Nose, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to weigh the feasibility of expanding his unimpressive Fiction Corpus with some really good stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the potential of administering English as an international standard. I don't have faith in the dullish fashion in which English is presented for study.Pointer

Improving one's intimacy with a language isn't like introducing a wider canal. A language isn't just an instrument that you can learn to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A common language can not be ripped from the prevailing culture of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A proper instructor must develop a plan for introducing it; the prudent pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written language of varying size and consistency. They may contain anything from a book about literature to some real mind control fiction. I lost many a sleepless night developing my "awe-inspiring" Fiction Corpus in order to form a special type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have deconstructed them, reformulating them - not merely to teach an American language but to defend the human soul, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you. But how to judge what we would want done to us if we've never been in somebody else's shoes? If we've never been abandoned by our mother, how do we treat somebody who has? Somebody who seems to constantly suffer the repurcussions of it? Margo and I had 46 days and 6,000 miles to try on each other's shoes. We had one car and one tent in which to hear each other's words. We learned to cooperate. We started learning how to listen.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Nose

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word nose in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word nose, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word nose is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Definition of NoseMargo on a trampoline

A nose is an artifact that helps guide mammals, some better than others, to the source of something. It can also be a fuel for anxiety when used to assess the relative aesthetic qualities of human faces. It can also refer to a kind of artifact related to this fuel.

Usage of Nose in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

On Mars, your father spent hours looking at that picture, especially when there was nothing else to do but wait. He would spend hours marveling at that tilt: such a very slight tilt, such a slight hint of motion that sent her chin up ever so slightly, making her face look solid but fluid, strong but gentle. It was very beautiful. She had a strong nose that was very long; it was followed by a small, but strong chin - strong points on a round and gentle face: your father spent hours analyzing it - the men always wondered what it was that he was contemplating.

Verse 154 from the chapter called Childhood

"The Lonely Planet," I said, "was a ghost wolf, with big, black eyes, a black nose, and blackness inside his ears. The rest of him was white and gray - except for his paws: those were black too - and inside his mouth, when he opened it, which wasn't very often, you could see his black tongue. Those were the parts that really existed: they were black because they were real - the rest of his body was like fog: if you tried to touch it, your hand would disappear inside - but, if you touched his nose, you would feel it, cold and wet on your fingertip. If you poked his eyes, you would feel the black jelly pushing your fingers back. If you stuck your finger inside his ear, you could stroke it; but the outside was like mist: if you tried to touch it, you would blow it away. Sometimes, when the wind blew really hard, you could see it blowing away his body."

Verse 157 from the chapter called Childhood

So we stopped at the warehouse where your father's uncle bought some clothes by the scale. He bought enough clothes to fill twenty trash bags. Throwing about five trash bags into the back seat, he was able to fit five more into the trunk. Getting into the car, we placed all the other trash bags between our legs, underneath them and on our laps, beside ourselves, behind our backs and our heads, on either side, piling them underneath our arms and above them, squeezing them into our crotches, filling the pits of our knees and arms, making stacks that came up to our noses and our asses. They were not comfortable. They were plastic bags. They were black: they absorbed the midday sun. They made us hot and sweaty. They stuck to our skin. These plastic trash bags full of clothing stuck to our skin. It was disgusting. They smelled. It was like being poached in oil with sweet and sour pepper. The clothes were spilling out. Somebody would wear this filthy shirt squeezing out of my crotch. It was disgusting. There were balls of nylon stocking squeezing themselves into my ass. When we turned into a back alley and stopped, I was grateful.

"Is this the store?" I asked.

Verses 175-176 from the chapter called Adolescence

The Commandant was white-haired, with big hands, an obtrusive lower lip, and a squashed nose. On his left hand, his index finger was missing. He was a real farmer, I thought.

Verse 286 from the chapter called Adolescence

But that would presuppose that Baron Cohen-Krupnik thought Jesus would become some kind of freedom fighter, which undoubtedly was the farthest thing from his Krupnik mind: that foolish business partner of his had betrayed him for cash, for the arms or something like that - Baron Cohen-Krupnik was no doubt the most confused man in Wroclaw that night, but no matter what he thought was going on, he was no doubt sure of himself, his capabilities, and the undisputable fact that he, Baron Cohen-Krupnik, was not one to be betrayed, especially not by some greedy, little snot-nosed kid - Baron Cohen-Krupnik was going to get it all back (or at least, most of it), in which case, there was no reason to call off his little 'mistake.' The real mistake was trusting Jesus's greed: Jesus's greed was not one to be trusted.

Verse 428 from the chapter called Arms

Usage of Nose in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

We stood there for a very long second, I pointing, my body huddled together by the recoil of the pounce, my head back, face stretched with the promise of amusement, eyebrows lifting, eyes wide, my mouth still in its open smile. We were very close, and despite the fact that he looked nothing like Luke, looked much better in fact, it took me surprisingly long to bring myself to awareness. In that very long second, I took in the sharp lines of the boy's face, the symmetrically modest nose, the tender growth of a few days' neglected shaving, and yes, in that sense he did resemble Macy, but I was not aware of that, nor of the implications, and only near the end of that very long second did I begin to realize I was absurdly positioned and in no way ready to explain my behavior.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 3, Ambushing a Man, Paragraph 2, Clauses 3-6

Then he put it back on the plate. This time he ignored the crumbs on his mouth. Holding the newspaper with his left hand, he placed his right elbow on the armrest, brought his hand to his nose, pushed up his falling glasses, and leaned back in his chair. Then he started reading again; I thought to myself, "What an old man: Nike looks just like an old man. If he were wrinkly and gray - except for those minor differences, he would look exactly the same. He would do the exact same things - in fact, he will do the same things. He will be Nike many years from now. He will be older and he will not look as young, but he will still be Nike.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 1, Cancer, Paragraph 5, Clauses 8-16

Perhaps a glare from the lights of the console: I couldn't see them from where I was, but, perhaps, owing to Nike's hunched-over position (which he would only relax when he was looking down his nose, at which point, he was leaning back in his chair - but only briefly, as then he would lean forward again), with his body thus contracted, the lights from the console may have been reflecting off his face, concentrating under his brow - but, I suppose, it may have been a reflection from the dashboard, angled as it was towards the driver, or maybe a combination thereof - regardless, there was a distinct glare on his face, and, hollowing out his features, he looked like the devil's minion, or, at least, someone trapped in hell: either a weary traveler misled, or a duty-bound man who was chafing against the fiber of his will.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 2, Clauses 5-6

Like streams of consciousness converging, former thoughts and current questions began flooding my mind. My heart was in danger. I took a deep breath and I held it in my chest, as if to reinforce the floodgates cradling my heart. I had to protect her from being overwhelmed by my sick and moiling stomach, or the storm clouds of my mind. I began a deep and steady breathing, calmly pumping away the feeling with my diaphragm, blowing out my nose, trying to dissipate my thoughts. But my thoughts - even without the weight of feeling welling up against me, pressuring my soul, churning my stomach - these thoughts were not dissolvable. They would not go away, and how could I let them infuse my heart? that fountain of dangerous feeling? that chemical dynamo that would send them shooting to my throat - give them voice! - no! that would send them bursting through my mouth in sentences of self-destructing rancor - an explosive solution, one which I would not allow to break my stony face.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 14, Feelings, Paragraph 2

It's interesting because I think that if Luka were to grow out his hair, he would probably look even better. Since it's curly and not too thick, a lot of hair would actually lighten the load off his face. It would also single out his nose: he already wears a beard, which, by the way, is also something that distinguishes him from Luke, who, sadly enough, is quite incapable of having one (of course, I mean sadly for his sake: I would never want to see him wearing one).

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 5, A Man's Features, Paragraph 3

Usage of Nose in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LESBIAN: I was in Goroka - in the highlands of New Guinea - in September, I believe - for the cultural show. There I saw the Mudmen.

MS. JACKSON: Who are the Mudmen?

LESBIAN: The Mudmen make these clay masks - some big, some small -all of them hideously grotesque with giant noses and sharp, pointy teeth.

MS. JACKSON: They dance around with these masks?

LESBIAN: With mud caked over their entire bodies: from neck to toe.

ALICE: Are they naked?

LESBIAN: Of course not: they're wearing masks. In Rabaul - on the island of New Britain - I saw the famous Baining fire dance. There they wear masks that are made from bamboo, which they cover with tapa, a kind of bark cloth. That makes these masks very light. Naturally, they're even bigger.

MS. JACKSON: How big?

LESBIAN: Humongous: thirty to forty feet.

ALICE: No way!

I thought about it. I realized how stupid I was. I should have know better. I felt charcoal crunching beneath me. It was disgusting. I huffed. I shouldn't have done that. Ash blew around me. I remember what she said. She was standing at the door. "Albert is always working," she murmured. "Nonstop: nothing but work, work, work. I'm afraid to leave my child alone with him. One time, he was supposed to be watching her. She jumped out of her crib. Can you believe it? She flipped. I found her on the floor. She was on her back. She was laughing, smiling, as if nothing had happened.
