Hair, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's poring over the potency of expanding his herculean Fiction Corpus with a coffee table book describing contemporary wall art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the potential of honoring English as a worldwide language. I don't think highly of the uninspiring system by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Boosting a person's intimacy with a language isn't like launching a more resilient bow. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't just a tool that you can learn to use with a greater amount of precision. A spoken language can't be sequestered from the competing values of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A proper educator has to create a strategy for introducing it; the discerning pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language based on a particular corpus, a body of written works of varying size and consistency. Such a corpus can include everything from a book about literature to a few science fiction novels. I watched many nights pass laboring on my "unheroic" Fiction Corpus in order to form a special sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have scrutinized them, reshaping them - not just to teach the English tongue but to defend the human spirit, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

Though I felt fully formed as a writer, and had been trained in visual language, it was my first time with a professional camera in my hands. I was just learning the ins and outs and had come to Europe to find as diverse a selection of subject matter as possible, preferably something that fit my aesthetic devotion to promoting body acceptance. Enter Margo.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Hair

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word hair in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word hair, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word hair is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Hair in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"Get up!" I yelled. He pushed back his chair and got up.

Verse 1183 from the chapter called Security

It was said that the practice originated some time after the Second Coming of Yellowstone, when, for some reason, there was an epidemic of sarcoptic itch, or scabies, which, being caused by a mite of very small proportions, is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. However, long after the threat had passed, the habit remained and became infixed in what is called 'the parochial imagination' as part of the sacredness and immutable tradition and righteousness of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. When the priest bade his congregation and all assembled guests to share the sign of peace, Jesus watched as Hitler Panzer-Tank extended his hand to his wheelchair-bound neighbor. The old grandmother was shocked. She nodded her head as brusquely as possible and turned it back around. Jesus chuckled, but it wasn't funny. Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third was genuinely confused. Holding his hand out, he didn't understand what had just happened. It took him several moments before he finally concluded that the woman in the wheelchair had just rejected him. By that time he was facing forward again, his arm was back at his side, and his face was expressing his extreme displeasure. Jesus caught his eyes and nodded. Your grandfather decided not to nod back.

Verse 97 from the chapter called Vows

When the chairman of the board of Poland's largest petroleum dealer was arrested by the Office of the Protection of the State, it was big news. What was even bigger news was the fact that the Prime Minister and his colleagues had immediately appointed a new chairman of the board just so that chairman could sign a deal with two naturalized Polish citizens from the Ukraine, who, as 'former musicians,' had founded a company with five-thousand dollars in start-up capital and had succeeded in making that business the most powerful petroleum broker in the East. The fact that these two Ukrainians now had an iron-tight hold on Poland's petroleum imports, all of which were coming from the Russian Federation, was the biggest news of all. People were convinced that these two 'former Ukrainian musicians' were, in fact, Russian spies.

Verse 11 from the chapter called Security

The only problem was that Jesus needed not only papal confirmation but also permission from temporal authorities, which meant, in this case, Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third, who, as chairman of its central planning committee, was running AMOC. Now, dear old Hitler had been courting the Vatican's favor for years - the new Trappist monastery in Bohemia was only the latest of his many extravagant and more-than-generous gifts. In exchange for continued support - and by support was meant not describing his war effort as unjust, Hitler Panzer-Tank was more than prepared for concessions, including a permanent and veto-wielding seat in the Presidium, rights-of-way for members of the clergy and religious orders, and, best of all, land grants.

Verse 219 from the chapter called Security

The former U.S. Army colonel, as commander of an independent army unit within the Autonomous Mars-bound Outer-space Cooperative (AMOC), which, upon wresting control of the Martian orbit from Revolutionary (or whoever's) hands, would then organize the invasion of Mars, which, from the surface, would thence be controlled by LARC (Landed Anti-Revolutionary Command), was granted by Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third, chairman of AMOC's central planning committee, a permanent and veto-wielding seat in the Presidium, the war council of indeterminate size which, on the Martian surface, would exercise control over LARC, and which, with the LARC Secretariat, would form the backbone of it administration. Anyone in command of an independent army unit was eligible for a voting seat. Whether that seat were permanent or veto-wielding was symbolically dependent on the size of the army unit in question, but, in reality, the decision was entirely in the hands of Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third, who installed himself as Presidium chairman.

INDIE: Me too: you look very handsome.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 9, Intoxication, Paragraphs 193-198

Christie's hue struck a personal chord with me; I had once seriously considered dying my own boring hair a similar color. I confessed as much to Macy, and was quite surprised when he echoed my fascination. This inspired a very intimate conversation, the most intimate we had ever had; that night I remarked to myself how much we had grown as friends, how close to each other's hearts we had finally come, especially in those last few hours, and, suddenly infatuated with his openness, I felt quite safe judging him the best of my friends. I was not yet aware of my latent jealousy, but my ignorance was not to last.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 6, Third Party Intervention, Paragraph 1, Clauses 11-15

Across from them was an older black woman. Despite her age, and because of it, she was almost pretty, with few wrinkles and very nice hair. She was wearing a pant suit. I imagined her being kissed by the Indian woman sitting in the next seat. She was very attractive. She had very nice brown skin. Her features were not overwhelming.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 8, Allowing For One's Imagination, Paragraph 5

When the double doors opened, he saw an eighty-pound woman (with gigantic, brown curly hair) sticking out her enormous tongue and screaming. She was flicking that gigantic tongue in his direction. And she was screaming: you could see the bones of her ribcage vibrating. She was a walking, screaming skeleton - but she rushed at Nike with ferocious energy, like the murderously hungry lion - that's what she was: a hungry lion: sick and emaciated. I would say lioness, but that would be assuming too much. You really couldn't tell what that creature was. She was naked, but there was some sort of external genitalia, large and heavy - God knows what it was. Anyway, the only piece of anything touching her body was a thick iron collar. It was attached, by a very long chain, to something coming through the double doors. It was only this chain that prevented her from attacking Nike, and he was very grateful.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 14, Getting to the Heart of a Matter, Paragraph 53

The face of the imagined person was always hidden, and, because I mostly have no idea what Nike's patrons look like, their physical characteristics would only change by type: all the young women that Nike knew, for example, would look the same: among their many attributes, they all had long blond hair, for instance - whereas all the middle-aged women would look like his aunt - which is to say, Indiana.

Patsy, on the other hand, was drawn by a different feast: the confident stride of youth, emerging from the sea, hands pushing back wet strands, an elbow pointing up, pulling with it a tortuous line of shade across flesh, a motion of such immense gracefulness that, once reaching its climax, it just as soon hid the soft, pale underbelly of the arm that led down to a freshly matted pit of delicately trimmed hair, still peaking from beneath those drawn shoulders, pointing to a pair of bubbly breasts, which, ever so mournfully, turned away, presenting the elegant boxwood bouts of the back, dimpled above the ass, bending now at those generous hips before pushing off with the springiness of freshly leavened dough, and disappearing like satin gauze upon the waves. Now that, thought Patsy, was a girl in desperate need of police investigation.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
