Son, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's weighing the practicality of extending his cavernous Fiction Corpus with yet another science fiction book; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the possibility of promulgating English as a global standard. I don't have faith in the uninspiring tactics by which English is taught.Pointer

Honing one's command of a language isn't like promoting a smoother toilet paper. A language - a common tongue - is not merely a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A common tongue cannot be cleaved from the philosophical currents of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. An informed educator must prepare a plan for introducing it; the discerning student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a specific corpus, a body of written works of varying size and consistency. A corpus may contain anything from a book about literature to some truly brilliant literature novels. I burnt many candles forging my "enormous" Fiction Corpus to form a different genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have crafted a million words and I have codified them, reframing them - not merely to teach a language but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to provoke that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Son

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word son in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word son, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word son is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Son in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

This development was not rapid: it was slow and steady. Jesus was only ten years old. He wasn't a born rebel: he was made. No matter how comfortable he felt doing what he did, he was always detached from the role - that's all it ever was. On the inside, Jesus developed a separate personality, away from prying eyes, but, unfortunately, growing, after his mother died, more and more isolated.

Verse 234 from the chapter called Childhood

None of this would have mattered, of course, if safety guidelines had been appropriate: there was no need for bottled air on Earth: all you needed was a face mask with a filter! But people were just stupid! They needed to wear fancy bottles like the rich people on Mars. They had to be just like the Martians! They convinced themselves it was necessary! The bottled air industry helped, of course, but people did it to themselves! They were maniacs! It was, by far, the worst case of collective craziness in history: far worse than Tulip Mania, which only lasted a generation! This mania kept going: passing from father to son, mother-in-law to daughter-in-law: each one equally convinced that air bottles were absolutely indispensable. Finally, someone had to make it law: somebody somewhere in some treaty made it international law: every mask had to be attached (on purchase) to a bottle by a licensed mask and bottle distributor - just like on Mars, where it actually mattered: where your life depended on it. What crazy person made that happen? What greed was behind it? Nobody knew, and few people cared. The only real solution to this problem was cleaner air.

Verse 79 from the chapter called Childhood

Usage of Son in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

"There's one across the river at Wilson and Lexington. My aunt's latest creation is undergoing trials right now. They take two full years, testing everything possible: from disease resistance, to fragrance, to color, to the form of the flower and the bud, how it grows, you name it. The thing is, they want a rose that's beautiful and easy to grow; that way, it'll sell." Macy had a quibble with this. Of course he loved the idea of prize-winning roses, and he especially appreciated the fact that the Rose Selections took two whole years to make their judgment. "I think that's wonderfully scientific, and so incredibly patient." Most other prizes, he supposed, seemed to rely solely on people's opinions, although prize juries and judging panels that made decisions in camera were, on the whole, much more preferable than organizations like "that awful Academy that has its members mail in their votes. How do you know they even saw the nominees? that they weren't bribed?" But quite apart from the quality of judging, Macy had a problem with the way all prizes seemed to be geared toward the market. "I'm not surprised that mass-produced culture suffers from this disease; making a movie is expensive; the industry employs a lot of people, and if things don't sell, there's no turnover: people are out of business.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 9, Attacking homosexuality, Paragraph 1, Clauses 4-14

I know that I've always been playful, which is something that a modest person does not usually reveal until well acquainted with another. Perhaps it was the misguided intimacy - the forceful breach of inhibition - that tightened and then relaxed our excited bodies. I suppose not everyone enjoys being playful, but I believe that boy was thrilled, and perhaps he, thinking me a student, sincerely hoped for another, less ephemeral encounter. But I knew it would not happen, and he, poor fool, may have dreamt of it last night. I certainly have had dreams on less hopeful prospects. How odd it is, how strangely odd, that the basis for romance and friendship must seem so fantastically random, and the requirements which permit these things to blossom, the structure of tastes and considerations, being so irrationally determined, or else so deliberately particular, how odd indeed that any relationship take strong root and thrive at all.

Usage of Son in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The first lesson of womanizing had been learned. It was not to be the last. At another party Steve O set his sights on the pretty redhead playing his daughter. She taught him his second lesson. A womanizer must respect not only his elders but his peers. As Steve O came back with her beer he found her making out with the freshman playing Steve O's son. His name was Adam and he was pretty.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that doesn't strive towards anything lofty, but what you make of it is up to you

I'm not angry. My wife is a sensitive person. I understand that. I'm counting on it. Eventually my wife's sense of smell and her lust and perhaps even her sense of justice will overcome her sense of pride.

– from “The Backed-Up Toilet,” a literature story based on somebody's real life, namely the author's

I discovered a beautiful pavilion. Completely abandoned. Pristine toilet followed pristine toilet. I commenced spewing all over. Grunting and panting through the intervals. I shat half my body weight before I heard somebody come inside. This person was going from toilet to toilet. Opening every door. I was afraid my gut wasn't the only thing about to be liquidated. My unseen nemesis banged on my stall. I calmly ignored it. I dispensed half a roll of paper. I cleaned everything up. I don't remember if I flushed. When I opened the door the largest woman I have ever seen snarled at me and started shouting. I have no idea what she was saying. It sounded like a lot. She followed me out of the pavilion and halfway back to the stadium. I was sure if I didn't lose myself in the crowd she would find me and have me killed. That was the end of my trip.

– from “The Most Idiotic Actress,” a fictional story based on true life as related to the author

I was surprised how close the camp was to my house. I never knew it was there. I never used to go in that direction. I started driving up to see Kelly every day. I told her I was coming to say hi. I was trying to figure out if she was into me. I kept wanting to invite her out for a drink but she was underage. I'd ask if she was thirsty. She'd let me buy her a bottle of water from the camp. I'd give her money. She'd insist on giving me the bottle. Then I'd give it right back. I didn't think it was going anywhere.

– from “Two Years,” an adult fiction story about a guard who works at a women's prison

Orbitz pretended to consider the offer. It was obviously out of the question. Marriott's CPU was all the way in the Orion cluster. That's where he was heading. To steal her. There was no reason to waste time on a interstellar download. "Not now," said Orbitz. "There'll be time for that."

"How do I know?" asked a voice. It was coming from the door to the corridor. A man stepped onto the bridge. Except for the scars on his body he looked just like Orbitz.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
