Reason, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is studying the idea of extending his king-sized Fiction Corpus with a history of the art gallery; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the concept of honoring English as the international community's second language. I do reject the pleasureless program by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Reenforcing a person's skills with a language isn't like pioneering a smoother toilet paper. A language - a living tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A shared language can't be divided from the competing values of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching pupils to recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A capable instructor must have a blueprint for introducing it; the discerning pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a particular corpus, a body of written language of various scope and consistency. This corpus could contain anything from a book about literature to some really contemporary realistic fiction. I lost many a night forging my "impressive" Fiction Corpus to form a peculiar class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have devised a million words and I have tabulated them, reshaping them - not just to teach a tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

As an American, I was full of optimism and confidence bordering on recklessness. I was ready to run the wheels off the car I had just bought and eventually I would. As a European, she was cautious and mistrustful. She needed to make sure the air conditioner worked. Which it did. If you knew how to turn the broken knob in just the right way.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Reason

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word reason in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word reason, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word reason is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Reason in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

When Baron Cohen-Krupnik got out, Jesus was not surprised. The man of Jesus's youth was holding an electric drill in his right hand; the drill bit was sandstone. He wasn't very amused; his face was without expression. Walking in front of Jesus and standing a few meters away from him, it was a while before he said, "There must be a reason why you're sitting there."

"With a gun," said Jesus.

Verses 35-36 from the chapter called Arms

"Innocent people are going to die for no good reason."

Verse 987 from the chapter called Bohemia

In the history of litigation, nobody had ever dared bring such a case before the International Court of Justice. The main reason was 'contributory negligence,' something which the defendants could easily plead, seeing as how few people could legitimately claim that they had never done anything to contribute to the world's air pollution. Here is where your grandfather's genius came through: he had never let your grandmother drive a car; she had never operated any kind of combustion engine; she had never even made a fire, having always cooked on electric stoves; she was immaculate, having spent most of her life in bed, never having owned a house, and therefore never having had to heat one with coal or gas - she was perfect.

Verse 60 from the chapter called Adolescence

The next day, Zoe whispered, "I do." The priest asked if there were anyone present who knew of any reason why these two should not be joined in Holy Matrimony. Jesus was silent. The priest waited for a very long time - an extraordinary amount of time - but Jesus didn't say a word. He was so angry.

Verse 215 from the chapter called Vows

Without license to buy more weapons, Jesus had to be very stingy. Not till he signed on with SECURITA did Jesus gain the privilege, thanks to that security firm's contract, of being able to buy whatever he wanted (which the firm even tried to subsidize, but Jesus, more often than not, paid from his own pocket, which prevented his so-called superiors from requisitioning his equipment). In fact, it was during his first few months of tenure with SECURITA that Jesus found Baron Cohen-Krupnik with bullets in his head. Through a fluke, he was the first one to arrive at the crime scene. The landlord who had rented Baron the apartment also happened to be an old friend of Stalin's. Jesus was able to take photographs, which he later used to convince your mother, Zoe Guderian, that her fiancé's family was not up to snuff, not that she ever thought they were (for various reasons), but, after seeing poor Baron with bulletholes in his head (someone she had once had the displeasure of socializing with), she was convinced, despite her better judgment, to continue her relationship with Sacha Cohen-Krupnik, just so she could spy for your father, which she did, with painstaking effort, going so far as to marry the bastard, which your father deeply regretted.

Verse 420 from the chapter called Arms

Usage of Reason in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Your destiny is that everything is open to you: now that the world is so open, there is no reason not to apply this new experience that we gained by living through that suspension. And we have given you that legacy; you are all very lucky. You are children of the old millennium; and yet, you are living on the edge of the new one. Your generation is going to define that millennium for the rest of history. And we are all jealous of you: because this whole new world is waiting. It is true: you don't have to change it. You just have to enjoy it. Make it do what you want. That's all you have to do.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 30, Presenting Oneself to a Potential Husband, Paragraph 4, Clauses 7-16

So anyway: there's only one reason I remember the opium dealer. One time, when he came by the apartment, he was standing outside on the steps: one foot on a higher step, the other foot stretching almost to the ground; his arms were spread out: one was grasping the railing, the other one was balancing. As he talked to Nike, I was standing in the doorway watching him balance like this. He kept moving his arms around and shifting his weight, balancing in a new way, playing with the stairs and gravity like so many had done before him. He kept moving his head too - but he wasn't looking around: his eyes were always on Nike, or else on Brian (who was also talking to him), and sometimes, he would look at me for a while, even though I don't think I ever said a word. And looking at us, he kept moving his head around - like a pet bird, but slower and more deliberate.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 6, Doing Business, Paragraph 1

I was unsure how to reply, but I trusted my judgment and proceeded cautiously, saying to Macy: "Children, if not completely necessary, are at least basic to the concept of marriage. So yes, I think it made them sad. If Hogarth had been really smart, he wouldn't have eloped with her until she was pregnant; that's what most people did back then. As for me, I have no reason to elope. Who needs to elope these days? Who could present such a problem to one's family? People are too progressive these days to be bothered. The principle of personal autonomy has trumped all other virtues. What potential suitor could possibly provoke such resentment? It is perfectly preposterous; I would be ridiculed if I tried."

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 13, Bringing Up a Delicate Subject, Paragraph 4

NIKE: Speak for yourself. I'm gonna be outta here soon, right, Doc? There ain't no reason to keep me: so you better keep your fuckin' eyes open, Jauvert, 'cause there's gonna be some dead Bulgars on your doorstep.

CHR: You can pick up your car now.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 8, Being a Victim, Paragraphs 42-43

But if he were afflicted with happiness - if he were happy for no apparent reason, if happiness came permanently to lodge in his soul - he would not understand why, he would not know what to do, and this would make him uncomfortable.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 1, Cancer, Paragraph 7, Clauses 3-4

Usage of Reason in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

(FLETCHER and MS. JACKSON exit.)

LESBIAN: Now my passions are roused! In this room lies my chance to consummate my love for her. How wonderful a thing is a parlor! Only a lecher seeks his victims in their own beds. Normal folk must wait for respectable opportunities to have their lusts filled. My landlady knows as well as I that, once the rest of the house has gone to sleep, having respected my privacy, I shall have reason to wake her - or she me - whichever the case may be, depending on who can resist temptation longer. With looks such as hers, I doubt I can.

– ACT II, lines 307-307

GREY GOOSE: Don't worry. Your little love-toy is safe.

MS. JACKSON: You insult me.

GREY GOOSE: What exactly do you think I've done?

MS. JACKSON: I'm not going to give you the pleasure of describing to you your atrocities.

GREY GOOSE: I wish I could say the same thing.

ALICE: What's going on?

GREY GOOSE: Ask your landlady. She thinks she knows everything.

MS. JACKSON: What have you done?

GREY GOOSE: You first. Did you or did you not approach the Australian police with your unjustified suspicions that I might have committed the first murder this island has seen in over one hundred and fifty years? Did you not, in fact, tell them I was capable of committing such a crime? Are you not the reason why I was named a person of interest? Answer me.

MS. JACKSON: Never.

– ACT I, lines 1091-1100

FLETCHER: (to ALICE) You first.

ALICE: I understand you had jury duty today.

FLETCHER: I did.

ALICE: How was it?

FLETCHER: Dreadful. I was almost instantly excused by the Australian prosecutor.

LUKE: Sorry, mate.

FLETCHER: The Kiwi defense lawyer didn't even stand a chance. I've never been so insulted.

ALICE: Why didn't he want you?

FLETCHER: He didn't have to state a reason. It's all the more embarrassing since I seem to be the only man on this island who didn't know the victim.

MS. JACKSON: Don't start that again.

– ACT I, lines 73-82

GREY GOOSE: I've waited long enough, woman. I deserve an answer.

MS. JACKSON: I will not answer you.

ALICE: Why not?

GREY GOOSE: She's guilty.

MS. JACKSON: I've done nothing wrong.

GREY GOOSE: Swear to it.

ALICE: There's no reason not to tell the truth.

GREY GOOSE: Unless you're a rat.

ALICE: Remember what I told you. There are three things which everybody is owed: honesty, gratitude, and remorse. As my grandmother taught me, one must say, 'Thank you,' and 'I'm sorry,' and, by gosh, one has to mean it. If you've had cause to hurt somebody, you should tell that person you're sorry and you'll try to make sure it never happens again. Unless you know it will - in which case, you recognize that something is difficult. If it's something to which your partner is contributing, you make a resolution to cooperate on that. Eventually, things work out. If you've done nothing wrong, you thank your partner for his interest, humbly deny any involvement, and proceed to send him off on his merry way. I took marriage lessons with Luke for a year. They were quite helpful.

MS. JACKSON: Thank you.

– ACT I, lines 1101-1110

FLETCHER: I'm glad you liked it.

LESBIAN: We happened to see your father looking down on us the whole time from a cliff.

FLETCHER: What do you mean?

LESBIAN: He was staring at us the entire morning from a cliff. I thought he was going to jump.

FLETCHER: He was just standing there?

LESBIAN: He was just standing there.

LUKE: I went up to him. He was only watching us bathe.

ALICE: I hope he liked it.

FLETCHER: Don't mind him. My father's a bit crazy. One time, I woke up in the middle of the night. It was about three in the morning. I saw him standing in front of a pine tree, trying to decide whether or not he should chop it down. This was three in the morning. There was absolutely no reason for him to chop it down. It was really quite bizarre.

Usage of Reason in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The Amazon was not convinced. He wanted spies. He wanted somebody Orbitz could not resist. He asked for and received approval for an arousal profile. It determined that Orbitz's taste for the opposite sex tended towards the slighty exotic. His taste for men closely matched his own mostly human pedigree. Out of all Alliance staff members in the local database two scientists fit the profile perfectly. A human astrobiologist named Pfizer Microsoft and an astrolinguist of mostly Eridanian extraction pursuing a medical degree. Neither had according to their records any reason to be loyal to Orbitz. They had never met the man. The Amazon made sure. He first trotted Doctor Microsoft before a board of inquiry. The Astrazeneca listened as he vehemently denied being a Wiki-en. They said, "This is truth." Then the Amazon brought out the Eridanian. She had been born and raised in the Solar System. She had never visited her ancestral world. She was young. Innocent. Her skin beautifully tinged with blue. She said her name was Sara Lee.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Steve, Peter and I wandered around for a while. We spotted Mary walking down the sidewalk. We didn't stop to say hello. We went to a bar. There was barely anyone there. A guy on the patio was seated with his dog. Steve was a dog owner. It gave him a reason to chat. I focused on the bar girl but not to my benefit.

– from “Woodstock,” a life story based on what really happened, namely to the author

Orbitz Número Dos turned to Orbitz Number One. He ignored the look of confusion in his eyes. "I'm the reason I'm under surveillance," he said. "I've become a Wiki-en, haven't I?" He turned to Orbitz Nombre Trois. Orbitz Nombre Trois didn't react. "Have I fallen in love with the girl?" asked Orbitz Número Dos.

"What girl?" asked Orbitz Number One.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Steve O thought about Adam often. Usually after a break-up with a girl. He missed being able to share all the dirty secrets. For some reason Steve O had never found another friend like Adam. Their relationship had been unique.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that doesn't strive towards anything lofty, but what you make of it is up to you

Orbitz pretended to consider the offer. It was obviously out of the question. Marriott's CPU was all the way in the Orion cluster. That's where he was heading. To steal her. There was no reason to waste time on a interstellar download. "Not now," said Orbitz. "There'll be time for that."

"How do I know?" asked a voice. It was coming from the door to the corridor. A man stepped onto the bridge. Except for the scars on his body he looked just like Orbitz.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
