Soul, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is debating the potential of strengthening his elephantine Fiction Corpus with a biography of artists; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the viability of exploiting English as a common language for the world. I don't trust in the irksome scheme by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Perfecting a person's intimacy with a language isn't like developing a stronger crankshaft. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to use with greater amounts of precision. A common tongue can't be isolated from the philosophical currents of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make pupils recite English is to deprive them of its cultural context. An informed instructor must create a strategy for introducing it; the perceptive student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written works of various scope and consistency. Such a corpus can contain everything from a book about literature to some real mind control fiction. I lost many a night developing my "extravagant" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drafted a million words and I have reduced them, reframing them - not just to teach a language but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Soul

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word soul in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word soul, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word soul is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Soul in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

What a hero! but, if he did it for the money, then he failed; if he did it for the social satire - God help his soul - it was a great sacrifice indeed.

Verse 58 from the chapter called Adolescence

"God knew His servant was remiss: in granting my wish - my request for a sibling! - He knew I could only pay Him with ingratitude. He sends me a sister and I send her back! What wretched curse behooves my soul? Must I have chosen such a destiny? What fate conspires with wolves and dogs to make me find your broken neck? O wretched curiosity! (whose boon for Man far outstrips its bane!) Why sniff? So many things can be poison! What sensations must have twirled around your virgin head! They drove you to the open window - for air, no doubt (even though its unadulterated nourishment has long been lacking). What confusion must have taxed your noble mind, which only hours before had entertained simple thoughts of worship. 'Holy Mary! Mother of God!' you had said. 'Pray for us sinners: now and at the hour of our death.' She was waiting for you, child! You are with her now in heaven: with our Holy Mother Mary! God bless you, child! You are the instrument of my reformation! The lamb of my destiny! Tell your heavenly hosts that I remember: I have taken to heart - I understand this cryptic reminder of theirs. For too long have I lived in the company of dogs and wolves without lifting a finger in the face of their lies and confabulations. When I asked for you, beloved sister, I was devoted to the truth. We had sung the true words: this land is your land, we had sung. This land is my land. Fate will have to find all those wolves and dogs who conspired against you, child. My punishment has already been paid. There is no greater penalty for a lonely shepherd than his one and only lamb. But when your enemies meet their ends, beloved child, they will not have met a lonely shepherd, but an angry shepherd in wolf's clothing.

Verse 608 from the chapter called Adolescence

"No problem," said his uncle. "Listen: if you need some work - I mean, if you want some money: you know, for your own...whatever - you can work in the store. I need someone to watch it. You can work whenever you want. The thing is: your father: he's got some things to do: some legal stuff now that your mother's dead - God bless her soul. It's nothing you need to worry about, but: who knows how long it's gonna take? You know? These legal things always tend to take a while. Anyway, you can live with your grandmother up in Treblinka, or, you can stay at my place up in Treblinka - either way, you can come and go whenever you want. Here's the key to my house. And here is the key to your grandmother's house. I can give you the store key, too, later, if you want. I don't have much time, you know? I'm always going around, doing stuff, like..." He trailed off. "Anyway, if you want to work, we can make a schedule, you know? So: that's entirely up to you. Like I said, who knows how long things are gonna take? When you get back from your mother's village, you can give me a call - anytime. I'll come pick you up. Hey: do you mind if we stop at the warehouse for a second? I need to pick up some clothes."

Verse 174 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Thank him?" asked his grandmother. "For what? For coming to the funeral? Go ahead: go and see what kind of filth he lives in. But he won't let you in, Jesus, because they're ashamed: they know what kind of filthy animals they are. They'll take you up to the second floor, I bet. They've got two rooms in there that are 'finished.' Take a look at the bedsheets. Take a whiff. They smell like mold. They've got down comforters. They've got stacks of wool blankets - and for what? Nobody sleeps there! They've got carpets on every side: on the floor, on the wall - they're stacked in the basement: ten carpets I saw leaning against the wall; ten more, stacked on top of the floor. You know who bought those things? The Commandant's wife: she was the worst one of them all (God rest her merry soul): she would come twice a week from their house in town: she would cook for them, shout them down for not working hard enough, then go back: to their house in town! Why did she buy those things? Why did she buy a swing she never got to swing in? Why did she buy a massage chair she never got to sit in? I sat in it! After she was dead, I sat in it! It's a lemon! It's German crap! Why did she buy it? Was it supposed to be part of her estate? She's dead! She's dead and buried like everybody else.

Verse 260 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Estate! He was Commandant for thirty years; Andrew worked in the electronics factory - this is how they spend their retirement? Keeping up their 'estate?' They furnished it with trash! Every floor has a furnace they found at the dump! Andrew burns coal, not because he has to, but because he can't afford a gas permit. He can't afford a gas permit because he hasn't sold a goddamn thing! Twenty-six hectares and what are they for? Inducing poverty? Who's going to buy from him? Nowadays, a village is no different from a city or a town or whatever it is you want to call it. People buy food from stores and not their neighbors. Well, maybe except for meat: that's about the only thing villagers won't buy from any store - and good thing too: maybe they'll start making good sausages again, 'cause right now - God forgive their greedy souls - they're full of extenders."

"I should go and thank him," said Jesus.

Usage of Soul in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

But now I begin to wonder if there be not a better way: it might be much more effective to apply Nike's sense of comfort to the situation: you see, my sister: there may be a way to reach his beleaguered and oblivious soul and to heal him through his appetite. But that is as far as I have come in my deliberations. Considering that my trip from the train station to the hospital was not a very long one, and that I haven't had enough time yet to consider a proper treatment, I have hope that someday soon, I will have a cure for Nike's comfort.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 1, Cancer, Paragraph 8, Clauses 5-8

No, on the contrary, my ego would grin, because he had betrayed his hand, broken through the artifice, exposing the ankle of his soul, but perhaps most of all because he had committed the gravest sin of an entertainer: he had been openly didactic.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 5, Falling in Love, Paragraph 5, Clauses 4-5

Finally, there's the soul, which we believe permeates both body and mind, and with which we associate what we call 'agape,' that unselfish loyalty or concern (the former based on common interest; the latter based on benevolence) which we direct toward God, to our fellow man, and, I daresay, even to the Devil. This good will (which only sometimes is complemented by common interest) has led us to seek equality and diversity in both national and domestic economies. It turns us into 'partners.'

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraph 5

I've been contemplating the nature of love, dear sister, and how our understanding of it must affect our ideas of marriage. I've been thinking of the Greatest Commandment: to love the Lord, my God, with all my heart, with all my soul, and with all my mind. I've been thinking of the second one, too: love my neighbor as myself. I know that I've never been sure what that meant: to love my neighbor as I love myself.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraph 1

This is not to say that such a meticulous pattern of behavior, over such a lengthy period, must necessarily be a conscious effort. On the contrary, this effort, being slow and cautious, betrays a very deep-rooted desire, the kind of bearable craving that drives the very soul, but which, on the surface of consciousness, may only seem like a sort of innocuous nagging - indeed, if one feels anything at all, which isn't usually the case.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 5, Warts, Paragraph 2, Clauses 1-2

Usage of Soul in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

GREY GOOSE: That's not what I mean.

MS. JACKSON: You devil!

GREY GOOSE: Ms. Jackson! Did you confide in the Aussie police - God preserve their infernal souls - your suspicions that I might be capable of murder?

MS. JACKSON: I will not answer you.

GREY GOOSE: Bitch!

MS. JACKSON: How dare you speak to me in such a filthy way?

GREY GOOSE: I will speak to you like that for as long as you deserve it.

MS. JACKSON: How have I merited this barbaric intrusion into my home and this battering of my senses? I am a scorned woman.

GREY GOOSE: Don't start playing the martyr.

MS. JACKSON: You seem to think I'm afraid of telling you the truth. I'm not.

– ACT I, lines 291-300

ALICE: I forgive you. Be a man once more.

FLETCHER: With a man's heart, I thank you. No longer must you fear my advances. The object of our intimacy has been achieved. I intend to follow your lead and pledge my life to the woman I love.

ALICE: Do I know her?

FLETCHER: You do. I love Kokomo with all my heart. My soul yearns for her soul's touch.

ALICE: In that case, let's finish these scenes in celebration of your restored manhood and your love for Kokomo.

FLETCHER: I know just the right page from which to start. 'What a blessed thing it is to confess! The firmly wound nut, when leashed to its bolt, will weather every blow. No strain is so big, no pressure so strong, no hand so steady, nor no patience so long that would eventually break the metal's hold when applied to just one end. It would turn forevermore in tantalizing defiance. Bring two solid hands together - with two worthy hearts - one to hold tight the bolt, the other to untwist his soul - and you shall feel the immediate release that with it brings joy, the work of resolution, and the ease which maketh that work seem slight.'

ALICE: Well proclaimed, poet!

FLETCHER: If only the rest were so good.

ALICE: I have no doubt it will be.

FLETCHER: As a show of thanks for your faith, I hereby expunge certain kisses from this scene, restoring to its solitary glory the one final kiss of the scene's end - if I may be so bold.

– ACT II, lines 194-203

FLETCHER: Oh, marriage! Where would man be without thy warm bondage? Those who fear the rope will never know the pleasure of being tied up: of pushing with all one's might only to stand still. It is a perverse joy, indeed, to take the plunge through the trapdoor: to hear one's soul snapping in two, pushing one's heart into one's throat: to say the words, 'I do.' To wed and then to bed - how old-fashioned an order! One cannot help but desire permanence in such an ever-changing world. To oppose it, lashed to a rock, feeling its weight crush one's spirit, may be a Promethean punishment best reserved for the noble. It is no wonder that only the force of custom and law kept so many together for so long. Matrimony is not for the faint of heart. So watch out, you concubines and concubinaries - you cohabitants and live-in friends: both cataracts and calm pools await you, but no peace at that river's end: just the wide, gaping maw of dissoluteness and abandon: the ocean of human desire, with nothing to do but sink. So swim home, like salmon, and enjoy rest: the comfort you get from being tied up. My prayers were answered: I am a man again - and soon to be more: a husband. Wish me luck, for the night is still young, and many acts of husbandry await me.

– ACT II, line 550

ALICE: Did somebody die?

FLETCHER: Don't ask.

ALICE: Yes.

FLETCHER: Even if your husband had died?

ALICE: It would.

FLETCHER: I've been wanting to confess this for so long. The island makes it hard. Who would have understood me if I had spoken? My mother? I pay my penance every time I hear her cry. She has no idea what part I played in that fire. I can't help feeling that, if I had stopped it, this family would never have had the problems it's had. Nobody died in that fire except for me. It was my own soul burning. As far as the house is concerned, restitution's been made. As for me, who would not find my weakness and ignore it? for the sake of convenience if not for shame. Who would restore my strength from the ashes?

ALICE: Let it be me. I will restore you.

FLETCHER: This is why I've been pursuing you. I knew you'd never give in to me. I saw your strength the moment you arrived: its grace: its beauty. I fell in love with it. I desired it - not for myself, but for its ability to release me from this guilt.

ALICE: Let me release you, Fletcher Christian. I will make you whole again.

FLETCHER: You will forgive me my crime?

Usage of Soul in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

"Barbara replied, 'Two make darkness. Three lighten all the world.' It was her way of introducing him to her belief in the Holy Trinity. Her father became enraged. He took her to the local magistrate. For the sake of her pagan soul, he had her tortured. After much suffering, her own father beheaded her."

"That's awful," said Indiana. "What does it have to do with cherry branches?"

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might calm one's sense of unease depending on your outlook

We need only refer to nineteenth century French literature to confirm this. According to Anatole France, Saint Paphnutius was destroyed by a look. Struck by the sight of Thais on stage, as she played the role of pure-hearted Polyxena, lifting the curtain with her white arm, pride and resignation in her violet eyes, the hermit monk, sent to save the whore from her dissipation, grew so infatuated with her image, learning later she was on her death bed, surrounded by her fellow nuns, he begged her petulantly not to die, rejecting Heaven, as she rose, moments before her final breath, to proclaim a vision of God with such rapture in her eyes, it held for poor Paphnutius the profound emptiness of his own soul. He turned into a vampire. That is the power of a look.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's sense of discomfort depending on your outlook

It must be easy for men like Jeff and Matt to get rid of love. To move on. Their torches must be tiny. I couldn't do it. I would burn for love brighter than a billion arrows. I would rip this rubber shell right off my soul. But I can't do it on a chance. It's too risky.
