General, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is debating the notion of enhancing his stately Fiction Corpus with a history of art work; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the practicality of implementing English as everyone's second language. I don't regard highly the tepid technique by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Polishing one's artfulness with a language isn't like developing a more informative newspaper. A language - a common tongue - is not just an instrument that you can teach yourself to wield with greater amounts of precision. A language cannot be riven from the philosophical currents of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. An informed teacher has to find a method of introducing it; the prudent student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written language of varying size and consistency. A corpus may include anything from a book about literature to a collection of book reviews. I lost many a sleepless night creating my "immense" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have assembled a million words and I have anatomized them, reformulating them - not merely to teach the English tongue but to promote the human soul, and to prod that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

In June of 2011 I arrived in Europe for what I hoped would be a great adventure; my only concrete plan, to visit Croatia. By September I had driven 6,000 miles and visited 12 different countries, all with a woman I met on the first Friday of my trip.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

As an American, I was full of optimism and confidence bordering on recklessness. I was ready to run the wheels off the car I had just bought and eventually I would. As a European, she was cautious and mistrustful. She needed to make sure the air conditioner worked. Which it did. If you knew how to turn the broken knob in just the right way.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word General

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word general in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word general, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word general is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of General in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

The Russian government was particularly supportive. Pumping a billion dollars into Panzer-Tank's war chest, the Russian government equipped and trained two entire divisions for the invasion force. Composed of fifty thousand volunteer Russian troops, this army corps was led by officers from the ranks of the Russian general staff. Each division was led by a major general who used to be, in the Russian army, a lieutenant general. These two major generals reported to a lieutenant general who, in the Russian army, used to be a general. This lieutenant general reported to a general who, as it happened, used to be a U.S. Army colonel. That's how important this war was to the Russian government.

Verse 214 from the chapter called Security

Thus it was that the center-right party won the Parliamentary elections in Poland that year. Through the Defense Ministry, the government ended up making a sizable contribution to Panzer-Tank's war effort. This contribution, however, was entirely in Jesus's hands. As de facto leader of the Independent (Lower Silesian) Riflemen's Armored Brigade, or NOBS(DS), as the Polish acronym was spelled, Jesus was entitled to, and, before he left, was ultimately granted by the new Polish government, the rank of Brigadier General, a distinction which placed him in rather good standing with respect to the other independent commanders.

Verse 62 from the chapter called Vows

Twenty years! How quickly they have passed! I thought your grandfather would die before me. I thought I might have a chance to do something. But whom am I kidding? His generals would've killed me as soon as your grandfather were dead. I am hated. I am the most hated man on Mars. I am the Lonely Planet. I killed your father! I killed your mother and Your brother!

Verse 16 from the chapter called Invocation

Then, in Jesus's bedroom, we played our favorite game, blind man's buff. It was Sapper's idea; Sapper always wanted to play it. At the time, it was generally known as the best opportunity for grabbing girls, but Sapper's excitement was unparalleled. Your father liked it too: he liked to fall on top of girls when he caught them. He said that on top of them was the only way he could recognize girls blindfolded. We were devils, but ladies like devils. Fathers, on the other hand, do not - and Sapper got your father in trouble one time.

Verse 205 from the chapter called Childhood

Jesus was not just commander of NOBS(DS) - the Independent (Lower Silesian) Riflemen's Armored Brigade - he was also named Grand Master (G.M.) of the Cosmonauts of St. Benedict (C.S.B.) by the Vatican. The two institutions, though partially pooling their memberships, were entirely distinct, but, because Jesus owned the Brigade, technically, under his leadership, the Cosmonauts of St. Benedict, as a religious order with property held in common, had a corporate claim. It was precisely as 'Grand Master and Brigadier General' - not 'Brigadier General and Grand Master' - that Jesus was invested with a permanent seat in the Presidium.

Verse 87 from the chapter called Vows

Usage of General in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

BERT: Oh, my beautiful, little Olympia: your daddy needs a rest. He's been working too hard for you. Don't you want me to rest a bit?

OLYMP: Can't you just go to sleep?

BERT: How do you expect me to sleep when you keep banging away at that piano, screaming with your sister and making general havoc all the time?

OLYMP: I can stop playing.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 4, The Fourth Day, Part 2, The Assembly & Government Reform, Section 7, Properly Taking One's Leave, Paragraphs 45-48

ANDY: No, not specifically on this war. I don't know anything about this war. But it's about war in general, and, specifically, nation-building.

CHR: Oh, I see.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 10, Bringing Up a Sore Subject, Paragraphs 46-47

Now that Barbara should've become the patron saint of architects, builders, and stonemasons is quite understandable; that she also protects artillerymen is somewhat more intuitive; but that she should become associated with the practice of keeping cherry branches warm: that is a little unexpected. However, it is not for me to challenge the common sense of tradition. Besides, in older days, the connection was not so farfetched: the blooming of the cherry branch was not a sign of general felicity, but carried a very specific matrimonial significance.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 20, The Role Of Religion, Paragraph 5

There is nothing like philosophy to kill the spirit. And don't try to infer from my history of failure that somehow my judgment has been flawed all along; I assure you that the overwhelming majority of gentlemen, and of course ladies, who have presented themselves to me as potential companions have done so with the utmost regard for disclosure. What many have lacked in dignity, or especially tact, was generally offset by charming attributes in other areas. And I feel no shame in confessing that often enough our relations were hampered only by my own indiscretions.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 1, Section 1, Introduction, Paragraph 2, Clauses 7-11

Waiting a few seconds to make the moment more dramatic, I mustered in my throat as stern a voice as possible, and just when it looked like malice and cruel amusement would triumph, I yelled out three hundred dollars with coldest passion. It caused a sensation, a sweet and climactic joy for which no other bidder was prepared. Almost immediately Barbara was sold, causing a general sigh of relief that passed over the crowd, enveloping Barbara's own satisfaction as if they were apologizing for what almost happened, congratulating themselves at the same time for being able to enjoy such a dangerous game so successfully.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

His wife wouldn't touch him. She generally slept with Lorenzo above the side of the hall facing the garden. Manfredo would sleep on the daybed, whether or not it was outside. Since the room above the shop was usually rented, Ferrari, like a dog, would have to sleep in the center of the hall, curled around the fireplace.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring a disappearing flaut

It's hard to say whether Ferrari loved his mother. She died of plague when he was young. Often he would try to remember what she was like by cuddling next to a pillow and pretending it was her. He grew out of that. Like many children who have lost parents, the energy that would have gone into pleasing his mother was devoted to a general resentment of other people, which he hid, and a feeling of entitlement, which manifested itself more obviously.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring a flautist

Usage of General in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Management won. With the general decline in mail volume that year rural paychecks went down. Resentment and grumbling went up. When Rural Rural Route 6 finally acquired the house at the end of Profile it added to the workload and nothing else. Rural Route 4 felt overburdened as well. When Old Man Perkinson retired from Rural Rural Route 9 and it was decided once again to eliminate the vacant route, tempers flared.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story that isn't factual and yet represents reality, since the details are fictional

The general continued. "Reports of our agents in the Perseus arm confirm the possibility that forces of Scutum-Centaurus are assembling within the shadow of the galactic core. Their presumed intention is to make further raids into the open clusters that border the near end of the bar. Rumors of a so-called hypersphere capable of transporting infinite mass via the brane strings are just that. Rumors. The Orion Star Alliance has concluded that Scutum is not planning further incursions into our territory. Nevertheless the military is on high alert. Dark matter mining will continue to increase. All projects confirmed within the last two galactic arc-seconds will be subject to review and possible suspension. That is all."

– from “Titan's Reign,” a science fiction story that absorbs all hope even when it's traveling at light speed

Pfizer fiddled with his laser pointer. "If only the old man could see me now," he thought. He was staring out the window. Listening to the tap-tap rattle of methane as it hit the transparent concrete. "Things could be worse," he thought. "I could be at Lagrangian Station 3. On the far side of the sun. Without the glimmer of a hope of seeing that beautiful blue orb in the sky."

"Doctor Pothammer," said the general. "I hope I'm not boring you."

– from “Titan's Reign,” a science fiction story from which light cannot emerge even when it's traveling at light speed

"What about Jeff?" asked Jessica. Sarah crossed her eyebrows. "The two of you were having quite the conversation by the lake. What were you talking about?"

Sarah laughed weakly. She said, "Adopting a child." Jessica almost spit her drink. "Not between the two of us, obviously," explained Sarah. "We talked about adoption in general."

"So," said Jessica. "Are you going to tap that?"

This time Sarah spit her drink. "My husband is coming in two days," she said. "What are you talking about?"

– from “A Magnum Condom,” a bedtime story to teach children about relationships that may or may not work

On the fourth day I read aloud again from Dostoyevsky's The Idiot. I was practicing my diction. After I got tired of reading I started thinking aloud. I was discussing with myself the imagery in the story. Relating it to my own situation. After amusing myself in this way I decided I was being silly. I sat in silence again. I thought about Barack and his twitching and the general ignorance of people.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
