College, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's mulling over the notion of expanding his cavernous Fiction Corpus with one more story about love; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the potential of honoring English as a worldwide standard. I don't have faith in the pleasureless model by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Perfecting a person's expertness with a language isn't like launching a more resilient bow. A language - a living language - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A living tongue can't be sequestered from the competing values of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make pupils recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A capable teacher has to find a way to introduce it; the prudent student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words based on a specific corpus, a body of written works of various size and consistency. A corpus may contain anything from a book about literature to many truly brilliant literature stories. I burned many candles laboring on my "epic" Fiction Corpus to form a peculiar type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have assembled a million words and I have enumerated them, reformulating them - not merely to teach an American tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

I've never been married. I've never been divorced. I've never had kids. I've never lost my kids. That doesn't mean I can't try to understand somebody who has. By listening to Margo during our trip across Europe I started to consider her needs as if they were my own. I may not have been in a position to satisfy all of those needs, but I was able to shut up and put my own needs aside if I had to for at least 6,000 miles. We all need to be listened to and it is the one need that we all have a duty to satisfy. When somebody prays to another human, as a human you have a duty to listen. Humanity needs to start teaching itself that skill.

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word College

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word college in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word college, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word college is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"After Andrew's father died, his uncle adopted him. He sent him to college; he was good to him. But when he fell in love with a German girl, neither the Commandant nor his wife would let him marry. Andrew said, 'If I can't marry her, then I'm not going to marry anyone' - so it's been for all these years. I told him to reconsider, but, nowadays, what woman wants to be a farmer's wife? Especially for a dirty, two-bit farmer like him: with five teeth!

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

The very next night, Macy and I were at some stupid party; loud and dark and sticky, it was a standard college affair: many different liquids being spilled and shared. In fact, I had just gotten beer spilled all over my jacket, and consequently was not in the best of moods (I was not yet drunk, mind you).

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 6, Third Party Intervention, Paragraph 2, Clauses 1-2

However, I did get a nice refresher course not so long ago; and what a strange coincidence that it was all thanks to Babs! You remember Barbara: my ever so young college friend; I met her the same night I wrote you that letter. And of course! I distinctly remember trying to describe her to you, or rather, more precisely, to present her in a way that might entice you: that whole bit about her phone number - which I still have for you by the way: it's never too late. She'll be graduated soon; I don't think she has any plans. But, I suppose, you're too far away for the time being. Besides, it may in fact be too late. You know she's really quite attractive, more so now than when she was younger: nature has taken its time to refine her features; she doesn't have to do much to help it. She only bleaches her teeth once in a while, and not because she's vain but because she's addicted to coffee, which is perhaps the worst of her faults - and only because I know you hate coffee.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 6, Judging Looks, Paragraph 4

From somewhere beyond the immediate crowd of well-dressed and flashy college students, from somewhere on the periphery there came a deep and unfamiliar voice to stake its claim: "Fitty dolla!" said the voice, causing the whole room to twist its drunken neck and heave its giant head. With such a generous frame, it didn't take me long to register the image of a large black man on the edge of the crowd; but it took the sniggering and the open laughter of a large part of it before I realized: this was no ordinary black man. It was a beggar from Prospect Street.

The man nodded. He mentioned he was a classmate. The woman gave him a frosty smile. "In college," said the man, "he was known as Mr. 'Whoa.'"

"That's funny," replied the woman. "I didn't know he was Chinese." She thought it was clever. She repeated it to Shephard when he came back. He had a good idea who was waiting for him.

"Clark," he said, entering the conference room. "What are you doing?"

"I've come to see you."

Usage of College in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Daniel was right. All of a sudden Sir Lewis had his answer. He would be a pain in the ass. He would do something he never imagined himself doing. He would enroll in community college. He would take Miss Day's class.

Daniel thought Sir Lewis was being an idiot. His mother thought he was throwing his life away. But Sir Lewis had to do it. He had to make a sacrifice for love.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about making connections in an unforgiving world

Time was called. 73.2 percent. Sir Lewis dashed down the number. It was a decent guess. It might be worth partial credit. He looked to his teammates. They were dumbfounded. The dork and the chubby Asian girl from the community college. Idiots.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about love in an unforgiving world

Miss Day announced more good news after the victory. She had gotten a job. As soon as she graduated she'd be teaching at the same community college they had competed with two years ago. With any luck, she'd be proctoring the next Olympiad.

Sir Lewis was heart-broken. He had never told Miss Day how he felt. Now she was leaving.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about the romantic struggle we all face

In college, the question came up again. In the middle of executing the procedure, obviously under the influence of alcohol, Steve O was taken aback by a sudden tanginess to the meal. It intrigued him. He explored further. Deeper. When he realized what he was doing he stopped. He was in shock.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that should be taken lightly, but what you make of it is up to you

Nike passed Indiana the joint. She took a long time to get it to her mouth. She claimed she was worried about lighting her hair on fire. "It's so oily," she said. "I haven't washed it in days. Why did I tell you that? You're giving me too much to drink. What are you trying to do? Get me to sleep with you? I'm not some kind of college girl - not anymore. What am I saying? I never went to college."

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
