During, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's weighing the prospect of strengthening his resplendent Fiction Corpus with another fictional book; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the idea of using English as everybody's second language. I don't regard highly the prevailing routine with which English is taught.Pointer

Fortifying a person's skills with a language isn't like bringing about a sharper needle. A language - a spoken language - isn't just an instrument that you can learn to wield with greater amounts of precision. A language can not be unlinked from the philosophical currents of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A good teacher must develop a technique for introducing it; the discerning student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a particular corpus, a body of written language of various size and consistency. They can include anything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of romance fiction books. I suffered many a sleepless night forging my "jumbo-sized" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have separated them, reframing them - not simply to teach an American tongue but to promote the human spirit, and to prod that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

By the end of my first week in Europe in 2011, I had bought a car and out of the blue had met the woman who would join me on a 6,000 mile trek across the European continent, sharing the beat-up car that I had bought and the one small tent from Walmart that I had brought along with me on my flight.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

There were times during our trip when I thought there might not be a happy ending. There were times when disaster was close and I wondered whether I hadn't made a mistake. I wondered whether fear, anger or sadness might triumph and one of us would have to finished the journey alone. Though I dangled from the cliffs of Normady I was saved. Though the lights went out I rode on. Though I ran the tires down to the wire I was okay. We drove home in one piece. We came home happy. We had started the process of learning how to listen and the sound of it was beautiful. We could be sure that we were ready to conquer the devils that abuse us no matter how long it would take.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word During

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word during in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word during, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word during is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of During in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"The military's going to shell every suspected center of terrorist activity in the Old Town at dawn. The headquarters - the alleged terrorist headquarters - lie along the same arc, as measured from the artillery's location, as the bank. Therefore, at the range at which they'll be bombarding the headquarters - the alleged headquarters - a slight change in azimuth will send the bombs dropping, not over the terrorists, but right over the bank, demolishing any evidence that it was robbed during the night. When the military's observers verify that their bombs are going astray, they'll stop. They'll make the correction and then continue their fruitless efforts. Meanwhile, we make our deal, and everybody's happy."

"How do I walk away from this after it's over?"

Verses 245-246 from the chapter called Arms

Sure enough, the driver had made Sapper's acquaintance during a certain bus trip to Berlin. His name was Washington Dulles.

Verse 133 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Those," said Sapper, stopping to think, "are the sons of Counts who died young - mostly during Yellowstone - from lung disease."

Jesus nodded. "Like everybody else," he said.

Verses 244-245 from the chapter called Adolescence

Without license to buy more weapons, Jesus had to be very stingy. Not till he signed on with SECURITA did Jesus gain the privilege, thanks to that security firm's contract, of being able to buy whatever he wanted (which the firm even tried to subsidize, but Jesus, more often than not, paid from his own pocket, which prevented his so-called superiors from requisitioning his equipment). In fact, it was during his first few months of tenure with SECURITA that Jesus found Baron Cohen-Krupnik with bullets in his head. Through a fluke, he was the first one to arrive at the crime scene. The landlord who had rented Baron the apartment also happened to be an old friend of Stalin's. Jesus was able to take photographs, which he later used to convince your mother, Zoe Guderian, that her fiancé's family was not up to snuff, not that she ever thought they were (for various reasons), but, after seeing poor Baron with bulletholes in his head (someone she had once had the displeasure of socializing with), she was convinced, despite her better judgment, to continue her relationship with Sacha Cohen-Krupnik, just so she could spy for your father, which she did, with painstaking effort, going so far as to marry the bastard, which your father deeply regretted.

Verse 420 from the chapter called Arms

Our most important surveillance work was in Wroclaw's Town Square, close to the Rathaus, which Jesus had thoroughly searched during our defense of the Old Town. Finding out where the building archives were, Jesus had made copies of all the blueprints for properties owned by anyone named Krupnik. One property was particularly interesting. It turned out, the Rathaus Club, a dance club in the middle of Wroclaw's Town Square (close to the Town Hall, or, in German, Rathaus), not surprisingly, was indeed owned by Leonard Cohen-Krupnik. This was the dance club which Columbus had played the very same night he met my sister's killer. It was very exclusive. Both the basement and the ground floor had popular dance floors. They were large and spacious; the ceiling on the ground floor was high enough to accommodate a crystal ball two meters in diameter. The second floor was a private lounge for private guests only. The third and fourth floors had private rooms and offices. Leonard Cohen-Krupnik was often there when he was in Wroclaw. He did business in the center office on the fourth floor. His window looked over the alleyway that went through the buildings in the middle of Town Square. From one of those buildings, our cameras looked on.

Verse 229 from the chapter called Security

Usage of During in Sex for Children

Warfield, the future Duchess of Windsor in that adaptation of her memoirs. I'm sure you've heard absolutely nothing about it: the production was terrible and closed after a few weeks. Ms. Christie was not to blame, but since her future seemed to depend on the success of this production, and because it's so difficult for anyone to look good in a bad show, during my entire stay with her in Hampstead, she was in a constant state of fluster.

MÉL: I don't know, but I could smell her. She was very tall, and when I was sitting by my desk, my face was right against her hips. I could tell she was wet.

NIKE: What did you do about it?

MÉL: I couldn't do anything. There was no way for us to be alone - until the next year, when she became the counselor. She had her own office during the school day.

NIKE: So what did you do?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 12, Economic Justice, Paragraphs 40-43

And they said: no cheating. But I knew: because Albert was coming into Romania, the part where I live, to visit his family, and they were good friends of my family. They were very close to us. And he was always coming. But that time I knew that he wanted to take me back to Budapest with him. It was very funny: because also, on the day of Luca, we start making a chair from wood. Everybody is making this chair. And we have to keep making the chair and we cannot finish until the day before Christmas - almost like the apple. So when we finish, we put the chair inside the church. And if during the midnight mass, somebody steps on top of the chair, they are supposed to be able to see who is the witch. So Albert, he stepped on the chair, and he looked around, and everybody was looking at him, and then he looked at me, and he smiled, and he said: she is the witch, because she has bewitched me. And he asked me to marry him. Right there: standing on the chair. Everybody was waiting for me to say yes. And I purposely waited a long time. My mother: she whisper, he is crazy. And I said yes. I said really loud yes."

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 21, Giving and Receiving a Look, Paragraph 2, Clauses 7-25

In truth, when I looked carefully at the Romanian, when I studied his chunky face and stocky frame, and then, when I was reminded of the man who sold us opium, I began to wonder what kind of ancient Roman Luka would be. It was funny that he was also wearing sandals that day, and I had to imagine him walking around the villa, keeping bees outside of Rome in ancient Latium, during the days when pure sugar was a dream.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 7, Being Pessimistic, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-2

I remember it vividly, because Grandmother was very inspired; she began telling us more stories about maidens dreaming of marriage - like the rites of St. Catherine's Day, which was on the twenty-fifth of November and used to mark the beginning of Advent. Now in the olden days, the meats and sausages had to be hung right above the kitchen fire by the time St. Catherine's rolled around - otherwise they wouldn't be ready for winter - at which point, the family would say: "The girls have been hung in the chimney!" referring not only to the meats and sausages, but the many poor girls who would have to preserve themselves through the winter, since, according to our Grandmother, in the olden days, weddings were forbidden during Advent.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

The suspect was probably Taiwanese, the Beipu incident having occurred first. Though he was present in the United States during the summer, he was now believed to be in Japan. He nursed a penchant for watching women fall from tall buildings, especially large statues. Presumably, he employed a type of breakaway collar on his victims. The FBI was paying attention. Help came from every angle. Juanita, of all people, came up with an idea.

LUKE: I don't want to be the one spillin' secrets, but you might as well know. It all started when her grandmother was raped by the Japanese on Western Samoa.

LESBIAN: During the war?

LUKE: Whenever it was that they occupied the island.

LESBIAN: The Japanese never occupied Western Samoa. They did have plans to invade, but Midway changed all that. They tried to capture Port Moresby instead. Unfortunately for them, what they thought was a motor track turned out to be a mule trail, one which no Australian had dared traverse in over twenty years. They say the Japanese soldiers eventually turned to cannibalism. I thought about doing the hike myself. Five days is a bit much. The dry season was ending. I decided against it.

LUKE: Are you saying the Japanese never invaded Western Samoa?

LESBIAN: I was on Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. That was as far as they got. You must be confused.

LUKE: I'm not confused; I'm sheepish. It wouldn't be the first time.

"When are you Jewish?"

"Only on Sunday."

"More than I like it Russian."

"You're Hungarian."

"Because I don't like Russia?"

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might help overcome one's sense of discomfort depending on your outlook

Grandmother chuckled. "I remember when weddings were forbidden during Advent. Every St. Catherine's Day, when the meat and sausage were hanging above the fire, the men would say, 'The girls have been hung in the chimney - to dry.' This, of course, had a double meaning."

"St. Catherine's Day," I interrupted. "What does that have to do with anything?"

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's sense of anxiety depending on your outlook

"Not by itself," said Orbitz. "It has the maturity of a small child. It will always be like that. The princess was infected with a parasite during the pregnancy. It fused with her child's nervous system. From the belly up it looks like a little girl. Below it has the thorax, the legs, and the abdomen of a large spider. In the abdomen is a poison gland that can be removed surgically. Until then it must be cauterized daily. Its reproductive system cannot be removed. It produces parasites that infect pregnant humanoids. When it sees you onboard it will insist that you be infected." Sara Lee's chest heaved with apprehsion. Orbitz restrained her. "It will sense the child within you," he said. "If you go aboard the ship I am going to let it infect you, Sara Lee." Orbitz's voice almost broke. "I'm sorry for that," he said. "I've paid the price. I want you to know that our son will survive. He will be a beautiful baby boy. He will grow up to love his mother very much. I can't tell you how this is how going to happen. It would betray me to the creature. You have to trust me." Orbitz turned Sara Lee around to face him. "You don't have to go onboard the ship, beloved. You have a choice."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance inspired by Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

I swatted away my mother's hand. Like I would a bug. That's when she threw the remote control. It was the prelude to an all out attack. All of a sudden I was in middle school again. The wimpy Indian kid I had made fun of in music class had come to punch me in the face again. No pain. Just shock at the sheer audacity of it.

If my wife had been present during the incident she would've been on my side. Instead she's against me. All because of a four letter word. Rape.

– from “The Backed-Up Toilet,” a literature story based on true events as I lived them

I was taken to a football game. Not at a stadium. More like a field with a stand. My uncle called it "The Moldavian Wembley." This is where my stomach caught up with me. At some point during the first half I rushed out to find a toilet. The only permament structure I found had a long line sticking out of it. The portable toilets were crowded. I decided to find something further afield. At the very least a bush.
