Party, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is ruminating on the practicality of expanding his humongous Fiction Corpus with a book about writing stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the concept of enacting English as a worldwide language. I do reject the tepid program by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Reenforcing a person's skillfulness with a language isn't like developing a warmer piece of cloth. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue cannot be disunited from the shared logic of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a man to recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A capable educator must develop a technique for introducing it; the prudent pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of written works of varying size and consistency. They might contain everything from a book about literature to some real kid stories. I labored on my "formidable" Fiction Corpus to form a peculiar sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have enumerated them, reframing them - not merely to teach a language but to describe the human soul, and to propel that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On the second to last weekend of June, 2011, I had joined my fellow naturists at a gathering of the Naturist Society in rural Pennsylvania. The next day I left on a flight for Europe. By the end of the week I had unexpectedly met another naturist, a woman, who was destined to accompany me on a tour of Europe's great naturist resorts.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

I was American. Freshly arrived in Europe and the new owner of a '97 Ford Escort made in Germany. The only thing I had to complain about was the fact that the owner's manual was in German. She was from Poland, and a German-language owner's manual for a car bought in Poland wasn't the only thing she had to complain about. Something as small as that didn't even register.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Party

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word party in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word party, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word party is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Party in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Your father dressed his top lieutenants in the national colors of Poland that day - not for any personal reasons but because the wardrobe was being provided by a right-wing Polish political party, which, having lost most of its parliamentary seats in that year's parliamentary elections, was, nevertheless, courting your father's support for its presidential candidate. Your father was saving as much money as possible for his Independent (Lower Silesian) Riflemen's Armored Brigade and its upcoming deployment to Mars, and, not having made any specific promises to the League of Polish Nuclear Families, was more than willing to allow them to outfit his men. After all, the wedding was taking place in Poland, in a Polish Church (the Sanctuary of Lichen), your mother was being married to a Pole - however disgraceful and corrupt a Pole - and therefore, there was no reason why your father, a very, very proud Pole himself, shouldn't have been wearing the old royal colors of red and white. In fact, your father took the liberty of reducing everyone's chest measurements by a small but significant margin, making sure that every single member of his party, after having trouble putting on his jacket, had appropriate posture.

Verse 13 from the chapter called Childhood

When it was discovered that Leonard Cohen-Krupnik had met with a former Russian spy somewhere in Vienna, speculation ran wild. When it was revealed that Leonard Cohen-Krupnik, during his conversations with the Russian spy, had called upon his association with 'the first,' the prevailing theory was that Leonard Cohen-Krupnik, in conjunction with the President of Poland and perhaps the Prime Minister and his cronies (all of whom belonged to the same corrupt leftist party), had conspired to sell to the Russians not only a refinery in Danzig, but the controlling interest in Poland's largest petroleum dealer, which, at that point, was still possessed by the Polish state.

Verse 13 from the chapter called Security

Jesus hoped that Stalin's position in the army and, more importantly, his famous association with the Confederation would convince the board of directors to let him do whatever he wanted. After all, the future of the ruling party was at stake. If knowledge of this bribery and arms smuggling were - God forbid - ever to become public, the party would die. Their hopes of slowly rebuilding trust with this new Prime Minister's 'government of experts' by the time the next parliamentary elections took place would be quashed.

Verse 132 from the chapter called Security

The Marshall of Parliament waited five long years (and became Marshall of Parliament) before he was judged a liar for the second time (this time, on appeal). He appealed once again and initially resisted calls for his resignation, but even his own party, to whose leadership he had just been elected three days earlier, was unwilling to support him. They had entered government a few years before with fifty percent approval ratings in national polls and were now down to five. They were suffering not only from the whole Russian spy-chairman of the board debacle, but also from a film producer's corrupt solicitation of potentially very beneficial legislation to a large media firm allegedly in the name of the Prime Minister and his cronies, and also from a case where two Parliamentary deputies revealed state secrets by warning their friends in local government of impending arrest, and also from a case where the husband of one of the Prime Minister's cronies was arrested for taking money in exchange for arranging the privatization of a public power plant and then using that money to finance his wife's political campaign. In that particular case, the woman's sister-in-law and niece were simultaneously arrested for conspiracy and immediately confessed to their own guilt. It was very refreshing.

Verse 19 from the chapter called Security

The situation was bad: terrorism, corruption, Russian oil, Martian agents, alcoholism, domestic violence, hooliganism, the atmosphere, now coal trafficking - not to mention the old standards of poverty, homelessness, and disease. If municipal policemen had their hands full attempting to deal with the new plight of the homeless (extinguishing their fires, taking them to shelters, and then, the next day, extinguishing their fires again), it wasn't surprising that the national government felt like it needed help. That help came with SECURITA. Their new contract allowed them to buy any weapon, any armor, any surveillance device, any vehicle they could afford and which they felt they needed. Their contract also allowed them to obtain warrants. They were the new eyes, ears, and hands of the national government and they were private. What had been the largest private security firm in Poland was now a private paramilitary organization - all in the name of fighting the Polish national government's fight against the illegal traffic in coal and what the ruling party called 'the new corruption.'

Usage of Party in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

It had nothing to do with the bottle. Even as those thoughts curled within me, enveloping me, goadingly steeling me in the gathering steam, I knew the real reason for my decision: it was Macy. He would be there at Nike's house; I would have to see him, greet him after all this time, and, fearing the encounter, I knew that I would rather meet him in the context of a party - not the prepared emptiness, the disquieting silence that surrounds a house before its guests are welcomed.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 2, Letting It Steam, Paragraph 4, Clauses 1-3

Now Nike happened to be serving plantains at the party, and I soon realized I had provided him an excellent opportunity of fleshing out the difference. I recalled having asked him to explain this difference once before, and in the wrong company too, by which I mean I had to sit through a prolonged and tiring discussion on whether plantains were a subspecies of the common banana or vice versa.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 8, Partying with Intellectuals, Paragraph 5, Clauses 1-2

I thought about the impending party. Naturally, I wondered why I hadn't just gone straight to Nike's house, which, of course, would've been the natural maneuver.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 2, Letting It Steam, Paragraph 2, Clauses 4-6

I had no idea that my relationship had affected him. It did not last very long: a few weeks; I suspect that in the end he was more affected by it than me. But I rarely ever saw him in those days. I left for Europe soon afterwards, allowing new encounters to remove my mind. I did not think about Macy at all, or at least, very rarely.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 6, Third Party Intervention, Paragraph 3, Clauses 1-5

When, after about half a year, I came back to America, I was rather pleased to see him again. I soon discovered, however, that in my former position of intimate friend he had replaced me with a certain man, who shall remain nameless, but who did share his interest in theatre.

Usage of Party in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Steve O was sent home from the party. Alone. Drunk. He got lost. He ended up having to hop a fence and consequently tore his pants. This added injury to the insult. So Steve O went back to the party to complain. He was sent home again. This time under escort. This was the birth of Steve O's reputation.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that doesn't try to accomplish much, but what you make of it is up to you

Steve O auditioned for a show on his first day of class. He got the part of a dad. A pretty blonde got the part of the mom. Steve O was suddenly living the dream. He went head over heels. At a party, he got down on one knee just to propose a dance. Everything was going well. Until the girl's upperclass boyfriend intervened.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that isn't trying to win an award, but what you make of it is up to you

She wrapped her arms around my shoulders. Our foreheads touched. I put my hands on her bare knees. I rubbed her thighs. With each stroke, I circled wider. I went a little slower. I ventured deeper up her leg. I wondered when she would stop me. She didn't. My fingers brushed the edge of her panties. I drew back. I left my hands around her knees.

Indiana lifted her head. I looked up. She was staring into my eyes. She pecked me quickly on the lips. I had no time to pucker. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I've ruined your party."

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might calm one's nerves depending on your outlook

I know how you must have felt. I saw how disengaged you were the rest of the evening. I would have handled it much worse. I would have locked myself up in the bathroom. I know that. It happened to me.

It was on St. Andrew's Eve. We were celebrating your name-day. Our parents were overseas. We were in New York. We were having a party.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may help overcome one's sense of unease depending on your outlook

I told her not to worry.

"I'm such a nuisance," she said. "This was supposed to be a party."

"It's not important."

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
