Skin, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's debating the soundness of extending his trivial Fiction Corpus with some really contemporary realistic fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the potency of administering English as a worldwide language. I don't accept the routinely sanctioned process by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Boosting a person's know-how with a language isn't like launching a more resilient bow. A language is not merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A shared language can not be insulated from the philosophical currents of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A capable educator must find a method of introducing it; the discerning pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of writing of varying scope and consistency. Such a corpus might contain anything from a book about literature to some true friendship stories. I lost many a sleepless night forging my "measly" Fiction Corpus to form a precise class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have strung together a million words and I have sorted them, reshaping them - not simply to teach English vocabulary but to defend the human soul, and to propel that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Skin

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word skin in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word skin, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word skin is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Pronunciation of SkinMargo on a trampoline

I have yet to publish a pronunciation for the word skin.

Video of me pronouncing "skin."

Definition of SkinMargo on a trampoline

The word skin is fetishized to mean a dirty organ that either should or shouldn't be seen depending on your tastes. It is otherwise an artifact whose dirtiness depends only on a person's exposure to enviromental pollutants, though such exposure along with any aesthetic inconsistencies may be a fuel for anxiety especially among youth. It can also refer to a kind of artifact related to this organ.

Usage of Skin in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

But the terrorists were persistent. When public opinion turned ambivalent, Jesus decided to withdraw from the Old Town as quickly and as quietly as possible. After all, he was running out of ammunition. There was only so much he could do without fresh resources. Negotiating through a Reserve Army controlled checkpoint, Jesus arranged for his men to be escorted by Union soldiers north to Treblinka, where the Reserve Army would accept their arms (those that they had brought with them, of course - not those that they had hidden away) and then hold a debriefing, asking them, for instance, why they had chosen to take it upon themselves to do the Polish Army's job - even though they knew the Polish Army was grossly underfunded, and, what's more, had totally destroyed the building in which those poor men had been imprisoned.

Verse 7 from the chapter called Bohemia

On the other hand, the village was fun. We would jump in the river, dodging cow cakes, pretending they were mines. Your father was the best. He never landed on a single cow cake. It was great fun. Sometimes the river was clogged with cow cakes. How could they eat so much? I thought. And how do they get in the dog-garn river? There were cow cakes everywhere - and your father never hit them. He always landed right between. He was the dog-garn best cow cake jumper in the village. Our cousin, Damian, was the worst. He was always covered in cow cake. "Hey Damian: you smell like crap!" we always said. When he was getting ready to jump, we said: "Uh-oh, watch out!" Then, boom! The mines were gone. It was great fun. We called him Sapper, the demolitions expert! Breaker of cow cakes! Man of incredible aim! And he was the skinniest one of us all!

Verse 140 from the chapter called Childhood

"If you don't start by sniffing or skin-popping," said the Irishman, "you can tell yourself: look: that's as good as it gets: from now on, it's only downhill. That way, you're satisfied."

"How much?" asked the Krupnik.

Verses 571-572 from the chapter called Adolescence

"That's nice," I said, chortling. "He can help me look for bullets." There was no way of knowing exactly what she meant without asking, but it seemed as if she were trying to say that she was still 'standing by her man,' which was meaningless, of course, considering that she had shown up. "We should go someplace wet," I said, "where the rain might've uncovered something." I led the way.

Verse 788 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Would he hurt you?"

"Not with his claws, but people feared his tongue: his black tongue, which people said was the tongue of death. If he licked you with it while you were awake, they said your skin would burn off."

"Uh-uh."

"If he licked you in the face and you accidentally looked into his eyes, they said your whole head would burst into flame."

"That's not true."

"That's what people said: they said if you woke up in the morning after sleeping by the fire and your face was wet, it was the Lonely Planet who licked it, and you were gonna die by midnight no matter what."

"That's bogus."

"That's what I said. 'Cause you're right: it's not true."

"It's not?"

"No. The Lonely Planet is a ghost wolf, but he's not a bad wolf: he's a good wolf."

"He is?"

"Yeah: but people don't believe it."

Usage of Skin in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Brother: you are asking me to consider that Indiana had designs on you when she might have known that she was pregnant with our beloved Fabric. That involves implications I really don't want to consider.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 31, Receiving A Curious Invitation, Paragraph 4

Oh my dear sister: if you are reading this, you already know under what circumstances this document must be written. I know that I will have called you, and you will most certainly have asked me what I've been doing, and I will undoubtedly have told you by the time you receive this letter that Albert is dying - but I have not yet told you, though I feel as if I were talking to you right now, and I must explain everything to you as if you were this paper, as if it were part of your body, the excess of your skin, temporarily grafted onto this cheap writing surface so that my pen, the natural extension of my steady hand, could make its furtive inscriptions, gently massaging your senses, while I prepare to hurt you, to harm your gentle skin, to break your heart by incising the horrible truth of my situation.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 2, Poetics, Paragraph 2

Across from them was an older black woman. Despite her age, and because of it, she was almost pretty, with few wrinkles and very nice hair. She was wearing a pant suit. I imagined her being kissed by the Indian woman sitting in the next seat. She was very attractive. She had very nice brown skin. Her features were not overwhelming.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 8, Allowing For One's Imagination, Paragraph 5

I looked back at Barbara just in time to see her fallen face. Somebody yelled out sixty and somehow she was able to squeeze out a painful smile across her lovely visage. But her muscles were not able to hold it long: the beggar offered an astounding eighty dollars, and she, dropping the corners of her wretched smile, had to fix the most pathetic face I have ever seen: like a mask of death sprinkled with glitter, painted with bright and happy colors that, aesthetically speaking, did not reconcile her now pale skin, or the uneven lines of her twisted lip, or relieve the tension of her naked brow in that beautiful but wretched face of slowly sinking features, relaxing themselves as if they knew the touch of death, and welcomed fate, even though the mouth was still fixed in horror, quietly extending the poetic moment with its cautious gaping, barely unfurling its bottom lip, as if still unsure of its fate in that final moment: a quiet appeal for justice that did not fall on blinded eyes, even though mine were temporarily imprisoned by her beauty in that smoky dungeon.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 7, Dating a Woman with Dogs, Paragraph 7

ANDY: That's what I figured. What about you, Luka?

NIKE: Hey, he's got a cut.

ANDY: I wasn't askin' you - how much is he payin' you?

NIKE: He's got a healthy cut: we're partners.

ANDY: Yeah, right: he's payin' you with weed.

NIKE: No, man: he grows the stuff.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 15, Dealing with Grand Schemes, Paragraphs 33-38

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

The sword cut the stomach to ribbons. The flesh began sticking to Gog's arms. He was finding it hard to move. He was running out of time. He thrashed himself about. His head hit a large ball. It was soft. His head bounced off it. It was the beast's air sac. Gog gripped the organ. Skin Smoother jabbed around it. Water started trickling in. The skin was pierced. Gog jabbed some more. The water rushed in. The air sac squeezed past the scales.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a frank discussion of what a real man should do in this world

"Forgive me," sputtered the boy. "I had to test your patience and your strength. I am sent from the court of Sargon by his son. He wishes to arrange a meeting between Skin Smoother and his father. He proposes five hundred men on each side in a fair fight. You would catch the king being carried in his chariot through the dense forests in the hills to the south. Sargon's son offers you me in return."

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man and a woman who fight with dragons

Gog took one breath as the head snapped forward. In an instant, the world went dark. Gog felt himself being pushed down the beast's throat. It was a long way down. There was no air. Inside the stomach, the walls burned. Gog pushed against them. It took all his strength to unsheathe Skin Smoother.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring idiot kings

Meanwhile, Gog carved a path towards Sargon's chariot. Skin Smoother grew heavy with Mesopotamian blood. As the sun poked through the leaves, the king's porters saw the heaven-sent iron gleam and drip.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring an ancient quest

Gog smiled. He said, "Don't tell me you still want to fight." The sword was pointed back at his throat. Skin Smoother smashed into it. This time, the blade bent into a right angle.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a frank discussion of where the gods are located

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

GREY GOOSE: Speak up.

MS. JACKSON: There is no lighter sound than the ring of truth. It springs from the tongue like a frightened toad, aiming its horny skin into the eyes of those who would seek to catch it. Were you to devour a million truths you would never find them all and you'd still be as hungry as when you first started - so beware, husband, lest you choke.

GREY GOOSE: On a frog in my throat? Have you gone mad? There are no frogs on this island, woman - in case you hadn't noticed your entire life. I suppose that friend of yours from New Zealand taught you to speak with such poetry.

MS. JACKSON: New Zealand has a great literary heritage. That's something you couldn't possibly understand.

GREY GOOSE: Am I daft?

MS. JACKSON: You are a bully: a no-good, bleeding, rebel-rousing bully.

GREY GOOSE: Alright.

MS. JACKSON: A fire-starter.

GREY GOOSE: Enough.

MS. JACKSON: Arsonist!

– ACT I, lines 301-310

LESBIAN: I'm proud of that.

MS. JACKSON: I want to show you love. I want to give you a home you can finally call your own.

LESBIAN: I know.

MS. JACKSON: We can be together. We don't have to hide. We can live here. This is my house.

LESBIAN: I understand it's important to you. You're a part of this place. You're a part of its charm, its beauty, its isolation, and its loneliness. I am not. I have lived a different kind of separation.

MS. JACKSON: Leave that life. Settle down with me.

LESBIAN: I desire you with every breath of life. I need you out on the open sea.

MS. JACKSON: Why can't you stop?

LESBIAN: Asking me to stop is madness. Darling, if you were to abandon this place, what would it mean? You'd be leaving the site of your seduction: the land of your shame. Who's to say we wouldn't return? By then, you would be a different woman. Is that what you're afraid of? Rebirth?

MS. JACKSON: Hold me. Never let me go.

– ACT I, lines 909-918

(LESBIAN enters, followed by ALICE and LUKE. KOKOMO exits.)

LESBIAN: What a day! My skin has never felt so tight.

FLETCHER: How has our island paradise been treating you, Lesbian?

LESBIAN: Not bad, Fletcher. I'm covered with salt.

FLETCHER: You happened to go naawe this morning.

LESBIAN: We went naawe this morning, as you like to call it, in Emily Bay.

ALICE: The water was lovely.

LUKE: The beach was bodgy.

ALICE: I think my husband got stung.

LUKE: In the blot.

– ACT I, lines 46-54

GREY GOOSE: She purrs like a kitten.

FLETCHER: She won't bite.

GREY GOOSE: Give the old gal a chance.

MS. JACKSON: I won't.

FLETCHER: She's ready and willing.

GREY GOOSE: She wants to please.

MS. JACKSON: I'm not going to indulge this.

FLETCHER: We're asking you to indulge yourself. We know you've wanted it.

MS. JACKSON: I have not.

GREY GOOSE: Are you prepared to deny yourself this long-coveted pleasure?

Usage of Skin in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Orbitz pulled up the hood of his skin-suit. Destiny lay aboard the Nautilus. Orbitz sputtered his way towards the stern of the ship. By the time he got to the airlock he could see the flashing red lights of an intruder alert. Marriott had done her job. Orbitz boarded the ship. He looked at the clock. There wasn't much time left before his bomb would explode. He headed carefully towards the gallery. He wasn't sure how this was going to happen. When he got to the hatch he saw Heather Mills. All eight of her legs were stretching to their limit. She was craning her head over the edge of the window, straining to see the Argo. She lifted herself a little higher with the hand bar. She dropped her doll. It didn't matter. She was fascinated by the ship's slow spinning descent. It was already transitting the planet. "That's why she doesn't see me," thought Orbitz. "She's distracted by the view. She knows there's an intruder but she's acting like nothing's wrong." Orbitz wondered for a moment if he had told himself too much. If Heather Mills might know what was happening. He tried to remember what he had told himself so many years ago. He smiled. He had mentioned the sauna. He had tried in vain to change his past. He had said go to the sauna. It was the one piece of the ship that went back in time. Heather Mills had read his mind on the bridge. That's why she was here. She had come to be next to the sauna. It was on the other side of the hall. Like a child she had been distracted. Orbitz realized his entire destiny pivoted on the childishness of this pathetic little girl. It made him give the lightest of chortles. Heather Mills jerked her head. She saw Orbitz's reflection in the dark part of the glass. Before she could turn around he had shut the hatch. He locked it. He turned and walked into the sauna.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

I had to go. The attack on Barack was the last straw. The news claimed all the attacks were coming from one bad boxing club. It couldn't have been true. I was seeing skinheads on every street corner. I begged my friends at the university to help. I just wanted to leave the city. By the end of the week I was staying at a friend's dacha. In the middle of winter. With no heat. I had to borrow a small furnace and forage for wood on my own. I was happy. I was safe.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that represents things that have actually happened, though the details are fictional

I thought about it. I realized how stupid I was. I should have know better. I felt charcoal crunching beneath me. It was disgusting. I huffed. I shouldn't have done that. Ash blew around me. It precipitated onto my face. I scrunched my eyes and mouth. I felt the ash speckling my skin. I breathed through my nose. Another mistake.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might ease one's fears depending on your outlook

On the third date, although Steve O didn't like to call it that, he made a point of asking about Adam's house. Adam told him it was being fumigated. On the fourth date there was a gas leak. Steve O began to suspect that either Adam was hiding a homeless man in his house or he was in fact homeless.

Steve O learned the truth on the fifth date. Adam brought Steve O home. He introduced him to his fiance. He was marrying a man. The invitations had been sent out. Months ago.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that nobody should think twice about, but what you make of it is up to you

"Heather Mills," said Orbitz. He kissed Sara Lee one last time. "You have to go," he said. He helped Sara Lee back into her skin suit. Before he put in her breathing apparatus he bowed his head and let her kiss him on the crown. It was a blessing. Orbitz watched the young woman sputter her way to the Nautilus. Of all the adventures they had ever had Orbitz loved these moments at Earth most of all. They had love and peace.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written with Stanislaw Lem in mind, if you know who that is

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
