Room, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's contemplating the feasibility of augmenting his majestic Fiction Corpus with more novels; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the potency of harnessing English as a global standard. I do doubt the sterile form in which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Fine-tuning a person's mastery of a language isn't like pioneering a stronger wheelbarrow. A language - a living language - is not merely a tool that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A language cannot be torn from the competing values of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A proper educator has to develop a plan for introducing it; the insightful pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of written language of various scope and consistency. This corpus might include anything from a book about literature to a lot of fiction books. I watched many nights pass creating my "petty" Fiction Corpus in order to form a unique sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have devised a million words and I have categorized them, reshaping them - not just to teach American vocabulary but to reveal the human soul, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On the second to last weekend of June, 2011, I had joined my fellow naturists at a gathering of the Naturist Society in rural Pennsylvania. The next day I left on a flight for Europe. By the end of the week I had unexpectedly met another naturist, a woman, who was destined to accompany me on a tour of Europe's great naturist resorts.

I had come to Europe to experience European naturism, a movement whose philosophy matched my aesthetic of body acceptance and whose organizational structure and leadership I had thought almost exclusively restricted to the western half of the continent. I was shocked to learn that naturism had an official home in Poland, a country not especially known for its liberal culture. I was less shocked to discover that the home was owned by a Dutchman, but even more shocked to learn that it had been largely built by Margo.

Though I was born in Europe, I had been brought up from a young age in America, living in states as diverse as Nebraska, Ohio and Connecticut. I was taught American values and saw reality from an American perspective. She was born and raised in a village in Poland. She went to work in the nearest town. The nearest city seemed like the center of the world. The American perspective was not something she was ever planning to see.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Room

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word room in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word room, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word room is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Room in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Sitting on the back step, holding a pistol in his hands, Jesus had no idea whom to expect. Which side? Anything was possible. The terrorists were, no doubt, in need of resupply, but who would represent them? Who could've made all the arrangements? And if these weapons were destined for honest men, what were they doing here in his uncle's backroom? The Silesian Air Squadron didn't need them. The 2nd Infantry was broke; they needed weapons, but who was going to pay for them? Perhaps this was a way of getting them cheap. "Who knows?" said Jesus. "Perhaps they received a budget increase."

Verse 16 from the chapter called Arms

Jesus went across the hall to his father's room, found a bag of powdered heroin, took some fresh needles and came back.

Verse 550 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Now," he told me once, when he came to visit me on leave, "I'm lucky if they let me fall asleep before dawn. They make us hold stools all night long, when we're running, when we're doing calisthenics, when we go to the bathroom - then, after about five hours of holding stools, we stand in a row and hold them out in front of us. We have to hold them by gripping the bottom of one leg. Then they come with bottles of water, not to let us drink - God forbid they should let us drink. They put the bottles onto our stools - if we spill them, they kick us in the gut. Then, we get to kick them back - if we don't, they kick us again. It's very weird."

"Very sadistic," I said.

Verses 20-21 from the chapter called Arms

Your father did crazy things there. He put needles into his body. Climbing on top of a shelf, he put needles into his body - in the coatroom. Some of the kids would look; others would run away.

Verse 97 from the chapter called Childhood

Usage of Room in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

The problem was that by now the twitching had moved from my eyes, by way of my knees, to the rest of my body, until my entire person seemed to be shaking hysterically, and all that Macy could do was try and soothe me from the opposite side of the room, since he didn't dare approach. Furthermore, every time I succeeded in calming my body, the shock I was feeling would outflank me, and out of nowhere I'd be overwhelmed with tears. As soon as these abated, once more, I'd find myself shaking hysterically. It was very frustrating.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 7, Trying to Kiss, Paragraph 9

When I was returning to Luke's room, which occupied the corner of the building, I faintly heard a tenor voice approaching steadily from around the corner. As the voice came nearer, I convinced myself that it was Luke's gait that I could hear from the swishing of the trouser legs, and that, in fact, it was Luke's voice that was now a few feet away.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 3, Ambushing a Man, Paragraph 2, Clauses 1-2

I caught Luke at the corner of the street, he wearing his red anorak and bowler hat; so silly: the rain was collecting in the rim, dumping on his shoulders at every twist of the head; he looked like a leaking fire hydrant. But he hardly recognized me staring out of the cab. After I finally ventured out into the rain, I yelled at him: "You have a hood on that thing, why don't you use it?" But he said it wasn't big enough for the hat. I didn't ask for an explanation. And since Luke quickly took notice of my hair, I wasted no time asking him if I could shower at his place. When you're alone with Luke, it's best to be brief. As it turned out, he was on his way to a meeting. He wasn't planning on going back to his dormitory until right before Nike's party. I mentioned how fortuitous our meeting was, and he, being very conscious of fate, was obliged to change his plans. Giving up his key, Luke said that he would meet me in his room, and that he would be, at the very most, an hour.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

The instruction first took place in the open air of the loggia. Citing the noise of the courtyard, Carmina had it moved to her chamber. Ferrari knew if music did not echo through the walls for even the slightest moment, somebody would investigate. The Baron's room lay through but one set of doors.

As for the rose window, removing the panes would require patience. It was not available in case of emergency.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story about a man with a bull's pair

Tatum shook her head. "I'll stay here for a while."

"Are you sure? There is a risk to your health with no weight room."

"There's an ergometer on the tenth floor. There's a kitchen and supplies. I'll be fine."

"You will forgive me for repeating my question. Are the woman and the child safe?"

"A friend of mine drove them to Pf Chang."

"Mr. Channing?"

"That's right."

"You'll be wanting to keep that gun?"

"If you don't mind."

"I do. It's material evidence."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a mysterious force

The car stopped in front of a modest module. It didn't seem like the actual police station. Tatum wondered if it were some kind of annex. The rooms were small. The man seated Tatum at a desk in one of the offices. An unusually large Manga person entered.

It said, "Shleeplaptip-bzz-kk-sh-kk." The slurping sounds were supposed to be words.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story set in space

The woman's heart skipped a beat. The secretary straightened herself. If she were being cruel, thought the woman, she would turn to see the ruddy, breathless reaction on her victim's face. She didn't. She went straight back to her desk. She sucked in her waist to squeeze past the edge. She kept her eyes low. She was making signals. She even bit her lower lip.

A door opened. It was on the far side of the long, narrow room. A man walked in. He was wearing the uniform of a bailiff. "Good morning, Pat," said the secretary.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a race of aliens without jawbones

The car stopped. Somebody got out. A gate opened. The vehicle rolled into what Shephard assumed was a courtyard. The door next to him opened. Somebody pulled him out. He was led unceremoniously up a few steps, and through a door, and into a room-there was commotion. Shephard was dropped onto a carpet. Somebody fell next to him.

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: I lost my virginity to a married woman. Her husband was abroad - had been for several months. She did plan on joining him, but she loved sex - she admitted it - more than she loved her husband. Then again, I didn't really know the man. Maybe he was the same way. Maybe he was a scoundrel. Some women are just crazy. I was doing work on her balcony at the time. She would undress in front of me through the window. She even let me watch her masturbate. I was around eighteen years old. She was forty. I had no idea what to do. I couldn't do anything, anyway. I was surrounded by my crewmates. When we finished, we packed up and we left. I didn't see her for several weeks. In due course, we bumped into each other at one of the local pubs. She asked me how I was doing. I told her I was fine. I bought her a few drinks. She asked me to take her home. I did. On her front porch, as she was removing her keys from her pocket, she dropped something.

ALICE: A condom.

FLETCHER: How did you know?

ALICE: I guessed.

FLETCHER: Is that something you've done?

ALICE: I've never done it. I assume, if you want to get your point across, that's the most powerful way.

FLETCHER: It's true. I couldn't help myself. I had to go up to her room.

ALICE: Did you like it?

FLETCHER: I loved it - as it was happening. When we were finished, I felt as dirty as a pig. She wanted me to come every Wednesday afternoon like clockwork.

ALICE: Did you?

– ACT I, lines 642-651

ALICE: (off) You gave them a three-thousand-dollar tip?

(FLETCHER exits with the music box. ALICE and LUKE enter carrying luggage.)

LUKE: What's wrong with that?

ALICE: Are you an idiot?

LUKE: I had a pretty nice stay.

ALICE: You said that in Bali after they bombed the restaurant.

LUKE: Honestly, fried rice never tasted better.

ALICE: And at that hotel where the hot plate was in the bathroom.

LUKE: I could make tea while I was on the john.

ALICE: And in Brisbane - where they didn't have a shower curtain and they didn't bring us one after I asked the maid about ten thousand times - I had to go and get one myself after I almost slipped and killed myself on the bathroom floor - what did you do then? You tipped that girl five hundred dollars.

– ACT II, line 551-559

(FLETCHER motions to KOKOMO.)

KOKOMO: I'll take care of it. Let me have them.

GREY GOOSE: What about the comforter?

FLETCHER: Just leave it alone.

GREY GOOSE: Aren't you going to take the sheets off?

FLETCHER: No.

KOKOMO: The sheets are clean.

GREY GOOSE: Doesn't this comforter go to another room? I thought it did.

MS. JACKSON: What are you up to?

GREY GOOSE: Nothing.

– ACT II, lines 373-381

(FLETCHER and MS. JACKSON exit.)

LESBIAN: Now my passions are roused! In this room lies my chance to consummate my love for her. How wonderful a thing is a parlor! Only a lecher seeks his victims in their own beds. Normal folk must wait for respectable opportunities to have their lusts filled. My landlady knows as well as I that, once the rest of the house has gone to sleep, having respected my privacy, I shall have reason to wake her - or she me - whichever the case may be, depending on who can resist temptation longer. With looks such as hers, I doubt I can.

– ACT II, lines 307-307

LUKE: You've got my wife in the nuddy.

ALICE: Not quite.

FLETCHER: You have arrived just in time.

LUKE: For a bloomin' orgy?

ALICE: Luke.

KOKOMO: There's a better place for this in my room.

ALICE: Are you sure you won't mind?

KOKOMO: Of course not. Come on.

FLETCHER: Don't retreat now. It was just getting fun.

KOKOMO: We're going to a better place.

– ACT I, lines 707-716

Usage of Room in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Proctor put back the letter. It didn't mention his name. He looked around. The wall was gleaming. He went to it. He touched it. Wet paint. He looked around. There were specks of red on the floor. Blood. There were more specks. Leading towards a door. Proctor pulled his gun. He went to the door. He opened it. A bathroom. Proctor turned on the light. A body in the tub. Floating in a pool of red. John's husband.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring an artist's model put in a weird position

I know how you must have felt. I saw how disengaged you were the rest of the evening. I would have handled it much worse. I would have locked myself up in the bathroom. I know that. It happened to me.

It was on St. Andrew's Eve. We were celebrating your name-day. Our parents were overseas. We were in New York. We were having a party.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may help overcome one's sense of unease depending on your outlook

I gave him the coldest stare I could muster. "Old Austrian custom," I whispered. I walked away. I washed my face and hands in the bathroom. I noticed the lay of my breasts. I wondered if Indiana would see. What would she think? I considered telling her what happened. It wouldn't be appropriate. I would have to fish my clothes out from behind the love seat.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may calm one's nerves depending on your outlook

It was too late. Guests were back in the room. I picked up the keys I dropped. My breasts were filling out my dress like curd in cheesecloth. I rushed towards my sweater. Nike sat on its edge. I had to pull it out from underneath him. We exchanged the evil eye. Nike smiled.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's nerves depending on your outlook

As a child Steve O was fed the dream of being a womanizer. His preteen idol was a teenage womanizer. His teenage idol was a college-age womanizer. By the time he got to college he had already made the transition to full-fledged letch. Strip them down to the socks was his motto. He practically moved in to the place where it happened. The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
