Office, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is deliberating on the soundness of beefing up his resplendent Fiction Corpus with a story about a fiction writer; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the soundness of promulgating English as a worldwide standard. I do reject the altogether ordinary approach by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Perfecting one's mastery of a language isn't like making a safer match. A language - a common tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A spoken language can't be torn from the prevailing culture of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A capable educator has to have a blueprint for introducing it; the discerning pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written works of varying size and consistency. A corpus might contain anything from a book about literature to a whole collection of book reviews. I lost many a sleepless night creating my "tremendous" Fiction Corpus to form a distinct sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have shaped a million words and I have categorized them, reframing them - not simply to teach English vocabulary but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Help End Intimidation With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On Monday, I arrived in Europe. By Wednesday I had bought a car. By Friday I had met the woman who a few months later would end up having travelling 6,000 miles across Europe with me.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Office

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word office in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word office, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word office is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Office in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Jesus went to the passport office to whose jurisdiction his mother's hometown belonged.

Verse 230 from the chapter called Vows

"Go to the Office of Civilian Status. Maybe you'll find it there."

Verse 285 from the chapter called Vows

"These pictures were taken this morning," he said, handing him the photographs. "They show Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third in Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's office on the fourth floor of the Rathaus Club making a payoff. We estimate, from the size of the suitcase - as seen in this photograph - and this one - and from the height of the money inside and what we can only assume is the prevailing bill denomination - as seen in this photograph - use the magnifying glass - that the sum in question approaches twenty-four million dollars."

Verse 833 from the chapter called Security

"What's that?"

"That's the Town Office."

"And that?"

"That's the Western Bank."

They crossed the road.

"What church is this?"

Verses 345-350 from the chapter called Security

So it was that the Brigade had two languages. The officers and most of the men spoke Polish, but, because there were many for whom Polish now had to be taken on as a second or even a third language (and never quite successfully), English was always prevalent, especially considering that your own father was bilingual. The official language of the Autonomous Martian-bound Outer-space Cooperative was English. So too was English the official language of the LARC Presidium and Secretariat - a necessary result of American power and influence. One of Panzer-Tank's top generals was a former U.S. Army colonel for God's sake. Jesus knew his way around. He knew that he would have a good chance of influencing the work of the Presidium. Thanks to the UN charter granted both to AMOC and to LARC, Jesus's seat in the LARC war council was guaranteed, and the Church lobbied for even more.

Usage of Office in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I had another dream last night, by the way. I suppose I've got plenty of time to describe it to you. It begins in the hospital, in a room not unlike the one in which I find myself. But, of course, in the dream, it seemed much more spacious. It was crowded with people, most of which I didn't recognize. Except for Rothko, they were all doctors and police officers. They were all very interested in seeing the patient: to see whether his condition was really improved - that is to say, whether all his members were functioning appropriately.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 8, Being a Victim, Paragraph 1

In fact, when Nike began prowling around the Bois de Boulogne that night, walking up and down the Allée de la La Reine Margo, he noticed more than one pair of gendarmes watching him from across the street, leaning against their patrol cars, arms crossed and almost uncontrollably chuckling. Nike had to give them the old 'up yours:' the one involving both arms - but, Nike was so furious, he leaned into his gesture, and his arm came up so forcefully that he accidentally punched himself in the head, which provoked, in that particular set of gendarmes who were privy to it, the most outrageous laughter ever to be witnessed in officers who otherwise were representing the only semblance of law to be seen (or cherished) in that most dark and seedy of places.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 10, Navigating the Socio-Political Spectrum, Paragraph 4

MÉL: I don't know, but I could smell her. She was very tall, and when I was sitting by my desk, my face was right against her hips. I could tell she was wet.

NIKE: What did you do about it?

MÉL: I couldn't do anything. There was no way for us to be alone - until the next year, when she became the counselor. She had her own office during the school day.

NIKE: So what did you do?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 12, Economic Justice, Paragraphs 40-43

Nike was shocked. He was appalled. Police officers, despite being the worst kind of swine, should hold themselves with at least a little bit of respect, especially when they're idly standing along the Queensway of all vices. Nike was so ashamed he sat down near the bushes. Things were not going well. No one wanted to answer his questions unless he were going to negotiate business. Nike was not that foolhardy - at least, not yet: the pain was too much. But, because of it, he had to walk around like a grown man with rickets. Even the fat girls were laughing at him. Even the ugly girls, the cut girls, the destroyed and overly diseased girls were laughing at him. He was humiliated.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 10, Navigating the Socio-Political Spectrum, Paragraph 5

MÉL: I would always get in trouble. I would go to sister's office and she would spank me.

NIKE: Did you kiss her?

MÉL: Not the first couple times, but then we got brave.

NIKE: What did you do?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 12, Economic Justice, Paragraphs 44-47

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

The woman in the waiting room sat watching the secretary put files away. She couldn't help it. For an office worker on the moon, the secretary was extravagantly dressed. Sheer black stockings hugged her legs. A short, tan skirt stretched from one cheek to the other. Thin, white crape billowed over her shoulders like tissue paper.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring the dark side of the moon

Her apartment was ransacked. Everything was on the floor: her clothes, her notepads, her electronic newspapers-even her toys. Tatum gasped. The PDA was gone. She stormed back to the stadium. Barging into the administrative office, she told the frightened, bewildered Manga People that if any of them were responsible for burglarizing her apartment, she would go ape-shit . She was going to call the bailiffs.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story about what it means to keep people separate

Junior decided to rummage through the office after hours. There being nobody to ask for directions, it took him a while to find the elevator. He got lost on the second floor. Stumbling eventually into the minerals department, he searched the vicinity for photographs. He kept seeing the same African beauty. "This must be her," he thought to himself. "She's quite a fox."

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring one man's vices

"The roof," cried the officer. Shephard fired as close as he could to the man. Pepsi got up off the ground. She was in pain. Her leg hurt. She limped towards the gates. Shephard fired again. He watched Pepsi disappear into the other yard. He fired one last time. He crawled backwards. He jumped to the ground. He ran around to the ruins. In a low growl, he said "Ey-hey, an-may. Air-way are oo-yay?" There was no answer. He said a bit louder, "I ed-say, air-way are oo-yay?" Nothing. He shouted, "Ey, Orge-gay. Say something."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring Western technology

When the embassy hosted functions for locals, the mayor would complain his beshbarmak had too much coriander. The Foreign Minister preferred shashlyki without eggplant. The woman from the US-AID office would insist that all foods containing horsemeat be kept on a separate table. "I don't care if it's in their culture," she explained. "If there's going to be a boiled sheep's head, I don't want to see it."

ALICE: For Luke?

GREY GOOSE: From his team's manager.

Usage of Office in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The orbits of Captain Orbitz as told and retold by trillions of Orion systemizens, indeed systemizens from across many a galaxy, never fluctuated from their purpose of helping Captain Tycho "Tych" Orbitz conquer his home galaxy. Tych was firm from the day he resigned his commision as a courier in the Star Alliance to the day he vanished into space. Many were afraid he would come back. Many more hoped he would. They thought he was out pirating somewhere with Lalunia, his pheromonically irresistible great-great-great-great-niece, or ruling a planet with the beautifully blue Sara Lee, or fighting the jilted queen of the Astrazeneca or playing chess with CAROline the computer that loved him. They didn't know he was dead. They had no idea he had died long before he had even resigned his commission. Before he hijacked the tesseract marking the beginning of his rebellion or piloted the stolen ship Nautilus into the singularity the man had physically removed his own dead body from the bridge. He had no choice. At the time the ship was scheduled to be inspected by Star Alliance sanitation officers.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance in the spirit of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

"Stay here," said Proctor. "I'm going back to see John." When Proctor got to John's building, there was a squad car outside. An officer behind the wheel. Upstairs his partner stood outside John's door.

"Just you?" asked Proctor. The officer nodded. "Okay. Have a smoke."

"Thanks, boss." The man walked off. Proctor knocked on the door. When John opened it, Proctor busted it wide. He threw John against the wall.

"Who else knows, you cocksucker?"

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring an artist put in a weird position

I drove all the way to the beach to find relief. It took hours to get there. I stumbled into the woman's bar by accident. I knew it was around. I heard girls talking about it. I never thought I'd go. I assumed it was a waste of time. I was right. I didn't hook up with anybody. I tried to make conversation a few times. It didn't work. On my way home I got lost. I was so angry. When I saw the sign for the camping ground I had no idea it was for queers. I stopped to ask for directions.

– from “Two Years,” an adult fiction story about a correctional officer at a women's prison

In the end the professor's wife settled her wrongful death suit out of court. She moved out of East Farmville and the busted mailbox she had propped up in memory of her dead husband became another spider hole. Another clogged paper cemetery which Mark and the other substitutes kept cramming junk mail into because they didn't want to bring it back to the office. Life moved on. Somebody bought the house. They put up a new box. Fresh mail started coming in. Judging by the amount of Free Matter for the Blind, Mark hoped he wouldn't be seeing any more amateur photographers anytime soon.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story to teach children about adult stuff that may or may not work

Proctor took Simmons with him to John Gamble's apartment. Gamble opened the door. He was a pale willowy blond man with thin glasses. He seemed shocked to see them. "What's going on, officers," he asked. "I mean, detectives." His voice was trembling. "Is this about the serial killer?"
