Woman, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is considering the viability of extending his jumbo-sized Fiction Corpus with a fairy tale about modern art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the feasibility of harnessing English as a common language for the world. I do reject the altogether ordinary system by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Refining one's know-how with a language isn't like launching a more valuable coin. A language - a living language - isn't just an instrument that you can learn to wield with greater amounts of precision. A common tongue cannot be disassociated from the competing values of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. A capable teacher must develop a plan for introducing it; the prudent student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language based on a particular corpus, a body of writing of various size and consistency. This corpus may include everything from a book about literature to many books of fiction. I suffered many a sleepless night laboring on my "colossal" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have pieced together a million words and I have broken them down, reshaping them - not merely to teach American vocabulary but to describe the human spirit, and to provoke that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Woman

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word woman in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word woman, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word woman is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Woman in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"Look at me," she whined. "I'm the most misproportioned woman on the planet. I've got huge Martian feet; short, stubby Japanese legs; a gigantic forehead; no chin."

Verse 794 from the chapter called Security

Jesus's father was beyond tears. My sister's disappearance caused only more lethargy and more heroin use. Before long, he refused to eat. He refused to get up out of bed. He stopped selling the few books he had left. If not for the robbery, Jesus would've been forced to sell the television, or worse, the radio. He had stolen six hundred dollars from the Krupnik. My grandmother had once told me the story of how she had robbed an old woman of half a round of cheese and all her bread. "You have not sinned," said the priest. "You did not take her food out of spite or for pleasure, but because you were hungry." Jesus only spent a third of his booty on bread.

"Was it good?" I asked. "Robbing a Krupnik?"

Verses 665-666 from the chapter called Adolescence

It was a gift from God: a challenge for enterprising men like your father. It was a grace granted Earth and Mars and in between. It was something unexceptional: commonplace and yet needing to be treasured. It was sorrowful and joyful. It was painful and painless - the joy of emancipation expected. It was happiness waiting to be unlocked - a beggar in bad straits. It was a noble man, a noble woman: nobility impoverished. It was rich, exceedingly wealthy and privileged - seated in front of me, it looked at me and blushed. It needed love. It needed to be raped: plucked from the ungrateful ground in which it found itself and replanted. It was a miracle we met. It was God's will. It was your mother, my child: your beautiful mother, Zoe Guderian, after whom you are named.

Verse 441 from the chapter called Bohemia

Oh God! Your mother was so beautiful. She was a diamond ring! A blessed creature! She died! God! She died! Zeus: creature of dust! You took her! You chopped off her head! Placed her in death and destruction! I loved your mother. She was a good woman. She trusted me. In the end, she trusted me. I loved her.

Verse 3 from the chapter called Invocation

His first victories came in the local courts of Poland, where he moved from village to village with his sickly wife, accusing his richer neighbors of negligently causing her pain and suffering by triggering her status athmaticus with their wantonly placed piles of pig manure, with their lack of strip-cropping or any other method of controlling wind erosion, or, most of all, with their highly tortious and completely unacceptable practices of burning crop stubble and debris after harvest: how could the benefits of weed control and a little potash compare to the precious health of his beloved wife, who was now bedridden for months as a result of this gross negligence. Kill those disgusting nematodes with chemicals, but please don't clear the ground with open flame! Use propane-gas, no matter how expensive it is - that woman's life depends on it! And for these many months of lost work: please compensate!

Usage of Woman in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I was too exhausted to be angry; but Barbara's relief was short-lived: pretty soon she was completely unhinged, bawling like a child with a broken home. I told her she had gotten more money than anyone else, but this only made her cry more. She was very sorry that she had dragged me down all the way from Jersey just for this to happen.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 7, Dating a Woman with Dogs, Paragraph 11, Clauses 1-3

After Nike left us, we went back to Vinnie's. Before long, the auction started and Luke began reassuring Barbara that he would help jack up the price. I told him to stop being silly; we had only been kidding and if Luke actually started bidding he would only ruin the poor girl's reputation. Instead, I offered my own services: if the need should arrive, I would start a bidding war. Barbara loved the idea. "You'll make all the guys jealous!" she said, and she told me to do it anyway; but I had to laugh because I wasn't really serious when I said it. But before I could say that, something happened and Barbara's attention was taken away. I was left feeling obliged; Barbara's turn was coming up, and just as I was wondering what sort of impression I would make, our collusion was trumped by the two girls in front: they started making out.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 7, Dating a Woman with Dogs, Paragraph 3

While I was recollecting myself, my eyes happened upon the beggar and the crowd of students gathered around him. I watched as one of those Oxford-wearing snakes began prodding that poor despicable man; I believe he even whispered something to him - he must have: next thing I know that dirty man was raising his arm and bidding two hundred dollars. "They're financing him!" I said to myself, and turning to Luke, I looked imploringly in his eyes. He was shaking his head: "I don't have that much money," he said. It was time to take matters into my own hands.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 7, Dating a Woman with Dogs, Paragraph 9

I suppose I shall have to explain everything from the beginning. Apparently, the senior class committee or whatever it is decided to hold a date auction as part of festivities for senior week. Now being a good senior, and having plenty of friends, and not being shy about quantifying her appeal as a woman, Barbara decided what great fun it would be to be auctioned off in front of her many admirers, and since many of her own friends would be selling themselves too, there would be very little pressure to maximize her yield, as she was confident, and rightly so, that a date with herself is worth, at the very least, as much as a date with any of her friends, to whom she feels not only love and admiration, but a slight sense of superiority, as that is a gorgeous woman's way.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

"Are you sure it was a woman?"

"Her tits were falling out of her crop top. She's dressed like a nun."

"Sounds kinky."

"She's got a veil and almost everything."

"I want to see her."

"That's the problem. She ran off."

"Why?"

"I have no idea. She refused money."

"What kind of hooker does that?"

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring the beautiful world of Paris

The woman stared at it. She pursed her lips. She asked, "For how long?"

Nike smiled. "It's up to you. I can take you wherever you want."

"I don't understand."

"What's the problem? Do you want me to swear I won't hurt you? You're not going to be safer out here. All I want to do is talk."

"Why?"

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring an interesting description of human anatomy

Nike stuffed the bills into her palms. He wrapped his own hands around hers. He whispered, "I don't believe you."

Barbara squirmed. A phone rang. The sound came from Nike's pocket.

"Your phone," whispered Barbara. She looked pleadingly into Nike's eyes. "It's ringing."

Nike wanted to ignore it. Barbara started wrenching her hands. He had no choice. He let go. He watched the woman squeeze past the shoulders of spotlighted freaks.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring not-so-beautiful people

The woman considered the question. She replied, "I was told to come."

Nike nodded. "By whom?"

A moment passed. The woman suddenly turned.

"Wait!" She stopped. Nike observed her. "You're very beautiful."

"I have to go."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: You were trying to sneak away.

MS. JACKSON: Your father-

LESBIAN: What's the big idea?

MS. JACKSON: Listen.

LESBIAN: Your mother and I can do whatever the hell we please.

FLETCHER: Whenever the kids aren't looking.

MS. JACKSON: Fletch!

LESBIAN: Your mother is a grown woman.

FLETCHER: Why doesn't she act like it?

MS. JACKSON: That's enough.

– ACT I, lines 973-982

ALICE: I forgive you. Be a man once more.

FLETCHER: With a man's heart, I thank you. No longer must you fear my advances. The object of our intimacy has been achieved. I intend to follow your lead and pledge my life to the woman I love.

ALICE: Do I know her?

FLETCHER: You do. I love Kokomo with all my heart. My soul yearns for her soul's touch.

ALICE: In that case, let's finish these scenes in celebration of your restored manhood and your love for Kokomo.

FLETCHER: I know just the right page from which to start. 'What a blessed thing it is to confess! The firmly wound nut, when leashed to its bolt, will weather every blow. No strain is so big, no pressure so strong, no hand so steady, nor no patience so long that would eventually break the metal's hold when applied to just one end. It would turn forevermore in tantalizing defiance. Bring two solid hands together - with two worthy hearts - one to hold tight the bolt, the other to untwist his soul - and you shall feel the immediate release that with it brings joy, the work of resolution, and the ease which maketh that work seem slight.'

ALICE: Well proclaimed, poet!

FLETCHER: If only the rest were so good.

ALICE: I have no doubt it will be.

FLETCHER: As a show of thanks for your faith, I hereby expunge certain kisses from this scene, restoring to its solitary glory the one final kiss of the scene's end - if I may be so bold.

– ACT II, lines 194-203

FLETCHER: You thought Norfolk had a checkered past. Being a former prison colony's prison colony is nothing next to Pitcairn.

ALICE: I would never have imagined it was like that. I thought it was a paradise.

FLETCHER: I'm writing a play about it - specifically about the woman who chopped off that man's head. She's an ancestor of mine. Maybe later we can go over a few scenes.

ALICE: I'd love to.

FLETCHER: If your neck doesn't still hurt.

ALICE: I'm feeling much better now, thank you.

FLETCHER: If you strained it, you strained it. I have to say, you have surprisingly little tension.

ALICE: It's my honeymoon. I've been having lots of sex.

FLETCHER: You shouldn't have reminded me.

ALICE: Why not?

– ACT I, lines 626-635

KOKOMO: It's easy. The very thought of prostituting myself makes me sick to my stomach. All I have to do is stick my finger in.

FLETCHER: I assure you, Mother, to the modern woman it comes quite naturally.

GREY GOOSE: They do it all the time.

MS. JACKSON: You knew about this?

FLETCHER: Know about it? He was twisting my arm for a bigger cut.

GREY GOOSE: I deserve it. I'm the one who brought in those big spenders. John the orthodontist?

FLETCHER: He wanted everything just right.

GREY GOOSE: Michael the podiatrist?

KOKOMO: He put his foot in it.

GREY GOOSE: Rob the general practitioner?

– ACT II, lines 441-450

LESBIAN: I'm proud of that.

MS. JACKSON: I want to show you love. I want to give you a home you can finally call your own.

LESBIAN: I know.

MS. JACKSON: We can be together. We don't have to hide. We can live here. This is my house.

LESBIAN: I understand it's important to you. You're a part of this place. You're a part of its charm, its beauty, its isolation, and its loneliness. I am not. I have lived a different kind of separation.

MS. JACKSON: Leave that life. Settle down with me.

LESBIAN: I desire you with every breath of life. I need you out on the open sea.

MS. JACKSON: Why can't you stop?

LESBIAN: Asking me to stop is madness. Darling, if you were to abandon this place, what would it mean? You'd be leaving the site of your seduction: the land of your shame. Who's to say we wouldn't return? By then, you would be a different woman. Is that what you're afraid of? Rebirth?

MS. JACKSON: Hold me. Never let me go.

Usage of Woman in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Management, rather than allow any rural route to permanently profit from this massive windfall of mail, decided it didn't have time to settle the issue immediately. Yet dictator Steve the Second somehow found time to drive out to Profile and Login every single day to personally deliver one woman's mail. Until he could hire and train a temp to do it for him.

The rural union filed a grievance. Of course a month was not enough time to arbitrate a local matter. Not with the National Mail Count on the horizon. There were grievances all over.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story that represents things that have actually happened, though the details are fictional

Grendel went to the library after school. She found a book about bodies. It had pictures of naked girls in it. One girl looked like her. The others were taller. They were standing next to a woman with fat breasts. There were pictures of boys too. Each one hairier than the next. Grendel's heart leapt into her throat. She quickly put the book away.

– from “Little Grendel's First Hair,” a fairy tale story where the horrible happens not entirely unlike the real world

The first lesson of womanizing had been learned. It was not to be the last. At another party Steve O set his sights on the pretty redhead playing his daughter. She taught him his second lesson. A womanizer must respect not only his elders but his peers. As Steve O came back with her beer he found her making out with the freshman playing Steve O's son. His name was Adam and he was pretty.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that doesn't strive towards anything lofty, but what you make of it is up to you

Grendel kept coming back to the book. She read about penises and vaginas. She learned about sexual intercourse. It had to do with a man and a woman in bed kissing. Like her mother and the ogre. There was a picture of it but it didn't look anything like a man or a woman. It was squiggly lines.

– from “Little Grendel's First Hair,” a fairy tale story where the terrible happens not entirely unlike the real world

I don't know who decided to make first contact with the woman or who invited her down to our camp but that's where she ended up. She was staying for dinner. Her name was Mary. I thought to myself this is what happens to a hipster's child when he doesn't inherit a bed and breakfast. I wanted to ask Mary about her upbringing but she was too busy sharing with us a finger-painted monist philosophy. She kept mentioning the armature of the universe. She had taken some studio art classes otherwise I doubt she would know the word. She said the armature was penetrating each of us like an alien probe. I decided to beat her at her own game. I brought up the concept of the noosphere and Teilhard de Chardin's unification of consciousness. She had no idea what I was talking about. I hoped her confusion would cow her into shutting up. It didn't.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
