Monkey, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is considering the concept of strengthening his trivial Fiction Corpus with a treatise on canvas art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the concept of promulgating English as an international language for the world. I do question the unspectacular recipe by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Strengthening a person's know-how with a language isn't like promoting a stronger brace. A language - a common language - is not merely a tool that you can learn to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A shared tongue can't be cut off from the professed knowledge of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching students to recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A proper teacher has to find a method of introducing it; the wisest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying scope and consistency. A corpus may contain everything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of adult fiction. I burnt many candles developing my "puny" Fiction Corpus to form a precise class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have scrutinized them, reframing them - not just to teach the English language but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I had grown up in America. Land of opportunity. I came of age in the booming 90s when everything was possible. She had grown up in Poland. She had come of age at a time when the Soviets were making sure that there wasn't even anything to eat in the country. I couldn't even properly translate the word "opportunity" into Polish.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Monkey

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word monkey in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word monkey, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word monkey is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Monkey in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

I really started to dance. I did a few acrobatics. The monkey played along. He started dancing a monkey dance, waving his long monkey arms and hands, using his tail to stand up. He was upstaging me, the monkey bastard. I stripped off my jacket. I started unbuttoning my shirt. The game was on, but poor, little monkey boy didn't know what I had in mind. Having taken off my shirt, I rolled it up and started whipping him. The monkey didn't like it. The deejay started playing DEVO's 'Whip It.' I gave him another thumbs-up. Club 2000 never had a better floorshow: that was it.

Verse 393 from the chapter called Bohemia

She was like a child, I thought, wondering if she hadn't completely forgotten this morning's coldness and her pointed remark about the monkey's presence. Did she even remember that my sister had died at the hands - or, more appropriately, the heroin - of Krupniks? Where was the coldness that dawn had greeted? It was swapped for the sun, for sandwiches without meat.

Verse 895 from the chapter called Bohemia

It was not sheep, however, that sat in the booth across from me that fateful night. On the one hand, it was a Krupnik. On the other hand, I was faced with a strange and abnormal child - not yet a woman, though the law might have said otherwise. It was a chipmunk: a wide, brown-eyed chipmunk, with a monkey wrapped around her shoulders. She was afraid of housecats, the kind that terrorized her without using their claws: the ones that kept her always within reach by lightly squooshing down on her delicate body with their paws, treating her like a ball of yarn, making her slowly unravel until she disappeared.

Verse 435 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Because this monkey," she said, "eats anything you feed it. Sacha said that whenever I get crazy about food, all I have to do is feed the monkey." Your mother laughed a fake laugh as I stopped walking. My face was stern.

Verse 749 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Fine," I said. "Bring the monkey. Maybe he'll find something." I was already walking away.

Verse 523 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Monkey in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

BERT: I suppose, well - no, what are you talking about?

INDIE: Well I refuse to be escorted by two mismatched people. You had better dress down Albert.

ANDY: I'm sorry, Indiana: I would've worn a tuxedo but I don't have one.

INDIE: Would you like one?

ANDY: I'm sorry?

INDIE: Stand next to Albert.

BERT: Lift up your arms, my boy. Spread them out.

INDIE: See, you are exactly the same size.

BERT: No, we're not: his arms are longer.

ANDY: I have the arms of a monkey.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

"You seem to know a lot for a man who plays Monkey Ball."

"Don't underestimate the game."

"Are you the team's only human?"

"There's one other: a guy named Shaq. He's from West Africa. He's our power forward."

"Does he speak slurpee?"

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a lesbian detective

The woman cocked her head. "What makes you an expert?"

Uzumaki gave her a cold stare. "The girls on the near-side are highly regulated, Ms. Read."

"In that case, you should know how desperate they are. Every other slurpee is out there willing to blow a guy for a handshake."

"Never mind. I'm here to offer you work." The woman squinted in surprise. "Monkey Ball," continued Uzumaki, "is the backbone of the lunar economy. Somebody on the far side is threatening it."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a colony on the dark side of the moon

"They're aliens. They live on the dark side of the moon. They're descended from a jawless fish. The sexes are indistinguishable."

"Almost indistinguishable," corrected Uzumaki. "Are you familiar with their language?"

The woman snorted. "I don't speak slurpee."

"What about their customs?"

"I hear they procreate through their mouths."

"Are you a fan of Monkey Ball?"

"What am I doing here?"

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring an alien culture

The rocket sled zoomed towards Sams Town. Despite the roar, Neal tried to familiarize Tatum with Monkey Ball. He shouted, "It was originally played outside in space suits. When the colony was young, technicians spent their free time throwing moon rocks into holes. The game evolved. People used two craters-one for each team. The ellipse described by them would form the field."

"How big would the field be?"

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a frank discussion of what it means to trust someone

"There's a Monkey Ball team based near the north pole-perhaps you've heard of them: the Sams Town Blackguards. They're owned by a Manga person named Zyplukk. He's not high on our list of priorities. I want you to hang around the team. Take pictures. Send them wirelessly back to us."

"That's it?" Read sneered. "How much?"

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
