Earth, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is contemplating the possibility of augmenting his insignificant Fiction Corpus with a coffee table book about photo art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the potential of enacting English as the international community's second language. I don't have faith in the spiritless methodology by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Upgrading one's dexterity with a language isn't like introducing a more accurate catapult. A language - a common language - isn't just a tool that you can learn to wield with greater amounts of precision. A shared tongue can't be disjoined from the professed knowledge of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A capable instructor must develop a technique for introducing it; the discerning pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language based on a specific corpus, a body of written language of various scope and consistency. Such a corpus can contain everything from a book about literature to some real bedtime stories. I lost many a night laboring on my "walloping" Fiction Corpus to form a different class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have ordered them, reformulating them - not simply to teach the English language but to defend the human spirit, and to prod that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Help Raise Self-Esteem With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I was American. Freshly arrived in Europe and the new owner of a '97 Ford Escort made in Germany. The only thing I had to complain about was the fact that the owner's manual was in German. She was from Poland, and a German-language owner's manual for a car bought in Poland wasn't the only thing she had to complain about. Something as small as that didn't even register.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Earth

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word earth in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word earth, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word earth is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Earth in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

There was a giant question mark between the Russians, on the one hand, and the Krupniks on the other. The relationship between Krupnik Holding S.A. and Russian oil was obvious. Though diversified, Krupnik Holding had decisive shares mostly in oil companies, most of whom refined and distributed mostly Russian oil. Those companies, unable to distribute their refined oil on Earth, were now hoping to distribute it to the new interplanetary shipping companies being formed. Those companies, in turn, were courting the spaceports, the orbitports, and, as far as they could, the stationports - arranging, as often as they could, exclusive contracts. Everyone, from the small oil company to the independent spaceport, was supporting Hitler Panzer-Tank's private war.

Verse 213 from the chapter called Security

All I see is spinning, my child: elements of red, green, blue - memories of Earth - Mars - misery. There is no peace in my mind. It spits out bile. FUCK THE EARTH it says. FUCK MARS! They are my voices. FUCK VOICES! They torment me: stop me from writing. But I must write. There is no time left. I thought maybe your grandfather might fail - maybe Julius might win. But he stays inside his volcano. He is at peace with himself. FUCK JULIUS! God bless Julius. He is a good man - a simple man. WITHOUT ZEUS, HE IS NOTHING: HE IS NOT KING. Fuck Zeus: the machine-god. Where is he? He abandons us. He is wanton. No: he is calculating. Zeus the Almighty. FUCK GOD. No! Do not curse God. God is great. God is good. Zeus is not God.

Verse 1 from the chapter called Invocation

It was generally acknowledged that, at some point, the restrictions would have to return. In the meantime, interplanetary trade in fossil fuels began to flourish once again; export was up and it seemed as if Earth's economy would naturally readjust and ever so gradually return to its former dependence on renewable sources of energy. That was wishful thinking. However, terrorists were unexpected - just like the corruption of interplanetary shipping companies was unexpected - just like the Martian Revolution was unexpected. Earth was faced with an unexpected situation: the countless wet scrubbers, electrostatic precipitators, and fabric-filter baghouses weren't cleaning the air as fast as we were polluting it, which, in other words, meant that the atmosphere, though deceptively improving in the lower regions of the troposphere, was only getting much, much worse in the crucial regions of the stratosphere. That was bad.

Verse 7 from the chapter called Security

"They can't be," I said, "not if Martians are leading terrorists on Earth."

Verse 994 from the chapter called Bohemia

Forgive me, child, when I say that I found her, at first, only somewhat attractive. Her forehead was huge; her chin, nonexistent. Only later did I fully realize how well the two complemented each other - it required a sophisticated taste, one which I did not yet possess - but, nevertheless, even the most sophisticated taste would have required some sort of refinement to accept her beauty for what it was: complex and unrepentant. Unearthly was the best word. She was half-Japanese and half-Martian, which made her broad and narrow at the same time. It gave her a short and straight and yet upturned nose that anywhere else would've been ugly, but which on her was essential to the whole. It was a package of such unexpected brilliance that the parts were too bold to allow for quick and easy appreciation of the angelic splendor that shone from within and without. She was light. She was truly an angel. Hers was the most serene and gentle complexion I would ever come to value, and, at first, it struck me as rather odd. It was square and round, flat and curved, with almond-shaped eyes whose lids folded around her eyeballs - they were beautiful eyes. I came to love them with all my heart. What a strange and complex face your mother had.

Verse 442 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Earth in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

ANDY: I have no idea. But I don't want to test myself. Besides, as long as the ground is underneath our feet, we still have a chance to escape.

OLYMP: Is the center of the Earth...

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 2, Discussing Heaven with a Child, Paragraphs 42-43

Was it not the True Cross of Christ? The road was the spike; the dashboard, the crossbeam. The light, His body. It seemed to reach the very center of the Earth: Hell? It was leading me. Whither did it will me go?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 19, Interpreting Religious Symbols, Paragraph 5

But I confess: it was very nice to see him. And Luke. And of course, Macy. It's amazing how some people, after so many years, can still make one's flesh jump. Even after one has lost all hope of...the impossible. But like I said, value is so arbitrary. Take wine, for example. I once thought that wine connoisseurs were gods. Possessed of some unearthly power, their discriminating taste born of years of good breeding at expensive restaurants, I thought their abilities beyond the reach of anybody who had not memorized a proper wine list by puberty, or had not spent their adolescence hopping through the French countryside or crawling through the caverns of Eger.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 1, Section 1, Introduction, Paragraph 1, Clauses 4-13

OLYMP: But this is the Earth; it's not heaven.

ANDY: Well, I don't see why it couldn't be.

OLYMP: But heaven is where God lives.

ANDY: Oh, alright: well, if that's what you mean: I don't think you'd like it. That place is very hot.

OLYMP: It's hot - really?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 2, Discussing Heaven with a Child, Paragraphs 11-15

I made a weak joke about how finding a good Colchester was simply impossible to do in Austria, thanks to the dearth of Austrian fishermen, but I was not satisfied with my results: Macy was intent on finishing his story. At a certain point, he scrunched his face closely together - he was imitating an oyster, I think - or maybe the act of eating one - I don't remember - but it was very funny and I laughed, simultaneously aware of the opportunity: so, while laughing, I kicked my cousin under the table - repeatedly, I must say - and she, finally getting my drift, began to laugh too; but only after the moment was over did she say, "Oh your face, Macy! Eet eez so funny," which embarrassed the poor man very quickly.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

It trained one of its nostrils on the man. It was enough to make Gog flutter like a pennant. Wads of snot blasted into him. It made him heavy. His arms strained under the weight. The dragon blew harder. Gog held on. With each snort, the man grew stiffer. The dragon stopped trying. It was out of breath.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a frank discussion of earth's cruelty

Tae watched. Bei struggled to climb the boulders. Her breasts jiggled like a giant donkey's balls. Tae realized it was too bad for her there wasn't less gravity here than on Earth. He suddenly imagined what might have happened if there had been more.

Bei disappeared over the opposite edge. Fu was left alone. Tae revealed himself. He watched the woman gasp. He slowly climbed down.

– from “How Tae & Bo Took Over the World and Kung & Fu Didn't,” an apocryphal bible story featuring a frank discussion of what to do on an alien planet

The woman's gastrocnemius bulged. With the humble soleus, it pulled her heel: oh splendid tuber! growth that takes the brunt of our standing, balancing our attempts at uprightness, seed from which blossoms man, which the serpent bites, protect yourself from harm; may we lift you as you walk: that you might crush the serpent. May all our heels be protected. May they not be spoiled by weight. May they glide across earth fearing no evil, no serpents, no stones to bash them. May they be as beautiful as that woman's heel, flying as it was across the road of my dream, casting small, delicate shadows.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring religious symbols

The earth had heaved below him. Gog concluded that earthquakes had knocked all the loose rocks off the ridge. Mithra returned with firewood. Gog told her to be careful. "I don't want to go climbing after you."

"Likewise," said Magog.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a frank discussion of what the world is all about

The earth refused to stay completely still. With great trepidation, Gog and Magog approached the foot of the mountain. As the sun began to set, Gog started a fire. His consort surveyed the day's progress.

"There's something funny about this ridge," she said. The ground was cracked like a dried-out river bed. She kicked at it. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't make it crumble.

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

(KOKOMO exits. GREY GOOSE enters.)

GREY GOOSE: My darling Polynesian beauty, Fletcher must be right. It's pointless for me to put the moves on you - especially since it's obvious you're in love with him. My chances of success were always slim. I never lost faith in a woman's whim. I was certain, if I tried hard enough, you would let me taste-test your sweeter stuff. Each one of my advances you rebuffed. You're too good. My situation has changed now that my dear wife and I are estranged. Perhaps some trickery can be arranged. If I were to slip softly into your bed, not smelling like chattel, but like that perfume you gave my son - that little brat - who cares more about annoying my wife than pursuing the love of his own life, even though I'm the one she causes strife - perchance I might convince you with a kiss - before you discover my artifice - that I am the best way to earthly bliss. It would give me joy. My desire to light this house on fire would be assuaged. Despite what I have said, I will never ignite another house again. I am reborn. Ever since your mistress unleashed her scorn, making me sit in filth, lost and forlorn, in my old cowshed, I have taken stock. I'll no longer blindly follow the flock. I cannot yet say the same for my cock. If my wife's got a lover, I'll be damned if I don't. I'm not going to be crammed away. I'll come back with my monogrammed pajamas. I'll drink champagne and cut loose like there's no tomorrow. I'll introduce Kokomo to my little one-eyed goose and she'll say I'm her daddy. My excitement notwithstanding, I must not invite suspicion. I'll save my strength for tonight!

Usage of Earth in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

"My children are young. They belong completely to the new millennium. You still have a chance to find something good in a world where it took a week to reach America, where we couldn't look for things from satellites or talk to people from the other side of the earth without sending somebody.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's fears depending on your outlook

"Heather Mills," said Orbitz. He kissed Sara Lee one last time. "You have to go," he said. He helped Sara Lee back into her skin suit. Before he put in her breathing apparatus he bowed his head and let her kiss him on the crown. It was a blessing. Orbitz watched the young woman sputter her way to the Nautilus. Of all the adventures they had ever had Orbitz loved these moments at Earth most of all. They had love and peace.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written with Stanislaw Lem in mind, if you know who that is

The Amazon assigned a top-notch surveillance unit to watch Orbitz's every move. They watched him clear out his flight deck locker. They watched him go to the gym one last time before turning in his passcard. They watched him share a smoke with the old-time janitor. They tweaked their earpieces as they listened to him tell stories about the janitor's great-great-grandfather who was shining floors and taking names the last time Orbitz was around. They fell asleep. The Amazon found out. He went crazy. He warned them that Orbitz was capable of anything. He had a thousand year head start. He was the richest man in the universe. He spoke hundreds of languages. He could have treasure buried on every planet in the Orion cluster if not the entire Orion arm of the galaxy. They were sleeping while Orbitz was on a transport to Earth.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Two years and still counting. No word from the devil. The bitch made promises. A fat check. Enough to pay for surgery. Where is she now? Two yards under. Seventy-two inches. I did the math. The scientist in the east wing told me that much soil would weigh about a ton. That's two thousand pounds. Way more than I can lift. I'm a big girl. The bitch that took my cigarettes was a tiny little thing. Even if she did come back from hell she'd never get out from under that earth. Unless they dig a hole next to her. I wish I knew where she was buried. I could do something about it.

– from “Two Years,” an adult fiction story about a guard who works at a women's prison

The surveillance team was lucky they weren't airlocked into oblivion. They caught up with the transport. They rocketed past its puny sails. When the passengers disembarked at one of Earth's orbiting elevators Orbitz was among them. The men breathed a sigh of relief. They decided to cling to their subject like spoiled lettuce. If Orbitz was aware of them he didn't show it. He went straight to a curiosity shop outside of Lubbock, Texas. The men waited in the street in a nondescript white autovan. They plugged in their earpieces. They heard the jingling of a bell. Footsteps.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is
