Tent, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's ruminating on the viability of compounding his outsized Fiction Corpus with some very short stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the prospect of exercising English as everyone's second language. I do question the debilitating scheme by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Honing a person's intimacy with a language isn't like pioneering a more valuable coin. A language - a spoken language - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to use with a greater amount of precision. A spoken tongue cannot be parted from the shared logic of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. An informed educator must have a blueprint for introducing it; the prudent pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a particular corpus, a body of written works of varying size and consistency. They could include everything from a book about literature to some really bizarro fiction. I lost many a sleepless night laboring on my "monumental" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have investigated them, reshaping them - not just to teach English vocabulary but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to propel that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Tent

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word tent in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word tent, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word tent is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Tent in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

In such a scenario, it seems entirely possible that the first prey might have been some kind of larger mammal. If such was the case, then the first hunter, using a fractured rock, might have procured for himself yet another weapon: a large bone, or, if his prey happened to be a bovid, a horn. However, considering the prevalence of other, more established predators, it seems entirely likely that man's awareness of large bones and their potential as weapons was, to a large extent, contemporaneous with his knowledge and use of sticks and stones. This presents an interesting question.

Verse 3 from the chapter called Arms

These were only thoughts of momentary fascination. On the whole, Jesus pursued his work with interest. He did not test God. He applied himself and his men always with reason. When he entered St. Elizabeth's church all by himself in the middle of the night when there was no electricity around and killed the seven men hiding inside by stabbing their throats or otherwise, it was the most reasonable thing he could think of. When he sat on Sand Island waiting for Stalin or one of his other commanders to report, there wasn't anything else he could reasonably have done. He had already shown his men how to do it; now they had to go and do it: bravely - that's all. To the extent that they were unhindered by their own selfish desires, or the selfish desires of non-combatants, they were successful, and Jesus prosecuted his personal war against terrorism with admirable results.

Verse 6 from the chapter called Bohemia

It was strange not to be walking. The horses were good for mobility's sake, but, like the priests who spent their time talking into the microphones, or the ushers who pushed people into the side of the street, or the quartermasters who arranged special housing, or the drivers and baggage handlers who transported the tents, we were set apart from the crowds of pilgrims, and, instead of concentrating on the Lord and all his gifts - our happiness and peace inside His bosom! - we were forced to think about other things - in our case, security issues: infiltrations and possible weaknesses - and, instead of looking inside ourselves and reflecting on our sins, we were made to scan the countryside for potential terrorist activity.

Verse 262 from the chapter called Security

"I know," said Jesus. "You slept in a lopsided tent last night."

Verse 753 from the chapter called Security

Jesus was fully capable of outfitting a brigade, but, if he did that, then he couldn't afford to buy enough tickets for all of his men - at least, not enough to gain a reasonable weight ceiling. The Vatican wasn't going to be of much help; if Panzer-Tank had no intention of donating tickets, then the Church was only going to be able to afford a few hundred - not the thousands that Jesus would need. There had to be some kind of solution.

Verse 221 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Tent in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

And you don't have to know that your destiny was determined by this fact that we were controlled: because that doesn't matter.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 30, Presenting Oneself to a Potential Husband, Paragraph 4, Clauses 5-6

"There is a new order in the world," she said. "It is marked by freedom. Not rights - I don't mean freedom like liberty: that is something different. I mean power and opportunities. When we were young, our destinies were controlled by things bigger than us: by war, by systems; there were new technologies - these things were controlling the society, so even things like social movements were controlling us, the individuals - even though we didn't know it. And this was true for everybody: West, East, man, woman; these movements were migrations; they were political. It was different in the East: it was more obvious. It was harder. It was like living in suspension. But now: that world has reconciled itself: not only the systems, but the technologies. They are all there; they are all developed. They do not seem like they can really change things more than they have already changed them.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 30, Presenting Oneself to a Potential Husband, Paragraph 3

After Nike left us, we went back to Vinnie's. Before long, the auction started and Luke began reassuring Barbara that he would help jack up the price. I told him to stop being silly; we had only been kidding and if Luke actually started bidding he would only ruin the poor girl's reputation. Instead, I offered my own services: if the need should arrive, I would start a bidding war. Barbara loved the idea. "You'll make all the guys jealous!" she said, and she told me to do it anyway; but I had to laugh because I wasn't really serious when I said it. But before I could say that, something happened and Barbara's attention was taken away. I was left feeling obliged; Barbara's turn was coming up, and just as I was wondering what sort of impression I would make, our collusion was trumped by the two girls in front: they started making out.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 7, Dating a Woman with Dogs, Paragraph 3

At least I hope to have reminded you of the circumstances under which your relationship with the 'Romaniac' began. It has been a long relationship, but oftentimes quiet and distant, and only recently, I gather, have you had the opportunity to develop it seriously. But I never doubted that it would be provocative: everything about that woman is that way, whether it be innocent or not, and your confessions to me have only piqued an already heightened interest.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 1, Genital Pain as a Result of Physical Trauma, Paragraph 8, Clauses 7-10

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Junior admired golf. It took an amount of discipline he lacked in regard to women. He noticed similarities between the sports. In each case, though it was possible to play with teams, the goal remained essentially one of individual accomplishment. A man had to use his club to get the ball, or the contents of his ball, into the hole.

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring a bunch of horses

"My liaison with the Manga People, a certain Captain Hoopz, claims somebody, perhaps this so-called Admiral Flava Flav, is running an extortion racket. If this story were to break, the Hentai Manga League would face investigations. Our more zealous legislators would try to tamper with the leadership. The Federation would threaten to suspend the all-lunar series. The extent of the possible damage is vast. Imagine how many fewer customers your prostitutes would have."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story set in a future where people are still marginalized

Tae ran to his tent. He grabbed a spear he had fashioned in case of animal attack. He followed the bank. He encountered a forest. Roots stretched over the ground. Branches slapped him in the face. Tae was forced to slow down. He feared the worst. There was no telling how far Bo would go. "Stay alive," he kept repeating to himself. "I'm coming."

– from “How Tae & Bo Took Over the World and Kung & Fu Didn't,” an apocryphal bible story about waiting for the opportunity to strike

Indeed, Ferrari's persistence in pursuing the art of horseback riding was born more of innate pride than talent. Witnessing other, more skilled compatriots fall from their steeds, he laughed-not ostentatiously like Francesco, but quietly, as if it proved, not that they wore heavier armor and were therefore richer, but that they might not be as good.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring a frank discussion of youth and politics

"Please understand," she whispered. "Your mother and I care for you deeply. I'm sorry it had to come to this. I had to tell her." Junior was confused.

Sammy D brought him to see her. The kiss the women shared was something more than cordial. Junior couldn't believe his eyes.

"I've been informed," said Dorothea, "you have serious intentions to marry a black South African. Do you deny this?"

Junior squinted. He started shaking his head. He laughed. He said, "Are you having a homosexual love affair with a fetish club performer?"

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LUKE: (to ALICE)

I'll explain later.

MS. JACKSON: How dare you invade this house? You idiot! What were you trying to do? Rape my cook? Don't tell me she was expecting you. You weren't expecting him, were you?

KOKOMO: No.

MS. JACKSON: You were trying to seduce her. My God! With a sudden invasion of the sofa bed? Not even an imbecile would consider that an effective strategy. You've lost your wits completely, haven't you? Pathetic. If you're so desperate for sex, why don't you try buying some attention?

GREY GOOSE: I admit that there have been a few times in the past couple years when I thought my vow of fidelity to you had long since expired. There may even have been a few times when I looked after a nice bit of flesh. Despite that, I've never been unfaithful to you, Ms. Jackson, no matter what you might think. As for this, I won't deny what I was after - and have been after for too long now - which is, namely, to sleep in my own bed, whether or not your cook or your lover or anyone else is in it at the time - and that, my dear, is a matter of your own construction.

MS. JACKSON: You deserved to be expelled. Do you think I enjoyed getting looks in town? Complimenting my dress, were they? You promised me you had never fooled around and that you never would. Now I know every single word they ever uttered about you is true. How could you? After all we've been through? I loved you.

FLETCHER: Come on.

GREY GOOSE: Wait. I've got some more to say. I confess I earned somewhat of a reputation in my day - for reasons mostly beyond my control, like my virility and my instinctual desire to perform well.

FLETCHER: Don't screw it up.

– ACT II, lines 347-355

(MS. JACKSON exits.)

LESBIAN: I suppose there's no point in arguing.

FLETCHER: My mother can be very insistent.

LESBIAN: I've been thinking about what happened today. I want to apologize for what I said. I shouldn't have spoken at all. It wasn't my place to speak. I'm sorry.

FLETCHER: I accept.

LESBIAN: Thank you.

FLETCHER: I'm sorry as well.

LESBIAN: Alright.

FLETCHER: I'm sorry for interfering.

LESBIAN: Okay.

– ACT II, lines 284-292

MS. JACKSON: What about my heirloom?

GREY GOOSE: What heirloom?

MS. JACKSON: The one you stole.

GREY GOOSE: I didn't steal anything.

MS. JACKSON: Don't lie to me.

GREY GOOSE: I didn't.

LESBIAN: I did. I packed it away in my bag. I have two tickets for tonight's flight: one for me and one for you. Come. We'll explore the world as your ancestors did: the English and the Polynesians. They went from west to east; we'll go from east to west. We'll show the lost and the lovelorn what true devotion means. We'll scale Victory Peak in China. We'll sail the Punjab. We'll get lost in Gargas Cave. We'll bathe in the hot springs beneath Mount Hekla. We'll catch a Broadway show. We'll do some shopping at Shinjuku Station. We'll do anything your heart desires. All you have to do is liberate yourself. Let your passions run free. Someday we'll return to your native land. It won't ever be the same again. Nevermore will you be shamed. Woman, you'll have made the entire world yours.

MS. JACKSON: Nameless Pain! How am I to deny a penitent husband - newly birthed in remorse, in truth, in love, and desirous of similar gifts from me, his lawfully wedded wife, who, for so long, and with so many tears, kept watch over this heretofore seemingly endless and vain gestation - yet relish this sudden appearance of life: this infant curiosity: this foundling whose love demands more than my adoption could ever give? Oh, Homo: a thousand hearts couldn't beat as strongly as you have made mine beat. This is my home. I can no sooner leave it than change my body for that of a man. The world is yours; go out there and take it. Please leave me in peace. I beg you.

LESBIAN: I'll go. Though it pains me more than female circumcision, I'll go. I'll go because I love you.

– ACT II, lines 357-365

Usage of Tent in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The people are the ones who set me free. I don't care how you twist it. I didn't stir people up. My father didn't stir people up. He explained to them what happened. I did what I had to do. I wasn't about to be punished for something people just didn't understand. People didn't want to understand what happened. They've got more important things to worry about. But at least they listened. My father told them not to take his last child and they had mercy. For him. Not for me. They would've killed me.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on good intentions coming straight out of Roman mythology

What was I talking about? Oh yeah. We were holy. The triplets. We Orazio brothers. The Orazi. And the other guys. The Curiazi. We had a mission. To stop the war between our two governments. It was fate. It was what we had to do.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on good intentions coming straight out of Roman mythology

My father never lied to my mother about going up to see his old girlfriend. He lied to me. So I wouldn't say anything. So my mother could find out about it later. From the receipts. It was part of the grand scheme. To bring things to a head. To back up the toilet of their lives. To bring up the festering crap they had tucked away in their basement all these years. Like the accusation that my father had raped my mother. On some night twelve years ago. When she had said no. And he had done it anyway. I wanted to laugh but my wife was there. Her father raped her mother. Allegedly. My wife is convinced its true. Despite only having heard one side of it. If it were as bad as it sounds I doubt her parents would still be together. But they are. Like my parents. They've reconciled. For all intents and purposes they're a happily married couple. They hold hands in the street. While my wife wont sleep with me. Because on some rainy afternoon two years ago I told her I wanted to rape her.

– from “The Backed-Up Toilet,” a literature story based on something that happened, namely to the author

Orbitz arrived at the Houston space elevator. He took no bags through customs. Nobody questioned him. At the orbiting platform he bought a fancy skin suit. He chartered a shuttle to take him to his ship. Within an hour he saw the widowmaker stretching out towards the galactic pole. Forestays came into view. They glittered from the main mast in quick succesion like spectral strands. Stone tentacles emerged. From every direction they clustered into the humongous figurehead of the Nautilus Pompilius. Its one brooding eye kept careful watch above its gaping hyponome. Orbitz pulled the hood of his skin suit over his head. He affixed his breathing apparatus. He disembarked directly into space. With a single canister of propellant he reached the airlock nearest to the bridge. He climbed aboard.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written in honor of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

I wondered if she were right. Was it possible for there to be a difference between us? Were our generations so far apart? Were we not experiencing the same systems? Socialism, communism, capitalism, Christianity - were they not as powerful now as they ever were? Perhaps the influence was being overshadowed - by what? Our technologies were trite; our movements, nonexistent. What was my generation doing? Treading water? I took a puff of marijuana. It didn't matter. It was getting late.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's nerves depending on your outlook

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
