Until, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to study the practicality of amplifying his unimpressive Fiction Corpus with a treatise on welfare reforms; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the idea of employing English as a worldwide language. I do reject the altogether average plan by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Reinforcing a person's know-how with a language isn't like pioneering a smoother toilet paper. A language - a living language - is not just a tool that you can teach yourself to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A living tongue can't be disentangled from the shared logic of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. A worthy teacher has to develop a technique for introducing it; the smartest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words based on a specific corpus, a set of writing of varying size and consistency. They might include everything from a book about literature to some real fantasy science fiction. I suffered many a sleepless night creating my "extraordinary" Fiction Corpus to form a special sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have inspected them, reshaping them - not just to teach a tongue but to promote the human spirit, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Until

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word until in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word until, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word until is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Until in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Your grandfather's actions were famous and had great consequence. Having set a milestone in the history of tort law, they marked a new era in political and legal history. Two years after Jesus's mother died, the government of France took the unprecedented step of admitting its own fault, not only for the terrible lives and health of its citizens, but also for the general atmospheric situation - many thought the move was a purely financial and political one, as the French government was in danger of losing its power and legitimacy, but that was beside the point: it was still a clear moral victory. That same year, many governments won lawsuits against a myriad of industrial giants. For the criminal and tortious acts of polluting the public weal so indiscriminately and mercilessly, those giants were forced to pay, first, sums of over three billion dollars, and then, eleven point three billion dollars, until finally, they were paying settlements of three hundred and sixty-eight point five billion dollars. Hallelujah! said the people. God bless the Law!

Verse 64 from the chapter called Adolescence

In those days, there was a brief craze for communal flagellation. Flagellant processions were commonplace in the town of Treblinka for about five weeks. They began after a certain Jesuit from Italy came to speak at St. Hedwig's. During a strange and mostly tedious homily, which was barely being translated by the pastor, this Jesuit stripped himself naked (down to the waist), threw himself onto the tomb of Henry II (the Bearded), grabbed onto his scourge (which came out from nowhere) and started beating himself. There was silence but for the sounds of his whip. Blood was everywhere. "It was incredible," said the fortunate ones who saw it. "He kept doing it: right through the Eucharist. He didn't stop until every last person was done." After the Mass, people who prostrated themselves in front of the altar were beaten by the Jesuit. They were instructed in the mystic ways of flagellation. Everyone present was welcomed. There was a long, organizational meeting held in the presbytery, and the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament was formed.

Verse 430 from the chapter called Adolescence

"No," I said. "When we laugh and keep going."

We danced. We danced until we smelled.

"I smell," she said.

"What?"

"I smell."

Verses 489-493 from the chapter called Bohemia

When your father's uncle began trying to hang himself, it was generally understood that 'it' was nearing an end. His wife wouldn't let him do it. She would yell and yell and yell until he came down. She was a foolish wife. Any real, self-respecting slutty bitch-whore would've left him a long time ago. She was really in love: she loved him! What a strange and beautiful woman she was.

Verse 368 from the chapter called Adolescence

They laughed heartily. Jesus charged with his imaginary spear and pretended he was being overwhelmed by rhinoceri. Then he pretended that one of their horns had impaled his perineum. Zoe laughed, but she didn't partake in the foolery and kept walking calmly until she saw the ridges.

Usage of Until in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I began to wonder whether Luka might not be as timid, or shall we say, as easily persuaded, as the man who shares both his name and his friendship to Nike - that is to say, his potential counterpart in America. It would prove quite a success for Nike, because that creature which we call Luke, after befriending, or shall we say, becoming side-kick to Nike, became sort of a lackey for everyone - until of course, the situation became so egregious that even Nike felt sorry for him, and he began forcing himself to treat Luke with a little more respect - but, unlike Luke, Luka is not an insecure young man: he is a man approaching middle age, with technical expertise in computers and programming, a skill that continues to give him steady employment (for the time being, he says) but which up till now has granted him a sizeable income, and - thanks to France - plenty of vacation, which means that Luka has also pursued his favorite hobby quite seriously, leading to his present claim of status as gentleman-farmer, which Nike can only jokingly dispute, since his current partner has indeed accumulated plenty of produce and livestock, gradually investing less of his time in programming and more of his money into establishing a lively homestead outside of Paris - a very attractive location, especially for a household whose most recent member is a cousin of Nike's, a man who - as we know - is not only in Paris with nothing to do, but who appreciates the sweetly buzzing sound of success, and there is no doubt that Luka will soon outgrow his current small-holdings, especially if both Nike and his cousin have something to do with it.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 3, Comparing Men, Paragraph 7

And he would not be comfortable again until that happiness left him. Is that not sad? I hope to heaven it be not true, and that I be merely grossly mistaking myself, or else that Nike will change in time to accept his happiness when it comes - because, for some reason, everything I see about Nike points to his future failure.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 1, Cancer, Paragraph 7, Clauses 5-7

NIKE: Yeah, it's like heaven wrapped up in hell. They don't have to work alright, but not because they don't want to: they can't even feed themselves: they don't know how. The women have to feed them until the queen's ready to have kids. It's like the Amazons, for godsake. These chicks have careers, man: they start by takin' out the trash: they're on clean-up duty, disinfecting the honeycomb. After that, they become nurses - right? first for the older kids, then they're graduated to the younger ones. And then what? They become builders for a while, and then, finally, they get to fly outside for the first time. But then? they go straight to guard duty - 'cause only when you're at the top of the hive can you go out and hunt for nectar. Can you imagine what that's like? Matriarchy?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 13, Discussing the Birds and the Bees, Paragraph 11

She was so calm - so divinely peaceful - just like she was when everything started. I remember how panicked I was - how worried, when Albert wouldn't wake. He was sleeping on that sofa bed for so long, I couldn't remember when I last saw him. I returned home one afternoon with some fresh inspiration, and, after looking into Albert's room and seeing him under his blanket, I naturally assumed that he was sleeping. I didn't start to worry until I was preparing my nightly collation. I thought: maybe I should wake him up, believing that he must be very hungry. But then I thought: he must know when to wake and when to sleep - after all, he was the one who was tired. So I let him rest till morning. Then, when he didn't show up for breakfast, despite the noise and the smells, I knew there was a problem. So I went to his room and tried to wake him: to no avail.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 7, Human Frailty, Paragraph 2

I remember him standing in front of that canvas forever, trying to count the number of games, until I left out of frustration and came back with an information card. He looked amused with himself, and claimed he had counted sixty without doubling; I told him it was eighty-four, and had to convince him not to look for the rest. Even as we stood in front of Mantegna's St. Sebastian, he mentioned how funny it was that Bruegel would show grown men playing a children's game like leapfrog. He said adults shouldn't act like children, but that they should think like them.

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: Good. My mother's been trying to stop her. I don't blame her for that. I feel sorry for the poor girl. Her story is a sad one. Kokomo's grandmother was raped by the Japanese while they were occupying the island of Upolu in Western Samoa. That's where Kokomo was born. Her mother was the product of that horrendous crime. Though they were the victims, both mother and child were ostracized by their tribe. Even after her mother had grown up, only the Catholic priest would take pity on them. Kokomo was the product of that pity. Eventually, she went to American Samoa to work as a prostitute for the tuna canners. One day, she came home with fifty thousand dollars and a baby. It turned out her pimp had threatened to kill her if she didn't have an abortion. Unfortunately, Kokomo made the ill-advised decision, once the baby came, to run away with the pimp's money. He ended up tracking her down. When he showed up at the mother's hut, Kokomo, in a state of pure shock, burned the money. The guy flipped out, killed her mother, slit the baby's throat, burned down the hut and forced her onto his boat. On their way to Pago Pago, they were hijacked by a bunch of pirates from Fiji. They killed the pimp and then realized he didn't have anything worthwhile except for the girl. While they stood around, trying to decide what to do, Kokomo offered them the greatest sex they would ever have in their entire lives: on the condition that they release her. They figured: why not? They could do whatever they wanted with her no matter what happened. Kokomo blew their minds. They were so satisfied, they stuck to the deal. They let her go in Fiji, where they begged her to stay and work as a prostitute. Kokomo agreed to do it, but only until she made up the fifty thousand dollars that she burned: the money that killed her mother and her newborn baby.

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

As Mark made his way down to his final stop he noticed the professor standing behind the tripod leaning into the viewfinder. He was so preoccupied with the sight of the bent-over old man he neglected to slow down and crane his head around the hedgerow. Luckily there was nobody there. The cord that connected Bill's hand brake to the actual brake had snapped. He had been dragging it for about the entire route until a customer on Download Street finally stopped him and asked, "What's that noise?" Bill decided it was time to take a break and check it out. He didn't want customers thinking postmen didn't care about their trucks. The customer saw the broken cord. He offered to bring some twine so Bill could tie the loose end to the chassis. Bill said he didn't want to be a bother. The customer insisted. Bill was forced to wait ten minutes until the customer came back and said, "Sorry it took so long. Here's the twine." Bill tied the cord to the chassis and went on his way. Never realizing the broken hand brake had probably saved his life.

Are you a eunuch?

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
