Group, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to contemplate the potency of strengthening his walloping Fiction Corpus with a bunch of romance fiction books; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the idea of promulgating English as everyone's second language. I do doubt the irksome plan by which English is taught.Pointer

Improving one's handiness with a language isn't like promoting a warmer piece of cloth. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to use with a greater amount of precision. A living language can't be disentangled from the shared logic of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. An informed teacher must have a blueprint for introducing it; the bravest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a particular corpus, a set of written language of various size and consistency. They could contain everything from a book about calendars to a whole collection of book reviews. I burned many candles developing my "herculean" Fiction Corpus to form a new sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have crafted a million words and I have enumerated them, reshaping them - not merely to teach a language but to promote the human spirit, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

My plane touched down in Poland on June 20th. A month later I was in Austria. Two days later, Slovenia. The next day, Croatia. A week later, Italy. The next day, Switzerland. The next day, France. The next day, Germany. The next day, Belgium. The next day, Holland. All with a woman I had met my first weekend on the Continent.

Though I felt fully formed as a writer, and had been trained in visual language, it was my first time with a professional camera in my hands. I was just learning the ins and outs and had come to Europe to find as diverse a selection of subject matter as possible, preferably something that fit my aesthetic devotion to promoting body acceptance. Enter Margo.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Group

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word group in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word group, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word group is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

A group is a place you go to when you're having trouble doing things on your own and you need to sap energy from other people in order to keep going. Usage of Group in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"By the way, did you switch groups?"

"What?"

Verses 685-686 from the chapter called Security

Hell's Ditch ran west through the orchards. At a certain point, it ceased being the gully it was and became truly a ditch. From this point, there were indirect ways north through the orchards that led, ultimately, to Peaceful Road and Treblinka's Communal Cemetery, where Jesus's father was buried and where Jesus had his tent. Unfortunately, it was getting dark. "See those flags?" said Jesus, pointing down the valley to the northeast. "Those are the flags of the stadium. That's where your group - the one you're registered with - is sleeping."

Verse 600 from the chapter called Security

"You're registered in Group Twenty-five. You gave your luggage to Group Five. I found you, on the road to Treblinka, in Group Fifteen, and now: we're in the middle of Group Twenty-seven."

Verse 305 from the chapter called Security

"That's him alright." The horse began trotting. "He would do a thing like that. 'Not in my group,' he probably said."

"What are we going to do?" asked Zoe.

Verses 691-692 from the chapter called Security

"I would take you down to the crypt," said Jesus, "but it's always locked. One time, I went down there with a group of German tourists. Artifacts from the original church are displayed down there, and, even after the tourists left, I remained to examine them. The turnkey was a very fat, old woman. She was very upset that I was still there."

Usage of Group in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

So Indiana was right, I thought. He is trying to drink all the wine.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 12, Approaching Individuals in a Group Setting, Paragraph 5

It was dark, but now the lights were on. A group of ugly men began gathering around his bed. Nike was wide awake long before he dared open his eyes. The lights meant only one thing: criminals. He was not surprised: this sort of thing had happened once to his father. He had been a witness. He had been frightened.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 4, The Fourth Day, Part 1, Our Constitution & Constitutional Reform, Section 2, Dealing with Creditors, Paragraph 1

I'm supposed to be describing to you the Piano Kiss Party - the 'infamous' Piano Kiss Party by now, and you have been patiently waiting for its description, I'm sure. But now I'm afraid I'm altogether too upset. Although I suppose I already began describing it...and I ought to finish... Teasing you like that would be unfair. But, I have done it before.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 12, Approaching Individuals in a Group Setting, Paragraph 1

ANDY: Well...there are lots of heroes. It follows a group of soldiers - actually, they're soldier slash priests.

CHR: Really?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 10, Bringing Up a Sore Subject, Paragraphs 34-35

But once these things are grouped together, no criterion but taste is specific enough to distinguish between them; in this way, taste is subject to qualification. Do you see what I'm saying? You see, if one were judging an Olympic race, where time is measured by the millisecond, and we know that only one athlete will get the gold, one would still have to concede that each contestant is among the very best, and therefore equally capable of winning if circumstances permit. Unless of course, the race is run several times and there is always the same clear winner. But then that person belongs in a category of his own, sui generis, which, I suppose, might be construed to mean that he is the best, which also means that I am defeating my own argument.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 1, Section 1, Introduction, Paragraph 1, Clauses 25-29

As soon as Junior spent himself, he could watch Purse perform for hours on end, lying butt-naked, chain-smoking Macanudos, sandwiched between a group of lovely, underage Mexicans.
