Concern, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's meditating on the thought of reinforcing his majestic Fiction Corpus with a story about finding fiction online; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the potency of promulgating English as a universal standard. I do doubt the unnewsworthy manner in which the English language is taught.Pointer

Perfecting one's mastery of a language isn't like bringing about a larger dome. A language - a common tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A living language can not be unlinked from the professed knowledge of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make pupils recite English is to cheat them out of its cultural context. A proper instructor must find a method of introducing it; the wisest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying size and consistency. Such a corpus can include anything from a book about literature to numerous adult fiction books. I suffered many a sleepless night creating my "sensational" Fiction Corpus to form a special genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have sculpted a million words and I have deconstructed them, reformulating them - not just to teach the English tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

I've never been married. I've never been divorced. I've never had kids. I've never lost my kids. That doesn't mean I can't try to understand somebody who has. By listening to Margo during our trip across Europe I started to consider her needs as if they were my own. I may not have been in a position to satisfy all of those needs, but I was able to shut up and put my own needs aside if I had to for at least 6,000 miles. We all need to be listened to and it is the one need that we all have a duty to satisfy. When somebody prays to another human, as a human you have a duty to listen. Humanity needs to start teaching itself that skill.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Concern

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word concern in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word concern, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word concern is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Concern in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

And so it was that Jesus was made to pursue two disparate things at once: your mother's love and Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's head. Zoe's trust in your father was essential to both goals and Jesus took pains to nurture it. His own trust in Zoe was strong, but, nevertheless, plagued by doubts and anger inspired by Zoe's incomplete control over her feelings. Jesus never revealed to her either of his two goals during this process, but, then again, your mother never mentioned the word 'love' either, nor did she ever inquire as to Jesus's intentions concerning the Krupniks. If she had asked, 'Do you love me?' or 'Do you intend to kill Leonard Cohen-Krupnik?' Jesus would've had to say 'Yes' and 'Yes.' He was not afraid of being honest. However, since your mother was afraid, or too naïve, or too oblivious, or, most probably of all, too sensitive to ask either of those two questions, Jesus felt justified in his actions. After all, Zoe agreed to unscrew the vent in Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's bathroom. What did she think I was going to do? Take a shower?

Verse 1121 from the chapter called Security

Jesus's father didn't care. Your grandfather's fifteen minutes of infamy were long gone; only the dark memory of his gross negligence must have occasionally crossed his mind. What sort of grief plagued him? Was he sorry for killing his wife? or was he sorry that his wife had to die? What was he concerned about? Was he concerned about himself? Was he worried about his own moral integrity? Did he wonder why? Why did he do it? Was it worth it? The sacrifice? Was he conscious of the world's ingratitude? Or did he merely miss her? Did he merely miss his wife? Was it possible that he loved her? What was he thinking? Did he want to become like her? Was that his penance? To lie in bed? choking his veins with heroin? To sell his books for heroin? To lie in sleepfulness and regret? letting everything fall apart? waiting for death? To forget? What was he trying to do? Nothing? Was he that tired? like his wife had been? Had he nothing left to live for? Didn't he care about his son? Did he feel that helpless? Finished? What made him disintegrate? What strange force robbed him of his will to life?

Verse 65 from the chapter called Adolescence

These things didn't really concern Jesus; they were perceptions that reflected people's insecurities. Jesus had his own problems: that fateful night, while loading arms from his uncle's back room, Baron Cohen-Krupnik showed up in his electric truck. Efforts to capture him were complicated by Jesus's desire to capture this valuable asset (the truck), which he did (intact), but only after having Stalin chase it halfway around Center City (on foot), by which point, although the battery was dead and the truck's driver was forced to proceed on foot, Stalin's own battery was well out of range: he was so tired, he could barely lift his gun. Ironically, the Krupnik disappeared around St. Jesus's Church.

Verse 418 from the chapter called Arms

That room was his mother's childhood room. In it, among other things, he found a calotype of his mother taken when she was a young woman. It was uncolored - unblemished, as far as Jesus was concerned - and beautiful. His mother was beautiful, but this three-quarter, shoulder-length portrait of her did her beauty justice. It was small - pocket-sized - and Jesus kept one with him always. There were several copies, and Jesus left one at his mother's grave before we left for Mars. The rest he took with him, just in case he lost one in battle. It was very beautiful, that portrait. His mother's neck was turned to the right and slightly tilted. Her shoulders weren't straight: they were slightly stooped as if trying to fit between the sides of the picture - they barely made it. Her blond hair was shoulder-length and tucked behind her left ear; it was very large and prominent, but a very beautiful ear nonetheless. In general, the pose was quite spontaneous, which was remarkable for a calotype, since it required a whole minute of exposure.

Verse 153 from the chapter called Childhood

By the time your father found the Internet, there were terrorists in Wroclaw. They were fighting elements of the 2nd Infantry Brigade and Silesian Air Squadron. The search engine's homepage was full of interesting information about terrorism: like, for instance, where to go in case of injury from terrorist attack, how to protect yourself and your beloved family from poison gas, what to do in case a terrorist comes crashing into your apartment, et cetera, et cetera. The only thing it didn't tell you is where the terrorists were - obviously, such information would be redundant if a terrorist were already crashing into your apartment, but if that terrorist were crashing into your neighbor's apartment, it might be helpful to know that. As it was, there was nothing: no information concerning the terrorists' whereabouts. They were in Wroclaw: that's all you needed to know. According to Lucius, we had already known that; we had let them in ourselves. In the end, it was all the same: after all, terrorists were everywhere.

Verse 744 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of Concern in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

There was no crisis to focus her, nothing to concentrate her diffusive awareness, no menacing problems to solve, real or imagined. And suffering this deficiency, she was a prisoner of her own manic interest, which only gives her temporary fixations, like her concern for my lack of music, which lasted long enough for her to alleviate my problem, but which was not strong enough to bring Indiana out from her social stupor: she was able to remain blissfully unaware of my extra labor: the share of work that she was unconsciously neglecting. But that only meant that everything was normal. There was no undue stress on the poor woman, and I was grateful.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 33, Analyzing Social Encounters, Paragraph 4

ANDY: I hope it won't be that hard to understand once you're reading it. I worry that I'm going to take things for granted. I feel like - right now - I'm thinking about things philosophically - for myself - so I know what I'm doing - but, in a way that won't be there on the page, and I'm afraid that people won't get it. I don't know. It's all meaningless. I say it's about the present, but that's only because it concerns our future. You know? Where are we going? et cetera. So it only makes sense that the book takes place in the future.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 10, Bringing Up a Sore Subject, Paragraph 28

As far as I'm concerned, you're about as appealing to me as the men I keep encountering in locker rooms - both here and stateside. They think they can just stroke themselves with impunity, walking around with hard-ons, looking at me like they're going to lose their minds. Do you know how many times I've been ogled? I give them no reason for it. The only possible reason is that I'm walking around naked in a men's locker room. And they think that gives them an excuse to come on to me. Those people have no shame, Macy: they have no shame whatsoever. And what am I supposed to do about it? Not shower? If only we could have a cubicle for every gay man who can't control himself.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 5, Surrendering the Debate, Paragraph 6, Clauses 10-17

The truth is: I was there in the same way that I've always been there. It was my dream - of course I was there. I just wasn't aware of myself because the dream did not concern me, and the action was too oppressive to allow for self-reflection. After all, I was seeing everything. I just wasn't thinking about myself being there. Except at one point, when I saw things from Nike's perspective. But then, I didn't feel myself being me, I felt like I was being Nike, which is something completely different.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 4, The Fourth Day, Part 1, Our Constitution & Constitutional Reform, Section 1, Losing Oneself, Paragraph 5

I was the first to hear about it, but I can't say I followed all the news concerning its development. Obviously I know that the surgery was successful, and was executed with minimal side effects. But apart from that, I know very little, and it seems to me there was a lot more going on around that time. For instance, I do believe that was when your efforts to obtain employment, and the efforts of Indiana's husband, for a moment strangely coincided, and you received your curious invitation to work. Albert was in London - I don't remember which trip it was, nor do I recall exactly when the whole episode took place. Why would I have remembered such a thing? The whole affair was so bothersome to me; there was no reason for me to remember anything: I chose to forget.

Gog was directed toward the mountains of the north-east. "Once you reach the plain, you will see it. The peak is sharp; the face, smooth. Beware of Azi Dahaka, the dragon that was chained there by Keresaspa. You will see his breath rising from the summit. Do not pass the chasms carelessly. He will snap at your heels."

Gog thanked them for their concern. He assured them he had already killed one serpent daughter of Gandaruba. "If Azi Dahaka has sons," said Gog, "I will arrange a meeting for them with Skin Smoother."

The detective explained that he was investigating a series of suspicious deaths from high-rise buildings in the Tokyo area. Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

(LESBIAN enters.)

LESBIAN: Do you need my help?

GREY GOOSE: Stay out of this, Kiwi. It doesn't concern you.

MS. JACKSON: It does. My guests live here, too. They have a right to know. He's threatening to burn down this house.

FLETCHER: Settle down, Mother.

GREY GOOSE: That's what you think I said.

MS. JACKSON: You didn't have to say it.

GREY GOOSE: You've got a wild imagination, woman.

LESBIAN: If only.

MS. JACKSON: What's that supposed to mean? Whose side are you on?

– ACT I, lines 336-344

ALICE: Did somebody die?

FLETCHER: Don't ask.

ALICE: Yes.

FLETCHER: Even if your husband had died?

ALICE: It would.

FLETCHER: I've been wanting to confess this for so long. The island makes it hard. Who would have understood me if I had spoken? My mother? I pay my penance every time I hear her cry. She has no idea what part I played in that fire. I can't help feeling that, if I had stopped it, this family would never have had the problems it's had. Nobody died in that fire except for me. It was my own soul burning. As far as the house is concerned, restitution's been made. As for me, who would not find my weakness and ignore it? for the sake of convenience if not for shame. Who would restore my strength from the ashes?

ALICE: Let it be me. I will restore you.

FLETCHER: This is why I've been pursuing you. I knew you'd never give in to me. I saw your strength the moment you arrived: its grace: its beauty. I fell in love with it. I desired it - not for myself, but for its ability to release me from this guilt.

ALICE: Let me release you, Fletcher Christian. I will make you whole again.

FLETCHER: You will forgive me my crime?

– ACT II, lines 184-193

FLETCHER: Kokomo is a confirmed Catholic. She was filled with the strength of the Holy Ghost.

ALICE: I didn't know axe-wielding was one of His gifts.

FLETCHER: I'll have to ask my catechist the next time we meet.

ALICE: Are you a catechumen?

FLETCHER: I'm an inquirer. Kokomo is my ever patient sponsor.

ALICE: Was that before she caught you?

FLETCHER: I suppose I wanted her to find it. She has a point, as far as art is concerned. Whatever one thinks of its medicinal uses, it can't cure a lack of imagination.

ALICE: The sensory awareness it provides or the perception of time one experiences under its influence can benefit pursuits like contemplation or flower arrangement.

FLETCHER: What's made you such a passionate partisan? Have you partaken of the peace pipe?

ALICE: Occasionally. It's been more often than that. I used to work for a florist. There was never any reason not to smoke. To be completely honest, I accidentally brought some with me.

– ACT II, lines 121-130

LESBIAN: What are you in the mood for?

MS. JACKSON: Love.

LESBIAN: I thought we couldn't do it here. I though we might get caught.

MS. JACKSON: Who cares?

LESBIAN: I do. I don't want to see you get hurt.

MS. JACKSON: Who's going to hurt me?

LESBIAN: Your husband.

MS. JACKSON: My husband is nobody's concern.

LESBIAN: What about your son?

MS. JACKSON: What about him?

– ACT I, lines 889-898

MS. JACKSON: If he came to me repentant of his sins - I mean all of them - I would forgive him. I would consider allowing him to return to this house. Do you think I don't want him? I want him more than you could ever know. I want him in a way that, unfortunately, I have never had him. I won't settle for less than I deserve. That's all I'm going to say on the subject. It upsets me. Your father has behaved strangely in the past; as of late, his actions have been frightening me. Maybe it is the climate around here - I'm not going to take any chances. (to KOKOMO) I want you to watch out for him, in case he should try to violate you.

FLETCHER: That is unwarranted.

MS. JACKSON: It may have taken a hundred and fifty years for another murder to occur, but we are not immune to rape. We need only bear witness to what took place on Pitcairn in recent times. Six men were found guilty of sexual offenses. That's almost the entire adult male population over there. I'm not going to let that happen around here - not while I'm alive. Do you understand? As soon as you're done with this mess, Kokomo, I would like these towels to go to the laundry. We have all of Lesbian's things to wash.

KOKOMO: I have a question, ma'am.

MS. JACKSON: Yes?

KOKOMO: Will our guest from New Zealand be staying with us for considerably longer than planned? If that's the case, I'm going to have to make a new schedule.

MS. JACKSON: I don't know, dear. I don't think so, but, then again, you can never be sure, can you? Just stick to the current schedule for now. I'm sorry if you've been overworked.

KOKOMO: That is not my concern at all.

MS. JACKSON: I just want Homo to feel as welcome as possible. Thank you for your continued cooperation. Excuse me.

Usage of Concern in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Freedom from liability being the top concern for the Postal Service, something they called "safety," each new carrier assigned to Rural Route 6 was instructed to "watch out for" the postman on Rural Route 2. This involved craning one's head around the hedgerow. This is the instruction Mark the Magnificent received when Rural Route 6 become one of his regular leave replacement assignments. It was a task he followed diligently for about the first three days.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story about something horrible that unfortunately exists in real life

Indiana's unsolicited effort to inform, her continuous concern for speaking, that pressing aural nightmare which persists even after you've pledged to avoid its acoustical tyranny, that vocal plying, that musical stream of input once you've gotten used to it, that involuntary sickness betrayed something deliberately hushed, waiting in the dark, reaching for somebody's arm, whispering its presence as she punctuated her sentences, turning her head to stare vacantly past a shoulder for a moment to catch her breath, before turning once more to speak. It seemed like the panic of an animal who knows it's about to be eaten. It was tinged with a growing sense of resignation.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.

This is the last one left in it's original packaging and my supporters - like the poor women of Bielsko - are going to have to fight for it. Whoever invests the most money with me, and who lets me borrow it to invest in the next lot, will not only be rewarded with some beautiful piece of art, but will get this priceless t-shirt as a reward for being my top supporter. $1000.00 or best offer. Remember to authorize me to hold the sum as credit against a future purchase and to authorize me to borrow against it.
