After, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal dismisses the concept of augmenting his gargantuan Fiction Corpus with a story about flash fiction submissions; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the prospect of harnessing English as a universal language. I don't accept the pleasureless process by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Upgrading a person's intimacy with a language isn't like launching a more sonorous flute. A language - a living language - is not merely a tool that you can learn to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A shared tongue can't be cleaved from the professed knowledge of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A proper educator must have a strategy for introducing it; the prudent student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written works of varying scope and consistency. A corpus might include anything from a book about literature to some real adult short stories. I watched many nights pass forging my "herculean" Fiction Corpus to form a new kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drafted a million words and I have codified them, reshaping them - not just to teach American vocabulary but to describe the human spirit, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

Being from America, all I had to do in Europe was turn on the radio to hear an American song. All I had to do was walk into a movie theater to see an American movie. To be understood all I had to do was speak English. Being from Poland, she couldn't stand listening to the radio for all the political nonsense being bandied about. She didn't like watching American movies because she claimed they all ended the same way. She didn't want to speak English with me because she not only wanted to say things correctly but she wanted to say them her way and nobody had ever succeeded in teaching her how. I desperately wanted to understand. She wanted to be understood.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word After

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word after in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word after, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word after is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

The next day, the fruit vendors told the police to fine your grandfather; he didn't have a license either, they said. So the police went to your grandfather and told him to leave. Your grandfather told them to go to hell. They fined him; he laughed. One of them, as it turned out, had married his second cousin's niece. After that, the policemen decided not to bother him.

Verse 71 from the chapter called Adolescence

"It was flooded." Sapper turned back. "Before the funeral, they opened it. There must've been about half a meter of water in there. Three meters down, I could see that the uppermost casket was crooked: the water had pushed it over. I don't know how old it was, but at least it wasn't turned over. They wanted to pump the water out, but there wasn't enough time. They decided to pour in concrete, but they said, 'Let's wait till after the funeral.' So: I don't know. Maybe they did it; maybe they're doing it right now. Or maybe they're going to do it. If that's the case, the crypt's going to be open."

"They put her in cold water?"

You, on the other hand: you were still fishing around for that ball, and only after our father and our uncle came through the house with Albert did you finally come walking up that hill. I remember the moment distinctly: our father was joking that Albert being Hungarian, and Indiana being Romanian, we had the better part of the old Austrian empire assembled before us. Indiana began elaborating the joke, and, as she neared a punch line, you appeared, wet and out of breath, just in time to watch everyone heartily laugh - everyone but me and Indiana, of course. You had no idea what the joke was, and, as if searching for an explanation, you had to look around quickly, ignoring me (of course), before transfixing your eyes on the source of everyone's merriment.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 1, Genital Pain as a Result of Physical Trauma, Paragraph 4

Because of her schedule, Christie likes to wake up bright and early in the afternoon. But, because I was her guest, the first morning of my stay I woke up to the smell of burning eggs. Christie had woken up early in the morning and had tried to make me breakfast, but had fallen asleep at the kitchen table. I quietly disposed of the smoldering remains before I woke her up and told her to go back to bed, which she promptly did: after we arranged to meet at Trafalgar Square in the afternoon. So I went down to Westminster by myself to visit the prominent buildings, and then made my way up Whitehall at the appropriate hour. Spying from across the street, looking past the rotating mob of cars, I spotted two familiar figures at the base of Nelson's Column; they were standing on top of the pedestal.

GREY GOOSE: I won't argue with that. I should come first anyway.

KOKOMO: One of these days, Grey Goose, you'll realize that you're a good person. Let's hope I don't kill you first.

GREY GOOSE: Let's go.

KOKOMO: I'm coming.

GREY GOOSE: Good. I assure you: it won't be the last time.

FLETCHER: I'm just teasing. She had a boyfriend.

ALICE: Don't go around sleeping with other people's partners.

FLETCHER: I didn't say I slept with her. I did sleep with her. We didn't root.

ALICE: I have to say, I never thought that after marriage I would ever feel attracted to a person with the exact same force I had always felt before. I see now that I was wrong.

FLETCHER: I do have a chance.

ALICE: I didn't say I was talking about you.

FLETCHER: Then whom? Grey Goose?

ALICE: Why not?

ALICE: How old were they?

FLETCHER: Seven.

MS. JACKSON: You're taking after your father.

FLETCHER: Father never worried about getting himself extorted. Everybody already seemed to know whom he was - what's the word?

ALICE: Rooting.

FLETCHER: Thank you, Alice. Rooting.

LUKE: We're gonna have you speakin' Strine before we leave.

FLETCHER: With wowsers like my mother, it won't be enough.

MS. JACKSON: What, may I ask, is a wowser?

LUKE: A spoilsport.

– ACT I, lines 127-136

LUKE: (to ALICE)

I'll explain later.

MS. JACKSON: How dare you invade this house? You idiot! What were you trying to do? Rape my cook? Don't tell me she was expecting you. You weren't expecting him, were you?

KOKOMO: No.

MS. JACKSON: You were trying to seduce her. My God! With a sudden invasion of the sofa bed? Not even an imbecile would consider that an effective strategy. You've lost your wits completely, haven't you? Pathetic. If you're so desperate for sex, why don't you try buying some attention?

GREY GOOSE: I admit that there have been a few times in the past couple years when I thought my vow of fidelity to you had long since expired. There may even have been a few times when I looked after a nice bit of flesh. Despite that, I've never been unfaithful to you, Ms. Jackson, no matter what you might think. As for this, I won't deny what I was after - and have been after for too long now - which is, namely, to sleep in my own bed, whether or not your cook or your lover or anyone else is in it at the time - and that, my dear, is a matter of your own construction.

MS. JACKSON: You deserved to be expelled. Do you think I enjoyed getting looks in town? Complimenting my dress, were they? You promised me you had never fooled around and that you never would. Now I know every single word they ever uttered about you is true. How could you? After all we've been through? I loved you.

FLETCHER: Come on.

GREY GOOSE: Wait. I've got some more to say. I confess I earned somewhat of a reputation in my day - for reasons mostly beyond my control, like my virility and my instinctual desire to perform well.

FLETCHER: Don't screw it up.

"Seven," countered Sir Lewis.

"Two," said Miss Day.

"Ten," said Sir Lewis.

It was agreed. Shortly afterwards Miss Day was chosen to proctor. Sir Lewis begged her not to wear a skirt. "Anything but a skirt," he said.

One day Orbitz finally emerged from his hotel room. He was carrying what looked like a book. He went into the shop. "It's you again," said the shopkeeper. "What do you want?" Orbitz said nothing. He dropped the book on the counter and left. One half of the surveillance team followed him all the way to the space port. The other half decided to find out what was going on. They raided the shop. They found nothing. The book Orbitz had been carrying was an antique. It was stamped with the name of the hotel. When one of the agents went to the hotel to ask about it the clerk behind the desk wanted it back. He said every room was supposed to have one. It was tradition. He had no idea why. He said the owner would get mad if one of them disappeared. The owner was questioned about the book. He said the same thing. It was tradition. Every room had a book. Every book was the same. He didn't know why. He didn't care to know. The Amazon cared. According to his sources there was a chance the book had a connection to the Wiki-en Society. He ordered the hotel closed. He arrested the owner and the entire staff. They proved themselves innocent quickly. The Astrazeneca found no deception in them. The shopkeeper was different. He was held long after the others had been released. He wasn't lying about Orbitz. He had never seen the man before in his life. He was lying about the way he did business. He claimed he was an honest businessman. It was a lie. He claimed he knew a good bargain when he saw one. Another lie. The Amazon wondered what was happening. Orbitz had gone from the space port to a low orbit cruise ship. Aboard the same ship was Sara Lee. The scientist who had confounded the Astrazeneca in the first place. He assigned a surveillance team to watch her. She walked around and gazed at the blue planet. She didn't see Orbitz at all.

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
