Sword, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to contemplate the idea of augmenting his lofty Fiction Corpus with his best fiction book yet; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the feasibility of exploiting English as everyone's second language. I do reject the enfeebling tactics by which English is taught.Pointer

Upgrading a person's adroitness with a language isn't like developing a more accurate map. A language - a living language - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A language can not be detached from the shared logic of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A worthy instructor has to have a strategy for introducing it; the discerning pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written language of various size and consistency. They can contain everything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of narrative fiction. I suffered many a sleepless night creating my "unimpressive" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have diagnosed them, reshaping them - not merely to teach the English language but to defend the human soul, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Sword

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word sword in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word sword, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word sword is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Sword in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

When the press began to say that Jesus's Confederation was based on Cathedral Island, Jesus did nothing to dispute it. The error was built on already existing confusion; Jesus didn't need to add to it. Besides, anyone who cared knew that Jesus had blocked off Sand Island, not the territory around the Cathedral. Nevertheless, the error stood. Your father liked to indulge it. Using a sawed-off bed-knob as a mace, Jesus wielded it the way field commanders of the Old Republic had once deployed their troops: by swinging it forward, left and right, always with a firm flick of the wrist, like the parish priest or bishop who blesses his congregation with holy water. Jesus used it whenever his officers met with him to discuss further operations. Inside the sacristy of the Blessed Virgin Mary's church, they would come to look at their biggest map, which had all of their troop positions marked. They kept it locked in a cupboard with other sensitive information, and, when they met, Jesus used his mace to point things out; he would bang the table with it. Jesus's men soon began to call him 'Bishop.' Your father had chosen the mace for its ancient distinction (Jesus felt like the primeval warrior), but the truth was (as Jesus seemed to remember it from his father's books) that the mace had indeed been carried into battle by medieval bishops, who had been barred from the use of swords for some ecclesiastical reason. Anyway, the name was apt. Jesus became the Bishop of Cathedral Island, leader of Confederate troops fighting for truth. Your father embraced his new surname, particularly because it captured his spiritual leadership, which he consciously, though somewhat erratically, pursued. The word was ancient. Most importantly of all, it punctuated his separate identity, the superiority of his office, the remoteness of his character, and, most unnervingly of all, Jesus's growing detachment.

Verse 474 from the chapter called Arms

When the terrorists invaded Poland, they proved just as practical as the Germans. They brought machine guns, grenades, mortars, and assault rifles. They brought swords for beheading hostages, not for any romantic reason, but because they wouldn't have to waste ammunition that way (they didn't bring enough of it). In fact, they didn't bring anything with them from space: that would've been impossible. They had to buy everything they needed on location. In Poland, in the city of Wroclaw, one of their main suppliers happened to be none other than Baron Cohen-Krupnik, the man who, once upon a time, had sold Jesus silk stockings in bulk every Monday at eight o'clock in the morning. Heroin was a rather lucrative trade in peacetime; in times of war, however, arms were more like it.

Verse 9 from the chapter called Arms

Was there ever a cowardly man who faced his enemy with a sword in hand? Or was it greed that kept us clinging? How else could you capture a keep if not by slashing and bashing your way through its legions of archers? Did greed make us brave? Did the first man lust for battle before or after he tasted it? Was there valor in clubbing your enemies to death? Were there monkeys throwing rocks while a newborn king, having stepped out onto the plain, was proud of having fought like a man?

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Gog raced up to the beast's ear. It was large enough for him to enter. He jumped inside. It was not the shelter he imagined. The beast shook its head. Gog crashed into the soft walls. If they had been hard, he might have been crushed to death. All he had to do was hold Skin Smoother out in front of him. The sword pierced the flesh. Blood poured.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story set in ancient lands

Gog smiled. He said, "Don't tell me you still want to fight." The sword was pointed back at his throat. Skin Smoother smashed into it. This time, the blade bent into a right angle.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a frank discussion of where the gods are located

"You are the jewel of our race," he told the champion of the west. "May the Bhag Indra bless you. May the Bhag Mithra be with you. Take our people south. Conquer the towns of the two rivers [i.e., the Tigris and Euphrates]. Go to the holy mountain, the Harrah Berezati. Offer up our swords to the holy host."

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man with a sharp sword

Gog was outpaced. The Greek ship grew tiny on the horizon. The sea went dark. Gog became exhausted. He feared for his life. The waves threatened to bury him. All of a sudden, he found firm ground. It was solid, but slippery. Gog thought, "It's not just slippery. It's moving."

He glimpsed a body of scales bulging from the water. He couldn't believe his eyes. In a moment, the head of a gigantic serpent rose in front of him. Its maw was the size of a king's wagon.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a sharp sword

The second bloom was larger. It was forged into a sickle sword. It was made for deflection and blocking. Gog gave this to his consort, called Magog. It represented the Bhag Mithra, the keeper of the light, whom Magog personified on earth.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a crazy kind of guy
