Above, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is contemplating the thought of supplementing his noble Fiction Corpus with a fable about art for children; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the potency of legislating English as the international community's second language. I do challenge the unsensational way in which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Reenforcing a person's adroitness with a language isn't like developing a more informative newspaper. A language - a common language - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to employ with a greater amount of precision. A living language cannot be disconnected from the philosophical currents of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A worthy educator must have a blueprint for introducing it; the wisest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written language of various scope and consistency. They may include everything from a book about literature to an entire set of british literature books. I created my "weighty" Fiction Corpus to form a different type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have constructed a million words and I have deconstructed them, reformulating them - not simply to teach the English tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

As an American, I was full of optimism and confidence bordering on recklessness. I was ready to run the wheels off the car I had just bought and eventually I would. As a European, she was cautious and mistrustful. She needed to make sure the air conditioner worked. Which it did. If you knew how to turn the broken knob in just the right way.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Above

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word above in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word above, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word above is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Above in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Jesus's fame was strong and double-edged. He had joined the ranks of infamous sons, like the former British prime minister's son, who was accused of planning a rebellion and a hostile take-over in a small and out-of-the-way space station, or the son of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, who was accused of skimming billions and billions of dollars from an oil-for-food program that was in effect for years until Sadatmo of Daghbod was captured by the Americans. The difference was that Jesus had come out on the good side, whatever the hell that was. Jesus had no idea who his allies were, but, thanks to the fact that his enemies had bad reputations, his side, indeed, seemed to be the better one. Nevertheless, he was not immune to criticism. People from all sides were afraid of his newly found power. It was easy to say that Jesus had come from a privileged background, though he had and had not; it was easy to say that Jesus wasn't really on the side of the regular man, though Jesus never actually said that he was; it was easy to say that Jesus was above the law, even though everyone knew that he wasn't the only one.

After all, there were more than two sides.

Verses 204-205 from the chapter called Security

Blaming America was difficult. For the simple-minded, it was easy, but most people were conflicted. America was a beautiful country; it had suffered much, but who hadn't? Besides, Americans were in space, in stations orbiting around the Earth; America was on the moon, racing China for the best pieces of real estate. Even though half their country was gone, they were still on top! They were in orbit around the Earth! American soil filled the stratosphere, casting its shadow across the globe: and they were above it! They couldn't care less. To them, the damage was done. Yellowstone exploded - thank you very much, now go and help yourself.

Verse 82 from the chapter called Childhood

Clouds brought fire to man. That cold breath of wet air that separates the positive away from the negative by lifting the positive up into the higher regions and leaving the rest alone, clumped together and shivering, decided to leave at the very bottom of the clouds a small blanketlike layer of the positive, which, for a while, protected Earth from the negative's wrath, but which was quickly devoured by that great mass and, giving way, permitted a fiery discharge of negative currents to come crashing down toward the Earth, summoning up, by methods I fail to understand, an opposing discharge from the point that otherwise would have been struck, which, as I've been told, met the fiery discharge approximately fifty meters above the ground and caused a great luminosity to flash and propagate itself back toward the clouds, reaching speeds near one-tenth the speed of light and temperatures around thirty-thousand Kelvin which heated the air and sent a massive shock wave expanding at supersonic speeds in either direction for about a meter before decaying into a sound wave, a massive clap, that rang in the ears of the first upright man to hear it, who saw the Light, who knew it to be God, or at least someone or something who was very angry - at him, perhaps, which made his whole hairy body stand on end and which scared the living bejesus out of him.

Verse 1 from the chapter called Security

In those days, America was everywhere: in your eyes, in your ears, your nose, your mouth, your hair. You could smell it, taste it, brush it away with your hands - but it kept coming back. It was under your fingernails, lodged permanently between your toes, your legs, your buttcrack. Everywhere you went, you felt it. Walking down the street, you felt it. Everywhere you went, you found it. Getting off the bus, you found it: there it was! right there: in front of you: next to you and above you - always out of reach, like a dirty cloud. If you went to the store, you found it. If you went shopping, you found it. The shelves were never empty. If you went to the woods, you found it. If you went to the hills, you found it: America! the beautiful! Amber waves of grain! Purple mountains' majesty! Majestic, purple skies! filled with mountains! The haze! Once-fruited plain! Dizzy, dizzy, dizzy! The fox-trot! The twist!

Verse 76 from the chapter called Childhood

In the morning, on the third day of the pilgrimage, there was mist. A ring of mist encircled us and prevented us from seeing farther than one kilometer in any given direction. The priests took advantage of this natural phenomenon to meditate on the presence of God, especially the way in which He accompanied Israel on her sojourn through the desert. Jesus meditated on his destiny, his true mother's identity, his oath to his father, and, above all, Zoe's role.

Usage of Above in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

For you, dear sister, I remain devoted, but concede I must, for these events are disrupting: these dreams of vice and violence are the product of many things, including circumstances beyond my control, of course, but, above all, I think I must blame this exhausted imagination of mine. I think writing has weakened me: this constant application of my mind, this researching of recent memory, living through things I already saw and did by imagining them - if only I could imagine them better than when I first saw them! But these things are no clearer now than how they once were. They are simply more tiring.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 1, Relations Between Siblings, Paragraph 3

ANDY: No: absolutely not. It's not important in the slightest.

MACY: I don't understand.

ANDY: You don't understand because you're wallowing in it. Your eyes are in the mud and I can see you underneath me.

MACY: Are you saying you're above your own sexuality?

ANDY: Now you're beginning to understand.

MACY: It's an easy thing to claim.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 4, Searching For Independence, Paragraphs 12-17

I remember it vividly, because Grandmother was very inspired; she began telling us more stories about maidens dreaming of marriage - like the rites of St. Catherine's Day, which was on the twenty-fifth of November and used to mark the beginning of Advent. Now in the olden days, the meats and sausages had to be hung right above the kitchen fire by the time St. Catherine's rolled around - otherwise they wouldn't be ready for winter - at which point, the family would say: "The girls have been hung in the chimney!" referring not only to the meats and sausages, but the many poor girls who would have to preserve themselves through the winter, since, according to our Grandmother, in the olden days, weddings were forbidden during Advent.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 20, The Role Of Religion, Paragraph 7

The doors of his fireplace were wide open; on his wrought-iron grid, hovering above a deep pile of ash, two burnt-out logs leaned against each other, one slightly larger than the other, seeming to impose its cold embrace on the weaker one, the one more black with charring, more exhausted by the heat of former flames. There was soot everywhere in front of the fireplace, creeping toward a pile of old newspapers. And there were more logs, fresh ones lying nearby in a haphazard pile. It was so cold in that room that I wanted to start a fire. But I didn't dare: the smell of Macy was still hanging in the air.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 9, Intoxication, Paragraph 2

Please: show mercy upon me, sister: for, when you met me, I would never have imagined myself in such garb, and I would not have held any treasure so high above me that I could have borne it. I would have balked, dear sister, like the most wretched of mules; like a brutish, flea-bitten thing, I have not understood myself, sister. I have been compelled. I have followed your beautiful echoing right into the most unsightly of places. I have hated myself. And now that I have found you here, sister, I am deathly afraid I shall never leave, even if the ground below me break, and a swarm of bees try to lift me away. So I beg you, sister, no matter what the greatness of your love be, and who the object of its glory, to bless my suffering with pity and charity, and to marry yourself to me, this once hopeless creature." Nike stopped, and he waited.

The best place for that was the tallest building in Japan, the Yokohama Landmark Tower. Rising more than three hundred yards above the ground, it dwarfed everything around it. Patsy, on the other hand, was drawn by a different feast: the confident stride of youth, emerging from the sea, hands pushing back wet strands, an elbow pointing up, pulling with it a tortuous line of shade across flesh, a motion of such immense gracefulness that, once reaching its climax, it just as soon hid the soft, pale underbelly of the arm that led down to a freshly matted pit of delicately trimmed hair, still peaking from beneath those drawn shoulders, pointing to a pair of bubbly breasts, which, ever so mournfully, turned away, presenting the elegant boxwood bouts of the back, dimpled above the ass, bending now at those generous hips before pushing off with the springiness of freshly leavened dough, and disappearing like satin gauze upon the waves. Now that, thought Patsy, was a girl in desperate need of police investigation.
