High, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's debating the concept of supplementing his sizeable Fiction Corpus with some really contemporary realistic fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the idea of promulgating English as a universal standard. I do reject the pedantic steps through which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Strengthening one's handiness with a language isn't like pioneering a wider canal. A language - a spoken language - is not merely a tool that you can teach yourself to wield with greater amounts of precision. A shared language can not be bisected from the prevailing culture of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A capable teacher must create a strategy for introducing it; the perceptive student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of writing of varying scope and consistency. Such a corpus may contain anything from a book about literature to some real romance fiction. I lost many a night developing my "sensational" Fiction Corpus to form a special type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have reduced them, reshaping them - not just to teach an American language but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

By the end of my first week in Europe in 2011, I had bought a car and out of the blue had met the woman who would join me on a 6,000 mile trek across the European continent, sharing the beat-up car that I had bought and the one small tent from Walmart that I had brought along with me on my flight.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word High

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word high in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word high, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word high is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of High in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"I want solid-fuel tactical missile systems, one hundred and fifty-five millimeter howitzers, fire-control computers, multiple-rocket launchers, weapons platforms, five armored personnel carriers, five tanks, motorcycles, and high-frequency radio equipment."

"Anything else?"

Verses 56-57 from the chapter called Vows

Procurators' enthusiasm notwithstanding, there was serious cause for alarm. The estimate - and that's all it was - that there were about five thousand current or former Russian agents in Poland, thirty of whom were supposed to have high-level government positions, was troublesome enough. It was much worse when Western governments were involved.

Verse 32 from the chapter called Vows

It was under these circumstances that the national government extended and modified substantially its contract with SECURITA. The security firm had been hired by the Ministry of Defense to supplement its border guard, which, when terrorists appeared in Germany, was deployed along Poland's western frontier by adding units withdrawn from the southwestern border shared with the Czech Republic. This move had been severely criticized and very much resented by most people not in charge of national security, but, considering that terrorists and terrorism were responsible (or, at least, held responsible) for just about everything that happened, there wasn't much that anyone could do to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this new and startling development (which was the privatization of national defense) was not necessary or, at least, justified. Private security firms had always been popular among the elite - why shouldn't national governments be able to take advantage of their highly trained professionals? especially since these were difficult times - made even more difficult by coal trafficking.

Verse 26 from the chapter called Security

"Fuck off, guys!" We ran - the way we used to run when Moochka was mad: with our knees up high and our shoulders back, so nobody could shoot us in the ass (which was known to happen, especially in certain parts of Treblinka).

Verse 340 from the chapter called Adolescence

We were taken to the second floor. In the foyer, I happened to notice a clock that was hanging on the wall. It said, at the very bottom, in cursive writing: 'High-Class Quartz Clock.' Decorated with fabric flowers and machine-pressed forms made of a kind of copper alloy, it was, at best, a dubious claim. The hands didn't even move; either a new battery was needed, or the clock simply didn't work. He must've taken it from the trash, I thought. I imagined him doing it.

Verse 285 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of High in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

They were so careful as to seem casual. But they were not casual. They were deliberate. They placed me. They put me so high, so very high: right against her hip. I could feel her bone against my bone: my wrist against her hip - her strong hip, her proud hip, a child-bearing hip - oh what kind of hip was touching my hand? Could it be an honest hip? the kind I can trust? Or is it too fragile? close to breaking down? Is it? the bone? I pressed it. I pushed it, rubbing my wrist against it. I was communicating. I was saying hello. I pressed it again. What's your name, hip? Are you a good hip? I pressed it again, but this time, I held my pressure...then I let go. Then I pressed it again. This time, I held it even longer, and, when I let go, I waited. I waited for a while. And then, her hand responded. She gave me the answer. She said: yes! it's a good hip. Trust me: I know. Don't worry, she said. And she kept saying it. She was caressing my hand; she was barely moving it, but she was caressing.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 13, Apprehension, Paragraph 5, Clauses 29-50

Please: show mercy upon me, sister: for, when you met me, I would never have imagined myself in such garb, and I would not have held any treasure so high above me that I could have borne it. I would have balked, dear sister, like the most wretched of mules; like a brutish, flea-bitten thing, I have not understood myself, sister. I have been compelled. I have followed your beautiful echoing right into the most unsightly of places. I have hated myself. And now that I have found you here, sister, I am deathly afraid I shall never leave, even if the ground below me break, and a swarm of bees try to lift me away. So I beg you, sister, no matter what the greatness of your love be, and who the object of its glory, to bless my suffering with pity and charity, and to marry yourself to me, this once hopeless creature." Nike stopped, and he waited.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 7, Becoming Obedient, Paragraph 8, Clauses 8-16

MÉL: I would let my skirt fall down my thighs. I would spread my legs. One time, I wasn't wearing underwear. Why are you laughing? You think it's funny?

NIKE: Yeah, I think it's funny.

MÉL: You want me to stop?

NIKE: No, keep going.

MÉL: Alright. Where was I?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 12, Economic Justice, Paragraphs 26-30

Great sinew that grips the crest of the pelvic girdle - at the threshold of ilium - whence many great muscles start their journey, such as gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, his three vasti (lateralis, medialis and intermedius): four great ships whose massive hulls you, sartorius, have the privilege of escorting down man's thigh (cuddling them, wrapping yourself over and across them) until you fall spiraling down the inner side, inserting yourself at the tibia, that shimmering place behind which the robust and shapely gastrocnemius makes his dwelling: the great propellant, whom the ancients framed with gleaming buskins, which, connecting with the humble soleus, comes down to the very heel of man: that splendiferous tuberosity! that beneficial growth which takes the weight of our standing, which balances our otherwise feeble attempts at uprightness.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 22, Encountering Poverty, Paragraph 55

So anyway: there's only one reason I remember the opium dealer. One time, when he came by the apartment, he was standing outside on the steps: one foot on a higher step, the other foot stretching almost to the ground; his arms were spread out: one was grasping the railing, the other one was balancing. As he talked to Nike, I was standing in the doorway watching him balance like this. He kept moving his arms around and shifting his weight, balancing in a new way, playing with the stairs and gravity like so many had done before him. He kept moving his head too - but he wasn't looking around: his eyes were always on Nike, or else on Brian (who was also talking to him), and sometimes, he would look at me for a while, even though I don't think I ever said a word. And looking at us, he kept moving his head around - like a pet bird, but slower and more deliberate.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

"Are the highways so empty that robbers stoop to throwing down boys?"

"How did you know I was thrown?"

Ferrari betrayed nothing. "I can see the bruises on your face. I assume they didn't have to hit you. What did they take?"

"My flaut," said Lorenzo. The words had a little more spirit than Ferrari expected. Lorenzo continued, "It won't stop me. The concertmaster let me borrow one of his."

"Where is it?"

"He won't let me take it home."

Ferrari guffawed. "How will you practice?"

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story about a man who tries to carve his own destiny

"Give me your flaut." Handing it over, Ferrari watched his young charge lift her robes to her milky-white thighs. Spreading her legs wide, she dipped the flaut beneath her hems, nudging the fipple into her sheath; she pushed down on her mound and out came a sound, while the concertmaster sat gritting his teeth.

"It's a good thing," said Ferrari, clearing his throat, "this particular type of wood is resistant to moisture."

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring a man who didn't like what he saw

Sartorius led the way, twisting around the quadriceps, gripping the crest of the pelvic girdle, whence many muscles start their path-like gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, the three vasti: lateralis, medialis, intermedius-great ships whose massive hulls sartorius escorts down man's thigh-cuddling, wrapping himself over and around them-until he falls spiraling down the inner side, inserting himself at the tibia, the shimmering place behind which robust and shapely gastrocnemius makes his dwelling: the propeller, whom the ancients framed with gleaming buskins.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring a frank discussion of police work

Gog and Magog continued southeast in search of the Medeans. Encountering a tribe whose speech was intelligible, they inquired as to the location of High Harrah. "We know this mountain," said the chiefs. "It lies to the east. Find the tribe of the Magi. Among our people, they are the ones who keep the Haoma."

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story about following your beliefs

"It's not far to the road," said Shephard. "If one of us collapses, the other might be able to get help." He crawled through the back door. Clark followed. Shephard climbed the dune. Clark climbed after him. Shephard reached the top. He saw the highway to the east. He went south. Clark was confused. He reached the top. He saw trucks driving on the highway.

"I hate to ask this again," he said. "Why aren't we being driven? Couldn't somebody just pick us up?"

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LESBIAN: I was in Goroka - in the highlands of New Guinea - in September, I believe - for the cultural show. There I saw the Mudmen.

MS. JACKSON: Who are the Mudmen?

LESBIAN: The Mudmen make these clay masks - some big, some small -all of them hideously grotesque with giant noses and sharp, pointy teeth.

MS. JACKSON: They dance around with these masks?

LESBIAN: With mud caked over their entire bodies: from neck to toe.

ALICE: Are they naked?

LESBIAN: Of course not: they're wearing masks. In Rabaul - on the island of New Britain - I saw the famous Baining fire dance. There they wear masks that are made from bamboo, which they cover with tapa, a kind of bark cloth. That makes these masks very light. Naturally, they're even bigger.

MS. JACKSON: How big?

LESBIAN: Humongous: thirty to forty feet.

ALICE: No way!

– ACT I, lines 414-423

(ALICE exits.)

KOKOMO: Yet again, I'm left holding the wet, dirty towels. Not to worry. It's alright. I don't mind. In truth, if I could spend the rest of my life cleaning up after Fletcher Christian, I would be a very happy woman. Even if that is silly and backwards, that's how I feel. I would never phrase it like that to anybody; I'm not crazy. I'd make him take out the garbage and all that. Alice is right. It's high time I told him how much he makes my heart beat. I could turn it into a joke if it looks like he's uncomfortable. That would be dreadful. What kind of a joke would it be? I need a heart transplant? That's not funny. What am I going to do?

MS. JACKSON: Kokomo!

KOKOMO: Of course: the laundry.

Usage of High in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Mark had a thing about being fast. The faster he went, the higher he could claim his wage was, since as a rural carrier he was paid the same salary no matter how long he took. Being able to say to his family and friends that he was paid to sit on his couch and drink margaritas was one of the small perquisites of the job.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story about something terrible that unfortunately exists in real life

The general continued. "Reports of our agents in the Perseus arm confirm the possibility that forces of Scutum-Centaurus are assembling within the shadow of the galactic core. Their presumed intention is to make further raids into the open clusters that border the near end of the bar. Rumors of a so-called hypersphere capable of transporting infinite mass via the brane strings are just that. Rumors. The Orion Star Alliance has concluded that Scutum is not planning further incursions into our territory. Nevertheless the military is on high alert. Dark matter mining will continue to increase. All projects confirmed within the last two galactic arc-seconds will be subject to review and possible suspension. That is all."

– from “Titan's Reign,” a science fiction story that absorbs all hope even when it's traveling at light speed

Sir Lewis wasn't surprised by the scores. He rocked the individual competition. If not for his brain-dead team he could've won. One other math genius in his high school was all he needed. Instead he was matched with doofuses.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about getting together in an unforgiving world

She wrapped her arms around my shoulders. Our foreheads touched. I put my hands on her bare knees. I rubbed her thighs. With each stroke, I circled wider. I went a little slower. I ventured deeper up her leg. I wondered when she would stop me. She didn't. My fingers brushed the edge of her panties. I drew back. I left my hands around her knees.

Indiana lifted her head. I looked up. She was staring into my eyes. She pecked me quickly on the lips. I had no time to pucker. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I've ruined your party."

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might calm one's nerves depending on your outlook

Orbitz pulled up the hood of his skin-suit. Destiny lay aboard the Nautilus. Orbitz sputtered his way towards the stern of the ship. By the time he got to the airlock he could see the flashing red lights of an intruder alert. Marriott had done her job. Orbitz boarded the ship. He looked at the clock. There wasn't much time left before his bomb would explode. He headed carefully towards the gallery. He wasn't sure how this was going to happen. When he got to the hatch he saw Heather Mills. All eight of her legs were stretching to their limit. She was craning her head over the edge of the window, straining to see the Argo. She lifted herself a little higher with the hand bar. She dropped her doll. It didn't matter. She was fascinated by the ship's slow spinning descent. It was already transitting the planet. "That's why she doesn't see me," thought Orbitz. "She's distracted by the view. She knows there's an intruder but she's acting like nothing's wrong." Orbitz wondered for a moment if he had told himself too much. If Heather Mills might know what was happening. He tried to remember what he had told himself so many years ago. He smiled. He had mentioned the sauna. He had tried in vain to change his past. He had said go to the sauna. It was the one piece of the ship that went back in time. Heather Mills had read his mind on the bridge. That's why she was here. She had come to be next to the sauna. It was on the other side of the hall. Like a child she had been distracted. Orbitz realized his entire destiny pivoted on the childishness of this pathetic little girl. It made him give the lightest of chortles. Heather Mills jerked her head. She saw Orbitz's reflection in the dark part of the glass. Before she could turn around he had shut the hatch. He locked it. He turned and walked into the sauna.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
