System, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's thinking about the notion of supplementing his ordinary Fiction Corpus with a history of new fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the viability of upholding English as a global standard. I don't believe in the uninspiring modus operandi by which English is taught.Pointer

Strengthening a person's skill with a language isn't like developing a safer match. A language - a living language - is not merely a tool that you can teach yourself to use with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue can not be fractured from the philosophical currents of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. A worthy instructor has to find a way to introduce it; the discerning student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a specific corpus, a set of written language of various scope and consistency. A corpus can include anything from a book about literature to some truly interesting stories. I suffered many a sleepless night forging my "lofty" Fiction Corpus to form a special class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have classified them, reframing them - not simply to teach a language but to reveal the human spirit, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word System

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word system in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word system, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word system is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of System in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Then the big one came: the one that made it all possible: the people who put the first man on Mars: the company that financed the first expedition: Yariba Corporation, based in Tokyo. They sent three vice-presidents! Then the chairman of the board! Then all Class-A stockholders got a free trip. They patted themselves on the back. The news organizations took a group photo. Then they announced their largest endeavor yet: an integrated power and irrigation system for the entire planet. It took years, but they did it. They bought materials and fuel, diamonds and robots. They made contracts. They traded companies with other Martian conglomerates, and, finally, under contract with SIS (Secure Interplanetary Shipping), by the license of the United Nations Organization, Yariba Corporation transported the first nuclear bomb to Mars.

Verse 7 from the chapter called Childhood

I know the lure of success. I feel the pressures of domination. That farmer who sows rye in every field is not a victim. Nor is he some kind of scab. He is a player in a game with no teams, and he deserves no one's pity or awe or respect any more than the rest of us do. Your father always had to win. He would go and cry if he lost - every time. Once, your great-grandfather held a race for the boys and girls. Jesus was distracted for some reason; he missed the starting gun. His first reaction, unfortunately, was to complain. Realizing that the race had already started and wasn't going to be stopped, Jesus went for it. He went as fast as a young boy could, just so he wouldn't have to bear the shame of coming in dead last. He was beaten by a girl. She received first prize and Jesus received second. He was infuriated. Second prize was obviously inferior - too inferior. First prize was an electronic game system. Second prize was a fancy pencil sharpener. Jesus went and cried, not realizing that the prizes were personal: they were designated. Nor did he realize that the girl's family was rich, and his family was, in comparison, very poor.

Verse 150 from the chapter called Childhood

"Sacha has been a friend of mine since childhood. I remember when we were eight years old," she said, "and he gave me his shoes." She laughed. "He gave me his shoes! They were really expensive. They were those very fashionable athletic shoes that all the boys wanted - 'Pneuma's they were called. My father wouldn't buy them for me because he said little girls shouldn't wear shoes like that. They were full of air. They had some kind of special air chamber system in the sole. That was a bunch of baloney, but they were supposed to make you jump higher. Anyway, Sacha let me wear his shoes one day when we were playing soccer on the Mall. And you know what? I tore them," she said, giddily rolling her head about. "I tore his brand-new shoes - oh, it was so awful! The special air chamber system was ruined. I thought he was going to be so mad." She smiled. "He wasn't." She shook her head. "He wasn't mad at all."

Verse 692 from the chapter called Bohemia

Jesus's seat in the Presidium, with or without the rank of Brigadier General, had been guaranteed by the fact that so many people (that is, members of Jesus's Confederation) had contributed so much (that is, the rest of the laundered money from the vaults of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ginko) to Jesus's personal war chest, with which he had raised his private armored brigade of Lower Silesian riflemen, who were only Lower Silesian in name. Jesus had accepted volunteers from all across Europe: women and men who were drawn by Jesus's personality, who were talented, who didn't have anything against the Church, who desired glory and riches, power and the thrills of battle, who wanted to wage war against whatever the hell it was on Mars, be it Revolution or tyranny or misbegotten government, and who didn't want to taste the fact that they were fighting for oil interests as they gobbled up whatever the hell it was that they were going to have for themselves. Jesus knew what it was that they all wanted. They all wanted what everyone knew - or, at least, believed - that Mars had to offer: a large piece of the richest pie. They didn't realize that Mars had abandoned itself to the outer edge of the inner solar system for a very good reason (and the pie had long since cooled).

Verse 63 from the chapter called Vows

Perhaps someday that city will grow to the very edges of the Hellas plain, measuring the whole two thousand kilometers of the basin's diameter. It would be the greatest city in the solar system. Or, perhaps, the city will be completely abandoned, once the hydrosphere threatens it with flooding. It may depend on what you choose to do, my child. The future of Centropolis hangs in the balance - there is no doubt about it. The city's founders never imagined a day when the atmosphere would reach one thousand millibars, and yet, your great-great-grandfather, Hitler Panzer-Tank, was the first governor to go outside in the light of day without his suit and breathe normally with an oxygen tank.

Usage of System in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

ANDY: So am I part of the system or what?

NIKE: No, not at all: the system is subject to weather: and you're a weatherman like me. But here's the difference: you give it more respect than I do.

ANDY: Well, I can drink to that.

NIKE: To respect?

ANDY: Cheers.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 11, Talking Politics, Paragraphs 48-52

NIKE: Exactly: to be 'liberal' you have to be part of the system.

ANDY: So what am I? if I'm not a subscriber?

NIKE: You, my friend, are a simple harmonic oscillator.

ANDY: Oscillator? Is that some convoluted way of calling me a flip-flopper?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 11, Talking Politics, Paragraphs 41-44

They were able to use the defendant's argument against her, and turning their judgment on her - even though hers was not the burden of proof - they decided how lovely and just it would be to drown her defense to death by inundating their own decision with frivolous remarks. Mindful of nothing but their own supremacy, the opinion of the Supreme Court seems to be, without question, a comprehensive network of sweeping proclamations and inappropriate accusations, undeniably interspersed here and there with a ridiculous supposition and irrelevant predictions - all couched, unquestionably, in the most superfluous and grandiose verbiage - that serves irrefutably to obscure its own hollowness and its lack of any rational argument, which, thanks to the genius of our Federal system, has incontrovertibly worked a deep and scarring hardship on our tradition of jurisprudence.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 17, The Role of the Judicious Mind, Paragraph 3, Clauses 1-2

"There is a new order in the world," she said. "It is marked by freedom. Not rights - I don't mean freedom like liberty: that is something different. I mean power and opportunities. When we were young, our destinies were controlled by things bigger than us: by war, by systems; there were new technologies - these things were controlling the society, so even things like social movements were controlling us, the individuals - even though we didn't know it. And this was true for everybody: West, East, man, woman; these movements were migrations; they were political. It was different in the East: it was more obvious. It was harder. It was like living in suspension. But now: that world has reconciled itself: not only the systems, but the technologies. They are all there; they are all developed. They do not seem like they can really change things more than they have already changed them.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 30, Presenting Oneself to a Potential Husband, Paragraph 3

The subject of my latest vision - although I really should not call them visions: my experiences involve the entire sensual organ system. They are not limited to eyes or ears or the touch. They involve my entire organism, from the feeling of the ground underneath my feet, to the involuntary fancies of the mind's eyes.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Carmina shook her head. "I'm not going into the water." Ferrari found all the broken oars. When night fell, he lashed them together and crawled over the side. Holding onto the ladder, he slipped his makeshift raft into the sea. Carmina climbed aboard. Shoving off, Ferrari kicked his way toward land.

They dropped the matter. Life continued. Bei and Jing stopped hiding. They would kiss each other in front of everybody. Tae and Bo encountered them on their walks. "They're happy," Bo would say. "That's good." Jing was growing a belly. Bei went around calling herself the father.

"It's obviously Kong's child," said Tae.

Nobody cared what Lorenzo did. When a cherry tree was chopped down in the Bishop's orchard, nobody suspected him. "Who would do such a thing?" asked the concertmaster. Ferrari shrugged. He had his own business next to the Honorable Carmina's litter. Every time she came to the Bishop's palace to hear a concert, Ferrari escorted her home.

"I would be your servant," he whispered.

Ferrari might have walked away with his life. Instead, like a true Christian knight, he honored his commitment to his Lady. Breathlessly, Carmina was waiting. Together they crossed the mountains of Matera, shadowing the road south to Catanzaro. At port, they secured passage aboard a Venetian ship. The first mate claimed they were headed for Crete.

GREY GOOSE: What about the oral and maxillofacial surgeon? The computer information systems manager? You were nothing before me. I made you.

FLETCHER: Kokomo will have to wear a burqa for the rest of her life around here. This was a Sunday operation before he came and screwed it all up. Do you know why you kept getting looks in town? It wasn't what he did; it was what he said. He had everybody on Norfolk thinking you had hired the best piece of faffy this side of Hawai'i. Some of them thought that you were in on it - that you were behind it all.

GREY GOOSE: This is some kind of gratitude.

Usage of System in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

On the bridge the life support system was already running. Orbitz turned on a monitor. He took out a small keyboard and typed, "Marriott, are you monitoring the ship's systems?"

A response appeared on the screen. "Yes, Rishi."

"Is everything functioning correctly?" typed Orbitz.

"Yes."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The Amazon was not convinced. He wanted spies. He wanted somebody Orbitz could not resist. He asked for and received approval for an arousal profile. It determined that Orbitz's taste for the opposite sex tended towards the slighty exotic. His taste for men closely matched his own mostly human pedigree. Out of all Alliance staff members in the local database two scientists fit the profile perfectly. A human astrobiologist named Pfizer Microsoft and an astrolinguist of mostly Eridanian extraction pursuing a medical degree. Neither had according to their records any reason to be loyal to Orbitz. They had never met the man. The Amazon made sure. He first trotted Doctor Microsoft before a board of inquiry. The Astrazeneca listened as he vehemently denied being a Wiki-en. They said, "This is truth." Then the Amazon brought out the Eridanian. She had been born and raised in the Solar System. She had never visited her ancestral world. She was young. Innocent. Her skin beautifully tinged with blue. She said her name was Sara Lee.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

I wondered if she were right. Was it possible for there to be a difference between us? Were our generations so far apart? Were we not experiencing the same systems? Socialism, communism, capitalism, Christianity - were they not as powerful now as they ever were? Perhaps the influence was being overshadowed - by what? Our technologies were trite; our movements, nonexistent. What was my generation doing? Treading water? I took a puff of marijuana. It didn't matter. It was getting late.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's nerves depending on your outlook

People think they know me. They don't know me. Either way, you know, they have an opinion about me. Either I'm a hero or I'm a killer. Just a cold-blooded killer that manipulated the system. That's the stuff they hear, you know. They don't know the facts. I know the facts. I'm the one who killed my sister. I'm the one who has to live with it. I killed a lot of people. Do I feel sorry? I don't know. Should I feel sorry? I don't think so. That's getting into it. I should start at the beginning.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story without a lot of knives coming straight out of Roman mythology

By the time Captain Orbitz returned to Alliance headquarters in the Solar System two things had happened. First his DNA was found at a raided underground Wiki-en meeting place on Mars. Second and more importantly the longest-serving courier in Alliance history with a record 32 trips across branes was officially declared lost. He entered a singularity in the Cygnus Arm and two hundred fifty milliarc-seconds later his ship's quantum entangler had yet to respond. There were no sightings of him at any manned transit points in either Alliance or Alliance-friendly territory. No wreckage was found. The man like so many interstellar travelers before him had simply vanished into the two-dimensional fracas known as inter-brane space. This made Orbitz not technically the oldest man in the Orion Arm but its first born citizen. His long dead mother had given birth to him thousands of years ago. It made him a celebrity.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
