Uncle, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is ruminating on the viability of enhancing his colossal Fiction Corpus with yet another book; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the possibility of harnessing English as an international language for the world. I don't trust in the debilitating modus operandi by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Fortifying a person's dexterity with a language isn't like launching a more informative newspaper. A language - a living language - isn't just a tool that you can learn to wield with a greater amount of precision. A shared tongue can't be split from the prevailing culture of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make students recite English is to deprive them of its cultural context. An informed instructor must create a strategy for introducing it; the perceptive student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying size and consistency. They might include everything from a biography of the best fiction authors to a whole bunch of fiction characters. I watched many nights pass creating my "ordinary" Fiction Corpus to form a special class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have divided them, reformulating them - not simply to teach an American tongue but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to provoke that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Uncle

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word uncle in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word uncle, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word uncle is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Uncle in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

There they were that night, walking arm in arm. They walked in silence. When they got to his uncle's house, Jesus used his own key: the one his uncle had given him when he was thirteen years old, when his mother had died. Once they were inside, they made love. Jesus put his penis into his aunt's vagina. "Good," she told him. "So good."

Verse 590 from the chapter called Adolescence

For generations before that tragic explosion (and the other one that followed it), the use of fossil fuels on Earth had been, generally speaking, limited. Subject to strict regulation and prohibitive taxation, most of it had gone to the planet Mars, the cost of transport being cheaper for oil than for any other potential source of energy, and, thanks to general tax relief and subsidies for processes like coal liquefaction, this export of fossil fuels was actively encouraged. When Yellowstone exploded, this trend was immediately reversed: export was discouraged while taxation and restrictions for consumption on Earth were quickly repealed. This move was meant to help the unfortunate ones who either needed a fast and easy source of energy or heat or else required the speed and mobility that oil and gas fueled internal-combustion engines offered. These people were not just Americans; they lived all across the globe - a globe now darkened by layers upon layers of atmospheric haze that made large photovoltaic power systems, based upon thousands of silicon and gallium arsenide solar cells, incapable of meeting the urgent energy needs of a suffering planet. Fossil fuel consumption was allowed to grow despite the knowledge that fossil fuel emissions would only make the Earth's atmosphere even more unclean.

Verse 6 from the chapter called Security

Sitting on the back step, holding a pistol in his hands, Jesus had no idea whom to expect. Which side? Anything was possible. The terrorists were, no doubt, in need of resupply, but who would represent them? Who could've made all the arrangements? And if these weapons were destined for honest men, what were they doing here in his uncle's backroom? The Silesian Air Squadron didn't need them. The 2nd Infantry was broke; they needed weapons, but who was going to pay for them? Perhaps this was a way of getting them cheap. "Who knows?" said Jesus. "Perhaps they received a budget increase."

Verse 16 from the chapter called Arms

"Thank you. That's very generous. Your uncle's very generous; did you know that?"

Verse 353 from the chapter called Adolescence

"After Andrew's father died, his uncle adopted him. He sent him to college; he was good to him. But when he fell in love with a German girl, neither the Commandant nor his wife would let him marry. Andrew said, 'If I can't marry her, then I'm not going to marry anyone' - so it's been for all these years. I told him to reconsider, but, nowadays, what woman wants to be a farmer's wife? Especially for a dirty, two-bit farmer like him: with five teeth!

You, on the other hand: you were still fishing around for that ball, and only after our father and our uncle came through the house with Albert did you finally come walking up that hill. I remember the moment distinctly: our father was joking that Albert being Hungarian, and Indiana being Romanian, we had the better part of the old Austrian empire assembled before us. Indiana began elaborating the joke, and, as she neared a punch line, you appeared, wet and out of breath, just in time to watch everyone heartily laugh - everyone but me and Indiana, of course. You had no idea what the joke was, and, as if searching for an explanation, you had to look around quickly, ignoring me (of course), before transfixing your eyes on the source of everyone's merriment.

Usage of Uncle in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I was taken to a football game. Not at a stadium. More like a field with a stand. My uncle called it "The Moldavian Wembley." This is where my stomach caught up with me. At some point during the first half I rushed out to find a toilet. The only permament structure I found had a long line sticking out of it. The portable toilets were crowded. I decided to find something further afield. At the very least a bush.

"I always made a small drop. I wanted it to be in the shape of a coin. I knew Albert was in business. He was always coming to Romania, where I lived, to visit his uncle. He would smile at me all the time. I wanted to show my friends my husband would be a businessman like Albert. They told me, 'No cheating.'

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might calm one's sense of anxiety depending on your outlook

I met family. I was introduced to a long lost uncle. Some cousins. Things were going great. Until I realized none of these people spoke Ukrainian. They spoke Moldovan. They assured me it was basically Romanian. It didn't help. All the books I had bought were for Ukrainian. All the time I wasted preparing for the trip was spent learning Ukrainian phrases. I was reduced to a repeating series of infantile gestures and nods of my head. I felt supremely embarrassed until the alcohol finally kicked in.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
