Desert, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's thinking about the soundness of augmenting his unheroic Fiction Corpus with an entire set of drama plays; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the potency of exercising English as a universal standard. I don't accept the unimaginative game plan by which English is taught.Pointer

Refining a person's skills with a language isn't like creating a more accurate catapult. A language - a living language - isn't just an instrument that you can learn to employ with a greater amount of precision. A common language can not be parted from the prevailing culture of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. An informed educator must find a method of introducing it; the insightful student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of various scope and consistency. A corpus might contain anything from a book about literature to some true real life stories. I burnt many candles developing my "superb" Fiction Corpus to form a precise sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have dissected them, reformulating them - not merely to teach an American language but to promote the human soul, and to goad that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

As an artist, from the beginning of my adult career, my work had been devoted to the problem of body acceptance, a goal that I would later learn was shared by a whole community of people called naturists, a humble portion of which I discovered residing in Poland, a country whose cultural conservatism does not lend itself readily to forward thinking. One of those forward-thinking Polish naturists happened to be Margo.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Desert

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word desert in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word desert, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word desert is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Desert in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Oh, you are so confused. I love you, child. I carried you in my arms across the deserts of Mars. I love you so very much, but you don't know me! You don't remember me! How can you love me? Listen to your mother, my child. She is dead, but if you listen to her beautiful words - if you pay attention - you will come to know me, child. You will love me. Deep in my heart, I know you will trust me - just like your mother.

Verse 17 from the chapter called Invocation

In the morning, on the third day of the pilgrimage, there was mist. A ring of mist encircled us and prevented us from seeing farther than one kilometer in any given direction. The priests took advantage of this natural phenomenon to meditate on the presence of God, especially the way in which He accompanied Israel on her sojourn through the desert. Jesus meditated on his destiny, his true mother's identity, his oath to his father, and, above all, Zoe's role.

Verse 747 from the chapter called Security

The heavy arms were hidden, along with the money bags, and Jesus's men marched out. Those who were not deserters from the Polish Army stayed as Jesus's bodyguard in the Old Town. We were able to avoid the Army sweep, as surprisingly effective as it was, and, by the time most residents had returned to their homes, we had dispersed. Jesus returned to Treblinka. My cousin Stalin was stationed at a requisitioned magazine on Basement Road in the northeast corner of town. Elements of the 2nd Infantry were helping Reserve Army troops in their patrol mission; my cousin was in charge of feeding them.

Verse 9 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Expedience is not the real reason for this renunciation," I said. "It is the worm of pride and self-proclaimed desert which the State has stolen from the bowels of its Nation, with which it tyrannizes, and which will inevitably be swallowed by the office-workers and clerks, heads of state, and other well-intentioned representatives of national sovereignty who place invisible royal crowns upon their heads, who call themselves public servants, and who dream of reaching into the State Treasury and making gold. Unless, of course, the State and all its god-forsaken machinery is destroyed and buried into ground thrice-condemned to be forever abandoned by the Nation. I curse the State! The three-teated bitch with a rat's tail that bites the Nation's hand! May she forever burn in Hell! May the Krupniks whom she dutifully serves as their familiar themselves serve as her kindling! May they rot! May they be eaten by the starving worm which the Nation, if I have anything to do with it, will regain after countless millennia of well-deserved but long-standing deprivation in the name of progress, achievement and civilization. May civilization reach a new age! May I have something to do with it!"

Verse 323 from the chapter called Vows

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

ANDY: Yeah, I suppose - but it's not essential. I think I know enough general information. Besides, Mars will only be superficially similar to Iraq. I mean: they both have a lot of desert, right? And I'll be exploring other issues that have nothing to do with Iraq specifically: like technology and democracy, et cetera.

CHR: Don't forget the characters.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 10, Bringing Up a Sore Subject, Paragraphs 58-59

NIKE: I'll tell you where to go. In my opinion, the best place to get anal from a good woman - and for cheap - is at a swinger bar. Paris has great swinger bars. The thing is, you have to be lucky: sometimes you'll walk in; there's an orgy. Sometimes the place is deserted - or it's nothin' but guys. Or women in their fifties.

LUKA: How much does it cost?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 21, Anal Sex, Paragraphs 28-29

NIKE: Well, I can't guarantee we'll be able to make it. I'll probably have a list of things; customers can choose whatever combination they think appropriate, at their own risk, of course.

ANDY: Bubblegum mead?

NIKE: Let's not be ridiculous. I'm thinking more like: Guanabana-flavor Desert Mead. But that's going to be one of the staples.

ANDY: Will I be able to find that in stores?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 15, Dealing with Grand Schemes, Paragraphs 12-15

He knew why he wanted the woman: he wanted her because she was beautiful, indescribable: she was a desert swan or something. She was peculiar - like Nike: so he knew exactly what he would do if he saw her: he would lift her up in his arms and - no, he would smile at her and greet her; he would coax her, try to take her for himself. He would get close enough to her so that he could embrace her. He was going to join her in whatever position...was he going to seduce her? Was he going to pay her again? What was he going to do? He didn't know: and that's why he was terrified, even though he kept telling himself that he was only nervous.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 6

My knees began shaking, and before it was too obvious, I got up and realized how weak my legs were. Walking as steadily as I could to the kitchen, I found it mercifully deserted. After pacing for a brief moment, I decided to take a shot of liquor, but my whole body was shaking: my legs were shaking, my shoulders, my arms were shaking and my hands were shaking. I leaned against the counter and my hands were calm, then my arms were calm even though my shoulders continued to shake. I tried to stand upright, but my breast began to shudder, and my breath was shuddering too. And then my whole body shuddered - mercifully so, because after that I was relatively in control, and could only complain of a little trembling.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 9, Attacking homosexuality, Paragraph 2, Clauses 10-16

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
