Silence, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal dismisses the possibility of enhancing his sizeable Fiction Corpus with yet another fiction book; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the viability of harnessing English as everyone's second language. I don't have faith in the debilitating process by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Refining a person's proficiency with a language isn't like bringing about a stronger mast. A language - a common language - isn't just an instrument that you can teach yourself to use with a greater amount of precision. A living language can not be fractured from the prevailing culture of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching people to recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A good teacher must find a method of introducing it; the bravest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a specific corpus, a body of written works of various size and consistency. This corpus may contain everything from a book about literature to some akbar birbal stories translated into modern English. I burnt many candles laboring on my "unimpressive" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have constructed a million words and I have scrutinized them, reformulating them - not merely to teach an American tongue but to promote the human soul, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Silence

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word silence in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word silence, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word silence is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Silence in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"Oh," said the teacher, "that's very nice, but which hospital?"

"I don't know," said your father.

"You don't know?" said his teacher.

"I can't pronounce it," said your father, smiling very nervously.

"Oh," said the teacher. "Well, that's alright: Poland." There was a moment of silence before she went to the next person, who said, of course, "Bethesda."

It was very embarrassing. I was mad at your father for having to be so honest.

Verses 103-108 from the chapter called Childhood

On our way to the cemetery, the now sixteen-year-old Sapper broke the silence.

Verse 199 from the chapter called Adolescence

We walked. Neither of us talked for a while. Then, after halting in silence for a moment, I said, "Won't your fiancé miss you this morning?"

Verse 557 from the chapter called Bohemia

For thirty-three hours and a half, we proceeded slowly (in fact, as slowly as possible) from the town square to St. Hedwig's Basilica, where we stripped ourselves to the waist, took off our shoes, and prostrated ourselves in silence. When the Master decided, he began to whip us. (The Master was elected; we chose the weakest man among us). When the Master started whipping, we began chanting the Stabat Mater. Assuming a position which indicated for what kind of sin we wished to atone, we would wait for the Master to heal us. The murderer was supposed to lie on his face - thankfully, none of us did that. The adulterer lay on his back; perjurers, on their sides, holding up three fingers; disobedient children, with their asses up in the air; people who didn't go to church on Sunday, in a crab; corrupt officials, holding up one leg, exposing their genitals. Then, we would rise, form a circle, and beat ourselves, singing songs of praise to the Savior, who endured much worse for the sake of our sins. We would walk, with banners and crosses held before us. In the nighttime, we held lanterns - all the while singing songs and beating ourselves with whips. (Jesus bought his in a sex shop.)

Verse 479 from the chapter called Adolescence

The Krupnik was being very polite, considering Jesus's incommodiousness. Not wanting his precarious position suddenly to be altered, or his luck (as he felt it, scant luck) to run out, Jesus decided not to ask any more questions. With nothing coming from the other side, we drove in silence. Turning onto Millennium Bridge, we crossed the river. Passing by the train tracks and the road to the airport, we swung around the industrial parks and found ourselves on the southern side. Going down the Avenue of the Home Army, we didn't turn back towards the city until we reached the road to Cracow.

Verse 126 from the chapter called Arms

Usage of Silence in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Knowing that Indiana would ask: why the filthy face? I was hoping I could think of some funny story to cheer her up. But when she did ask me, there was no funny story. Instead, I felt foolish. I told her I was closing the fireplace: someone had forgotten to close the flue, and: "I sneezed." She told me to go wash my face. She was ready to insist, but we were already standing by the open door. We left, and that's how we drove home: one black face, one red face. There was very little conversation. We entered the car in silence and that's how it remained. I was pretty sure an explanation was coming at some point, so I wasn't going to fish for it. But I was hoping it would come in the car - because that way, one can always concentrate on the road. I have very little patience for grief, whether it be warranted or not.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 30, Presenting Oneself to a Potential Husband, Paragraph 19

That is a very heavy price to pay, and I would never multiply the cost." When I finished, I was looking down at the table. Macy was apologetic: he said that he was sorry, that he didn't mean for that subject to come up; he was at fault, and so he apologized. There was a long silence; maybe Macy was waiting for me to forgive him. Instead, the food came, and thus we began to eat.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 13, Bringing Up a Delicate Subject, Paragraph 7, Clauses 8-13

They must have been police or something, but it didn't matter: suddenly, I could see Nike in the same position: on his knees in supplication, with his hands pressed together as if in prayer. But this time: his head was bowed; he was untouched; and, there was nobody around him. I saw him from far away. Directly in front of me, in the corner of my vision, was Christian's face. He was staring at me. "Was this the man who raped you?" he asked. Then a voice whispered, "No." Christian kept looking at me. "Was he a friend of the man who raped you?" But there was silence. "Was he there when it happened?" Again, silence. "Alright," said Christian, "you can go now." So I turned away.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 7, Surprising Oneself, Paragraph 5

"Number two, step forward." The voice came from beyond the lights - "step back, please" - an ominous voice being filtered by loudspeakers. Then, they fell silent. They were standing there in silence for a long time. Nike wasn't sure what was happening. He was growing uncomfortable. "Number five, step forward, please." Nike was wondering what the procedure was. "Thank you. Step back." He wondered who was beyond those lights. "Number four, step forward, please." Number four stepped forward. He wondered who was looking at him: who could see him from beyond those lights? "Step back, please." He wondered whether she could see him. "Step back, please - thank you."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 7, Surprising Oneself, Paragraph 3

By the time Luke woke me, we were late for the party. I had no time left to prepare - I mean, mentally - and Luke was of little help; he was cluttering up my mind with his needless talk. We could've made our way up Prospect Street in silence; the ten or so blocks would've cleared my mind. But I was being rushed - of course we were late and had to hurry; I was following Luke, trying not to pay attention - suddenly there we were, fast approaching that heavy door of Nike's house - I hardly had time to feel my usual fear of entering parties. The door was opened; I was inside, greeted by a general cry; I saw Macy near a corner smiling, but "Ah, Nike!" was directly in front, his embrace all but smothering.

Usage of Silence in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

That night Proctor was woken by a noise. He came downstairs to find an open window. The curtains were blowing in the wind. He heard the sound of a table being nudged along the floor. He drew his gun. With bated breath he inched towards the nearest light switch. He flipped it on. A raccoon jerked its head. Its eyes glowing. Proctor shut the light. He waited in silence for what seemed like hours. There was no one.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a dead body put in a weird position

On my second day at the school I took the birds out of the furnace. If I was going to sit alone again I didn't want to be bothered. I sat in silence. I found the headman in the evening and asked him again if the villagers knew I had come. He nodded his head and walked away. I figured it didn't matter to me if anybody came. Either way I would get paid.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes the reality of this world no matter where you live

Jessica gave a devilish look. "If your husband wasn't coming?" she asked.

Sarah looked away. Her silence made Jessica burst into laughter.

I went to the stables after dinner. Jeff was there grooming the horses. I asked him why he was going after a married woman.

– from “A Magnum Condom,” a bedtime story to teach children about adult stuff that may or may not work

Indiana giggled. It was nice to hear her laugh. We rode in silence for a few minutes. Indiana told me what the doctors said. It wasn't good. The word 'inoperable' was mentioned. I cried. Indiana told me she was sorry. I chuckled through my tears.

"Why are you apologizing?"

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might help overcome one's sense of unease depending on your outlook

The creeping silence of the crowded room finally brought Pfizer back to his senses. He faced forward and sat up straight in his flex-form chair. "No," he said. "It's Microsoft, by the way."

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
