Officer, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's meditating on the thought of beefing up his extraordinary Fiction Corpus with more stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the soundness of implementing English as a worldwide language. I don't believe in the conventional recipe by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Upgrading a person's skills with a language isn't like developing a more comfortable bed. A language - a spoken language - is not just an instrument that you can learn to employ with a greater amount of precision. A language can't be dissected from the professed knowledge of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. An informed instructor has to find a method of introducing it; the prudent student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of written works of varying size and consistency. This corpus might include anything from a book about literature to a lot of fiction books. I burnt many candles laboring on my "gigantic" Fiction Corpus to form a peculiar genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have assembled a million words and I have divided them, reframing them - not just to teach English vocabulary but to describe the human soul, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you. But how to judge what we would want done to us if we've never been in somebody else's shoes? If we've never been abandoned by our mother, how do we treat somebody who has? Somebody who seems to constantly suffer the repurcussions of it? Margo and I had 46 days and 6,000 miles to try on each other's shoes. We had one car and one tent in which to hear each other's words. We learned to cooperate. We started learning how to listen.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Officer

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word officer in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word officer, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word officer is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Officer in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

I went to the bathroom to urinate. Next to me stood a young SECURITA officer with a lot to give. He seemed to be enjoying himself.

Verse 194 from the chapter called Bohemia

Jesus took the Krupnik's threats very seriously. There was nothing in his face that showed it - except for the tension maybe, but, then again, that was shared by all. It was also very dark in the room. Electricity was unavailable, and Jesus had no reason to think that his face, or one of its occasional twitches, was betraying any kind of nervousness or fear. Jesus was afraid - if only because he knew that there was no booby-trap: that was a bluff. Jesus had no idea whom to expect while sitting on that back step. If army intelligence officers had shown up to collect, Jesus would've been rather embarrassed to explain that their weapons were rigged to explode. They could've charged him with treason - not that this was no longer a threat, but Jesus's situation was considerably changed. His business partner hadn't been smart enough to consider the possible effects of Jesus's ignorance. As a result, when and if he were going to find out that he had been tricked, there'd be no telling what he'd do. He might have gone crazy; he might have told the Accountant, or his bodyguards (whatever the case might have been), to kill him. That was unacceptable. Jesus had to figure out what to do, but, while the Krupnik wrote his letter and signed it, while the Nigel signed it, and while the Krupnik drove him down to where the Accountant was, Jesus had absolutely no idea.

Verse 254 from the chapter called Arms

When the press began to say that Jesus's Confederation was based on Cathedral Island, Jesus did nothing to dispute it. The error was built on already existing confusion; Jesus didn't need to add to it. Besides, anyone who cared knew that Jesus had blocked off Sand Island, not the territory around the Cathedral. Nevertheless, the error stood. Your father liked to indulge it. Using a sawed-off bed-knob as a mace, Jesus wielded it the way field commanders of the Old Republic had once deployed their troops: by swinging it forward, left and right, always with a firm flick of the wrist, like the parish priest or bishop who blesses his congregation with holy water. Jesus used it whenever his officers met with him to discuss further operations. Inside the sacristy of the Blessed Virgin Mary's church, they would come to look at their biggest map, which had all of their troop positions marked. They kept it locked in a cupboard with other sensitive information, and, when they met, Jesus used his mace to point things out; he would bang the table with it. Jesus's men soon began to call him 'Bishop.' Your father had chosen the mace for its ancient distinction (Jesus felt like the primeval warrior), but the truth was (as Jesus seemed to remember it from his father's books) that the mace had indeed been carried into battle by medieval bishops, who had been barred from the use of swords for some ecclesiastical reason. Anyway, the name was apt. Jesus became the Bishop of Cathedral Island, leader of Confederate troops fighting for truth. Your father embraced his new surname, particularly because it captured his spiritual leadership, which he consciously, though somewhat erratically, pursued. The word was ancient. Most importantly of all, it punctuated his separate identity, the superiority of his office, the remoteness of his character, and, most unnervingly of all, Jesus's growing detachment.

Verse 474 from the chapter called Arms

On the way to his first - and, as it turned out, his last - hearing, Jesus's face was covered. The County Commandant and the County Sheriff had their offices right next to each other on the main road in Treblinka - right at the head of the main road to Wroclaw. They were manor houses, ancient palaces built centuries ago by wealthy residents, no doubt commandeered during some dark and long-forgotten age by the State. Jesus had been kept in the donjon, so to speak. On his way out, there was a crowd of salivating reporters vying for a statement, a crowd of photographers attempting to get his photograph, and lots and lots of video cameras recording Jesus's head being tucked into the giant arm of an anti-terrorist police officer wearing a black mask. Jesus's face was also covered with black cloth. He was famous - what a surprise. This is my father's legacy, thought Jesus.

Verse 168 from the chapter called Security

The Russian government was particularly supportive. Pumping a billion dollars into Panzer-Tank's war chest, the Russian government equipped and trained two entire divisions for the invasion force. Composed of fifty thousand volunteer Russian troops, this army corps was led by officers from the ranks of the Russian general staff. Each division was led by a major general who used to be, in the Russian army, a lieutenant general. These two major generals reported to a lieutenant general who, in the Russian army, used to be a general. This lieutenant general reported to a general who, as it happened, used to be a U.S. Army colonel. That's how important this war was to the Russian government.

Usage of Officer in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I had another dream last night, by the way. I suppose I've got plenty of time to describe it to you. It begins in the hospital, in a room not unlike the one in which I find myself. But, of course, in the dream, it seemed much more spacious. It was crowded with people, most of which I didn't recognize. Except for Rothko, they were all doctors and police officers. They were all very interested in seeing the patient: to see whether his condition was really improved - that is to say, whether all his members were functioning appropriately.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 8, Being a Victim, Paragraph 1

Nike was shocked. He was appalled. Police officers, despite being the worst kind of swine, should hold themselves with at least a little bit of respect, especially when they're idly standing along the Queensway of all vices. Nike was so ashamed he sat down near the bushes. Things were not going well. No one wanted to answer his questions unless he were going to negotiate business. Nike was not that foolhardy - at least, not yet: the pain was too much. But, because of it, he had to walk around like a grown man with rickets. Even the fat girls were laughing at him. Even the ugly girls, the cut girls, the destroyed and overly diseased girls were laughing at him. He was humiliated.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 10, Navigating the Socio-Political Spectrum, Paragraph 5

In fact, when Nike began prowling around the Bois de Boulogne that night, walking up and down the Allée de la La Reine Margo, he noticed more than one pair of gendarmes watching him from across the street, leaning against their patrol cars, arms crossed and almost uncontrollably chuckling. Nike had to give them the old 'up yours:' the one involving both arms - but, Nike was so furious, he leaned into his gesture, and his arm came up so forcefully that he accidentally punched himself in the head, which provoked, in that particular set of gendarmes who were privy to it, the most outrageous laughter ever to be witnessed in officers who otherwise were representing the only semblance of law to be seen (or cherished) in that most dark and seedy of places.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

His commanding officer, Captain Winthrop, was skeptical. "Captain," Lieutenant Peplowski said, "I know this guy. I checked his rap sheet. He did time for distribution. I'm telling you he's back in business. Why else would a guy like that have a twenty-foot pleasure craft?"

"For pleasure?" was the Captain's response.

Randy was always talking to him in golf metaphors. Ann was also ambitious. Instead of golf, she used the feminist approach. If either one of them caught wind of what he was doing, they would gossip. If the chief operations officer found out, he would tell Dorothea. That would be a disaster.

"Shut up," said the Captain, digging his knuckles into his desk. "You're lucky the Governor had his own naked business to attend to."

"How was I supposed to know the boat was owned by a parole officer?"

"By checking it out."

"And the bearded man?"

"That was the parole officer," said the Captain.

"The life jackets?"

"They were for his boat."

"What was he doing in Jersey?"

"That is none of your business, lieutenant."

"Stay here," said Proctor. "I'm going back to see John." When Proctor got to John's building, there was a squad car outside. An officer behind the wheel. Upstairs his partner stood outside John's door.

"Just you?" asked Proctor. The officer nodded. "Okay. Have a smoke."

"Thanks, boss." The man walked off. Proctor knocked on the door. When John opened it, Proctor busted it wide. He threw John against the wall.

I drove all the way to the beach to find relief. It took hours to get there. I stumbled into the woman's bar by accident. I knew it was around. I heard girls talking about it. I never thought I'd go. I assumed it was a waste of time. I was right. I didn't hook up with anybody. I tried to make conversation a few times. It didn't work. On my way home I got lost. I was so angry. When I saw the sign for the camping ground I had no idea it was for queers. I stopped to ask for directions.

The orbits of Captain Orbitz as told and retold by trillions of Orion systemizens, indeed systemizens from across many a galaxy, never fluctuated from their purpose of helping Captain Tycho "Tych" Orbitz conquer his home galaxy. Tych was firm from the day he resigned his commision as a courier in the Star Alliance to the day he vanished into space. Many were afraid he would come back. Many more hoped he would. They thought he was out pirating somewhere with Lalunia, his pheromonically irresistible great-great-great-great-niece, or ruling a planet with the beautifully blue Sara Lee, or fighting the jilted queen of the Astrazeneca or playing chess with CAROline the computer that loved him. They didn't know he was dead. They had no idea he had died long before he had even resigned his commission. Before he hijacked the tesseract marking the beginning of his rebellion or piloted the stolen ship Nautilus into the singularity the man had physically removed his own dead body from the bridge. He had no choice. At the time the ship was scheduled to be inspected by Star Alliance sanitation officers.

Are you a eunuch?

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
