Mountain, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's considering the soundness of strengthening his heroic Fiction Corpus with a fictional history of art galleries; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the prospect of implementing English as a global lingua franca. I do challenge the enfeebling tactics by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Enriching one's knowledge of a language isn't like bringing about a more valuable coin. A language - a living tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A common tongue can't be segmented from the professed knowledge of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching pupils to recite English is to strip them of its cultural context. A capable teacher has to develop a technique for introducing it; the perceptive student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a particular corpus, a body of written language of varying scope and consistency. This corpus may include everything from a book about literature to a collection of science fiction reviews. I lost many a night forging my "awe-inspiring" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have classified them, reformulating them - not simply to teach the English tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

Being from America, all I had to do in Europe was turn on the radio to hear an American song. All I had to do was walk into a movie theater to see an American movie. To be understood all I had to do was speak English. Being from Poland, she couldn't stand listening to the radio for all the political nonsense being bandied about. She didn't like watching American movies because she claimed they all ended the same way. She didn't want to speak English with me because she not only wanted to say things correctly but she wanted to say them her way and nobody had ever succeeded in teaching her how. I desperately wanted to understand. She wanted to be understood.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Mountain

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word mountain in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word mountain, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word mountain is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Mountain in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Jesus was thirteen years old when his mother died - thirteen years old. When his aunt bought him his one-way ticket to Poland, he had no idea that he would never be coming back. He would never again see those amber waves of grain, those fruited plains above the purple mountains' majesties. Never again would he see those spacious skies that were filled with dust. Good riddance! "This country has been unkind to me," said your father, not knowing that he was never again to return. He would miss those wide roads, those untamed forests - but much, much later, when the year was twice as long, and Martian winds blew red dust.

Verse 75 from the chapter called Adolescence

In those days, America was everywhere: in your eyes, in your ears, your nose, your mouth, your hair. You could smell it, taste it, brush it away with your hands - but it kept coming back. It was under your fingernails, lodged permanently between your toes, your legs, your buttcrack. Everywhere you went, you felt it. Walking down the street, you felt it. Everywhere you went, you found it. Getting off the bus, you found it: there it was! right there: in front of you: next to you and above you - always out of reach, like a dirty cloud. If you went to the store, you found it. If you went shopping, you found it. The shelves were never empty. If you went to the woods, you found it. If you went to the hills, you found it: America! the beautiful! Amber waves of grain! Purple mountains' majesty! Majestic, purple skies! filled with mountains! The haze! Once-fruited plain! Dizzy, dizzy, dizzy! The fox-trot! The twist!

Verse 76 from the chapter called Childhood

"Alright," said Jesus, laughing. "If you say so. This is Wine Mountain." They were climbing up a hill.

"Is it named after wine?"

Verses 428-429 from the chapter called Security

"When we pass by these trees, you'll see the beautiful ridges of Wine Mountain. They've been partially dug into and made very thin. You'll have to watch yourself."

"Why are they so thin?" asked Zoe.

Verses 454-455 from the chapter called Security

"I don't know," said Jesus. "It's also got another name: Kitty Mountain."

"You don't know what to call it?"

Verses 430-431 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Mountain in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I am shrunk. I am like one who has reached a desert valley in the mountains. If I climb the nearest peak, I can see just how far I am from Paradise. I can see it: but it's so very far away! It is so far that I should never even leave, but I must. And I will. But the desert will remain. And I am not the first nor the last who must cross it.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 4, Self-image, Paragraph 5, Clauses 1-7

NIKE: Listen to this: apparently, there's this Polish village in the Beskid Mountains. It's been making lace for centuries. Families have their own traditional designs and everything - you know: passed down for generations; this stuff is ancient. Every daughter has to learn this before she turns six or something, before her fingers are too old to learn. So they've been making lace for years - mostly for the church, you know: vestments, lace cloths, whatever - I don't know what you Catholics need. Anyway: times are tough, right? They're always tough when you're in a village. These people are workin' their little farms; they're tryin' to have a good time - but, when the church cuts back on lace - ooh! that's when the trouble starts. So what did these women do? the young ones? They started making stringi. Do you know what stringi are? They're thongs, man. They're makin' thongs! They sell 'em on the Internet. Luka just bought one for his woman.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

Gog and Magog followed the river valleys into the southern mountains. They found two gigantic smoldering peaks [e.g. Mount Elbrus]. Gog sent scouts to investigate them. Finding no signs of divine habitation, Gog decided to wait. Magog told him the people were not prepared to risk a lengthy sojourn in the mountains. They resumed their journey.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man who slays dragons

Gog was directed toward the mountains of the north-east. "Once you reach the plain, you will see it. The peak is sharp; the face, smooth. Beware of Azi Dahaka, the dragon that was chained there by Keresaspa. You will see his breath rising from the summit. Do not pass the chasms carelessly. He will snap at your heels."

Gog thanked them for their concern. He assured them he had already killed one serpent daughter of Gandaruba. "If Azi Dahaka has sons," said Gog, "I will arrange a meeting for them with Skin Smoother."

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story about wisdom

"No wonder Indra is offended," said Gog. "Sargon takes upon himself the mantle of the most high. He is possessed by the aka mainyu [i.e., to ancient Iranians, the spirit of evil]. We have no choice but to appease the Asha [i.e., righteousness personified]. Our people have been selected for this duty. They will follow the sea to the mountains. They will raid and plunder the lands of Sargon.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man of hope

Gog and Magog continued southeast in search of the Medeans. Encountering a tribe whose speech was intelligible, they inquired as to the location of High Harrah. "We know this mountain," said the chiefs. "It lies to the east. Find the tribe of the Magi. Among our people, they are the ones who keep the Haoma."

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story about following your beliefs

"You are the jewel of our race," he told the champion of the west. "May the Bhag Indra bless you. May the Bhag Mithra be with you. Take our people south. Conquer the towns of the two rivers [i.e., the Tigris and Euphrates]. Go to the holy mountain, the Harrah Berezati. Offer up our swords to the holy host."
