Right, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is weighing the potential of expanding his overwhelming Fiction Corpus with a history of the art fair; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the viability of upholding English as a global lingua franca. I do doubt the irksome technique by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Polishing a person's skills with a language isn't like making a more flexible variety of bamboo. A language - a living tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A shared language can't be disconnected from the competing values of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make students recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A good teacher must create a strategy for introducing it; the wisest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a specific corpus, a set of written language of varying scope and consistency. Such a corpus might contain everything from a book about literature to some true real life stories. I developed my "formidable" Fiction Corpus in order to form a unique sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have broken them down, reformulating them - not merely to teach English vocabulary but to reveal the human soul, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

My plane touched down in Poland on June 20th. A month later I was in Austria. Two days later, Slovenia. The next day, Croatia. A week later, Italy. The next day, Switzerland. The next day, France. The next day, Germany. The next day, Belgium. The next day, Holland. All with a woman I had met my first weekend on the Continent.

I had come to Europe to experience European naturism, a movement whose philosophy matched my aesthetic of body acceptance and whose organizational structure and leadership I had thought almost exclusively restricted to the western half of the continent. I was shocked to learn that naturism had an official home in Poland, a country not especially known for its liberal culture. I was less shocked to discover that the home was owned by a Dutchman, but even more shocked to learn that it had been largely built by Margo.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Right

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word right in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word right, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word right is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Definition of RightMargo on a trampoline

The word right refers to a kind of artifact or person or fuel that fulfills your expectations of it, as long as your expectations fulfill the expectations of your community and the expectations of your community fulfill the expectations of God as far as you expect all the previously mentioned to fulfill your expectations. It can also refer to the act of fulfilling one's expectations. It also refers to a place that you turn to if you turn yourself clockwise or to an artifact related to such a place.

Usage of Right in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Right across from Jesus's mother's house, there lived a pretty girl. Sapper was always interested in pretty girls; when we were older, he would accost them on the street. In those days, when we were young, before Sapper's luck had run out, he was more discreet, but no less idiotic.

Verse 206 from the chapter called Childhood

"It's alright," I said. "What is it?"

"That, my friend, is the great Glass Pyramid of Centropolis, and the surrounding courtyard. It was built almost five hundred years ago by my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, and you," he said, "are going to help me reclaim it."

"I was talking about this."

"Oh," he said. "That's melba toast."

"It's not bad."

"You should try the aspic."

"Aspic?" I said. "What in the goddamn hell is that?" Your grandfather was kind enough to point it out.

"Oh," I said, "you mean galeretka. No, but thank you: it makes me puke."

"It makes you puke?"

"I mean gag - I think it's the texture."

"Well, I'm very sorry."

"Not as sorry as my grandmother: it was her favorite dish." Your grandfather didn't know what to say - it was very awkward. "I don't mean to offend."

"Oh no, not at all," he said.

"It's just that we don't use fancy names."

"Oh, quite right. Quite right. Do you interest yourself in gastronomy?"

Verses 24-38 from the chapter called Childhood

The girl was right: your father was the most convenient. He accepted that, with every tool of logic in his brain. It was comforting to know that the most shameful part of it was hidden: no one was going to find out - she wouldn't tell (to protect herself) and neither would he - it was their secret: their little bedtime secret. Nobody would ever know that your father had been fucked by a girl.

Verse 231 from the chapter called Childhood

"Estate! He was Commandant for thirty years; Andrew worked in the electronics factory - this is how they spend their retirement? Keeping up their 'estate?' They furnished it with trash! Every floor has a furnace they found at the dump! Andrew burns coal, not because he has to, but because he can't afford a gas permit. He can't afford a gas permit because he hasn't sold a goddamn thing! Twenty-six hectares and what are they for? Inducing poverty? Who's going to buy from him? Nowadays, a village is no different from a city or a town or whatever it is you want to call it. People buy food from stores and not their neighbors. Well, maybe except for meat: that's about the only thing villagers won't buy from any store - and good thing too: maybe they'll start making good sausages again, 'cause right now - God forgive their greedy souls - they're full of extenders."

"I should go and thank him," said Jesus.

Usage of Right in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

He even fought to secure legislation protecting the copyright of an artist. And it came as a great surprise to learn that he was very involved with the theatre. I knew that his first great painting was a scene from a contemporary farce, but the extent of the theatre's influence on him was gradually revealed to me and I was dumbfounded. He was even friends with the famous Mr. Garrick, and all this was greatly appreciated by my companions. This exploration of all the influences over Mr. Hogarth comprised the bulk of the lecture, and it extended to include not only the theatre, but also the painter's experience of marriage.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 4, Clauses 5-12

It started innocently enough: I was living in that townhouse on Prospect Street, right at that point in the road where, after sloping its way down for blocks, it curls upward for a while before leveling off. My kitchen provided an excellent view of this dip, and during my residency I was able to spot many unsuspecting acquaintances as they were in the process of crossing the intersection there. It was after dark one night when I spotted Macy in the light of the streetlamp. I called him over. After exchanging greetings, he asked whether I had enjoyed last night's party. I said yes, "what a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the production; we had such an excellent cast." He agreed and pointed out the virtues of several cast members - until finally, it was necessary to interrupt. "Macy," I said, "you're getting cold. Come inside and have a drink."

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 7, Trying to Kiss, Paragraph 1

Is it a person's right to participate simply because the participants receive privileges? There is something perplexing about that. It's also strange that the court interprets the protection of the traditional family as equivalent to actively increasing the number of people who choose to belong to such families, and that because the state cannot prove it could increase those numbers, it has no rational reason to protect that tradition. Can you figure that one out? I urge you to read the argument: perhaps you can decipher some sensibility in all that garbage.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 18, The Role of the Judicious Mind, Paragraph 4

I had to laugh, in fact: having contorted myself into such an absurd position, I just had to laugh. And I kept laughing, but there was dust falling into my eyes. Suddenly, I had to cough, and, after clearing my throat, I decided to laugh one last time through my nose. But that was a mistake: a very big mistake: now I had the terrible urge to sneeze, and I couldn't help myself. I tried to stop it, but I couldn't. All I did was twist my head a bit. And that made things worse: my sneeze threw a huge cloud of ash right into my eyes - I tried to open them, but I couldn't. I felt the dust all around me. So I had to wait; I didn't want to hit myself on the flue, but I couldn't hold my breath - at least, not for long - because I didn't have any. So I tried to take a short breath through my nose. But I just made myself sneeze again. So I tore my head out from the chimney, not cracking my head - thankfully - but I swore like the devil.

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

AT RISE: KOKOMO is wiping up the floor.

KOKOMO: Clean. Clean. Clean. We are obsessed by cleaning. If space is a giant vacuum, why does all the dust settle here: underneath the table? Why not in the middle of the floor? Where I can see it? Where I can wipe it up with my feet? We know perfectly well why, don't we, Kokomo? Master Fletcher can't be bothered to take off his shoes. Thanks to him, it's: 'wipe the floor, Kokomo.' Yes, Ms. Jackson. 'Clean the kitchen, girl.' Yes, Ms. Jackson. 'When is lunch, dear?' I don't know, Ms. Jackson. Honestly, where does all this dust come from? What am I supposed to do with it? There really is no sense in cleaning more than once a month. Let the moon show when it's time to clean. Ms. Jackson certainly doesn't know. She would have me clean my way right into an early grave. Kokomo was not built for dust. She was built for love.

MS. JACKSON: (off) Kokomo!

KOKOMO: Yes, Ms. Jackson.

– ACT I, lines 1-3

FLETCHER: Pardon me.

MS. JACKSON: Alright. Let me unfold it for you.

– ACT II, lines 272-273

GREY GOOSE: Speak up.

MS. JACKSON: There is no lighter sound than the ring of truth. It springs from the tongue like a frightened toad, aiming its horny skin into the eyes of those who would seek to catch it. Were you to devour a million truths you would never find them all and you'd still be as hungry as when you first started - so beware, husband, lest you choke.

GREY GOOSE: On a frog in my throat? Have you gone mad? There are no frogs on this island, woman - in case you hadn't noticed your entire life. I suppose that friend of yours from New Zealand taught you to speak with such poetry.

MS. JACKSON: New Zealand has a great literary heritage. That's something you couldn't possibly understand.

GREY GOOSE: Am I daft?

MS. JACKSON: You are a bully: a no-good, bleeding, rebel-rousing bully.

GREY GOOSE: Alright.

MS. JACKSON: A fire-starter.

GREY GOOSE: Enough.

MS. JACKSON: Arsonist!

– ACT I, lines 301-310

FLETCHER: I'll be happy to oblige once we finish these scenes.

ALICE: Can't we do it now?

FLETCHER: Don't you want to kiss me?

ALICE: I want to mull up.

FLETCHER: You're not interested in kissing me.

ALICE: There's nothing wrong with that.

FLETCHER: With wanting to kiss me? Of course there isn't.

ALICE: With wanting to mull up.

FLETCHER: Kissing me is alright?

ALICE: No.

– ACT II, lines 151-160

(MS. JACKSON exits.)

LESBIAN: I suppose there's no point in arguing.

FLETCHER: My mother can be very insistent.

FLETCHER: I'm sorry for interfering.

Usage of Right in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I almost didn't go to see Barack. I was ashamed of the time he asked me to move in with him and I said no. It was right after Obama disappeared. There were skinheads crawling all over Moscow looking for Africans to beat. Barack thought it would be safer if we lived together. I didn't disagree. It would have been cheaper too but I was used to my own apartment. That's what I told Barack. I never liked him much. Obama was always goofing off. He was a trickster. He was fun to be around. Barack was always in a bad mood. It could have been partly because of Obama. I don't know.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story inspired by real events, though the details are fictional

I often wonder why the cruelty imposed on my brothers was necessary for my story. If not for what happened to Barack I would never have been frightened out of Moscow. I would never have had the courage to walk into the unknown. If Barack was not forced to live a life of constant pain, I would not have the life of love I enjoy with my wife. How can I thank him for that?

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that should give us hope no matter who we are

I got out. I shut the door. I walked to the porch. Indiana turned the car around. I watched her roll it to the end of the driveway. The turn signal blinked. It was bright red. The engine howled. Gravel churned beneath tires.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may help overcome one's fears depending on your outlook

My wife's pride is the only thing keeping us apart. She's always had an inferiority complex. Always pissed that I have the right answer. I keep telling her its not her fault. I'm older. I had a head start. She's strong. Eventually she'll be able to do everything I can do. As soon as I'm dead.

– from “The Backed-Up Toilet,” a literature story based on real life as I lived it

Both of my brothers died up on that hill. I would've died too if I hadn't run. What was I supposed to do. Both my brothers were dead. All three of those damn Curiazi were still alive. They were bloodied alright but they were still shooting. I couldn't hold all three of them off at the same time. I ran. Right down the hill. I made those Curiazi brothers chase me. Find me. That's what saved me. That's how I won. I picked them off one after the other.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story without a lot of screaming coming straight out of Roman mythology

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
