Weight, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to consider the feasibility of reinforcing his voluminous Fiction Corpus with some really fictional short stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the prospect of utilizing English as an international language for the world. I do challenge the ordinary blueprint with which English is taught.Pointer

Strengthening a person's mastery of a language isn't like bringing about a stronger bit of iron. A language - a spoken language - isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to wield with a greater amount of precision. A shared tongue can not be disentangled from the shared logic of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. A good teacher has to find a method of introducing it; the bravest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written works of various scope and consistency. A corpus may include everything from a book about literature to an entire set of really gay fiction stories. I watched many moons pass creating my "mammoth" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drafted a million words and I have enumerated them, reshaping them - not just to teach an American tongue but to promote the human spirit, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Weight

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word weight in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word weight, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word weight is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Weight in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Jesus was fully capable of outfitting a brigade, but, if he did that, then he couldn't afford to buy enough tickets for all of his men - at least, not enough to gain a reasonable weight ceiling. The Vatican wasn't going to be of much help; if Panzer-Tank had no intention of donating tickets, then the Church was only going to be able to afford a few hundred - not the thousands that Jesus would need. There had to be some kind of solution.

Verse 221 from the chapter called Security

"My grandfather," said Sapper, "for the past eighteen years of his life, has had only one car: his ancient Polish Fiat, which, when it was new, had, at most, perhaps nineteen horsepower. Now that it's come of age, as we like to say, its taste for the road has significantly dulled. About two years ago, I was given permission to drive it for the very first and last time. Its performance was tenuous but, understanding its limited capacity, quite admirable, and, combined with my youthful zeal, we took a left curve so fast, we teetered. We were not in danger of tipping over, but we teetered: on those two, decimeter-length wheels on the driver's side. We were saved, undoubtedly, by my grandfather's great weight, sitting as he was in the passenger seat. I tried to convince him that my understanding of physics and automotive safety was impeccable; my left turn was not the result of negligence, but merely my honest attempt at illustrating the great importance of a healthy diet. My grandfather was not amused. From that day forth, I've never been allowed to drive, in spite of the greatly terrifying fact that my grandfather is completely blind in one eye and almost blind in the other. When your grandmother called us and told us that your mother was dead - may she rest in peace - she told us that the funeral was the very next day, at eleven o'clock in the morning. So we left: immediately: at five o'clock in the afternoon, two hours before sunset, in the middle of heavy rain, right before your grandmother tried to reach us to inform us that your mother's funeral was actually postponed till Monday!"

"And I still missed it," said Jesus.

Verses 210-211 from the chapter called Adolescence

It read: COUNTRY OF BIRTH: Poland; COMPLEXION: blank; COLOR OF EYES: blank; COLOR OF HAIR: blank; HEIGHT: five FEET, zero INCHES; WEIGHT: blank POUNDS; VISIBLE DISTINCTIVE MARKS: blank; MARITAL STATUS: single. I CERTIFY THAT THE DESCRIPTION ABOVE GIVEN IS TRUE, AND THAT THE PHOTOGRAPH AFFIXED HERETO IS A LIKENESS OF ME. Signed, blank.

Verse 4 from the chapter called Adolescence

But tickets were something else; tickets were very expensive. One first-class ticket to Mars, which came with a very nice weight ceiling, was capable of being bought only by the most successful and resolute of non-Capitalists. Third-class tickets were, for most people, a stretch of the imagination. Fifth-class tickets were something for the moderately affluent and highly adventurous, while sixth-class tickets and seventh-class tickets, with their weight ceilings almost down to the floor, were, respectively, for the out-of-luck and psychotic. Those passengers could bring along, at most, two packs of playing cards.

Verse 220 from the chapter called Security

"Thank God," he said.

"New sidearm?" I asked.

"Yeah," he said.

"Do you mind?"

"No, not at all."

He gave me the weapon.

"Good weight," I said. The conductor nodded.

Usage of Weight in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

But let me remind you: this does not mean we are incapable of providing spiritual guidance, something which is often neglected, if not completely ignored, but which cannot be withheld from children of any age, however old or tender they be. As the recently matured, we are in the best position to provide such leadership, and we must maintain an active interest in our roles. Forgive me for reminding you, but I do so mostly for my own sake, since I regret my physical distance from my ward. It is very debilitating. I am one of those people who must see things in order to appreciate their need. I fear that I lack the sort of maternal clairvoyance for which many women are renowned, like our mother, for example. But perhaps a woman needs her own children, so I retain hope. At any rate, I do not enjoy the physical proximity you share with Fabric. So I rely on you, and, for the time being, you must bear the double weight of our responsibilities.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 34, Propogating a Concept of Duty, Paragraph 2

I let them simmer: these thoughts, these accusations and questions; I keep them warm to prevent them from congealing; I do not want them to harden my heart, but I cannot be rid of them; so from that day forth I've kept them under the weight of daily existence, allowing them to run their course, but pressing them down and preserving them with brine - my own salty solution that softens them down and with which they slowly drain away, one by one, as I consider each in turn; but they are part of a stream and come returning like the rain cloud on a rainy day, when the mind must turn to musing.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

It trained one of its nostrils on the man. It was enough to make Gog flutter like a pennant. Wads of snot blasted into him. It made him heavy. His arms strained under the weight. The dragon blew harder. Gog held on. With each snort, the man grew stiffer. The dragon stopped trying. It was out of breath.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a frank discussion of earth's cruelty

As the men crossed, one of his favorite pages, a boy named Mangone, was pushed by the current to high water. Instinctively, Sforza rode out to save him. His horse slipped. In an instant, underneath the weight of Sforza's heavy armor, the loins of his horse gave way. Both man and beast were delivered into the arms of the cold current.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story about a young man who tries to be manly

The woman's gastrocnemius bulged. With the humble soleus, it pulled her heel: oh splendid tuber! growth that takes the brunt of our standing, balancing our attempts at uprightness, seed from which blossoms man, which the serpent bites, protect yourself from harm; may we lift you as you walk: that you might crush the serpent. May all our heels be protected. May they not be spoiled by weight. May they glide across earth fearing no evil, no serpents, no stones to bash them. May they be as beautiful as that woman's heel, flying as it was across the road of my dream, casting small, delicate shadows.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring religious symbols

Her breasts were bared. She wasn't wearing a tunic. Only the flimsy fabric of a friar's scapular covered the length of her body beneath her cloak. With her arms stretched back, two nodules of beautiful fat bulged from beyond her hems, settling under their own weight like egg white beaten to a soft peak, waiting to be folded into batter. The satin of her scapular suddenly sashayed across her nipples. It fell against the side of one breast. It squeezed itself into her cleavage. Pluck, I begged quietly to myself, the obnoxious apron out.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring a frank discussion of a cloak

Her face was older, thought Ferrari. She had gained weight. Her breasts were bottoming out with age. A small scar graced her upper lip. If anything, she was even more beautiful than he remembered. Her nipples were thick like short cinnamon sticks. There was no doubt they would taste just as sweet.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring a man who understood capitalism

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: Oh, marriage! Where would man be without thy warm bondage? Those who fear the rope will never know the pleasure of being tied up: of pushing with all one's might only to stand still. It is a perverse joy, indeed, to take the plunge through the trapdoor: to hear one's soul snapping in two, pushing one's heart into one's throat: to say the words, 'I do.' To wed and then to bed - how old-fashioned an order! One cannot help but desire permanence in such an ever-changing world. To oppose it, lashed to a rock, feeling its weight crush one's spirit, may be a Promethean punishment best reserved for the noble. It is no wonder that only the force of custom and law kept so many together for so long. Matrimony is not for the faint of heart. So watch out, you concubines and concubinaries - you cohabitants and live-in friends: both cataracts and calm pools await you, but no peace at that river's end: just the wide, gaping maw of dissoluteness and abandon: the ocean of human desire, with nothing to do but sink. So swim home, like salmon, and enjoy rest: the comfort you get from being tied up. My prayers were answered: I am a man again - and soon to be more: a husband. Wish me luck, for the night is still young, and many acts of husbandry await me.

Usage of Weight in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I discovered a beautiful pavilion. Completely abandoned. Pristine toilet followed pristine toilet. I commenced spewing all over. Grunting and panting through the intervals. I shat half my body weight before I heard somebody come inside. This person was going from toilet to toilet. Opening every door. I was afraid my gut wasn't the only thing about to be liquidated. My unseen nemesis banged on my stall. I calmly ignored it. I dispensed half a roll of paper. I cleaned everything up. I don't remember if I flushed. When I opened the door the largest woman I have ever seen snarled at me and started shouting. I have no idea what she was saying. It sounded like a lot. She followed me out of the pavilion and halfway back to the stadium. I was sure if I didn't lose myself in the crowd she would find me and have me killed. That was the end of my trip.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
