Coast, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's wrestling with the practicality of enhancing his massive Fiction Corpus with a book about artwork; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the concept of upholding English as a universal standard. I do question the prevailing process by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Reenforcing one's knowledge of a language isn't like making a brighter firework. A language is not merely a tool that you can learn to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A living tongue can not be uncoupled from the professed knowledge of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make students recite English is to cheat them out of its cultural context. A proper teacher has to prepare a plan for introducing it; the prudent pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of written works of varying scope and consistency. A corpus may contain everything from a book about literature to a bunch of romance fiction books. I created my "enormous" Fiction Corpus in order to form a special kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have reduced them, reshaping them - not merely to teach a language but to reveal the human spirit, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

By the end of my first week in Europe in 2011, I had bought a car and out of the blue had met the woman who would join me on a 6,000 mile trek across the European continent, sharing the beat-up car that I had bought and the one small tent from Walmart that I had brought along with me on my flight.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Coast

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word coast in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word coast, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word coast is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Coast in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"The funny thing is: we never got lost. Every time we thought we were lost, we stopped, asked for directions, and it turned out we were on the right road. That happened about twenty times. But worst of all was near the end: they built so many new roads around here, I thought we were really lost. Turned out, just like all the other times, we weren't being patient enough: we kept turning off the road too soon. We hadn't seen the sign yet 'cause we hadn't gotten to it. But how many people we had to wake up to find out! At three in the morning! Two hundred kilometers or whatever it was, we had taken ten hours to cross. Every time we were going at a steady pace, which, for us, meant top speed on level terrain (the only time we were going any faster was coasting downhill), I looked at the speedometer and it said fifty-five kilometers an hour: there was no way that was true. It never fell below thirty even if we were crawling along. Oh, but we blew a tire! That was a god-awful disaster. It took a whole hour to change. My grandfather was so stubborn: he had to do it himself. And then the car rolled off the jack - what a mess! In the pouring rain!

And we're talking about Indiana, which means her behavior was remarkably erratic. Her emotions were something worse than five rollercoasters put together: she would be high one moment and low the next - there wasn't even a climb up or a fall down: just up, then down - the most exciting thing I've ever seen or lived - at least in low doses: I couldn't deal with those feelings for long.

Tae waited for Kwon. When he arrived, he testified he had found the shore empty. "I checked the pit," he said. "I saw somebody there. I didn't think to make sure who it was. I know now it must have been Jutsu. I went to search the coast. When I came back, the pit was uncovered. Jutsu was on the bottom-dead. I assume he fell trying to get out. His head must have been split open by a rock."

Tae asked, "Are you sure he was alive when you first passed?"

– from “How Tae & Bo Took Over the World and Kung & Fu Didn't,” an apocryphal bible story featuring a frank discussion of women's breasts

An ocean spread wide, rippling multitudinously, pinned seemingly by the marbled plumes of the nebula. Tae's heart leapt. Bo had to be here. She had to be alive. He approached the sea slowly with reverence. Water splashed his ankles. It got deeper. All of a sudden, Tae fell into a deep trench. He had to swim onto dry land. Ahead of him stretched a vast coast. In the other direction, another river cut into the shoreline. It disappeared between low-lying hills.

– from “How Tae & Bo Took Over the World and Kung & Fu Didn't,” an apocryphal bible story featuring a microcosm of society

Censorship says everything...as should modern wall art

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
