Still, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's mulling over the notion of enlarging his gargantuan Fiction Corpus with a fable about downloadable calendars; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the possibility of administering English as the international community's second language. I do challenge the unimaginative steps through which the English language is taught.Pointer

Boosting a person's skills with a language isn't like pioneering a safer match. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to wield with a greater amount of precision. A shared language can't be disengaged from the shared logic of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A proper instructor has to develop a technique for introducing it; the bravest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of written works of varying scope and consistency. They can include anything from a book about album art to a set of really inspiring stories. I lost many a night developing my "gallant" Fiction Corpus to form a precise sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have devised a million words and I have anatomized them, reshaping them - not simply to teach the English tongue but to reveal the human soul, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Still

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word still in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word still, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word still is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Still in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"You're missing the point, Sapper. No one's going to be giving anyone any blowjobs. We're not having sex: we're staging it. Don't you understand?" said Jesus. "Someone's still going to have to get it in the ass."

"Not me."

Verses 101-102 from the chapter called Security

When they got to the crypt, all the doors were closed. Through the windows, Jesus saw his mother's monument: flambeaus were lit; bouquets were still fresh. 'Christ conquers death,' said the ribands. Jesus stopped crying: the stone slab was firmly in place - he was grateful, having dreaded the possibility of jumping into his mother's crypt and opening her coffin.

"Did you see her?" asked Jesus.

Verses 233-234 from the chapter called Adolescence

"How ingenious," said Zoe, "but still a stroke of luck."

Verse 302 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Still in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Oh, but who am I kidding? It's obvious that there are still so many feelings left - contradictory and unpredictable. And I'm supposed to be telling you what happened at Nike's party. That is the reason for my writing this letter. And I am aware, as my shuddering body reminds me, that in order for you to understand what happened, I must relate to you what has been happening, or rather what has not been happening between myself and Macy, a relationship which must seem entirely innocent to you, as I have ever so rarely discussed it. And I do apologize profusely for that, but there was never a moment when I was not so entirely confused that I could possibly broach the subject with any hope of clarity. Ah, but I'm already making excuses.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 1, Section 1, Introduction, Paragraph 3

You expect me to believe that you quietly said to Indiana, "I wish I had someone to caress me," and that you meant nothing by it? that it was totally innocent? Well don't expect me to believe it so easily. I'm still having trouble recalling which Christmas party it was, and until I do remember and I'm able to corroborate the circumstances of that moment, your defense is strictly provisional. But I must admit, if I am able to believe your testimony, it would help to exonerate you from the greater share of blame.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 4, Doubting a Man's Intentions, Paragraph 3

But once these things are grouped together, no criterion but taste is specific enough to distinguish between them; in this way, taste is subject to qualification. Do you see what I'm saying? You see, if one were judging an Olympic race, where time is measured by the millisecond, and we know that only one athlete will get the gold, one would still have to concede that each contestant is among the very best, and therefore equally capable of winning if circumstances permit. Unless of course, the race is run several times and there is always the same clear winner. But then that person belongs in a category of his own, sui generis, which, I suppose, might be construed to mean that he is the best, which also means that I am defeating my own argument.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 1, Section 1, Introduction, Paragraph 1, Clauses 25-29

If Nike were plagued with happiness - if he could not shake that feeling of joy, that irrepressible feeling of perfect communion - he would not understand why he must be so happy. He would still know why he's not unhappy - and if some strange fortune were smiling on him, he would know exactly why he be happy at that particular moment in time - that's precisely why he's so comfortable, because he knows what sorts of things are capable of satisfying him.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 1, Cancer, Paragraph 7, Clauses 1-2

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Junior wasn't sure how to find a wife. There were mail-order catalogues. The pictures were nice. The process seemed suspicious. He certainly wasn't going to rely on his mother. She was still pushing Davis. "She's such a lovely girl," Dorothea would say. "Why don't you marry her?"

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring one man's descent into debauchery

Eventually, somebody complained of a water leak. A radiator was found crushed up against a window. Patsy was attached to the other end. Hoisted onto terra firma, he wasn't sure whether he was still alive. Opening his eyes, he giggled at the dumbfounded emergency workers. He whispered, "What beautiful angels."

– from “A Cop Named Patsy,” a funny story featuring an honest cop

Nobody cared what Lorenzo did. When a cherry tree was chopped down in the Bishop's orchard, nobody suspected him. "Who would do such a thing?" asked the concertmaster. Ferrari shrugged. He had his own business next to the Honorable Carmina's litter. Every time she came to the Bishop's palace to hear a concert, Ferrari escorted her home.

"I would be your servant," he whispered.

"That's just squawk talk, honeypie. Listen: I've got a guy coming towards you with bright red swim trunks. Keep an eye on him for me, will ya?"

"Affirmative. Over."

"And have Sergeant Kline get me a towel."

"That's Sergeant Cline," said Sergeant Kline, snatching the radio from Juanita. "Why do you need a towel?" he asked.

Luka took a short cut. He turned abruptly onto the Route du Point du Jour à Bagatelle. He reached the cul-de-sac. Long green lawns glimmered through the trees. He veered onto the Route de la Longue Queue. He would shadow the Reine north. He could reach the Boulevard. Avenue Charles de Gaulle would be a stone's throw away.

There she was. She was on the right side of the road, waiting to cross. Luka slowed. He stopped in front of her. He looked into the back. Nike was still unconscious.

ALICE: Yes, please.

KOKOMO: I'll get you a cup.

ALICE: You're such a sweetie.

KOKOMO: Don't mention it.

ALICE: I mean it. You do so much around here. Nobody seems to notice.

KOKOMO: Are you alright?

ALICE: I wish I were.

KOKOMO: Stay still. You'll hurt yourself. Step away, please.

LESBIAN: I still don't know how you could have mistaken me for your wife. It seems pretty strange.

LUKE: Let's just say that sometimes I'm in a wee bit of a rush. Do you know what I mean?

LESBIAN: Regrettably, I think I do.

LUKE: Life isn't always like playing football. I'm like Kokomo: I burned the money.

LESBIAN: What do you mean?

LUKE: After her problems on American Samoa.

LESBIAN: She was on American Samoa?

LUKE: You didn't know that?

LESBIAN: No.

– ACT II, lines 565-573

FLETCHER: It's true.

ALICE: The poor girl was stabbed sixty-two times. Can you believe it?

LESBIAN: I'm upset the suspect is from New Zealand. That doesn't reflect well on me.

LUKE: We Aussies are supposed to be the criminals.

FLETCHER: Don't forget that Norfolk Island used to be a penal colony not just once but twice.

MS. JACKSON: Some still seem to think it is.

ALICE: There hasn't been a murder here in one hundred and fifty years. Did the last one take place when the prisons were still around?

MS. JACKSON: The last person to be murdered on Norfolk was a prisoner in the nineteenth century, shortly before the prisons were removed.

FLETCHER: Who needs prisons when you're oblivious to crime?

MS. JACKSON: It was before either the Bounty or the Pitcairner families arrived.

Usage of Still in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I saw Barack the other day. He looked like he was doing better. The last time I saw him his body was twitching so badly he couldn't walk. His body is still twitching but not as much. He can get around with a cane. His speech is still slurred.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that isn't factual and yet is true, since the details are fictional

Titan's reign as the premier scientific facility in the inner solar system had showered young Pfizer T. Microsoft with a mythic sense of destiny. His great-great-great-grandfather was part of the team that had pulled the errant moon away from the clutches of its gas giant back when man's mastery of gravity was still in its infancy. It didn't matter to Pfizer that his grandfather had been more or less a sanitation engineer. He had traveled across the branes on a trip to Andromeda. To survive one plunge in a tesseract was to be lucky. His grandfather survived three. He was nearly a thousand earth years old when he retired to Peoria. The meager savings he had invested prior to his first departure had with compound interest mushroomed to the fortune that had funded two of Pfizer's three graduate degrees. Pfizer owed the old man a post on Titan.

– from “Titan's Reign,” a science fiction story that can't escape its own gravity even at light speed

The hill in question had about a hundred boxes split along two streets both rising in diverging directions from the same point on Profile Road until curving back upon themselves and meeting at the top of the hill in the form of Facebook Terrace. It was formerly under the complete purview of Rural Rural Route 10 until Rural Rural Route 10 was disbanded upon the retirement of Old Man Dickinson and split between Rural Routes 2 and 4. Rural Rural Route 4 received the entire hill to much joy at the turn of the next pay period. Until winter came and the disrepair of Update Street combined with the freezing runoff on Download Street caused much grumbling and more than a few broken mailboxes. Still the money was good.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story that represents real life for some people, though the details are fictional

The wedding was postponed. Steve O got a chance to look deep into his heart. He explored his feelings. Adam helped Steve O realize that enjoying a finger up the bum had nothing to do with being gay. If Steve O had romantic feelings for Adam, as Adam might still have for Steve O, there were ways in which they could develop those feelings in a non-sexually threatening way.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that shouldn't cause a fuss, but what you make of it is up to you

Indiana came first with Olympia. She said Albert had to work. Mother was suspicious. "On Christmas Eve?" It was still early. When Albert arrived, he hardly spoke to his wife. I wonder if you noticed.
