Body, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is weighing the concept of expanding his petty Fiction Corpus with a coffee table book about cheap framed art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the potential of implementing English as a common language for the world. I do doubt the regular steps through which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Perfecting one's expertness with a language isn't like creating a warmer piece of cloth. A language - a living tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A spoken language can not be disunited from the philosophical currents of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A proper instructor has to have a strategy for introducing it; the insightful pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written language of various size and consistency. Such a corpus can include anything from a book about literature to some real sci fi. I burned many candles forging my "impressive" Fiction Corpus in order to form a special kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have inspected them, reshaping them - not merely to teach a language but to describe the human spirit, and to goad that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Body

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word body in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word body, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word body is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Body in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

In the first grade, I told Jesus to give himself a middle initial like everybody else. That way, there would be no embarrassing questions. He did it. Then, everyone began saying where he or she was born: specifically, which hospital. I told Jesus to say 'Bethesda' like everybody else, but he said no: he didn't want to lie: that would be bad. When the teacher asked him, "In which hospital were you born, Jesus?" He said, "Poland."

Verse 102 from the chapter called Childhood

You don't understand - but you will understand, my child. Your father is far away, but he is close. He is with your mother in space. They are far away. They orbit the sun around Pluto. Their bodies are machines that never break. Their bodies are machines! Their heads have been transplanted! But their thoughts are with you: they are with you. They love you. God loves you. Zeus does not. He is terrible. Do not trust him. He took your mother's head. He destroyed your father's body! AAAAAAHHHH!!! Sometimes my mind spits bile: pure vomit. It feels like

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Most of the situations do not stimulate the feeling in a way that singles out one aspect from the others, and consequently, it is not really reminding me of anything specific. Nor is the feeling necessarily dependent on visual perception. The stimulation is usually visual, but only because I am usually looking at what is going on around me. I suspect that bodily presence has more to do with it. The mere proximity of another living body is enough to stimulate my own organism, and even if I were blind and deaf or totally insensible, I think I would still find myself being stimulated. My organism would sense the other by itself, independent of my nervous system, and I would still feel that body of mine crying out to the other. Is that not a strange feeling?

Upstairs, on the other hand, was no laughing matter. There was a small crowd of gentlemen surrounding the door to the ladies' room. It was locked, and poor Christie was locked inside. I asked what the big problem was, and somebody told me the lock was jammed. I couldn't restrain myself: "Doesn't get much use, does it? Don't worry Christie, we'll get you out of here. These gentlemen aren't trying to kidnap you. She's a British subject, you know: that's why she hasn't kicked down your door - that's the way we do it in America."

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 7

We were driving up the Allée du Bord de l'Eau, having turned, I presume, from Anatole Boulevard. Perhaps Nike was looking across the river at something - I don't know. At any rate, it was nighttime and very dark - there was no moon - and yet, I could see Nike's face very clearly. Perhaps a glare from the lights of the console: I couldn't see them from where I was, but, perhaps, owing to Nike's hunched-over position (which he would only relax when he was looking down his nose, at which point, he was leaning back in his chair - but only briefly, as then he would lean forward again), with his body thus contracted, the lights from the console may have been reflecting off his face, concentrating under his brow - but, I suppose, it may have been a reflection from the dashboard, angled as it was towards the driver, or maybe a combination thereof - regardless, there was a distinct glare on his face, and, hollowing out his features, he looked like the devil's minion, or, at least, someone trapped in hell: either a weary traveler misled, or a duty-bound man who was chafing against the fiber of his will.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 2, Clauses 1-4

Oh my dear sister: if you are reading this, you already know under what circumstances this document must be written. I know that I will have called you, and you will most certainly have asked me what I've been doing, and I will undoubtedly have told you by the time you receive this letter that Albert is dying - but I have not yet told you, though I feel as if I were talking to you right now, and I must explain everything to you as if you were this paper, as if it were part of your body, the excess of your skin, temporarily grafted onto this cheap writing surface so that my pen, the natural extension of my steady hand, could make its furtive inscriptions, gently massaging your senses, while I prepare to hurt you, to harm your gentle skin, to break your heart by incising the horrible truth of my situation.

The woman swallowed. "How do you do?"

"My name is Luka. I'm from Romania." The woman pulled her cloak tightly across her body. Luka glanced at Nike. He looked back at the woman. He said, "I will be your driver."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: There is a house on Norfolk that no longer stands. Its eaves of pine were reduced to ash. Its worthy frame that I helped build collapsed in a huge fury of smoke and fire that I helped start. I watched it burning from the top of Mount Pitt. I was too ashamed to go any closer. I was there in the room the night my father planned that terrible justice with his friends. I heard them goading each other into teaching their fellow man not to cooperate with the Australian government. It was madness I heard from their lips. They were the drunken lips of dogs waiting to pounce. I said nothing. I did nothing to stop them. When the police came, I lied and said I knew nothing. I climbed Mount Pitt out of morbid curiosity to see what I had wrought. That image of the house whose beams I placed - whose trusses I tied - in the distance - engulfed in flames - is seared upon my mind. I did nothing to stop it. Do you know how sorry I am? If I told you that somebody died in that fire, would it be in your power to forgive me?

– ACT II, line 183

FLETCHER: You would, would you?

LESBIAN: Yes.

MS. JACKSON: Fletch.

FLETCHER: You can have it.

MS. JACKSON: Your father-

FLETCHER: I'm sick and tired of it.

MS. JACKSON: Your father is in there-

FLETCHER: Everybody doing everybody else left and right-

MS. JACKSON: Your father is in there doing-

FLETCHER: Everybody talking about it!

– ACT I, lines 1003-1012

LESBIAN: It's a tiny bug that invades trees and makes them grow abnormal clumps of tissue. It doesn't have to be a tree. I remember my mother's rose-hedge suffering from gall. I had absolutely no idea what it was. I thought it was some kind of strange flower. It started growing these round, fluffy balls of blood-red fiber. I thought it was gorgeous. It has its own name - a beautiful one. It's known as Robin's pincushion.

MS. JACKSON: Oh, Heavens! My pincushion: it's still missing. I'm sorry, Homo. I didn't mean to interrupt.

LESBIAN: It's not a problem.

MS. JACKSON: I don't understand. Who could've taken it?

LESBIAN: Somebody close to you.

MS. JACKSON: Who?

LESBIAN: More importantly, why?

MS. JACKSON: It's only a pincushion.

LESBIAN: I thought it was more than that.

MS. JACKSON: To my family - not to anybody else.

– ACT I, lines 505-514

LUKE: No kidding.

FLETCHER: She's made forty-seven thousand dollars.

LUKE: Already?

FLETCHER: It's been quite some time. She left Fiji a few years back because of a bad situation. She's still trying to reach her mark. Much to my mother's consternation, neither charity nor her wages count towards her commitment. She hasn't been seeing many clients recently. I assume she's waiting for that special somebody who's prepared to put her out of business. Unfortunately, few people are willing to pay three thousand dollars for sex.

LUKE: She wouldn't do it for less, would she?

FLETCHER: It's not a profession to her anymore; it's a punishment: a debt of honor for losing her child.

LUKE: You can't bargain with that.

FLETCHER: You could be the last one. You could put an end to this misery. She deserves somebody who can appreciate what he's doing.

LUKE: Three thousand dollars is a lot of money.

FLETCHER: The peace of mind it brings is priceless.

– ACT I, lines 771-780

(KOKOMO enters.)

KOKOMO: Somebody's got to help me clean up in there. It's a mess.

GREY GOOSE: I'm coming - if it's alright with Ms. Jackson.

MS. JACKSON: Fine.

FLETCHER: I'm going down to the valve. Let me know when you're ready.

Usage of Body in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The day was bright when I left Moscow. I was in such a cheerful mood I had to stop myself from smiling. People were always telling me always to smile. People who never smile themselves. As if there's nothing wrong with a black man who's smiling. A black man who's always smiling looks like a fool like anybody else. I was foolish enough just doing what I was doing. I had to keep my face quiet. The entire bus ride I stared at my reflection in the window. I wanted to look confident without seeming too proud.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes life as we know it, though hopefully it can change

"I don't know," said John. "Maybe anybody. I wrote him a letter before we got married. I told him things. People I had made love to. Not everybody. Not that last guy. That was after the wedding. He found out I cheated on him. Proctor, I'm sorry. I couldn't help it."

"Am I on the list?" asked Proctor. He dug his arm into John's throat. "Am I in that letter?"

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a life model put in a weird position

In the morning Elizabeth was gone before her husband came down for breakfast. He wondered if she went to the gym like she claimed. He had no idea. A reminder of how sad things had gotten. Like the soggy cereal he could no longer eat. The phone buzzed. It was his partner. Another body was found.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a cop put in a weird position

Orbitz drove to Austin. He dropped off the box at a mechanic's shop. The man in the office assured him smuggling the creature would be no problem. It might be done by the end of the day. Orbitz took exception to that. He took out the cauterizing agent. He told the man if the poison gland isn't cauterized every day somebody would come to cauterize him. The man quietly nodded.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written with Stanislaw Lem in mind, if you know who that is

"Maybe it's a copycat," suggested Bob. "Vic number two's been all over the news. Maybe somebody thought they could pull a fast one."

Proctor said, "There's a man on my list who lives not two blocks from here. I'm going to check it out."
