Gate, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is thinking about the viability of enhancing his imposing Fiction Corpus with a treatise on oversized canvas art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the prospect of promulgating English as a worldwide lingua franca. I don't trust in the unexceptional route by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Enhancing a person's intimacy with a language isn't like introducing a more secure lock. A language - a living tongue - isn't merely an instrument that you can learn to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A language can not be decoupled from the prevailing culture of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. A capable educator must develop a technique for introducing it; the discerning student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of written works of varying scope and consistency. They might contain everything from a book about literature to a bunch of fantasy fiction. I burned many candles developing my "stupendous" Fiction Corpus to form a unique sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have devised a million words and I have inspected them, reshaping them - not simply to teach the English language but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

By the end of my first week in Europe in 2011, I had bought a car and out of the blue had met the woman who would join me on a 6,000 mile trek across the European continent, sharing the beat-up car that I had bought and the one small tent from Walmart that I had brought along with me on my flight.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

I've never been married. I've never been divorced. I've never had kids. I've never lost my kids. That doesn't mean I can't try to understand somebody who has. By listening to Margo during our trip across Europe I started to consider her needs as if they were my own. I may not have been in a position to satisfy all of those needs, but I was able to shut up and put my own needs aside if I had to for at least 6,000 miles. We all need to be listened to and it is the one need that we all have a duty to satisfy. When somebody prays to another human, as a human you have a duty to listen. Humanity needs to start teaching itself that skill.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Gate

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word gate in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word gate, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word gate is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Gate in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Clouds brought fire to man. That cold breath of wet air that separates the positive away from the negative by lifting the positive up into the higher regions and leaving the rest alone, clumped together and shivering, decided to leave at the very bottom of the clouds a small blanketlike layer of the positive, which, for a while, protected Earth from the negative's wrath, but which was quickly devoured by that great mass and, giving way, permitted a fiery discharge of negative currents to come crashing down toward the Earth, summoning up, by methods I fail to understand, an opposing discharge from the point that otherwise would have been struck, which, as I've been told, met the fiery discharge approximately fifty meters above the ground and caused a great luminosity to flash and propagate itself back toward the clouds, reaching speeds near one-tenth the speed of light and temperatures around thirty-thousand Kelvin which heated the air and sent a massive shock wave expanding at supersonic speeds in either direction for about a meter before decaying into a sound wave, a massive clap, that rang in the ears of the first upright man to hear it, who saw the Light, who knew it to be God, or at least someone or something who was very angry - at him, perhaps, which made his whole hairy body stand on end and which scared the living bejesus out of him.

Verse 1 from the chapter called Security

My sister had been awakened by the buzzing sound of the intercom. Getting up out of bed, putting her tiny, little slippers on, she went to the front door. Without being tall enough to lift the receiver, she buzzed open the main gate. Putting on her nightgown, she stepped into the stairwell. She heard the gate slam shut. She was afraid. WHY HAD SHE OPENED THE DOOR? she must've thought. IT COULD'VE BEEN ANYONE. There were sounds of crashing. She was afraid, poor child!

Verse 376 from the chapter called Adolescence

When the conductor finally arrived, Dulles opened up his tailgate and pulled up his tarp. Inside, a small squad of soldiers had already snuggled themselves onto a foam cushion that was lying on the floor. I found a small place for myself and lay down.

Verse 170 from the chapter called Bohemia

They called him a traitor then! How they could've wondered if they had seen him those twenty or so years before, when, as a young tyro, scarcely out of his dead father's shadow - a meddlesome brat - a partisan who had never seen or heard or known the manual of arms, he started his great career as a leader of men, trusted, misunderstood, feared and derided, in precisely the same manner in which he ended it: that is, traitorously looping around a city under attack just so he could get his own: in the first case, it being a lot of money - whatever the Krupnik was getting for his trouble - but, in the second case, it being your beautiful mother, who, having searched far and wide across the plains of Mars for something (Jesus had no idea for what), had retired to her private apartments in the western half of Centropolis, the recaptured and secure part, which Jesus, at that point, was determined to penetrate - by himself. He didn't give a damn about Julius, the Resistance, even his own men, having relegated his first lieutenant, Stalin, to leading their retreat, along with the entire exodus of men, women and children, out from the Hellas Basin, away from your grandfather's tyranny, and north to the region of Alba Patera, while your selfish father planned his conjugal escape to the south. The only difference between that time and the first time was that, during the second time, God was still on his mind.

Verse 128 from the chapter called Arms

"Ah-ha," said Zoe.

"It's even got a gatehouse."

"How wonderful! I noticed."

Verses 584-586 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Gate in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Like streams of consciousness converging, former thoughts and current questions began flooding my mind. My heart was in danger. I took a deep breath and I held it in my chest, as if to reinforce the floodgates cradling my heart. I had to protect her from being overwhelmed by my sick and moiling stomach, or the storm clouds of my mind. I began a deep and steady breathing, calmly pumping away the feeling with my diaphragm, blowing out my nose, trying to dissipate my thoughts. But my thoughts - even without the weight of feeling welling up against me, pressuring my soul, churning my stomach - these thoughts were not dissolvable. They would not go away, and how could I let them infuse my heart? that fountain of dangerous feeling? that chemical dynamo that would send them shooting to my throat - give them voice! - no! that would send them bursting through my mouth in sentences of self-destructing rancor - an explosive solution, one which I would not allow to break my stony face.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 14, Feelings, Paragraph 2

I amused my company with a story about how I first came to London, and how I took the Underground to Leicester Square, and then proceeded to walk toward Shakespeare's Globe for a performance. "According to the Underground map," I said, "it was only a hop, skip, and a jump across the footbridge. But, after crossing the River, there were absolutely no signs for the Globe. And, with half an hour to go, the South Bank kept stretching in front of me, until finally I had to run for it. That was the first and last time I used a Tube map to navigate. It took an Olympian effort to make that show, especially since I didn't even have tickets. Luckily, they were able to squeeze in another groundling; but after hauling myself across that bank, no matter how good they were I could hardly stand the performance."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 11, The Underground, Paragraph 7

But my knees - for all their nervous power - they were only capstones on a hollow gate: as the feeling spilled over the wall and began trickling down the channels of my legs, prickling my nerves one by one, they proved themselves feeble barriers, and around my heart I began preparing my defense, for I knew that if that feeling were to reach my heart, I would not be able to control myself. Like the ancient Tyburn, coming down the heath, my feeling gathered force and began flooding the muddy tidal flats of my bowel.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 14, Feelings, Paragraph 1, Clauses 9-11

Like the angels who must congregate on those high and ghostly triforia - those seemingly impenetrable heights - I too felt myself leaning out from one of those three openings, looking down onto the nave below. It was Nike standing there - and, except for his friend Rothko, the place must have been empty. There was no one else around. I saw no one. And yet, the two of them were conversing in hushed tones. They must have been cowed by the grandeur. I came down softly and slowly, floatingly, until, finally, I could hear their voices.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 4, The Importance of Having a Dream House, Paragraph 3

One of its branches joined the main river above Whitehall, and a lower branch below the Houses of Parliament, thus creating the island of Westminster. Now back in the day, the Tyburn supplied London with drinking water, which was transported to the city by means of a most romantically natural system: a series of conduits made of elm trees. Now apparently, the English elm, if not as stately as our native American, is at least as durable under water - however, I did notice a very small but definite split in the bottom of our sculling boat; you shall have to investigate upon your return. But while you are in London, consider the fate of the Tyburn: it has disappeared; but: it still exists.
