Whenever, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is thinking over the viability of complementing his humongous Fiction Corpus with a history of the art festival; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the possibility of administering English as humanity's second language. I don't regard highly the fatiguing blueprint with which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Polishing one's handiness with a language isn't like developing a more valuable coin. A language - a spoken language - is not merely a tool that you can teach yourself to wield with greater amounts of precision. A common language can't be disassociated from the competing values of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A worthy teacher must have a blueprint for introducing it; the discerning student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying scope and consistency. Such a corpus may include anything from a book about literature to some real fiction novels. I lost many a night laboring on my "towering" Fiction Corpus to form a precise class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have strung together a million words and I have cut them down, reformulating them - not simply to teach the English language but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to prod that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 5 Answers the Question, "When?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. Thursday, or Greenery Day respresents the "When"

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Whenever

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word whenever in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word whenever, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word whenever is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Whenever in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

We offered ourselves to the local governments in Treblinka. Both the town government and the local commune were no less corrupt than anything else, but, thankfully, their operations were limited. Fire control was the worst thing we had to do. Coal investigation was almost as bad. The countryside was restive; so was the town. At night, in the streets of Treblinka, you could almost choke on the fumes. Whenever the wind blew down, clouds of sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide reached around corners and into alleyways. It was almost impossible to find the source. There wasn't enough electricity for streetlamps. They were all dark. In those days, the nights were very dark. People didn't like to leave their homes very often. Despite the rebelliousness, in those days, it seemed like everyone - except for the Capitalists - was in retreat.

Verse 234 from the chapter called Security

"Your father owns more than one spaceport; he can launch a spy satellite whenever he wants to."

"That's true."

Verses 966-967 from the chapter called Bohemia

I well remember how your father's mother struggled. Once in a while, her attacks were long and devastating, terrifying everybody else gathered around. Her skin would turn blue: she would look like a heavenly creature in hell, surrounded by devils, gasping for God's great air as if we lost mortals were choking her with our own breaths, bellowing out carbon oxides, unclean combinations of two otherwise beneficial elements: diamond air, which would form to cut through our hearts whenever we started feverishly running around to help her. We were dragons breathing smoke, as far as she was concerned. Give me air - she must have thought - not smoke! We would crowd around her unnecessarily; your father would look into her eyes, caress her face - but she wouldn't stop gasping. More than one innocent bystander must have jumped, as I often did, at the prospect of gallantly locking lips to give her air, only to sit back in self-conscious superfluity, cringing at the thought of one's potential motive.

She was so blue!

Verses 43-44 from the chapter called Adolescence

A man is not a rabbit, as my grandfather used to say (whenever he received farmer's cheese on his plate); it's hard to imagine, whatever level of intelligence the first hunter possessed, that, after having dodged left and right in a vain attempt at chase, he didn't decide just to sit there and wait for his prey to come wandering within range. Perhaps having climbed into a nearby kola tree, the first hunter waited patiently while chewing its dry fruit, satisfying his hunger pangs until some succulent piece of game, unaware of its new predator hiding in the branches, came wandering underneath and WOOSH! went the rock, or WHIZ! went the wooden spear, aided by gravity to come violently crashing (or piercing, as the case may have been) right between the shoulders.

Verse 2 from the chapter called Arms

"What!"

"No, listen to me: this way, if we don't like it, we don't have to do it again."

"Who's going to keep track?"

"Thirty-three minutes isn't long enough."

"How long do we have to do it?"

"However long it takes."

"Everyday? For thirty-three and a half days?"

"Don't forget: we have to do it twice a day."

"Twice a day! For thirty-three and a half days?"

"We don't have to do it twice a day if we don't want to," said one of our leaders. "We can do it whenever we want."

"We should have a schedule."

"No: that's too complicated."

"We should have a logbook."

"Logbook? What do you mean?"

Verses 453-466 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of Whenever in Sex for Children

INDIE: Yes. I'm sorry.

JO: Why is it broken?

INDIE: I don't know.

JO: You don't know? Are you sure it's broken?

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 32, Femme Fatale, Paragraphs 13-21

Such wonder I experience whenever I reflect on the origins of my relationship with Macy. It was so long ago, we were both so young then but I remember it vividly, and completely, unlike a great many other experiences that have distilled themselves into particular moments of feeling or have now decomposed into dark and cloudy snapshots of action. No, this memory is living. It accompanies me - you will enjoy this - whenever I pass a church drunk, and sometimes during general intercessions too.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 3, Ambushing a Man, Paragraph 4

When I was a young boy, I denied myself that culture. I think I came out pretty well for it. So don't tell me you were intimidated by everyone else's machismo: that you were pressured into smiling and pretending and going to the prom and hoping you would get laid. Don't tell me how much you had to suffer whenever you tried to get close and all the pretty boys turned away: it was only your own weakness.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 5, Surrendering the Debate, Paragraph 2, Clauses 2-6

Perhaps I was to blame; my memory does give me the impression that, after a certain point, it was I who habitually engaged Macy with my own dissertation. But that is trivial; if he had so desired he could have changed the course of conversation whenever he wanted. I do recall one time when I seemed to be boring him; I remember asking if I were boring but I don't remember what he said.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 5, Falling in Love, Paragraph 4, Clauses 1-3

Whenever I saw her, whenever she passed by me or I approached her, the feeling would come spurting from my loins. And I was deeply troubled, because I didn't know what it meant. It was around her that I first became conscious of the feeling. And because she was the first object of its power, I was very confused as to its nature. My best explanation was, and remains to this day, that somehow my organism could sense the body of its origins, that there was some primordial attraction taking place, or else that my visual recognition of my mother was prompting my body to send out a message, to call to her in greeting perhaps. Sometimes I thought my body was trying to return to its home, trying to pull me by my loins and jump back into the womb. That was the inspiration for some very strange imagining.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 5

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

MS. JACKSON: Listen.

LESBIAN: Your mother and I can do whatever the hell we please.

FLETCHER: Whenever the kids aren't looking.

MS. JACKSON: Fletch!

LESBIAN: Your mother is a grown woman.

FLETCHER: Why doesn't she act like it?

MS. JACKSON: That's enough.

– ACT I, lines 973-982

LUKE: I don't want to be the one spillin' secrets, but you might as well know. It all started when her grandmother was raped by the Japanese on Western Samoa.

LESBIAN: During the war?

LUKE: Whenever it was that they occupied the island.

LESBIAN: The Japanese never occupied Western Samoa. They did have plans to invade, but Midway changed all that. They tried to capture Port Moresby instead. Unfortunately for them, what they thought was a motor track turned out to be a mule trail, one which no Australian had dared traverse in over twenty years. They say the Japanese soldiers eventually turned to cannibalism. I thought about doing the hike myself. Five days is a bit much. The dry season was ending. I decided against it.

LUKE: Are you saying the Japanese never invaded Western Samoa?

LESBIAN: I was on Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. That was as far as they got. You must be confused.

LUKE: I'm not confused; I'm sheepish. It wouldn't be the first time.

LESBIAN: The music box is missing. It looks as though another heirloom's been stolen.

LUKE: I'm not the one who took it: that's for sure. See you at the airport, mate.

Usage of Whenever in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

On the fifth day I worked on my translation. Whenever I noticed something odd like a common idiom or a strange use of a word I considered it out loud. I started teaching grammar to an invisible class. My commentary attracted the interest of two village women. I caught them trying to look through the window. I invited them inside but they ran off. It occurred to me that there were many things in this world that might be of interest to an imaginary class.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes the mess we're in as a society, though hopefully you're one of those helping to clean it up

My father came from a Ukrainian family but he was born in the United States. He spoke English. Unlike my mother. The most she ever managed was an awkward "Would you like anything to eat?" whenever I had a friend over. Which wasn't very often.

– from “The Most Idiotic Actress,” a fictional story that has only a few facts mixed up as far as the author knows

Some people think I'm a smarty-pants. It's not true. I'm the biggest idiot of all. I immigrated to America. I came willingly. I don't regret it. As bad as things are in this country they're even worse where I was born. A lot of Americans don't realize that. Whenever I hear snobs complaining about how things are I tell them to relax. Take a trip to Woodstock. By the time you get home you'll be grateful.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
