Army, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to study the thought of augmenting his mammoth Fiction Corpus with a treatise on wall art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the feasibility of harnessing English as humanity's second language. I don't trust in the lumbering manner in which the English language is taught.Pointer

Reinforcing a person's adroitness with a language isn't like introducing a stronger bit of iron. A language - a spoken language - is not just a tool that you can learn to employ with greater amounts of precision. A common tongue can not be uncoupled from the prevailing culture of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. An informed educator must develop a plan for introducing it; the discerning pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a particular corpus, a set of written works of various scope and consistency. A corpus might contain everything from a book about literature to a bunch of science fiction books. I burnt many candles creating my "petty" Fiction Corpus to form a peculiar class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have pieced together a million words and I have tabulated them, reframing them - not simply to teach the English tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to provoke that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Europe, the summer of 2011. Twelve countries. 46 days. One car. One tent. One man. One woman he's just met.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Army

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word army in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word army, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word army is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Army in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"Are these weapons for the Reserve Army or for us?" I asked.

Verse 112 from the chapter called Bohemia

Jesus's legitimacy might've immediately improved if he had told everyone how the resistance was being run: by using smuggled weapons destined for a Martian: with money robbed from a bank the night before the Polish army 'accidentally' blew it up. That would've been like shooting oneself in the foot to prove one's bravery. Jesus had to swear each and every Confederate to secrecy. No one could disclose the neighborhood, much less the exact location, from which the Confederacy had been armed. No one could mention duffel bags. The only person Jesus worried about was their Lieutenant, the only non-terrorist prisoner he ever held. When Jesus decided to hand over the body of the Martian, as a sign of good faith, to an independent international investigative commission, he decided to release the Lieutenant as well. By then, his mention of a bank robbery only served to confuse. No one had proof that the bank had ever been robbed. There had been a breakdown in communications: a clerical error: the azimuth had been mistranscribed. The army had been duly criticized - no one liked mentioning the bank, especially after a certain commissioner leaked out anonymously the information that similarly mistranscribed azimuths had appeared simultaneously in seemingly isolated locations. That really helped Jesus's cause.

Verse 426 from the chapter called Arms

"We get you out of the army," said Jesus.

"Why?"

We smiled, Stalin and I.

Verses 40-42 from the chapter called Security

The problem of finding out when the shipment occurred was, to a certain extent, easy enough. Of course, it was necessary to assume that the shipment took place not only during the terrorist insurgency in Germany, but also along the same route that regular Polish army shipments took, and that the vehicle used was a diesel truck. These were all safe assumptions, but they were assumptions nonetheless. The arms were from a factory in Brno - that was for sure: the serial numbers didn't lie - but whether or not the arms were first sent somewhere else before entering Poland was anybody's guess. During the terrorist insurgency, most borders had been closed. If anyone had been trying to smuggle 'misplaced' arms, the safest way would've been to disguise them as a regular army shipment. That was the premise on which Jesus's effort was based.

Verse 33 from the chapter called Security

The former U.S. Army colonel, as commander of an independent army unit within the Autonomous Mars-bound Outer-space Cooperative (AMOC), which, upon wresting control of the Martian orbit from Revolutionary (or whoever's) hands, would then organize the invasion of Mars, which, from the surface, would thence be controlled by LARC (Landed Anti-Revolutionary Command), was granted by Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third, chairman of AMOC's central planning committee, a permanent and veto-wielding seat in the Presidium, the war council of indeterminate size which, on the Martian surface, would exercise control over LARC, and which, with the LARC Secretariat, would form the backbone of it administration. Anyone in command of an independent army unit was eligible for a voting seat. Whether that seat were permanent or veto-wielding was symbolically dependent on the size of the army unit in question, but, in reality, the decision was entirely in the hands of Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third, who installed himself as Presidium chairman.

Usage of Army in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

ANDY: Yeah, that's right. But my heroes only form a small part of a larger army. They're the Polish contingent, and they're separate from everyone else: they have their own order, their own command structure, et cetera.

CHR: Why Polish?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 10, Bringing Up a Sore Subject, Paragraphs 40-41

NIKE: You see: that's exactly what I was talking about, Luka. It's too hard for a conservative to be an activist. Because you're the one who's stuck in the castle: you're the one hiding behind walls hoping they don't fall down. And the other guy's getting all the glory: he's the one calling for troops. He gets to be the loudest. And if you want to attack him, you have to leave the castle first. And how many are willing to do that? You know what happens out there? You become a reactionary: and that's a dirty business. You're a patrolling death squad is what you are, and there ain't no glory in that. And that's why people like Andre wish the army would just go away.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Tae had trouble concentrating on the argument. The man of average build was standing between two women. One was young. She had square shoulders. The other was middle-aged. Her breasts were enormous. She wore-like everybody else-a standard issue People's Liberation Army uniform. Her physique defied standards. The brown, woolen skirt mushroomed her belly. The top button of her white shirt was fastened; the bottom one, less so-the three in between had already popped.

– from “How Tae & Bo Took Over the World and Kung & Fu Didn't,” an apocryphal bible story featuring a bunch of Chinese convicts

Gog formed an army. Many of his men were more handy with a lasso than with a bow or a spear. Gog had to reassure himself they would be enough. As they lay arrayed about the dense forest, he said, "Sargon's son is in a mighty hurry to rule. His father faces certain death."

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man who smiles only when he's happy

"Is that the story you would have told the people of Kolkhis? My dear, you have no understanding of politics or public opinion."

"As in your brilliant decision to disband our army?"

"Don't start with me. Do you want me to leave you behind?"

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man who can satisfy a warrior woman

Gog laughed. "I have an army."

"If that's what it pleases Your Lordship to call it."

"It's too bad the women of Sargon's harem only taught you to use a sharpened tongue. If I weren't afraid you would cut off your toes with it, I might give you a real sword."

Enkidu replied, "A quick wit is the greatest of weapons."

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a sharp sword

Tae unbuttoned his standard-issue Liberation Army shirt. He threw it into the fire. He unzipped his standard-issue Liberation Army pants. He showed them the same courtesy. His standard-issue underwear fared no better. Standing naked, he smiled. What a liberating impulse, he thought to himself. He turned away. He lay quietly in the sand.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
