Dead, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's wrestling with the feasibility of compounding his gallant Fiction Corpus with a coffee table book about photo art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the potential of exploiting English as a universal language. I do question the pleasureless steps through which English is presented for study.Pointer

Improving a person's proficiency with a language isn't like producing a more accurate compass. A language - a living tongue - is not just an instrument that you can teach yourself to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A shared tongue can't be disassociated from the shared logic of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. A proper teacher has to prepare a plan for introducing it; the smartest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying scope and consistency. This corpus might include everything from a book about literature to some really weird fiction. I watched many nights pass laboring on my "insignificant" Fiction Corpus to form a different type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have diagnosed them, reshaping them - not simply to teach the English language but to reveal the human spirit, and to goad that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On Monday, I arrived in Europe. By Wednesday I had bought a car. By Friday I had met the woman who a few months later would end up having travelling 6,000 miles across Europe with me.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Dead

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word dead in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word dead, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word dead is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Dead in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

A year after that, a group of pirates led by Malabin dell'Osa were responsible for bombing two U.S. government installations in outer space. Two years later, the same group was suspected of organizing a suicide ramming that tore a hole into the side of a U.S. Space Ship, killing seventeen sailors on board and wounding thirty-nine. In the following year, they used the same technique to annihilate the Interplanetary Trade Center, which, eight years earlier, had suffered only minor damage from the terrorist bomb that had killed six. This time, in what quickly became known as the most deadly and infamous terrorist attack in history, three thousand people died. Many more would have suffered a similar fate, but, fortunately, the modules were mostly evacuated by the time they blew.

Verse 311 from the chapter called Adolescence

More than one Russian oil company raised itself an independent or 'independent but attached' battalion, just to gain itself a seat in the Presidium. For almost the same reason, Krupnik Holding was doing more than its fair share of recruitment. The Polish government, beleaguered with its own problems, and having very little to do in the way of oil, was totally uninterested in Panzer-Tank's privateering. Apart from a certain Polish educational institution, which possessed oil fields in Baku thanks to an ancient and once lost but then recovered endowment, Krupnik Holding was the only organization in Poland involved in the war effort. But instead of just pumping money into Panzer-Tank's war chest, Krupnik Holding was also raising troops. The prevailing theory among Jesus's coterie, considering that Panzer-Tank's daughter Zoe was engaged to be married to Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's son, was that the Krupniks were trying to accumulate enough votes in the Presidium to offset the Russian influence that might hamper Panzer-Tank's own interests. Thus, the Guderians and Krupniks were allying against the Russian threat, a situation which resulted in one dead Baron Cohen-Krupnik with Russian bullets in his head. But this was only theory.

Verse 216 from the chapter called Security

Was he really going to do it? he thought to himself. Was he really going to rob a Krupnik? Jesus was out of breath - he was really out of breath: his lungs hurt. What about his future brother-in-law? Jesus thought. Was he really going to attack two people at once with his bare hands? Impossible: Jesus shook his head. There was no way he was going to do it. He was going to watch them walk by with impunity and let them go home to their many-storied mansions, their glass palaces, their filtered paradises - he was a miserable human being! He was weak and defenseless! He was a bad person! Jesus sank to his haunches and rubbed his face. Mother was dead! A little girl was buried! Her neck was broken! A beautiful face bloodied! She fell from a third-story window onto concrete! Jesus rubbed his face and got up. He turned around. He rubbed his face against red brick. He beat his head. He beat the brick wall with his hands. Then he rubbed his face again: in the red brick: he tried to smush his face into the wall. It helped. Jesus was quiet. He wondered where they were. What was taking so long? Maybe they had left. Maybe they were gone. Maybe Jesus had missed them. O God! he prayed. Make it so I've missed them! Make it so I don't have to choose. Then he heard them. There were footsteps. He turned around. He put his back against the wall again. He sidestepped his way into a more complete darkness. There they were! crossing the street! This was it. Jesus didn't move. He thought about it: for a split-second, he almost moved a leg - but no: there was nothing. He was going to let them walk by with impunity. Go ahead, he said to himself. Go back to your filtered paradises - leave me the fuck alone.

Verse 613 from the chapter called Adolescence

Pack your bags and come for the funeral.

Your mother is dead.

Verses 20-21 from the chapter called Adolescence

These things didn't really concern Jesus; they were perceptions that reflected people's insecurities. Jesus had his own problems: that fateful night, while loading arms from his uncle's back room, Baron Cohen-Krupnik showed up in his electric truck. Efforts to capture him were complicated by Jesus's desire to capture this valuable asset (the truck), which he did (intact), but only after having Stalin chase it halfway around Center City (on foot), by which point, although the battery was dead and the truck's driver was forced to proceed on foot, Stalin's own battery was well out of range: he was so tired, he could barely lift his gun. Ironically, the Krupnik disappeared around St. Jesus's Church.

Usage of Dead in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

ANDY: No, I'm glad I understand it now. So what's wrong with this guy's credit?

BERT: Oh nothing; he's got plenty of creditors - just not the financial kind.

ANDY: How's that?

BERT: He's dead, I'm afraid. He passed away several years ago.

ANDY: Was he a friend of yours?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 8, Financial Instruments, Paragraphs 35-39

You remember what she said at the door? She said: "Albert is always working. He works nonstop: nothing but work, work, work. I am afraid to leave him alone with Olympia. One time, he was in the room with her. He was working of course. And Olympia was jumping on the mattress in her crib. She jumped right out of it! She jumped over the railing. Not only that, but she flipped: in mid-air she flipped around. Luckily too - because that way she must have fell on her back. But she was holding onto the railing - you know? when she jumped? That's why she flipped. Otherwise, she would be dead right now: kaput. She would have fall right on the head. Good thing she is older: she will not crack it. But God knows, she will poke her eye out with scissors and Albert will not even notice. How are you, Giant? You are looking very handsome today, like always - very nice. I wish you all the best on the occasion of your name-day."

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 22, Holidays, Paragraph 3

INDIE: Yes, it's not working. Albert was supposed to fix it.

JO: Are you sure it's plugged in? Maybe Olympia pulled it out.

INDIE: No: the plug is behind everything.

JO: Maybe the socket's dead. But everything else is working, right?

INDIE: Yes, everything else is working.

JO: Well. I guess I'll just use the CD player.

INDIE: Oh, did you bring any CDs?

JO: No. I didn't.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 32, Femme Fatale, Paragraphs 22-29

I remember counting back the number of days, and, using up all ten digits, I asked Grandmother if the apples could be refrigerated. She said I was perfectly free to do whatever necessary, but as long as that cherry branch was still dead, I was going to have to wait till next year. Everybody laughed; Indiana took the opportunity to speak.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 21, Giving and Receiving a Look, Paragraph 1, Clauses 7-10

There was even a bottle of Eszencia from nineteen eighty-three, with a stamped handwritten label. There were a lot of Hungarian folk dolls, even a Gypsy doll. I was reminded of our own Austrian folk dolls, and I wondered whether these figurines were the only way we would ever remember the old customs. It was certainly decorative, and a convenient way of keeping the ancestral traditions alive. Although, I suppose they are not alive, not if we refuse to practice them. But if we do cling to these dolls then they are not yet dead. They are simply comatose.

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LUKE: Why not? You've lived in peace for so long.

FLETCHER: If by peace you mean we've committed just about every crime except murder.

ALICE: Is that true?

MS. JACKSON: My son likes to exaggerate.

FLETCHER: Consider it. In a community of such close quarters with nowhere to go, the only thing you can't ignore is a dead body. Besides that, anything goes.

MS. JACKSON: Feel free to ignore my son's imagination.

FLETCHER: The next time I'm selected for a jury, I'm not going to lie when they ask me if I've ever been accused or been the victim of a crime.

ALICE: You lied?

FLETCHER: I said no.

Usage of Dead in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

One day the hair was gone. It was replaced by two hairs. Then three. Before long there were too many hairs to count. Grendel went to her grandmother but her grandmother was dead. The man at the funeral said something about the Chinook. Grendel was sure she would be next.

"Listen," said the captain. "I want you to interview this John Gamble but don't take Bob. Apparently he busted the guy's husband when he was back on vice."

Proctor interrupted. "I think you should know, captain," he said. "My wife probably modeled for this guy way back when."

The captain sighed. "Are you sure?" he asked. "You know what. Never mind. Take Simmons with you. Just do it."

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a dead figure model put in a weird position

"What about this?" asked Simmons. He came over with a framed photo in his hand. He showed it to Proctor. It was a pair of men in front of a silver SUV.

"That's my husband," said John. "And his partner. His business partner. The SUV must belong to him."

The orbits of Captain Orbitz as told and retold by trillions of Orion systemizens, indeed systemizens from across many a galaxy, never fluctuated from their purpose of helping Captain Tycho "Tych" Orbitz conquer his home galaxy. Tych was firm from the day he resigned his commision as a courier in the Star Alliance to the day he vanished into space. Many were afraid he would come back. Many more hoped he would. They thought he was out pirating somewhere with Lalunia, his pheromonically irresistible great-great-great-great-niece, or ruling a planet with the beautifully blue Sara Lee, or fighting the jilted queen of the Astrazeneca or playing chess with CAROline the computer that loved him. They didn't know he was dead. They had no idea he had died long before he had even resigned his commission. Before he hijacked the tesseract marking the beginning of his rebellion or piloted the stolen ship Nautilus into the singularity the man had physically removed his own dead body from the bridge. He had no choice. At the time the ship was scheduled to be inspected by Star Alliance sanitation officers.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance in the spirit of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

My wife's pride is the only thing keeping us apart. She's always had an inferiority complex. Always pissed that I have the right answer. I keep telling her its not her fault. I'm older. I had a head start. She's strong. Eventually she'll be able to do everything I can do. As soon as I'm dead.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
