Michal's mulling over the feasibility of expanding his proud Fiction Corpus with a screenplay for a science fiction movie; cites fatigue

I think highly of the potential of administering English as a worldwide lingua franca. I don't accept the conventional routine with which the English language is presented for study.
Improving a person's knowledge of a language isn't like pioneering a sharper needle. A language isn't merely a tool that you can learn to wield with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue can't be pulled from the philosophical currents of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.
To make a pupil recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A proper teacher has to have a blueprint for introducing it; the insightful student goes out to seek it.
A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of writing of varying scope and consistency. Such a corpus might contain anything from a book about literature to some really commercial fiction. I watched many nights pass developing my "weighty" Fiction Corpus to form a different type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.
I have molded a million words and I have tabulated them, reshaping them - not simply to teach an American tongue but to defend the human spirit, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.
A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word shore in some kind of way.
If you want to communicate an idea using the word shore, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.
By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.
The more you know about where the word shore is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.
"Shore" does not make an appearance in The Gospel of Jesus
A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.
Now there is only so much I can do: I am trying to point you in the right direction. It is my belief that Indiana was infected many years ago, when you were still a child on the shores of Lake Ontario. You are not to blame; but you are no longer a child, and the first thing we must accept is that this sort of thing is indeed a verruca vulgaris: it is a common affliction, as pervasive in society as in the bodies of those infected. Nevertheless, each man must face his own feelings first, and alone; but when you do, remember: it is a thirsty saturation: these feelings; you will not satisfy yourself by slowly and meticulously draining them. You must drown them, and sincerely hope that they will eventually wash away.
– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 5, Warts, Paragraph 3
A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.
To the canine, the scent came undoubtedly from the shore, the sea breeze bringing not just the fragrance of flounder and bluefish with a touch of green crab mixed with striped bass, but, above and beyond this briny bouquet, the distinct nutty flavor of bright hot pants.
"I spooked him," thought the young lieutenant. Observing his suspect drop anchor and swim ashore, Patsy got nervous. "I better call this one in," he said to himself. Raising the Park Ranger Station on his radio, he asked for Ranger Juanita. "Hey, baby," he said. "Are you at area L?"
Gog continued the journey. He encountered a large salt lake [e.g. Lake Urmia]. The settlements along its eastern shores had recently felt Sargon's wrath. "They breed horses here," said the men. "There is good pasture. If we stay here, we can raid the plains and roam the hills at our leisure."
Tae waited for Kwon. When he arrived, he testified he had found the shore empty. "I checked the pit," he said. "I saw somebody there. I didn't think to make sure who it was. I know now it must have been Jutsu. I went to search the coast. When I came back, the pit was uncovered. Jutsu was on the bottom-dead. I assume he fell trying to get out. His head must have been split open by a rock."
Tae asked, "Are you sure he was alive when you first passed?"
Bo stared at the burning cloth. She was struck by how readily Tae had disposed of it, after she had risked her life to grab a little piece. Bo breathed deeply. She fingered the buttons of her shirt. She decided it was time to let go. Tae listened. The fire crackled.
They spent the next few days enjoying each other's company. They walked along the shore. They caught crabs. They played in the waves. For the first time, they made love.
A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.
"Shore" does not make an appearance in Sorry Miss Jackson.
A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.
An ocean drifts below. A distant shore brings towers of glass and steel. Workers perched atop unfinished spires beam proud industrious smiles. These are the spoils of victory. My comrade and I drift to the ground. We find nothing to celebrate.
Further west the air fills with dust. Further west another ocean fills with fire. As the smoke clears my comrade and I face yet another shore. This one teeming with life. We wait. There may be hope in these masses. We watch the battles rage. We watch the battles die down. We land in a barren field.
This table lists in descending order of frequency a selection of word pairs that appear in the Fiction Corpus and groups them according to the morphological derivation of the word shore that appears in the pair.

I have yet to perform a collocation analysis of "shore." I hope I can get it done sometime soon. -Michal
It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
