Being, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is thinking over the concept of enlarging his heroic Fiction Corpus with further books of fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the viability of harnessing English as a common language for the world. I do doubt the conventional model by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Enhancing one's command of a language isn't like making a safer match. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A living language can not be detached from the shared logic of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching pupils to recite English is to deprive them of its cultural context. A worthy teacher must find a way to introduce it; the prudent student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a specific corpus, a body of written language of varying scope and consistency. This corpus may contain everything from a book about literature to some truly brilliant kindergarten stories. I watched many moons pass creating my "unimpressive" Fiction Corpus to form a distinct class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have pieced together a million words and I have sorted them, reframing them - not merely to teach an American tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to propel that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On the second to last weekend of June, 2011, I had joined my fellow naturists at a gathering of the Naturist Society in rural Pennsylvania. The next day I left on a flight for Europe. By the end of the week I had unexpectedly met another naturist, a woman, who was destined to accompany me on a tour of Europe's great naturist resorts.

Though I felt fully formed as a writer, and had been trained in visual language, it was my first time with a professional camera in my hands. I was just learning the ins and outs and had come to Europe to find as diverse a selection of subject matter as possible, preferably something that fit my aesthetic devotion to promoting body acceptance. Enter Margo.

Though I was born in Europe, I had been brought up from a young age in America, living in states as diverse as Nebraska, Ohio and Connecticut. I was taught American values and saw reality from an American perspective. She was born and raised in a village in Poland. She went to work in the nearest town. The nearest city seemed like the center of the world. The American perspective was not something she was ever planning to see.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Being

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word being in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word being, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word being is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Being in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

So we stopped at the warehouse where your father's uncle bought some clothes by the scale. He bought enough clothes to fill twenty trash bags. Throwing about five trash bags into the back seat, he was able to fit five more into the trunk. Getting into the car, we placed all the other trash bags between our legs, underneath them and on our laps, beside ourselves, behind our backs and our heads, on either side, piling them underneath our arms and above them, squeezing them into our crotches, filling the pits of our knees and arms, making stacks that came up to our noses and our asses. They were not comfortable. They were plastic bags. They were black: they absorbed the midday sun. They made us hot and sweaty. They stuck to our skin. These plastic trash bags full of clothing stuck to our skin. It was disgusting. They smelled. It was like being poached in oil with sweet and sour pepper. The clothes were spilling out. Somebody would wear this filthy shirt squeezing out of my crotch. It was disgusting. There were balls of nylon stocking squeezing themselves into my ass. When we turned into a back alley and stopped, I was grateful.

"Is this the store?" I asked.

Verses 175-176 from the chapter called Adolescence

He was afraid of God; he feared that God might abandon him halfway through to wherever he was going. God was capable of crushing His servant, whether God came in the form of an angry terrorist or in the form of poisoned ketchup - the ways were endless; the source, only one: Jesus knew he was in the hands of God, Whose potential capriciousness was always a threat. Jesus trusted Him though - at least for the time being. The greatness to which Jesus seemed to be hurtling was of use to God - why else would He put His servant through such trials? There was a reason. Jesus didn't think God desired anything but Man's love. That would be difficult: Man was like a proud woman: not one who is quick to admit her faults. God's plan, whatever it be, would have to be complicated - ingenious, no doubt, but constantly frustrated by Man's will. Like so many great warriors before him, your father had to remind himself not to place God on his side, but to place himself on God's. Jesus's will was allied. Whatever God's plan be, Jesus was glad to be of service. However, as soon as Jesus's actions began influencing world events to a significant extent, Jesus began to wonder: is this it? Is this the extent of God's purpose for me? Is this where my biography shall end?

Verse 5 from the chapter called Bohemia

Your father's aunt lived in Alexandria, Virginia - close to Washington, D.C. She lived in a very nice house in a very nice neighborhood. My mother and I lived with her for many months. I called her my aunt, but she was really my godmother. The word for godmother is unnecessarily complicated in Polish, being equivalent to the term, 'baptismal mother,' so I was told to call her my aunt. My aunt was a lawyer; my mother was not. She cleaned houses.

Verse 92 from the chapter called Childhood

"I never go to Mass," your mother said. She was being very stern. "Am I going to hell?"

Verse 908 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Being in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Apart from our peevish little cousin, there was no hint of frustration on that particular summer day. My curiosity was soon overwhelmed by the sight of Indiana, who alone emerged from around the house. From the bottom of that small hill, and perhaps owing to our age, she seemed, and continues to seem in my memory, as being very tall - so tall, in fact, that in my image of our first introduction, I see myself looking up to her face, trying to see her eyes from under her dark glasses while she conversed with our mother and our aunt. I was standing in a hole, perhaps.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 1, Genital Pain as a Result of Physical Trauma, Paragraph 3

I returned to the party and everything seemed all right; no one said anything. I stole a glance at Macy but he was listening to Nike, who was still babbling on about something. There were conversations here and there, nothing out of the ordinary. The only noticeable difference I felt was my extreme fatigue, so I sat down, as far away from Macy as possible. Disregarding the party, I sat absorbed in my own thoughts, rerunning the scene in my head, imagining what Macy could possibly have murmured. What could he have said in this company, among these people oblivious to our strange and secret love? What would he probably mention, without waiting for a private moment? What would he dare whisper? These were unanswerable questions for the time being, and I had little hope of having the courage to ask them.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 9, Attacking homosexuality, Paragraph 3

Maybe that's why the orderlies walk around here with such pained expressions. You'd think they'd be happy to watch rich men die. But I am being grossly unfair: it's probably just Monday morning - but I can't help noticing such things from my current situation; sitting next to Albert's deathbed, it does seem to be a rather expensive way of dying. I would much rather prefer to die in my own bed, in my own house, surrounded by my own children. Although I must admit, this is a rather nice room. However, I don't think Indiana likes coming here. I'm not sure whether it's because of Albert's condition or because of the surroundings, but she was very grateful when I said I could take the bulk of the vigil.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

They claimed Aeëtes had a daughter named Medea. She had been taken to Hellas [i.e. Greece] by a man named Iason. Being deserted by him, she fled with their son to the mountains southeast of Kolkhis. There she founded a tribe. In her honor, they were called Medeans. As descendents of Helios, they would know the location of High Harrah.

Hell has not heard such cries. Nor had Ferrari anticipated, despite being on many battlefields, the strong smell of sulfur coming from his brother's hair. It was nauseating. Usage of Being in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: You assume I lied about that.

MS. JACKSON: I've never heard you accused of anything.

FLETCHER: No one's ever gossiped to you about me or what I do or whom I see?

MS. JACKSON: Why are you being so contrary?

FLETCHER: I'm just surprised you didn't hear anything about me and Mrs. Menzies making out behind St. Barnabas. I guess the McCoy brothers kept their end of the bargain. They extorted five hundred and fifty-two dollars from me in exchange for promising to keep quiet. Cash, by the way, is very hard to come by on this island. What could I do? I couldn't have the usual gossip substantiated by solid testimony from a pair of young, sweet, innocent-looking boys, could I?

– ACT I, lines 122-126

MS. JACKSON: When were you in Fiji?

LESBIAN: Not too long ago. I stayed in a hut just like the villagers do. It was part of a hotel on a secluded beach. It was absolutely gorgeous. The island is very touristy though - more than some of the others I've been to. The dance I'm thinking of was part of the welcoming ceremony. It occurs to me that despite being technically part of Melanesia, the dances of Fiji have much in common with Polynesian dances. There's that same emphasis on the word and the use of the arms and the hands.

ALICE: Where have you seen Polynesian dances?

LESBIAN: In New Zealand.

ALICE: Is New Zealand part of Polynesia?

LESBIAN: Yes.

ALICE: I didn't even realize.

FLETCHER: You assumed they were all tropical beaches.

LESBIAN: When I was on the islands of New Guinea and New Britain, I saw some very different dancing.

MS. JACKSON: Do tell.

– ACT I, lines 404-413

(MS. JACKSON enters.)

MS. JACKSON: How are you coming along?

KOKOMO: I'm almost done with the floor.

MS. JACKSON: Excellent. Do you mind if I help?

KOKOMO: Not at all.

MS. JACKSON: Can you believe my husband's charity? In trying to lighten your load, he increases it ten-fold.

KOKOMO: I'm sure he meant well.

MS. JACKSON: As every man always does. I'm sorry. I didn't come to complain. I want to apologize to you personally for not being a better employer.

KOKOMO: You haven't been bad, Ms. Jackson.

MS. JACKSON: Don't lie. I know I could've been much better to you. The truth is I haven't wanted to be: not since the day I hired you. I don't know if you can understand this. I saw so much of myself in you. I hated it - not because it was a bad thing - because it was good. The things I saw in you were things about me that I felt had never been properly appreciated. I permitted my resentment to stand in the way of my great admiration. I abused you. I'm sorry. Please accept my apology.

– ACT II, lines 4-12

FLETCHER: You thought Norfolk had a checkered past. Being a former prison colony's prison colony is nothing next to Pitcairn.

ALICE: I would never have imagined it was like that. I thought it was a paradise.

FLETCHER: I'm writing a play about it - specifically about the woman who chopped off that man's head. She's an ancestor of mine. Maybe later we can go over a few scenes.

ALICE: I'd love to.

FLETCHER: If your neck doesn't still hurt.

ALICE: I'm feeling much better now, thank you.

FLETCHER: If you strained it, you strained it. I have to say, you have surprisingly little tension.

ALICE: It's my honeymoon. I've been having lots of sex.

FLETCHER: You shouldn't have reminded me.

ALICE: Why not?

– ACT I, lines 626-635

LUKE: What's the difference between the two?

MS. JACKSON: Bounty families are descendant from the original Bounty mutineers, who settled on Pitcairn Island-

FLETCHER: With their Tahitian consorts. I'm sorry. I meant their Tahitian wives. And their Tahitian slaves. I mean, their male Tahitian friends.

MS. JACKSON: The Pitcairner families are descendant-

FLETCHER: From three adventurers - to be more precise, from two ack-willy whalers and a soldier-of-fortune.

LUKE: That's a ridgy-didge pedigree. Too right!

FLETCHER: It gets better. Being a direct descendant of my namesake, Fletcher Christian, the illustrious chief of the mutiny on the Bounty, I am therefore descendant from the ancient rulers of the Isle of Man.

LUKE: A reg'lar Pommy!

FLETCHER: My father's mother was a Quintal. That means half of him is descendant from a drunken scoundrel who set his ship on fire, drove his wife to suicide, and threatened to kill the entire island population. That's not the side of the story we like to tell. We prefer the story of how John Jackson turned to Christianity and taught his children to read and write. Jackson, I'll have you know, was a Christian before he became a Jackson. He changed his name the moment the British rediscovered the island. My mother admires his cowardice so much, she did the same thing.

Usage of Being in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

On the fourth day I read aloud again from Dostoyevsky's The Idiot. I was practicing my diction. After I got tired of reading I started thinking aloud. I was discussing with myself the imagery in the story. Relating it to my own situation. After amusing myself in this way I decided I was being silly. I sat in silence again. I thought about Barack and his twitching and the general ignorance of people.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes the mess we're in as people, though hopefully you're one of those helping to clean it up

I knew my sister was in love with one of them. So what? It didn't change anything. It didn't change our fate. We had the future of a population on our heads. You can't walk away from that. We had to fight to the death. Like it or not. Right up on that hill. In the middle of the cemetary. It seemed like the right place to do it. I think it was my brother's idea. Not Gaio. The middle one. Lucio. Like I said we didn't know who was the oldest or who was the youngest. But I always teased Gaio for being the romantic one. It made him the youngest. In my eyes.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on family values coming straight out of Roman mythology

Freedom from liability being the top concern for the Postal Service, something they called "safety," each new carrier assigned to Rural Route 6 was instructed to "watch out for" the postman on Rural Route 2. This involved craning one's head around the hedgerow. This is the instruction Mark the Magnificent received when Rural Route 6 become one of his regular leave replacement assignments. It was a task he followed diligently for about the first three days.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story about something horrible that unfortunately exists in real life

Steve O thought about Adam often. Usually after a break-up with a girl. He missed being able to share all the dirty secrets. For some reason Steve O had never found another friend like Adam. Their relationship had been unique.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that doesn't strive towards anything lofty, but what you make of it is up to you

That night Proctor was woken by a noise. He came downstairs to find an open window. The curtains were blowing in the wind. He heard the sound of a table being nudged along the floor. He drew his gun. With bated breath he inched towards the nearest light switch. He flipped it on. A raccoon jerked its head. Its eyes glowing. Proctor shut the light. He waited in silence for what seemed like hours. There was no one.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
