Pocket, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's studying the potency of enhancing his colossal Fiction Corpus with a few success stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the possibility of harnessing English as an international language for the world. I don't believe in the formalistic modus operandi by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Enriching a person's artfulness with a language isn't like creating a safer match. A language isn't merely a tool that you can learn to use with a greater amount of precision. A shared tongue can't be fractured from the prevailing culture of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A good educator has to find a method of introducing it; the smartest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words based on a particular corpus, a body of written language of varying size and consistency. This corpus could contain anything from a book about literature to many books of fiction. I lost many a sleepless night forging my "lofty" Fiction Corpus to form a unique genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drafted a million words and I have reduced them, reformulating them - not merely to teach American vocabulary but to defend the human soul, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Help End Corporate Mismanagement With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On Monday, I arrived in Europe. By Wednesday I had bought a car. By Friday I had met the woman who a few months later would end up having travelling 6,000 miles across Europe with me.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you. But how to judge what we would want done to us if we've never been in somebody else's shoes? If we've never been abandoned by our mother, how do we treat somebody who has? Somebody who seems to constantly suffer the repurcussions of it? Margo and I had 46 days and 6,000 miles to try on each other's shoes. We had one car and one tent in which to hear each other's words. We learned to cooperate. We started learning how to listen.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Pocket

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word pocket in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word pocket, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word pocket is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Pocket in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"The bag must have fallen from his pocket," said your father.

Verse 599 from the chapter called Adolescence

"I brought sandwiches," I said. "Please have one." I removed two sandwiches from my jacket pocket. "Ham and cheese," I said.

"No, thanks. I don't eat meat."

Verses 791-792 from the chapter called Bohemia

"That was just a service fee - what are you talking about? I don't have that money; it's not in my pocket. I can't just give it to him."

Verse 158 from the chapter called Arms

Without license to buy more weapons, Jesus had to be very stingy. Not till he signed on with SECURITA did Jesus gain the privilege, thanks to that security firm's contract, of being able to buy whatever he wanted (which the firm even tried to subsidize, but Jesus, more often than not, paid from his own pocket, which prevented his so-called superiors from requisitioning his equipment). In fact, it was during his first few months of tenure with SECURITA that Jesus found Baron Cohen-Krupnik with bullets in his head. Through a fluke, he was the first one to arrive at the crime scene. The landlord who had rented Baron the apartment also happened to be an old friend of Stalin's. Jesus was able to take photographs, which he later used to convince your mother, Zoe Guderian, that her fiancé's family was not up to snuff, not that she ever thought they were (for various reasons), but, after seeing poor Baron with bulletholes in his head (someone she had once had the displeasure of socializing with), she was convinced, despite her better judgment, to continue her relationship with Sacha Cohen-Krupnik, just so she could spy for your father, which she did, with painstaking effort, going so far as to marry the bastard, which your father deeply regretted.

Verse 420 from the chapter called Arms

Jesus thought about that while he sat on his uncle's back doorstep: you never know what a stray bullet will do. Stalin had wanted more than pain and misery. Having failed in his quest for an officer's commission, which would've required a higher bribe than his pockets could afford, he had tried, unsuccessfully, to enlist in the Reserve Army, which only took the fittest, even for its rank and file.

Verse 31 from the chapter called Arms

Usage of Pocket in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Your presence in your words was comforting, and I confess that, until now, I have suffered from your absence, and I held myself, by all accounts, among the lonelier of men - and all despite my attractive company. But without you, Sister, I am like a cloud without a storm, like a steppe without a fire, like a stable without a horse: I am too open for these times; I am too vulnerable to be sitting in this hospital by myself. Luckily, there's this letter I'm writing; your letter I have too: I keep it in my breast pocket. I have underlined all the best parts, and the parts with which I disagree - but those are of little importance.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

"I'll call for help," she thought. She cupped her mouth. She realized she had a weapon. Her PDA was in her pocket. Tatum tried to remove her glove. It wouldn't budge. She twisted her wrist as hard as she could. The glove loosened.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story set on the dark side of the moon

What was she going to do? Tatum breathed heavily. She wanted to talk to Miss April. Her voice would calm her down. Uzumaki would help. Tatum stuffed her hand into her pocket. She wrenched out the PDA. She started to dial the number. She thought, "What will I say-that I was sleeping with a man?" She hung up. It would be safer to send text: there would be no questions. She could take a picture. Good idea, she thought. The flash illuminated the room.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a murder spree on the moon

Detective Morimoto's wife and daughter were lovely people. They asked him what he was doing in Japan. He tried to explain with his pocket dictionary that, "Over there," meaning America, "I was shown, by a mother, a beautiful woman whom I saw myself naked." They both giggled until they turned beet-red.

– from “A Cop Named Patsy,” a funny story featuring a cop who takes his work seriously but still like to joke around

Tatum found the card. She slipped it into her pocket. Putting on her breeches, she tried to turn on the light. It wouldn't work. She opened the door. The lamps in the corridor were dim. She realized power was on reserve. She checked her PDA. The clock said three hundred thirty hours of night left. She shook her head. This would never happen on the near side. Power stations on the peaks of eternal light guaranteed electricity.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a marginalized culture

"You don't know? Are you high? I told you to wait for me."

"I was chasing somebody."

"Don't tell me you got your pocket picked."

"Relax. It was a woman."

"A woman picked your pocket?"

"I wish."

"What do you mean?"

"I couldn't get any kind of action."

"Are you having an outbreak?"

"It's not like that."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: I lost my virginity to a married woman. Her husband was abroad - had been for several months. She did plan on joining him, but she loved sex - she admitted it - more than she loved her husband. Then again, I didn't really know the man. Maybe he was the same way. Maybe he was a scoundrel. Some women are just crazy. I was doing work on her balcony at the time. She would undress in front of me through the window. She even let me watch her masturbate. I was around eighteen years old. She was forty. I had no idea what to do. I couldn't do anything, anyway. I was surrounded by my crewmates. When we finished, we packed up and we left. I didn't see her for several weeks. In due course, we bumped into each other at one of the local pubs. She asked me how I was doing. I told her I was fine. I bought her a few drinks. She asked me to take her home. I did. On her front porch, as she was removing her keys from her pocket, she dropped something.

ALICE: A condom.

FLETCHER: How did you know?

ALICE: I guessed.

FLETCHER: Is that something you've done?

ALICE: I've never done it. I assume, if you want to get your point across, that's the most powerful way.

FLETCHER: It's true. I couldn't help myself. I had to go up to her room.

ALICE: Did you like it?

FLETCHER: I loved it - as it was happening. When we were finished, I felt as dirty as a pig. She wanted me to come every Wednesday afternoon like clockwork.

ALICE: Did you?

Censorship says everything...as should modern wall art

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
