Company, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's deliberating on the concept of enlarging his resplendent Fiction Corpus with an essay on free art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the idea of upholding English as an international language for the world. I don't think highly of the prosaic strategy by which English is taught.Pointer

Refining one's artfulness with a language isn't like producing a hotter kiln. A language - a common tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to employ with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue can't be disjoined from the philosophical currents of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. An informed educator must have a strategy for introducing it; the smartest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a specific corpus, a body of writing of varying scope and consistency. This corpus might include everything from a book about literature to a bunch of fantasy fiction. I burnt many candles forging my "ordinary" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have assembled a million words and I have classified them, reshaping them - not just to teach American vocabulary but to describe the human spirit, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I had grown up in America. Land of opportunity. I came of age in the booming 90s when everything was possible. She had grown up in Poland. She had come of age at a time when the Soviets were making sure that there wasn't even anything to eat in the country. I couldn't even properly translate the word "opportunity" into Polish.

I've never been married. I've never been divorced. I've never had kids. I've never lost my kids. That doesn't mean I can't try to understand somebody who has. By listening to Margo during our trip across Europe I started to consider her needs as if they were my own. I may not have been in a position to satisfy all of those needs, but I was able to shut up and put my own needs aside if I had to for at least 6,000 miles. We all need to be listened to and it is the one need that we all have a duty to satisfy. When somebody prays to another human, as a human you have a duty to listen. Humanity needs to start teaching itself that skill.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Company

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word company in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word company, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word company is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Company in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

The MTA stationed itself around Olympus Mons and around every major point on the irrigation system, which, after decades upon decades of eager development, became vast and unknowable to men, penetrating far-flung regions with massive amounts of pressure, complicated systems and safeguards, gauges, unseen aqueducts forming strange and multifarious designs - mostly thanks to geography, of course, but also thanks to economics and evolving technology, which insisted on placing new pipes next to old ones, better pumps next to broken ones, and whole new branches of irrigation in previously undeveloped areas wherever greenhouses popped up, according to the most recent wind patterns, leaving old branches completely abandoned wherever dust had made growing unfavorable - but whose first and greatest branch went straight down (in order to beat the Southern Ice Cap Company into submission) to the southern hemisphere, to the Hellas basin, where, being the lowest point on Mars, the first permanent settlements were made (in the dubious hope that the elevation and increased pressure would somehow prove useful to Martian civilization) which, in turn, came to coalesce and grow into the modern urban giant called Centropolis.

Verse 9 from the chapter called Childhood

Now, if Stalin hadn't kept Jesus's father's body waiting for burial, maybe things might have played out differently, but, as it was, as soon as Jesus was released from his temporary cell, Stalin informed him that the ceremony was ready to proceed at any moment. So Jesus said, "Let's do it now." My sister was also waiting for burial, so, straight from the courthouse, we walked down Park Lane, turned right onto Peace Defenders' Road, turned left onto Soldiers' of September Street, turned left again (onto the road that led west out of town), then turned left again at Industrial Road, turned right onto Peaceful Road, and, at the Communal Cemetery (the other cemetery in town - "because this one has room for crypts," said Stalin), the burial took place - all in the company of tens and tens of reporters, photographers, and video cameramen. After that, they left, and Jesus disappeared from public sight - not a moment too soon.

Verse 200 from the chapter called Security

"God knew His servant was remiss: in granting my wish - my request for a sibling! - He knew I could only pay Him with ingratitude. He sends me a sister and I send her back! What wretched curse behooves my soul? Must I have chosen such a destiny? What fate conspires with wolves and dogs to make me find your broken neck? O wretched curiosity! (whose boon for Man far outstrips its bane!) Why sniff? So many things can be poison! What sensations must have twirled around your virgin head! They drove you to the open window - for air, no doubt (even though its unadulterated nourishment has long been lacking). What confusion must have taxed your noble mind, which only hours before had entertained simple thoughts of worship. 'Holy Mary! Mother of God!' you had said. 'Pray for us sinners: now and at the hour of our death.' She was waiting for you, child! You are with her now in heaven: with our Holy Mother Mary! God bless you, child! You are the instrument of my reformation! The lamb of my destiny! Tell your heavenly hosts that I remember: I have taken to heart - I understand this cryptic reminder of theirs. For too long have I lived in the company of dogs and wolves without lifting a finger in the face of their lies and confabulations. When I asked for you, beloved sister, I was devoted to the truth. We had sung the true words: this land is your land, we had sung. This land is my land. Fate will have to find all those wolves and dogs who conspired against you, child. My punishment has already been paid. There is no greater penalty for a lonely shepherd than his one and only lamb. But when your enemies meet their ends, beloved child, they will not have met a lonely shepherd, but an angry shepherd in wolf's clothing.

Verse 608 from the chapter called Adolescence

IT IS INFORMED ACCORDING TO ARTICLE 61 STATUTE 4 OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE CODE THAT, BY THE REQUEST OF THE SOCIAL BUILDING ASSOCIATION 'EURO' LIMITED-LIABILITY COMPANY, REPRESENTED BY ITS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, MR. SIGMUND BARTKOWSKI, PROCEDURE HAS BEEN INITIATED IN THE MATTER OF CONFERRING A DECISION CONCERNING THE BUILDING CONDITIONS FOR THE INVESTMENT CONSISTING OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF A FOUR-STORY ABOVEGROUND RESIDENTIAL-SERVICE COLLECTIVE IN A QUARTERLY ARRANGEMENT, THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN UNDERGROUND OR GROUND-LEVEL GARAGE, AND THE NECESSARY TECHNICAL INFRASTRUCTURE. THE PLANNED INVESTMENT IS LOCATED ON LOTS NUMBER 16,17,18,19/6,19/7, PART OF LOT 19/10 AM-15 IN TREBNITZ AT THE INTERSECTION OF - right behind Jesus's building, where the brick wall joined with the concrete wall: where the people urinated!

Verse 81 from the chapter called Bohemia

Meanwhile, as the battle escalated into the night, a small company of brave terrorists escaped by jumping from the windows of buildings. They were headed south and reappeared a few kilometers later at Kummersdorf, where Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third, your grandfather, owned and operated a spaceport. It was called 'Panzer-Tank Spaceport at Kummersdorf' - your grandfather had many spaceports, one of which was at Kummersdorf. The terrorists took over the spaceport and held it for two days. When it was recaptured by Panzer-Tank's own security forces (the Panzer-Tank Spaceport Police) they discovered that the terrorists had been preparing for a launch - in fact, the launch vehicle was moments away from lift-off when the control room was seized. People were fascinated by this news.

Usage of Company in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Macy and I did not see each other till the new year, establishing a regrettable pattern of intensely brief encounters followed by lengthy separation - separation very rarely experienced in terms of geographic distance. When we next saw each other it was after the start of term, and we had each fallen into our respective schedules. But because of our mutual friend Nike, we were often able to see each another - in virtually the same kind of company we had kept in Austria, with the difference of course being that Nike, although highly entertaining, was not a woman, and this changes a dynamic considerably.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 5, Falling in Love, Paragraph 1

There followed a few introductions, mostly students (girls) that Nike had befriended; there were old faces, but only a few of them. As I expected, in the company of strangers, Macy and I greeted as old friends. He went to get us some drinks, and in the meantime Nike and I exchanged news and other pleasantries.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 8, Partying with Intellectuals, Paragraph 2, Clauses 1-3

And Nike had to leave us early - what a tease! I'm sure you've spoken with him since that day - it was a while ago - and he's probably told you all about his company and moving to France, etc. It's a wonderful idea, but, unfortunately, so far it's only cost me: if Nike hadn't left me that night (to make some stupid arrangements for his departure), I would never have gotten into that bloody mess of an auction. Nike would've paid any price, because he is a gentleman - and Luke is only a hairy wart, besides being a cheapskate. Do you know what he did? Let me tell you.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 7, Dating a Woman with Dogs, Paragraph 2, Clauses 8-12

Now Nike happened to be serving plantains at the party, and I soon realized I had provided him an excellent opportunity of fleshing out the difference. I recalled having asked him to explain this difference once before, and in the wrong company too, by which I mean I had to sit through a prolonged and tiring discussion on whether plantains were a subspecies of the common banana or vice versa.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 8, Partying with Intellectuals, Paragraph 5, Clauses 1-2

But even if that were true - and I suspect it is - luckily for everyone, it doesn't necessarily make Luka a stooge - at least not in the sense that we enjoy when we are in the States and 'blessed' with Luke's company. Let's not beat around the bush: Luke is a total stooge. But if Luka is being somehow manipulated by his cousin-in-law, Nike, and this partnership doesn't prove as equitable as he might expect, it will only prove Luka half a stooge. As long as he's capable of insulting Nike to his face, and of doing it effectively, he'll never be a total stooge.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 5, A Man's Features, Paragraph 1

No longer did Junior have the stamina to do these things himself. He needed the help of his new company pilot, Purse Prescott. He was always fresh. Junior knit his eyebrows. "No," he said. "You don't understand. She's evil. She's convinced I'm planning to ask you to marry me. She'll stop at nothing to prevent it. She threatened to sabotage the company-my livelihood. I asked for mercy. She offered to make a bet. I could have my way if Clutch Bag were to win the Belmont Stakes."

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story set in New York

Junior's days turned dark. From his empty corner office, he often sat and stared as Nyota talked in the distance with Ann Taylor or Randy Fitzwater, discussing no doubt particulate levels in the base or the market potential of whatever it was the company made. Sometimes she would look up and catch Junior staring at her. A smile would start to creep across her face as she slowly turned to look back down at the paperwork. Junior was left to wonder if she were somehow missing the despondency he was sure was etched across his face, or if she were misinterpreting it as a simple matter of desire.

The ship exploded. As Orbitz hurtled towards the tesseract he realized why he was doomed. The radiation from the explosion was travelling with him. It would accompany him all the way back in time. The small amount that had sterilized Heather Mills would be enough over the course of the journey to kill him. He also realized how he had lost Sara Lee. In his moment of gloating behind Heather Mills's back he had given her a chance to read his mind. She knew she was sterilized. She knew infecting Sara Lee would be futile. She did it anyway out of spite. She did everything she could to alienate her. It was justice. Orbitz had robbed Heather Mills of her only love. She would make him pay the same price.

I opened the school the next day. There were birds nesting in the furnace. I thought it was a good sign. I left them there for the sake of the students. I asked the headman if the villagers knew I had come. He said he would take care of it.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
