Opportunity, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's studying the feasibility of reinforcing his run-of-the-mill Fiction Corpus with a treatise on fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the concept of upholding English as an international standard. I don't regard highly the altogether plodding fashion in which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Boosting a person's skillfulness with a language isn't like promoting a more incorruptible banknote. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A spoken language cannot be dissected from the professed knowledge of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A capable instructor must find a way to introduce it; the perceptive student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a particular corpus, a set of written language of various scope and consistency. They could include anything from a book about literature to an entire set of drama plays. I developed my "remarkable" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have pieced together a million words and I have indexed them, reframing them - not just to teach English vocabulary but to defend the human soul, and to provoke that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Europe, the summer of 2011. Twelve countries. 46 days. One car. One tent. One man. One woman he's just met.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Opportunity

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word opportunity in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word opportunity, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word opportunity is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Opportunity in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Several weeks after the procurator dropped his case, an old friend of Jesus's turned up dead. Baron Cohen-Krupnik had been renting an apartment under an assumed name. If the landlord had known his client's documents were false, he might have informed SECURITA about the whole situation. The landlord was an old friend of Stalin's and anyone who knew Stalin or anyone else actively involved in the Confederation was aware of the ever-pressing need to be on the lookout for suspicious things. As it was, the opportunity was lost. It wasn't till poor Baron was found dead that the landlord even mentioned it.

"How did you find him?" asked Jesus.

Verses 206-207 from the chapter called Security

Then, in Jesus's bedroom, we played our favorite game, blind man's buff. It was Sapper's idea; Sapper always wanted to play it. At the time, it was generally known as the best opportunity for grabbing girls, but Sapper's excitement was unparalleled. Your father liked it too: he liked to fall on top of girls when he caught them. He said that on top of them was the only way he could recognize girls blindfolded. We were devils, but ladies like devils. Fathers, on the other hand, do not - and Sapper got your father in trouble one time.

Verse 205 from the chapter called Childhood

Butt-pressing was all good and fun, but Jesus was hungry for more. Turning onto his back, he pressed his whole body against Zoe's. She pressed back. Then, wiggling around, she gave Jesus what seemed like the perfect opportunity to roll onto his right side. He did it! They were both facing the same direction! Unfortunately, Jesus lacked either the imagination or the experience to let his arms fall in strategic places. They were left in the most uncomfortable and inconvenient areas: underneath his torso in the first case (his right arm), and too close to Zoe's back in the other, more important one. More wiggling would be necessary before his left arm were ready to strike.

Verse 630 from the chapter called Security

When the police, investigating the recent discovery of two illegally buried bodies in the local cemetery, came to his dead grandmother's apartment, they asked for Jesus's papers. He gave them his brand new American passport (with residency visa) and said nothing. When they asked him a question - they asked, "With whom are you living here?" - Jesus shook his head. He refused to answer any and all questions. One of the policemen decided to arrest him right then and there - on the spot - and so his partner decided to search the immediate surroundings, which, thanks to the apartment's size, meant the whole thing - but they didn't find anything: there was nothing there to find. When they threw him into a large jail cell with four beds, Jesus realized that the room was bigger than his own. He decided he would do some push-ups and sit-ups and some calisthenics. After he did them, he decided he was out of shape. This was a perfect opportunity to get back into shape. He was the only one there. Nobody was going to bother him.

Verse 158 from the chapter called Security

SECURITA was corporate. Its chief executive officer was 'commander-in-chief.' Its board of directors included, as a result of the new contract, several deputies from Parliament who belonged to the ruling party. Regional and local operations were mostly controlled by independent entrepreneurs. SECURITA was, in essence, a franchise, this being the secret of its great success. Rich Capitalists were given the opportunity to lead armed men - it was thrilling: a power trip which most Capitalists found very rewarding, both financially and psychologically. It was racketeering in legalized form.

Jesus's plan was two-fold.

Usage of Opportunity in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

My imagination was so enthusiastic that before long my mind was completely exhausted from its pandering. But you know, my sister, this feeling has nothing to do with sexual arousal. The two are quite distinct. Now, as you can imagine, in the days before Albert's collapse, there was more than one opportunity for me to be sexual aroused. In fact, the Piano Kiss was only the crowning moment in a series of sexually stimulating encounters. And I confess: Indiana was making me very aroused. But throughout all that time, I suffered only one inflammation of the loins. And there was nothing sexual about it. Nor was there even a physical body present.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 7

At least I hope to have reminded you of the circumstances under which your relationship with the 'Romaniac' began. It has been a long relationship, but oftentimes quiet and distant, and only recently, I gather, have you had the opportunity to develop it seriously. But I never doubted that it would be provocative: everything about that woman is that way, whether it be innocent or not, and your confessions to me have only piqued an already heightened interest.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 1, Genital Pain as a Result of Physical Trauma, Paragraph 8, Clauses 7-10

Now failing every other opportunity, a young maiden still had one last chance to see her future husband. Beginning on the thirteenth of December, on the feast day of Santa Lucia, the young woman could take one bite of an apple everyday, making sure that on Christmas Eve, she would take the very last bite, and then, with luck, she would see her future husband.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 21, Giving and Receiving a Look, Paragraph 1, Clauses 4-6

Thank God we have each other; through you I can know myself better, and I have gained what I believe to be an acute understanding of your own condition. I have had a singular opportunity: to observe objectively from a distance not only the machinery of an organism, but the habits and workings of an intellect that bear a striking resemblance to my own.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 8, Loneliness, Paragraph 3, Clauses 1-2

Then Indiana disappeared, although persistence of vision - that is, more accurately, persistence of imagination convinced me that she hadn't moved, and, although she was, in fact, gone, I was still savoring the picture; but she was gone, and, with a moment of clarity, I almost collected myself; but the opportunity passed: now I was wondering at the vision, at my luck for having witnessed it, and I continued standing there incredulous for a moment - until finally, I was merely waiting, unconsciously hoping for more.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 9, Intoxication, Paragraph 7

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

"She says she's harboring a woman and her daughter. They're on the run from the woman's husband. She thought you were sent to find them. She panicked. They were staying in Shaq's room. The blackout was supposed to give her an opportunity to stow them on one of the access towers at the north pole. She wants me to go there now and move them. I told her it's silly. It's better to leave them where they are."

The netball league became very popular. Nyota signed up. Purse was instructed to join. He brought with him some secretaries. Junior waited for Nyota to inform him of the opportunity. He pretended to be mildly interested. He let her talk him into it.

Everything was going smoothly until Davis showed up. "You're not an employee," said Junior.

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring the strength of man

Tae ran to his tent. He grabbed a spear he had fashioned in case of animal attack. He followed the bank. He encountered a forest. Roots stretched over the ground. Branches slapped him in the face. Tae was forced to slow down. He feared the worst. There was no telling how far Bo would go. "Stay alive," he kept repeating to himself. "I'm coming."

In one photograph, she had her arm around Harry Connick Myklebust's wife, Debbie. "She's got long arms," thought Junior. "I like that." He realized this was a golden opportunity. If she saw the Myklebusts socially, Junior could finagle his way into her company. All he had to do was make friends with Harry Connick.

"If you must know, I didn't see eye to eye with Bei."

Tae giggled. He said, "Neither do the men."

"You are awful. You're keeping me from my planting."

Tae stopped Bo. He held her by the arm. He said, "There is no work without rest." She turned to face him. Tae gazed into her eyes. "Maybe we can do both together."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

GREY GOOSE: Every time you had her sweet fish sauce underneath your fingernails-

FLETCHER: You couldn't help but think: wouldn't it be lovely?

GREY GOOSE: We understand.

FLETCHER: We want it ourselves.

GREY GOOSE: It's only natural.

FLETCHER: Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

GREY GOOSE: We can't wait to see you do it.

MS. JACKSON: I'm not going to have sex with my cook!

– ACT I, lines 1152-1159

MS. JACKSON: I've been very happy with your service. You've become absolutely indispensable to this venture. Should you choose to continue with me far into the future, I would be most grateful. I already consider you a part of the family. If you should ever have the desire and the opportunity and the willingness to formalize that relationship - sacramentally speaking - I mean that in the fullest sense of the term - even if that requires a certain individual to confirm himself into the Catholic faith - I want you to know that you would enjoy my full support. I mean, namely, that, if one should be so lucky to have you for - I mean, if I should be so lucky to have - that is, I suspect you would find me a better mother-in-law than you have an employer. It's not that I pry. I've realized that - I'm not completely off the mark, am I?

KOKOMO: No. I simply never imagined I was so-

MS. JACKSON: Clearly it took me a while to - anyway: that's that.

KOKOMO: Thank you.

MS. JACKSON: It's incredible how much you remind me of me when I was your age. I too was filled with confidence. My family recognized my strength and valued it. I consider it my duty to strengthen others. May I confide in you?

KOKOMO: Yes.

MS. JACKSON: What I want to tell you isn't easy for me to describe. You have a right to know. I became pregnant with Fletcher before I was married. It took pressure, if not outright coercion, before Grey Goose finally agreed to wed - even though he had always talked about it as if it were a sure thing. I've never understood why it had to be like that, but I feel it's been at the root of most of the problems we've had. I just wanted you to know so that you could be careful.

KOKOMO: Thank you. I can't imagine how hard it must have been.

MS. JACKSON: Indeed. You see how long the pain can last. Be wary, child. Do not commit the same mistake I did.

KOKOMO: I won't.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
