of white moved. She quickened pace. Was she scared? Nikki stepped on a branch. I heard it crack. My heart leapt. I glanced at the figure. She wouldn't stop. Had she not heard? Dorothea didn't like to talk about it. Her parents had been upstart middle-class Greek converts to an elite Reformed church on Long Island. Her long, thick nose matched perfectly with her high cheekbones and the thick lower lip of her almost symmetrically decahedral face. Her large, green peach-pit-shaped eyes melted many a man's heart. The only thing she hated were her legs.

FLETCHER: I believe in the strength of our love.

KOKOMO: Do you love me?

FLETCHER: With all my heart.

KOKOMO: Are there any other new beliefs?

FLETCHER: You're in a bit of a hurry.

KOKOMO: I'm not getting any younger.

FLETCHER: I believe in the Catholic Church.

KOKOMO: You are not Catholic.

FLETCHER: I will be. I won't stand for any more impediments. I will adore God, worship Mary, and venerate the saints - as long as I can ask your hand in marriage.

LESBIAN: I'm not afraid of anything.

MS. JACKSON: Neither am I. I'm not afraid anymore. I'm not afraid of arson or gossip or what people might say if they knew about us. I've been set free from all of those things. I'm no longer afraid of being hurt. Oh, Homo! Do you know what I suffered? It was worse than any prison. The walls were all around my heart. It was like being perpetually pinched. I'm going to love you for the rest of my life. So help me God, I will. You don't have to run away anymore. You don't have to be afraid that someday you're going to want to hurt me. I will never give you cause.'

ALICE: 'You ton't know tis.'

FLETCHER: 'I do know it. I may be young, but I'm not stupid. I know what I'm doing. I'm following my heart. Even if a thousand men-of-war were to show up this very afternoon with a thousand brides for me to choose from, I wouldn't leave you: not for all the Englishwomen in the world. Who took care of the sprawlers with me? Who threw me Johnny Mills to save young Polly's life? You did. Do you remember that day when the wave nearly swept those infants away? Who saved their lives? We did. Tera-ura: "Sacred Dance." Mata Ohu. It's time we had children of our own. It's time for you to have a proper family. What say you? Will you marry me?'

GREY GOOSE: What heirloom?

MS. JACKSON: The one you stole.

GREY GOOSE: I didn't steal anything.

MS. JACKSON: Don't lie to me.

GREY GOOSE: I didn't.

LESBIAN: I did. I packed it away in my bag. I have two tickets for tonight's flight: one for me and one for you. Come. We'll explore the world as your ancestors did: the English and the Polynesians. They went from west to east; we'll go from east to west. We'll show the lost and the lovelorn what true devotion means. We'll scale Victory Peak in China. We'll sail the Punjab. We'll get lost in Gargas Cave. We'll bathe in the hot springs beneath Mount Hekla. We'll catch a Broadway show. We'll do some shopping at Shinjuku Station. We'll do anything your heart desires. All you have to do is liberate yourself. Let your passions run free. Someday we'll return to your native land. It won't ever be the same again. Nevermore will you be shamed. Woman, you'll have made the entire world yours.

MS. JACKSON: Nameless Pain! How am I to deny a penitent husband - newly birthed in remorse, in truth, in love, and desirous of similar gifts from me, his lawfully wedded wife, who, for so long, and with so many tears, kept watch over this heretofore seemingly endless and vain gestation - yet relish this sudden appearance of life: this infant curiosity: this foundling whose love demands more than my adoption could ever give? Oh, Homo: a thousand hearts couldn't beat as strongly as you have made mine beat. This is my home. I can no sooner leave it than change my body for that of a man. The world is yours; go out there and take it. Please leave me in peace. I beg you.

LESBIAN: I'll go. Though it pains me more than female circumcision, I'll go. I'll go because I love you.

Usage of Heart in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The therapy didn't just seem to cure headaches. It seemed to cure Steve O's anger as well. He realized it was high time he reconciled with his old friend. He sent him a letter. It included a heartfelt apology and an invitation to meet. Adam accepted. Steve O flew to L.A.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that doesn't take itself seriously, but what you make of it is up to you

My comrade and I descend. The man on the road is tired. He is looking up into the sky. He is wincing in pain. We get closer and closer. His mouth is agape. He is breathing us in. We penetrate his heart.

The shovel falls.

– from “Shovels Fall,” an interesting story about the cycle of violence throughout history

Miss Day announced more good news after the victory. She had gotten a job. As soon as she graduated she'd be teaching at the same community college they had competed with two years ago. With any luck, she'd be proctoring the next Olympiad.

Sir Lewis was heart-broken. He had never told Miss Day how he felt. Now she was leaving.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about the romantic struggle we all face

Grendel's mother came to take care of her. She took her to live with an ogre. The ogre scowled at Grendel. Her heart began to hurt. As if there was a rock in it. She realized it wasn't her heart. It was her breast. It hurt on both sides.

– from “Little Grendel's First Hair,” a fairy tale story about unpleasant things that unfortunately exist in real life

Steve O was unperturbed. With the heart of a knight he admitted defeat, moved on with the beer, and soon discovered the meaning of the term easy prey. Conquest followed beer-goggled conquest. It was precisely in the middle of such a beer-fueled feast that Steve O had his first experience with the wrong end.

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
